Hand guns are only good for one thing: taking someone out at close range. Self-defense is a euphemism. They are meticulously designed tools for mass carnage. I’ve tried to capture their terrible beauty.” Raven Gallery is the reflection of the people who run it, and Walker says: “Andrea and Javiera are beautiful people. I was flattered and thrilled they wanted to do the show with me, and work with me. They’re easy to work with, and they’re working artists as well. I think they are terrific.”
Artist Alan Walker’s “American Girl”. After two years of running their own gallery, McKenna says the two curators will be making some future changes to the space and will be expanding the gallery’s outreach. “We’ll be redesigning the gallery,” McKenna says, “making everything we have visible to our customers without overcrowding. We are also getting ready to sell online. We’re still in the process of setting that up and once it’s up, everyone will know. We are also
looking to do more community events, too. We’ll be at the Braddock Park Art Festival June 12th and the 4th St. Block Party at Mary Benson Park in Jersey City in July.” Both McKenna and Rodriguez keep busy schedules and that’s why Raven is only open on weekends. Still, the gallery has become a vital part of the Jersey City art scene and opening receptions like the one for the UP IN ARMS show are always well-attended by artists and friends. “Meeting new artists, bouncing ideas off each other, late night gallery set ups, and just being part of something that inspires others – that’s why we do

Folklore like Braddock Park’s UFO sighting can sometimes lead to other unique happenings and the alleged flying saucer incident has now become the kooky theme of the 2nd annual Braddock Park Art Festival to be held Sun,
Sponsored by Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, the Board of Chosen Freeholders, Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, and Division of Parks, the Braddock Park Art Festival grew out of the Guttenberg Arts Center, under the direction of Matt Barteluce, who started planning the June 12 event the day after last year’s ended. This marks Barteluce’s second year as festival planner and it seems to be bigger and extremely interactive. The Sunday event will feature hands-on art activities, artist demonstrations and exhibitions including 12 sculptures placed throughout the park and artists creating large murals as spectators watch. An artists’ market, festival
Braddock Park offering artists and artisans the chance to sell their unique products and art objects.
Matt Barteluce vendors, food trucks, live music will go on throughout the day. One highlight will be a community mural run over by a steamroller that will then be displayed at the end of the day. “The Braddock Park Arts Festival has expanded a lot since last year when we had a budget of $15,000 – the county put a lot of trust in us,” Barteluce says. “After seeing how last year’s event brought a lot of excitement to the community, the County allowed us to expand. We have a budget of $53,000 for artist stipends, tents, and that steam roller. That being said, we’ve been working with the County and Millennium Strategies to find sponsorships.” ART AT THE LAKE The Artist Market with 30-40 artists, galleries and community organizations will be to the left of the lake house at the center of

The path along the lake is where the steamroller will be set up. “We rented a double drum roller from a construction company,” Barteluce says. “It’s a cool way to do large-scale printing. We’ll have a 50-foot-by-3 foot long piece of plastic that the community will paint on. Then, at 2-or-3 o’clock, we’ll finish the painting, place paper over it, and the steamroller rolls over it a couple of times. Then we’ll have a 50 foot long community mural. It’s a unique process and fun to watch. And we’ll have last year’s Community Mural on display, too.” In Sponsor Alley, further to the right of the Artist Market, the festival’s Silver Sponsors will set up including artists from William Paterson University who will bring a 3-D printer. They’ll scan people and then print them out. Atlantic Paper also donated thousands of dollars of paper called Evolon. It’s a fiberglass paper that doesn’t tear. “The steamroller woodcuts and community mural are being done on the Evolon paper,” Barteluce says. Food Truck Row will be
Food Truck Row will be located on the Riverside Drive Circle located near the west side of the park, a block or so from Bergenline Avenue. So far, truck food vendors will be Good Food, Good Mood, a BBQ ribs truck; Chillin’ Out Ice Cream, My Four Suns, Korean Fusion, Cheezen, a grilled cheese truck,, and the Empanada Guy. Performances by local Hudson County Jazz ensembles will be near the handball courts.
“This year’s art festival offers twice as many activities as last year and will feature renowned artist installations and family activities that highlight the importance of art in our community,” Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, Jr, said in a statement. “We invite the public to join us for this unique, exciting cultural experience.” ART FOR EVERYONE Hands-on demos will include: paper-making with Combat Paper NJ, a monoprinting, dry point etching, and a do-it-yourself silkscreen table with Push Pull Printshop, body casting, Suminagashi (floating Ink), ceramics workshop with FPOAFM Nomadic Studios, the Montclair Art Truck, MLAB and journalmaking with Endless Editions. Artist Market exhibitors and vendors will include Cannonball Press, Raven Gallery & Boutique,
Carrier Pigeon, Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, the Killer Acid illustrator who does band posters, Drive By Press, Totemic 17 and many others. “We are pleased to support the second annual Braddock Park Arts Festival,” County Executive Tom DeGise says. “Clearly the community has embraced it and is making it a new spring tradition we can all enjoy taking in this year and in the future.”
This year’s budget includes stipends for all the artists. Twelve sculptors -- Mazorra, Roberto Visani, Michael McKoewn, Jarrod Beck, Pansum Cheng, Christina Pumo, Chad Stayrook, Lauren Goldstein, David D’Ostilio, Eudomar Lopez, Morgan Lawson and Seth Bechtold -- were commissioned at $1,000 each to create sculptures that will be placed throughout the park like the giant rocket ship created by Michael McKoewn called “Braddock 1”. “We want it to be site specific, 12 sculptures produced just for the park,” Barteluce says. “The park is just going to be a sculpture garden. And the artists will be paid a $1,000 each. Cont’d on page 7

Our main focus is to get our mission out there to
our community. We’re really just interested in making Guttenberg and North Bergen a hub for art. There are so many artists living in this area, everybody will be an artist on June 12, from little kids to parents. It’s really a part of our main mission, to be a cultural anchor for northern Hudson County.”

ART ON A PLATE
Pasta is Art to Elena Cartagena, Owner/Chef of Pasta Dal Cuore in JC Authentic Italian Pasta Made by Hand to Eat In and Take Home Calamaro Riieno e Gamberi – squid ink linguine, stuffed calamari, fresh tomatoes, and pinot grigio. ($15-$20) The signature dishes are the Spinach-Ricotta Ravioli with candied walnuts, lemon butter & sage, and Grana Padano, and the Squid Ink Linguini with stuffed calamari, Cartagena says.

P
asta Dal Cuore on Jersey Avenue in Jersey City isn’t just a nice looking restaurant – open, airy and with regional Italian pasta dishes – it’s a pasta factory where you can take home that delicious handmade pasta and make your own masterpiece. Owner & Chef Elena Cartagena with her handmade pastas
Their cuisine is faithful to what it has always been for 200 years. The dishes on my menu are like snapshots of what I learned.”
Flavors of Emilia-Romanga on crostini
With a Bachelor’s degree in film from NYU, owner and Chef Elena Cartagena decided to follow her dream and go to culinary school – in Italy. The Jersey City native attended the International Culinary Center in Manhattan’s Italian Experience Program which divides the student’s time between New York City and Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. “In Italy, we learned foods regionally,” Cartagena says. “Chefs would fly in from different regions and would teach us the typical dishes of that region. We tasted everything.
Fresh asparagus gratin, with Grana Padano
Cartagena’s menu features salads, appetizers, pasta dishes and other entrees. Salads and apps include Insalata Mista with radicchio, lettuce, goat cheese, olives, string beans, tomatoes, salted walnuts and a mustard dressing; Crochette di Patate – potato, lemon zest, basil & mozzarella croquettes served with spicy marinara; Gamberoni –
five pan-seared shrimp in lobster butter, shrimp broth, with garlic, lemon and fresh parsley; and Olive All’Ascolana, prosciutto & mortadella stuffed Castelvetrano olives, and bread, served with spicy marina. ($6-$12) Pasta dishes feature Short Rib Ravioli; SpinaciRicotta Ravioli al Limone; Pappardelle al Pesto; Linguine di Pomodoro al Tonno e Puttanesca – Romano linguine in a Neopolitan-style sauce of olives, capers, anchovies & fresh tomato, served with seared tuna; Tagliatelle Bolognese – classic beef, pork, veal and tomato ragu, sprinkled lightly with fennel pollen & Grana Padano; Maltagliati Pugliese – whimsically-cut thin pasta strips with Italian sweet and hot sausage, broccoli rabe, red pepper flakes and Pecorino Romano; and Linguine Neri con
Stuffed Clams
“Since there are so many Italian-American places, I wanted to do something different,” Cartagena says. “I’m one of those people I have to do something I’m passionate about. How will I have the stamina to go through hard times if I don’t have feelings for it?” Although it’s not soul food, Cartagena says her soul is in every dish she makes. And although she changed careers from film to food, Cartagena says everything has fallen into place with her new career and cooking is her art now. “Cooking is a way of experiencing art,” Cartagena says. “Every dish I make has a story. I saw culinary
school like an art studio. The same way you see art on the walls, food is like art on a plate. I respect my chefs. They are artists.” Pasta Dal Cuore opens for dinner throughout the week except Mondays, when it’s closed, and brunch is served weekends. It’s been more than a year since Cartagena opened Pasta Dal Cuore and it’s a tough schedule doing the pasta production at noon every day and then opening the doors as a restaurant. Cartagena, 35, says she doesn’t mind the long hours because she is fulfilling her dream. “I was always a dreamer,” she says. “I wouldn’t be here now if I wasn’t a dreamer.”
