Mike Marino (born in JC) to Play Algonquin Arts Theatre ‘Down the Shore’ Embarking on Worldwide Comedy Tour with a Bid for President By Sally Deering
Mike Marino grew up
in the Marion section of Jersey City, squeezed between an older and younger brother, and when all three got together, life was hilarity and mayhem. A born funnyman, Marino decided to take his talents to a professional level. He studied acting in New York at one of the best acting schools around and he took jobs on soaps and commercials.

On Sat, June 25, Uncle Vinnie’s Comedy Club presents Marino at the Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manahawkin (down the shore, a little more than an hour from Hudson). Hoboken’s Mile Square Theatre Present Inaugural Production in New Theatre Hoboken’s Mile Square Theatre (Chris O’Connor, Founder & Artistic Director; Mark Cirnigliaro, Associate Artistic Director) will christen their new space with the Obie Award Winning play Circle Mirror Transformation written by Annie Baker and directed by Chris O’Connor. The play began performances on June 15 and celebrated its Gala Opening Night on June 16 and will run through July 2, 2016. The New York Times called Circle Mirror Transformation “absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny.” The play follows an unlikely group of strangers in a small Vermont town who take an acting class where their personal stories are revealed comically and
heartbreakingly through a series of misguided acting exercises. The cast includes: Deborah Hedwall (Broadway: The Heidi Chronicles, Equus; OBIE Winner: Sight Unseen), Jon Krupp (Film: Breaking the Chain, Stage: Wait Until Dark), Matthew Lawler (TV: “The Family,” “Boardwalk Empire”). Creative team includes: Matt Fick (Sets), Elaine Wong (Lights), Peter Fogel (Costumes), and Matt Bittner (Sound). The 2016 Mile Square Theatre Season is sponsored by Bijou Properties, The Burgiss Group, Clifton Savings Bank, Ironstate, Jet.com, Hufnagel Landscaping, and The Rockefeller Group. rtists, artisans and Hudson’s art-loving community spent last Sunday, June 12, under blue skies taking in the art works of contemporary artists at the Braddock Park Arts Festival. Named for boxer James J. Braddock, the park served as the backdrop for artists and artisans to show their work and share their process. Along with the artists and artisan vendors, visitors (adults and kids) participated in papermaking demonstrations, ceramic art, mono-printing and a 50-foot long community mural. Sponsored by Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, the Board of Chosen Freeholders, Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, and Division of Parks, the Braddock Park Art Festival grew out of the Guttenberg Arts Center, under the direction of Matt Barteluce, who started planning the June 12 event the day after last year’s ended. “This year we had more,
up for artisans like Nancy Guerrero of West New York, a student at Montclair State College who painted figures on miniature bottles.

Artists and Artisans Share their Process with Hudson Community under Sunny Skies sculptures more demos, more food trucks, and we doubled our attendance,” Barteluce said. “I think the demos gave everyone the
chance to become an artist for the day.” The festival took place near the boat house close to the lake and tents were set
In the booth next to Guerrero, Melissa Welz and Tim Shannon of North Bergen sold handmade soaps in the shapes of popsicles and miniature robots. Mosaics by Mollycat were on sale including a beautiful mosaic elephant; and Mati Moo hand-made bracelets by Stacey Talieres and Fiana Bezalko of Fort Lee also seemed to appeal to visitors. “We do everything by hand,” Talieres said. “We never compromise the integrity and quality. This is our first time at the Braddock Park Arts Festival and I’m delighted to be a part of it. We like to keep a local presence in our community.”

This year’s festival budget included stipends for all the artists including 12 sculptors -- Mazorra, Roberto Visani, Michael McKoewn, Jarrod Beck, Pansum Cheng, Christina Pumo, Chad Stayrook, Lauren Goldstein, David D’Ostilio, Eudomar Lopez, Morgan Lawson and Seth Bechtold – wbo were commissioned to create sculptures that were placed throughout the park like the giant rocket ship created by Michael McKoewn called “Braddock 1.” To create large prints from the woodprints, Barteluce rented a double drum roller from a construction company. Close to 3000 people attended including members of the LGBT community, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, members of the Municipal Council, and city and state representatives. Cont’d from cover the St. Charles Riverboat in Perth Amboy and in the fall, on Oct. 7, Marino comes full circle performing his brand of comedy at the Loew’s Theater in Jersey City, just a few blocks from the Marion Section where he and his brothers cracked each other up. Embarking on a worldwide comedy tour, Marino took a few minutes from his busy schedule to share with RVO how he went from Jersey City kid to top billing actor-comedian. RVO: You are a successful stand-up comic; were you a funny kid, too? MM: I grew up in Jersey City, the Marion Section. I have an older and younger brother. We were very tight and still are. When the three of us got together it would get very hilarious; it still does. My family moved to Scotch Plains. That’s where I was raised, suburbia. A great all-American town. RVO: Didn’t you just finish working on a TV pilot? MM: Yes. It’s called RECONSTRUCTING JERSEY, and it’s based on my life. We had the typical Italian basement where mom did all the cooking. Dad was in the construction business. We filmed the family, the town. We filmed in the local butcher shop, the local deli. It’s a wonderful pilot we put together. It’s like a Jersey version of MODERN FAMILY.
RVO: What is your style of humor? MM: My brand of humor is for every walk of life, from kids to adults to When this gets on the air, New Jersey will look like the best place in the world to live. It really should be on Netflix. RVO: How did you get into stand-up comedy; were you a funny kid? MM: I always wanted to be a theatrical actor; and I needed to get into the game. I was really hungry. So I crashed an audition for a United Airlines commercial. It was the only way to do it. I figured no one would notice. It was called “The Green Marine” about a marine coming home from boot camp. The commercial was a scene. The director asked me, “Are you a marine?” I said, “No, I’m an actor.” Three thousand marines auditioned for the part and the director gave it to me. My performance was so underplayed, I should have won an Oscar. I was nominated for a Clio Award. I lost to Chuck McCann who was in a Dr. Pepper commercial. My commercial ran for about 5 years. I bought my first house when I was 20. RVO: Did you also study acting at the time? MM: I studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts; I started at HB Studios in New York. RVO: How did you get cast on a soap? MM: I was auditioning for soap opera work. I landed a recurring role on AS THE WORLD TURNS. I was
the car mechanic. I was doing scenes with Marissa Tomei and Meg Ryan. When I got cast in a TV commercial in Italy, I didn’t have a contract as a regular, so (the soap writers) put my character in jail for a long time. RVO: You got into standup in Hollywood? MM: When I moved to California for the first time I wanted to see what it was like. I had blonde hair, blue eyes. Casting directors would say, what do you mean you’re from New Jersey and Italian? You look like you’re from California. So I ended up doing stand-up every night of the week. I did my first stand-up performance on THE MARTIN SHORT SHOW. It was fantastic. In Hollywood, I would perform at the Laugh Factory or The Comedy Store in Hollywood. I did an episode of FRASIER, PARTY OF FIVE. I had a regular gig on THE TONIGHT SHOW doing sketches with Jay Leno.
a charm and they love it, and there’s nothing you can do about it. RVO: Along with the world tour, do you have anything else in the works your fans can look forward to? MM: I have a movie coming out in September called CRITIC SIZED. I play a detective looking for a murderer. It’s a thriller. There’s no comedy. I play a straight part in every movie I’ve been in. I also did a movie where I play a priest. It’s called PIZZA WITH BULLETS, and it stars Vinnie Pastore and Talia Shire.

A highlight of the festival were the glazed sculptures of figures coming out of the earth which many festivalgoers photographed. “People do a normal walk through the park and they see the sculptures and scratch their heads,

THE BITCHY WAITER: Tales, Tips & Trials from a Life in Food Service (Paperback) by Darron Cardosa. “Millions of people have, at some point in their lives, waited tables. Some only did it in college, or got out by sheer determination, good luck . . . or suicide. Others took it on as permanent employment. And many remain haunted by nightmare scenarios where they are the sole server in a restaurant packed with complaining patrons. For all those disenchanted current and former food service employees, Darron Cardosa has your back. His career began at a Texas steakhouse in 1984, and since 2008 he’s vented his frustrations in the popular blog “The Bitchy Waiter.” A snarky mix of David Sedaris, Anthony Bourdain, Erma Bombeck, and Mo Rocca, Cardosa distills 30 years of food service into dark, funny tales about crazy customers, out-of-control egos, and what “really” goes on in that fancy restaurant that anyone who worked in the industry will recognize and relate to.”

“P.J. RYAN’S SQUARED” LIGHTS UP PATH PLAZA Restaurateur Mike Ryan opens Irish-American Pub and Sports Bar in Journal Square By Sally Deering
M
ike Ryan knows restaurants. In April, he opened his seventh: P. J. Ryan’s Squared, a new “go to” bistro in PATH Plaza in Journal Square. A big Irish Pub, P. J. Ryan’s Squared has a spacious dining area with nooks and crannies for conversations with friends, and a huge circular bar with 23 flat screen TVs for sports-lovers. Ryan describes his Journal Square pub as an Irish-American sports bar and music club where customers eat, drink and play darts and shuffleboard. On Friday and Saturday nights there’s live music; and on Thursday nights, Ryan’s brother plays Irish music in the Eamon Ryan Band. “I want to have a music bar,” Mike Ryan says on a recent sunny afternoon as customers sit outside in the bar’s beer garden. “I have music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and I want to start Karaoke on Wednesday nights. Entertainment brings people in and makes everybody want to be here. There’s nothing like P.J. Ryan’s here in Journal Square.”
