WRITING WITH MAJOR TOM
Musician and Professor Carlos Alomar wrote with David Bowie and other Legends
By Darren Paltrowitz Carlos Alomar has credentials that just about any professional musician would kill for. He contributed to nearly a dozen studio albums by David Bowie, co-writing Bowie catalog staples including “Fame,” “The Secret Life of Arabia,” “Never Let Me Down” and “Dancing with the Big Boys”. This led to recording and/or touring with Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and Iggy Pop. Prior to his Bowie tenure, Alomar backed childhood friend Luther Vandross (as part of the group Listen My Brother), played guitar with James Brown, was a session player at RCA recording studios, and played in the Apollo Theater’s house band. Things have not slowed down for Alomar who resides in North Bergen. Nearly a decade ago, he began working at Stevens Institute of Technology where he became Director of the Sound Synthesis Research Center for the
Performing Arts, and appointed a Distinguished Artist in Residence. Alomar has not stopped playing music, and in recent years his discography has included the global mega-hit “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, The Scissor Sisters’ “TA-DAH”, and Alicia Keys’ “The Element Of Freedom”.
RVO: When did you move to North Bergen? CA: This summer will mark my eleventh year in Jersey. I decided to move to North Bergen because I found that New York’s changing scene was not to my liking. I am part of the exodus from the Upper West Side. North Bergen is very conveniently-located and I was just delighted to find an area where people say “good morning” to you and take the time to look you in the eye. I find it refreshing. RVO: How did the opportunity to teach at Stevens Institute come about?
Recording Arts and Sciences. Since the young musicians had no “recording studio” experience, I knew I’d have to lecture them and give them all the techniques necessary for them to go into the studio and perform professionally. The former director, David Musial asked if I would consider giving some master classes at Stevens. I said sure. The first term I had three students, the next seven, and then 12. By my second year, I had over 20. At that point I had developed my course of study and was on my way to teaching full-time.
CA: Ten years ago, Stevens Institute of Technology had a record company called Castlepoint Records. This company was formed so that students could learn the ins and outs of the music industry
by owning their own company. I was brought in as a producer by Rob Harari who I’d recently met at a Grammy event, when I was president of the New York chapter of the National Academy of

last Saturday to attend Art House Productions’ Snow Ball in Jersey City. Held in the non-profit’s black box theater and art gallery on Magnolia Street in Journal Square, the evening gala was the
organization’s 10th annual fundraiser for its performing and visual arts programs. The sell-out crowd of artists and supporters didn’t disappoint as they danced, schmoozed and celebrated the arts group’s artistic contribution to the Jersey City community. . To open the evening, singer Giselle, who received help from Art House to create her new single and music video, sang tunes from her repertoire with guitarist Adam Tilzer before Executive Director Christine Goodman took to the stage to address the crowd. “Thank you all for coming,” Goodman, who wore a blue wig highlighted with sparkling lights and a long flowing black dress, told the crowd. “We believe in the arts in Jersey City. We were founded to connect the community through art,
and as you know, a nonprofit is 24/7 every single day of the year. There is so much talent in Jersey City and I would personally like to say Viva the Arts.” Art House Productions has been a leader in Jersey City’s art scene and supports artists by helping them launch new works, and it encourages artists in all mediums, like playwrights presenting new plays; visual artists exhibiting new works, musicians and singers in concert, and arts classes for students of all ages. Art House also produces the citywide arts festival JC Fridays. A highlight of the Snow Ball every year is the Best Dressed parade of artists and supporters vying for the Best Dressed trophy. Cont’d from Cover They are members of Puppetworks’ marionette theater troupe, a non-profit company of wooden actors – in the good sense – that have been performing for children and adults since 1938 when they were a WPA Project presenting PINOCCHIO with the legendary Orson Welles. Headquartered in Brooklyn, Puppetworks has taken up residence at the Jersey City Theater Company with its very own puppet theater at Merseles Studios on Newark Ave. Opening Sun, Feb. 7 pm is Puppetworks’ fourth show at the Jersey City Theater Center, BEAUTY & THE BEAST presented through May 29 every Sunday at 1 pm. Puppetworks’
marionette troupe has been at JCTC since 2013 and performed CINDERELLA, PINOCCHIO and THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES/THE SNOW QUEEN.
(Beauty & The Beast star in Puppetworks production at JCTC.) Behind the scenes, Chief Puppeteer and Executive Director Michael Leach has been pulling the strings with Puppetworks for 26 years and is in charge of just about everything it takes to put on the show.
“Beauty & the Beast is one of our most popular shows,” Leach says. “Children and families love the spectacle they see on the stage, but they also really connect to this story and relate to its themes. We get great feedback for this show and Puppetworks is thrilled to bring our version to our growing audiences in New Jersey.” From the landmark 1946 French Film by Jean Cocteau to the Disney animated film and long-running Broadway musical, BEAUTY & THE BEAST continues to entertain kids. It’s the story of Beauty, who saves her father’s life by agreeing to live with the Beast, who is Cont’d on page 5

RVO: What do you like most about Hoboken? CA: Not only does it remind me of “The Village” in New York City, it reminds me of the many college towns I visited during my state-side travels with Bowie.
RVO: Did you ever record at Water Music? CA: Yes. I visited the studio during some of our students’ recording sessions, but most of my New Jersey recording was done at HarariVille studios in Weehawken.

RVO: When did you first get excited about technology in music? CA: When I was doing the trilogy albums with Brian Eno and David Bowie. They introduced me to electronic music. I got totally hooked on the techniques and equipment. When the Macintosh Plus computer came out, that was it. I got one, took it on the road and never looked back. In
Carlos Al0mar
1987, I recorded a synthesizer guitar album titled Dream Generator. I played most of the parts on the album and had the best fun ever. RVO: Is there any emerging technology related to music that you are especially excited about? CA: Oh yes, most definitely. I like intuitive technology such as the staff pad. It simply lets you write on a pad and musical notation immediately appears. Check out the Wavedrum, or the ROLI Seaboard, or even the Lippens piano from local New Jersey
inventors Andre and Luc Lippens – extraordinary! All of these emerging technologies and more can be found in the Sound Synthesis Research Center. I encourage exploration and experimentation. RVO: Are you tech-oriented outside of music? CA: Most definitely, I love it. I embraced technology a long time ago. RVO: These days, when someone asks you what do you for a living, what do you say? Guitarist? Professor? CA: It’s always guitarist. I’m very proud of my trajectory. I’ve had a performance released every year, for the last 40 years. I’ve been blessed. But titles such as Professor, Director, Trustee, Governor, President, etc. make good talking points. For more info on Carlos Alomar and his projects visit www.carlosalomar. com

But I’m not the cook. I’m the chief bottle-washer.” The menu is all Cuban with items like Seafood soup which is traditionally served on Fridays; Chicken, and a Black Bean soup, which, on a recent visit, one customer described as delicious with beans served in a light broth rather than a thick paste ($3-$9.99).
C
Another popular favorite at Babalu is the Cuban sandwich made with pork, ham and turkey. A new sandwich Vicente plans to add to the menu on Valentine’s Day comes from Fidel Castro’s daughter Elena: the Babalu Turkey Jam made with turkey, cream cheese and strawberry preserves on Cuban bread toasted on a Panini press. Sandwiches also include Babalu’s Bistec, Sandwich
de Polo, Sandwich de Polo Asado, Media Noche (marinated roast pork), Shredded Pork, and Fried Spanish Sausage with Lettuce and Tomato ($5.99$6.99). Appetizers include Chicken, Beef, or Cheese Empanadas ($2.50). Platters feature the Churrasco Babalu – Skirt Steak with house Chimichuri sauce; Bistec de Palomilla – Sirloin Steak seasoned with garlic and Mojo with carmelized onions; and Pechuga ala Pancha, grilled chicken breast marinated in garlic and lemon ($9.95-$19.95).
Desserts include Flan, Bread Pudding and Tres Leches ($4-$4.50). There are traditional Cuban
Shakes, too, like the Mango, Papaya and Guava ($4.50). Vicente relies on a team of cooks – Jose Ramos, Mileidy Plata and Wendy Alvarado. – to create the menu’s traditional Cuban dishes and daily specials. “I wanted to open a Cuban eatery because I wanted to add a little bit of our culture to the community,” Vicente says. “I’m going to get Ricky Ricardo’s conga drum, put the Cuban flag on it, and put it right there in the middle of the window.”

STARGAZINE Feb.2016 Aries- March 21 - April 19 Activity to the eleventh house finds you excited about a new project that has come your way. Your hopes and wishes have expanded. Those goals that you had just a year ago have changed and you feel that you can achieve anything you set out to do. Nothing can stop a happy confident Ram!
Leo -July 23 - August 22 There have been friends that recently you have put on your “pay no mind list.” It is time to reach out and reconnect with some of those that you have cut away. The reasons that you blocked their numbers have changed and one of them was for many years a treasured friend. Call and say
Taurus- April 20 - May 20
Virgo -August 23 - Sept. 22
Gemini- May 21 - June 20 You will have an opportunity to shine in the month of February. Activity to the first house allows others to see the wonderful potential that is yours, Gemini. Luck and even financial gain are yours for the taking. Be wise and pounce on these gifts from the Universe.
Libra-Sept. 23 - October 22 The month of February will be a journey to remember. There will be past mysteries unveiled and cleared up. It’s all about the history of a family situation that has haunted your subconscious for years. The mystery is solved and just like in one of those whodunit novels the person you least expected played more of a part. Close this chapter of your life and move forward with happiness. Problem
You have been mulling over a course of action, weighing the pros and cons. It comes down to should you continue with a relationship that has no real benefits for either party. Your thoughts go back to the good old days but they are gone. Move on. Love and understanding are fine but this high maintenance relationship is over. Go forward with confidence.
Cancer -June 21 - July 22 Things may be a little touchy with communications with family members during the month of February. This is not a time to clear the air or make your desires known. People just don’t get you and by confronting you will only make things worse. Relax and await your clear head to return. Even you are not sure what you want now. March brings direction and clarity.
This is a good time to make all your preventative doctors visits. Your health is fine but you must put effort and be pro active about these issues now. A great time to get that good bill of health so that you can focus on the important issues that will arise, like fun, social times and family events. Enjoy!
Scorpio - October 23 - Nov. 21 Work and employment issues are in the forefront of this month. If you are happily retired it is advised that you take a look at your finances and redo some important paperwork. New insurance policies or investments are highlighted. It’s just a good time to set up your goals and place you in the right direction. Go for the gold!
Sagittarius -Nov. 22 - Dec. 21 Planning for a vacation then now is the right time to look forward to the relaxing travel that is in your future. You love the excitement of exciting and mysterious places even at times enjoying a walk in your local park. It’s all about planning in order to make this vacation time a blast. You will enjoy the best of your life this year! Capricorn -Dec. 22 - Jan. 19 All work and some play makes the Capricorn native happy. You are on a role with responsibilities and the great news is that you are fine! Someone will want to go in business with you and the astral advice suggests that you double and triple check all contracts. They must favor the Goat as you will be doing more than your fair share in any business deal. Aquarius -Jan. 20 - Feb. 18 Friends may be overbearing at this time. They have problems and concerns and usually you are there to help. Now however their stories are boring and annoying. Take a break from counseling friends that don’t listen anyway. Do things for yourself now. This is time for Aquarius to enjoy life. Pisces -Feb. 19 - March 20 Are you feeling helpless and like no one appreciates your good nature? Join the human race! Life is not out to hurt the Pisces native. It is just our job to overcome obstacles with character and move forward. So go into the future with optimism and faith. You will be fine and always, always, know your worth!
