HOMERS’ ODYSSEY 7TH Inning Stretch at Hoboken’s MST, May 12, 13 & 14 7 Ten Minute Plays about the Love of Baseball

By Sally Deering

Batter up!

Spring has sprung and Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken, once again, has baseball fever as the company prepares for its 13th annual 7th Inning Stretch evening of 10-minute plays. On Fri, Sat, & Sun, May 12, 13 and 14, MST will present seven 10-minute plays about baseball and this year, MST promises to hit some homers out of the park. MST Artistic Director Chris O’Connor directs. What’s new this year? Plenty, O’Connor says. “Here we are back doing ‘Stretch’ again,” O’Connor says. “A couple of years ago, I sat down with our company members and I was tired. We had been doing so much work and it’s a volunteer effort. No one gets paid. So I said, ‘maybe we shouldn’t do this anymore,’ and everyone started yelling at me. We gotta always do the Stretch, they said. It’s something our audience looks forward to.” This year’s line-up of seven playwrights includes Raquel Almazon, Robert Clyman, Megan Hart, Steven Haworth, Erin Mallon and Joe Sutton. “It’s a very interesting project,” O’Connor says. “These are all original productions. The writing is always good. We choose from some of the best writers out there and the acting

7th Inning Stretch 2008: Striking Out the Babe by Charlie Peters, starring Pablo Schreiber (center) is great. It’s a fun evening. Its like reading a short story collection. There may be one you are tickled by, and one you didn’t get, but wait ten minutes and you’re back on track.” O’Connor, who wrote The Mascots for 7th Inning Stretch 2010, says its not easy to write a ten-minute play. As Artistic Director, O’Connor commissions playwrights to write a play keeping three particulars in mind: it has to be 10 pages, with 5 characters or less, and its central theme has to be baseball. “The playwrights decide what they want to write about,” O’Connor says. “Each play has some kind of hook, an emotional event that sticks with people. I think Steven’s play Time and Tony Oliva, is a good case-in-point. When I read it, I was really moved by it and each time I’m moved

Daddy to raise money for MSTs new theater. “Joe’s a great guy,” Haworth says. “He loves baseball and playwriting.” Although Haworth is a New York resident, he has been to several shows at MST at its old space at the Monroe Street Center and its new theater space on 14th & Clinton Streets. “The new theater is a great accomplishment,” Haworth says. “A new professional theater for the community. That’s a big thing.” Last year’s 7th Inning Stretch had several plays with religious themes, and this year, at least three plays Cont’d on page 3 WE HAVE  MOVED TO HOBOKEN

District, Open Fist, Project III, Ashland New Play Festival, First Look Festival, and the Long Beach Playhouse New Works Festival. At MST, Haworth’s fulllength play Blue Whitney was given a public reading, and he has worked with MSTs playwright-in-residence, Joseph Gallo, helping him with stage directions when he was touring his solo play Long Gone

are about fathers and sons, O’Connor says. He tries to keep a gender balance with the writers and, this year, three plays are by women playwrights. “In one play, the woman is sneaking off to a game and not telling her husband,” O’Connor says. “She doesn’t want him to go because he’s bad luck. In another, the playwright writes about a father and two sons and their connection to baseball.” And although baseball seems to have diminished in popularity from America’s Favorite Pastime, the baseball plays have remained popular at

MST. “Baseball has so much character to it,” O’Connor says. “I had a theater teacher in college who said

Five years ago, the documentary The Real Rocky aired on PBS and coming up on Fri, May 12, CHUCK starring Liev Schreiber premieres at the Frank Theatres at South Cove Commons in Bayonne. Directed by Philippe Falardeau, the film follows Wepner’s life before and after his March 24, 1975 fight with Muhammad Ali. MAD MEN star Elizabeth Moss, Naomi Watts, and Ron Perlman co-star; and according to IMDB, CHUCK’s writing credits go to Jeff Feuerzeig, Jerry Stahl, Michael Cristofer and Liev Schreiber. Bruce Dillin, Wepner’s PR man and owner of Dillin’s Tires in Bayonne, where he installed a museum of memorabilia from Wepner’s career, and where Wepner sometimes gives press conferences, says the upcoming film premiere on May 12 is going to rock Bayonne’s world. “It’s the biggest thing to happen to Bayonne,

One reviewer on IMDB. com, wrote: “Director Falardeau exquisitely turns what might easily have been another boxing movie into a relationship piece illuminating Wepner’s most difficult moments outside the ring. He depicts the 1970’s much like Martin Scorcese’s Taxi Driver – seedy, wild

That’s the day he will be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame at the historic Convention Center in Asbury Park. Fast friends, they set off down a road fraught with danger, hunger and uncertainty to return the young boy to his family.
