o doubt it’s the “Age of Woman” with shout outs to “girl power” happening every day, and fashionable kitty-eared hats and headbands adorning female heads of all ages. In Jersey City, 107 Bowers Gallery & ArtSpace celebrates this new Age of Woman with its new exhibition, SUPERWOMAN now open and running through April 29. The group show features paintings, sculpture, photography and other media in honor of women with 28 artists participating: Ann Marie Rhiel, Blonde Jenny, Cecilia Martinez, Cheryl Gross, Diane Carbone, Ekaterina Abramova, Gail “Inner Beauty” by Theda Sandiford M. Boykewich, Hao Feng, Hiyasmine Gaskins, Janina Williams, Jean-Antoine Norbert, Jerome China, Jessica Ward-Wells, Leslie Kerby, Leslie Sheryll, Loarina Gonzalez, Luis Alves, Mitch Traphagen, Nancy Tompkins, Phil Vassil, Philip Robinsonj, Rebecca Fraizer, Santiago Cohen, Socrates Marquez, Steve Singer, Theda Sandiford, Wendy Seltzer and Fermin Mendoza. Gallery owner and curator Kristin DeAngelis and her husband Matt Schmidt decided to present the SU“To Light the Darkness” by Fermin Mendoza PERWOMAN show at 107 “This show is giving a For the show, photograBowers Gallery in honor of voice to the artists to show pher Leslie Sheryll of Jerwomen and the positive af- what impact the women sey City reconstructed an fect they have on the artists in their lives have had on old photograph of women and the world-at-large. them,” DeAngelis says. from the 1800s, adding Page 2-March 15-March 31, 2017 River View Observer
“Catherine, Susan, Lottie, Luretia, Alice, Carrie, Kate and Josephine” by Leslie Sheryll yellow flowers and red hearts, and tinting the women’s clothes in rose, purple, yellow and gold. The piece, “Catherine, Susan, Lottie, Luretia, Alice, Carrie, Kate and Josephine” is named for women of the period who participated in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. “Most of my images lately have been from tintypes from anonymous photographers from the late 1800s,” Sheryll says. “I scan them and work with them in Photoshop. I give the women names of the period because I’m trying to make a statement about women’s rights. Women were always in the shadow
of men, so I’m trying to give them an identity.” Sheryll says her piece and the SUPERWOMAN show are all about empowering women; a timely sentiment given the political climate at hand. “Politically right now we’re kind of in trouble,” Sheryll says. “It’s a statement against the administration and a statement that we all have to stand up and look at women at this point in time. We need to look back to our history and see how important it was for women to fight for rights and not just take it for granted.” Cont’d on page 3

Also in the show is a piece by Gail M. Boykewich who creates paper-cut images. Her piece “Brave” is of a woman in white on black with the word ‘Brave’ emanating from her chest, symbolic of the feelings and emotions women have that they keep inside, Boykewich says. “It’s looked down upon or

Response to the show has been incredible, DeAngelis says. The gallery, which is open on weekends, had a very busy opening
reception and already several pieces have sold. A successful tribute, DeAngelis says, to the woman who raised her and helped her become the woman she is today. “I was raised by a strong woman who taught me core values of strength, confidence and grace,” DeAngelis says. “SUPERWOMAN is dedicated to my mom and to all women. ART SPEAKS DISRUPTION Featuring 12 Artists Opens New Series at JC Theater Center Mar. 31 Artists Express Discordant Views on Political Climate Change
By Sally Deering
especially now with the whole political scene. Everything seems divided.”
A
rtists seem to get there ahead of the crowd when it comes to expressing themselves on political matters and the world-at-large. Weeding through Facebook posts to learn what’s trending is one way to get a finger on the political pulse; but sometimes what’s needed is a more soulful understanding that words cannot express, so we turn to artists for their interpretation. There’s a new show opening March 31 at the Jersey City Theater Center, DISRUPTION, an art exhibition and performance series that takes a closer look at the political turmoil facing the world-atlarge – and closer to home – facing the U.S. under the Trump administration. The show featuring 12 artists also examines how people, in turn, are resisting and pushing back against what they believe is disruptive to their lives and the future. “You have disruption from above, what’s happening in the government right now that has already disrupted the lives of people living in America,” Guest Curator Allison Remy Hall says, “and there’s disruption from below, the protests, grassroots types of protests that are working to combat the disruption from above. The work in this show covers different aspects of this disruption, looking at the backroom politics and the highly personal localized aspects of it, the more philosophical and moral questions that have come up.” Lucy Rovetto, Visual Arts Coordinator for JCTC brought

in Remy Hall as guest curator because of her background curating political exhibitions including the “Protect Our Rights/ACLU Fundraiser; The State of the Union; and SERVICE at ShuaSpace in Jersey City. “Allison is a fresh voice who has her finger on the pulse of city life,” Rovetto says. “She is a great fit for JCTC whose mission is to explore relevant topics of our times, engage our communities, and be a laboratory for artists of all disciplines.” Along with the art exhibition, DISRUPTION will feature more than a dozen performances, mainly on weekends, including the first shows to be presented at White Eagle Hall, which is part of the JC Theater Center’s (JCTC) arts complex. Like all JCTC art and performance collaborations, DISRUPTION’s opening reception on Friday, March 31, will feature the premiere of the art show in the gallery, an artists’ talk with the audience and performances of upcoming shows in the series. The JCTC regularly presents art and performances as a thematic series like its previous shows ORIGINS, IDENTITY, VANITY and
“Fight the Power” by MR MUSTART BORDERLESS, which also offered a closer look at contemporary issues through theater, music, and dance. The 12 artists participating in DISRUPTION include Luis Alves, Bang!, Andrew Blumenthal, DISTORT, David LaMorte, Shehrezad Maher, Meredith Miotke, MR MUSTART, Sam Pullin, Fabricio Suarez, Noah Tavlin and Giovani Santoro. Santoro, a multidisciplinary artist, and a veteran who who served honorably in the US Navy from 2002-2007, holds a B.A. in Visual Art and an M.A. in Public Media from Fordham University. Santoro is the founder and director of Housing 4 Veterans: Men & Women for Others, providing outreach and art therapy for veterans experiencing homelessness and mental health issues. Santoro says his one mixed-media piece in DISRUPTION (on the cover) has everything to do with being visually disrupted. “My piece focuses on spiritual disruption—the parts of our identities that distort the way we see each other,” Santoro says. “My life is somehow disrupted every day,
Local artist Luis Alves works in photo collage and creates his works with images from magazines. He characterizes his art as pop culture with advertising influences, vibrant colors and bold compositions. Alves has exhibited in many solo shows, and group exhibitions at Raven Gallery & Boutique and L.I.T.M. – both in Jersey City. “Media and art exert powerful influences over all of us through continuous, evolving processes of reflection and creation,” Alves says. “In the end, the actual work is not about the thing on display;it’s about how society, particularly American society, obsessively consumes myth and fakery. Each collage composition is hand-manipulated with the goal of transformation as a way of commenting on, satirizing or criticizing the source material.” Meredith Miotke of Brooklyn is an illustrator and pattern designer born and raised in the Detroit-area. She is a College for Creative Studies’ graduate and former designer at Converse. Her work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, 3x3, and Creative Quarterly. One piece she will exhibit in DISRUPTION
features items like a pizza slice, a pill bottle, and a speculum used in gynecological examinations done in bright Pop Art colors. “This piece represents the idea that daily life (for a lot of people) is inherently political,” Miotke says, “and can be threatened, or disrupted by government policy.” “Artists have a really good reason for protesting no matter what their background is,” Remy Hall says. “The individual experience that artists portray in their work, that is their truth and the truth is their experience. They can use that to communicate solidarity and speak truth to power. The one thing that gives me hope out of all of this is how people are coming together, wanting to do something.” If you go Disruption (art show) March 31-June 9 Opening Reception Fri, Mar. 31, 6:30-10 pm Artist Reception at 6:30; Artist Talk-Back at 7:30 Previews & Performances at 8:30 Jersey City Theater Center Merseles Studios 339 Newark Ave, JC (201) 795-5386 www.jctcenter.org

n the heart of the Downtown Van Vorst section of Jersey City, the Kitchen Step bistro offers Progressive American cuisine in an open and airy space that’s down to earth with natural wood tables, eco green banquettes and paintings of leaves and tree branches hanging from the dining room ceiling.
General Manager Kenneth Rosado and the staff
at Kitchen Step go the distance when it comes to customer service, which is evident when the 60-seat eatery fills up during weekend brunch with customers clamoring for dishes like the Nutella Swirl Pancakes and Truffle Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon. “We are a neighborhood restaurant,” Rosado says, as the crew prepares for a busy Friday night. “We had big shows to fill when we opened a year ago last February. This was where Thirty Acres used to be.” Kitchen Step’s marketinspired progressive American menu designed by executive chef Ryan DePersio seems to be a well-thought-out offering of creative takes on classic American dishes. The menu features Snacks like Marinated Olives & Candied Almonds; Zucchini Fries and Harissa
