FORMLESS THREADS/STRATIFIED DIMENSIONS Paintings by Tim Daly and Roy Kinzer, and a site-specific installation by KC Tidemand Falcon Power West presents FORMLESS THREADS/ STRATIFIED DIMENSIONS, a curated exhibition documenting the uneasy balance between chaos and order. Complex growth is entwined with precarious futures and timeless dimensions in paintings by Tim Daly and Roy Kinzer, and a sitespecific installation by KC Tidemand. The exhibition presents a study of the nature of urban rhythms, complexities, architectural structure and unreal dimensions. The result is art that resonates with personal meaning and historic perspective. Curated by Roy Kinzer, FORMLESS THREADS / STRATIFIED DIMENSIONS offers an opportunity to view each artist’s unique insight and practice.

Hall curated the show which features sculptures by Jessi Li, Zachary Pritchard, Sam Pullin, and Laura Quattrocchi; video by Sylvestre Gobart, Stephane Garin, and Shua Group; and a performace installation called “Tap” by Andrew Emmet. The show runs through July 9.

“I intentionally chose works by artists who are currently, or have recently worked in the service industry,” Hall says as gallery visitors stream through the door. “These artists were able to engage with the subject of the show on both the subjective/emotional level as workers with specialized knowledge of the field, and on the objective/ intellectual level as actors in society.”

Hall also has a piece in the show, “Your Smile is your Only Asset” a tall wooden box adorned in pantyhose where visitors step inside, put on headphones and listen to a recording of a woman’s voice leaving a phone message about a work schedule. Hall’s piece reflects the conflicts she had working three years as a flight attendant for a major airline, she says. Women flight attendants are required to wear pantyhose as part of their uniforms and yet, pantyhose are flammable. In an emergency evacuation, the first thing women flight attendances are instructed to do is to remove their pantyhose. So, it seems the airlines puts flight attendants at risk for the sake of what they determine looks good, Hall says. “Part of my choice to Cont’d on page 4

13 Artists to exhibit at Hendrickson’s Corner 2-Day Show brings Boho Artscene Uptown By Sally Deering On the weekend of July 16 & 17, Hendrickson’s Corner on 31st & Broadway will be serving its usual menu on its main floor while upstairs it will host a feast for the eyes when the “We the People” Art Show gets underway. For two days, 13 artists will exhibit paintings, photography, jewelry and other crafts in the collaborative art show curated by artist and Bayonne resident Kevin Delaney whose Bar Napkin Art was recently trademarked by the U.S. Patent Office.. “The title of the show, We the People, is not anything political,” Delaney says. “It’s just an art show for the regular everyday person who gets forgotten about. The single mother trying to raise her kids, the artist trying to get by, just us, regular everyday people trying to survive for the day.”

“United States of Comics” By Dave Ryan Artists showing their work that weekend include Delaney, Ryan, and Patty Mulligan, Billy Zbylut, LatinSilver, KristieAnn Fitzpatrick, Ann Tedeschi, Erin Kachmar, Moscato, Joanne Fedor, Jeff Ware (Klone Killa) and Christine Crowley.

“For the Hendrickson’s show, I’m mixing it up,” Delaney says. “From artists that do pen and ink, to those who do oils, and photography. We’ll have handmade jewelry, too, and an artist from Brooklyn who custom paints sneakers. . It’s a good network of artists. Dave Ryan, for a living he illustrates comics, I’ll have his stuff in the show. It’s a nice mix, so when the public comes, they’ll see a lot of different stuff. It’s a professional show, but laid back and fun, not any stuffed shirt gallery.” Delaney’s Bar Napkin Art will also be on exhibit along with his canvases. “I was always an artist,” Delaney says. “I did graffiti, calligraphy. In college, I just stopped. Then in November of ‘99, I just started doing it. I thought it was so much fun. People were hanging them up, bringing them up. I just kept doing them. I got a registered trademark from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. It’s like Nike and Apple, its registered. Bar Napkin Art. It’s my brand, my logo.” Several photographers will be exhibiting in “We

the People” including Patty Mulligan, whose work includes Jersey City statues that seem to be Photoshopped, but they’re not, she says. One photo in particular, the statue of a soldier carrying another soldier, a photograph Mulligan took in downtown Jersey City, contains an image of the Statue of Liberty in the background – and the two statues almost seem to be touching.

“Pride” by Christine Crowley

“I just got a new camera that has some special effects,” Mulligan says, “and

I’ve been experimenting with different scenes in illustration and watercolor modes. I’ll be showing some of my new photos with my new camera.” All the artists are from Bayonne and Mulligan says the Boho art scene is thriving. A lot of new residents have joined the ‘artist circle’ an ever-expanding group of artists that live in Bayonne and new places like the Artist Den, run by owner Tiffany Patrice, are offering artists workshops and a place to create.

“There’s definitely a concentration of artists here,” Mulligan says. “I know some people have come from Jersey City. We are making progress. The Artists’ Den just opened recently. It’s not an art studio where you show work, but one where artists can do painting, sculpting, there are live models on Tuesday nights. Different things every night. We have several new artists that have come in this year, and there’s word of another art studio in the works that may be opening downtown. Everybody’s eager this year to be part of the Boho art scene.”

And what exactly is Boho? Well, the name is a play on “Soho” and was coined by a River View Observer writer in a story a couple years back. Since then, the downtown area from the Bayonne Museum on 9th Street to Boho Yoga on 4th Street is considered Boho. And on July16th & 17th Boho artists will bring a little downtown uptown to Hendrickson’s Corner for a two-day art extravaganza. “Kevin does this twice a year at Hendrickson’s,” Mulligan says, “and the owners are wonderful and give us the whole second floor. The lighting is great. Everything is on tables and easels. It’s really nice. And there’s a bar upstairs if somebody wants to have a drink. The owners are just fabulous.”

“Bungle in the Jungle” by Latinsilver

“You can come in see the art and have food downstairs,” Delaney says. “It’s free to get in. It’s for the city of Bayonne, and the artists of Bayonne to put them on the map. We’re giving people a night out and having fun. It’s a really good vibe and I’m glad I’m part of it.” If you go Sat, July 16, 4-10 pm; Sun, July 17, 1-4 pm We the People Art Show Hendrickson’s Corner (2nd Floor) 671 Broadway, BAY (201) 437-4955

BOUTIQUE ESPRESSO BISTRO Ground Connection opens at Harborside Financial in JC Takes Java to New Heights Hint: Check Out the High Tech Espresso Machine

arely open a week and already Ground Connection at Harborside Plaza 10 in Jersey City has people streaming through the doors for espressos, coffees, Danish, muffins, sandwiches and salads. Owner Scott Gillman, who has been in the restaurant business for several decades and owns Markers restaurant also located at Harborside Financial, sees his new coffee bistro as a place where people can get a freshly brewed cup of expresso made-to-order and friendly service from the minute they walk in to the moment they leave. “Our espresso is Toby’s Estate coffee in Brooklyn, one of the greatest coffee roasters in the country,’ Gillman says, amidst a flurry of customers lining up at the counter to get their daily javas. “Every cup gets hand-steamed milk and each espresso gets made with a different temperature according to its size.” Ground Connection is considered a modern day coffee shop offering small batch specialty coffee, full leaf and herbal teas, coldbrewed coffees and teas on tap. Sandwiches, sides, soups, pizzas and baked

Scott Gillman, owner of Ground Connection goods are prepared daily. Customer service is extremely important to Gilman who gives his staff extensive training in the ins and outs of running a good restaurant, in other words, the customer is the most important person in the place. “I try to teach the staff to put obsessive focus on the guest from entrance to exit and wow them in between,” “Part of the reason we Gillman says. call it Ground ConnecThe menu offers coffees, tion is the connection we eggs served many ways, want to make between our employees and our guests,” oatmeal, French toast, burgers from the grill, specialty Gillman says.

sandwiches, flat-bread pizzas, and salads. Fried Eggs with bacon, fontina, avocado and salsa verde are served all day; other egg sandwiches include the Smoked Salmon, NJ Classic (two fried eggs with American cheese and Taylor ham); Sausage, Egg & Cheese, and Avocado Egg & Cheese. ($5-$6.50) For sandwich choices, there’s the Coffee Shop Cheeseburger served with ‘smashed’ and seared certified Angus beef, American cheese and tomato; the Bacon; and the Mushroom & Onion burgers; the Grilled Chicken Avocado Club and Falafel Burger. ($7-$8.25) Specialty sandwiches feature the House Roasted Turkey, Pulled Pork Cuban, Spanish Pepper Chicken, Mozzarella, Spinach & Tomato, and Pretzel Crusted Zucchini. ($8-$9.50 ) Salads include the Chopped Italian with Grilled Chicken; Cobb Salad with Grilled Chicken, Kale Chicken Caesar, and the Falafel Bowl (crispy falafel balls, hummus, Israeli salad, red cabbage slaw, chopped iceberg, avocado, pickles, Tzatziki, and hot sauce). ($8.50-$9.75) Ground Connection has sides, too, like Crispy Skin on Fries; Side Salads and Soups. ($3-$5.25). The star of the show is

the coffee served in 12, 16 and 20-oz. cups. There’s Drip Coffee made with Toby’s Estate Brooklyn Blend; Café au Lait, Café Mocha, and Americano. There’s the Espresso Shot, and Brewed Teas, Chai Tea Latte, Green Tea Latte and Hot Chocolate. (Prices range from $2.25 for a 12 oz. drip coffee to $5 for a Green Tea Latte.) Espresso is served with Steamed Farm Fresh Milk in 3, 6, 8 and12 oz. cups with a choice of added syrups like Madagascar Vanilla, Belgian Chocolate, Dulce de Leche and Hazelnut – all of which are home-made. $3$4; syrups 50 cents each.

Alex Mastrando is the director of the coffee program at Ground Connection; he serves a customer a small Latte to order (they’re usually served in the largest cup). He steams Cont’d on page 17

BOUTIQUE ESPRESSO BISTRO Con’t from page 16 the milk, feeling the temperature of the milk pitcher as he does it; and then he taps the pitcher on the bottom a couple of times. “It’s to get out the air bubbles,” Mastrando says, making a heart design in the coffee. The coffees and espressos are considered “Third Wave”, which means they’re specialty coffees, “relationship” coffees, Gillman says, where boutique coffee shop owners like himself build relationships with their vendors, in this case Toby’s Estate in Brooklyn. Gillman’s a pretty busy restaurateur and oversees his restaurant Markers in Harborside Plaza, too, and there’s another Ground Connection in Hackensack. The reason he opened Ground Connection in Jersey City, he says, is to bring good coffee to the community; and give them an alternative to other boutique coffee shops.

“I want people to come and experience Ground Connection and make their own decision,” Gillman says. “We serve a great cup of coffee, and food that’s made from scratch. It’s fast, casual. We’re trying to do things really well. Even our oatmeal, we use farm fresh milk.” All coffee is a balance, Gillman says. “We may charge a little more, but we put more into it.” If you go Ground Connection Harborside Plaza 10 3 Second St, JC (201) 515-6240 www.GroundConnectionCoffee.com
