the towns and cities of Hudson and the island of Manhattan, have always been a cultural rainbow of people living and working side-by-side whose ancestors hail from all parts of the world. Do their origins affect who they are and how they live today? Questions like this are the focus of the Jersey City Theater Center’s new monthlong multi-media (“Self Portrait” by Ramapough Lenape artist Jack Crying Raven Anderson of Westwood) event, ORIGINS, a series of art, film, theater and discussion that explores the topic in-depth. Running through Dec. 3rd, ORIGINS examines the topic from several points of view; and Artistic Director Olga Levina hopes the month-long series will inspire visitors to examine their (Cont’d on page 3 )

A LIFE IN TWO ACTS

Rich Dwyer of Bayonne Juggles the Actor’s Life with High Voltage Construction By Sally Deering

ich Dwyer lives two lives, one as Public Affairs Manager at PSE&G overseeing high voltage construction projects and the other as a character actor taking on all sorts of roles in local theater. By year’s end, Dwyer will have performed in seven plays and musicals including ELF The Musical which opens Dec. 4th at the West Hudson Arts & Theater Company in Kearny. A passion for acting that grew from a postcollege interest more than 20 years ago, Dwyer has spent the past 10 years taking on roles to develop his craft. Currently, he can be seen on stage as Tom, the dog in the children’s theater production of “Cinderella! Cinderella!” at the Hudson Ensemble Theater in Hoboken. Portraying Cinderella’s adopted pooch who protects her like a loyal sidekick has been one of the most difficult roles he’s had so far, Dwyer

Rich Dwyer says. Audiences might also remember his portrayal of Riff Raff in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with the Center Players of Bayonne; the Ghost of Christmas Present in “A Christmas Carol” at Victory Hall; and Vice Principal Douglas Panch in “The Putnam County Spelling Bee” at the JCC. My wife Irene took our son, Eamonn – he was just a kid – and when I came onstage, he called out, “Hey that’s my dad!” The audience cracked up. (The Dwyers also have a daughter, Shannon.) I did three or four shows after ‘A Christmas Carol’ including THE ADDAMS FAMILY musical for the Stony Hill Players in Summit where I played Lurch. RVO: And now, you’re currently playing Tom the dog in “Cinderella! Cinderella!” at the Hudson Theatre Ensemble. How’s the show going? RD: A dog is not an easy role. JERSEY CITY VETERANS DAY PARADE

On Nov. 8 at 10 am, Parade Kicks Off at City Hall Marchers to Gather at Historic Cemetery to Place Flags on Soldiers’ Graves

River View Observer Staff For more than seven years, the all-volunteer mission operating and preserving the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery on Newark Avenue (across from Dickinson High School) has presented “Honoring our Heroes” a military and musical tribute to U.S. veterans. The cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of veterans from wars that took place during the Revolutionary era, the War of 1812, Spanish-American War, Civil War, WWI and WWII, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. This year, on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 10 am, cemetery

volunteers will partner with Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop’s administration to host the Jersey City Veterans Day Parade which will feature U.S. Veterans, military and public safety personnel, marching bands, ROTC, military vehicles, vintage cars, scouts, drum corps and Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors, and military dogs The parade will begin at City Hall and march up Newark Avenue to the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery where a musical tribute will begin at 11:30 am. The Program will feature guest speakers and entertainment by Hudson

View Entertainment’s “The Sunshine Girls” and “The Dream Team” including Chimene Petit, Eva Skolar, Aart Markenstein, and a special appearance by MTV Artist LOVARI. The Program also includes a 21 Gun Salute, a Wreath Ceremony and Blessing of the American Flags.

Parade-goers are welcome to participate by placing a flag on a soldier’s grave at the end of the ceremony. “It’s a beautiful program that includes guest speakers and a full USO type of show right inside the cemetery grounds.” Volunteer/ President Eileen Markenstein says. “For several years now, we talked about how wonderful it would be to bring back the Veterans Day Parade to Jersey City. This year, Mayor Fulop reached out to partner with us.” There will be seating at the Cemetery for 250 guests and participants are also welcome to bring their own folding chairs. Refresh-

ments will be available at the cemetery. If you go Parade begins at City Hall Continues up Newark Avenue to the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery 435 Newark Ave, JC For more info: 201-707-0738 www.jerseycitycemetery.org Did You Know...

This reconfiguration is being done in an effort to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection of 53rd Street and Broadway during the period of time that the New Jersey Turnpike will not be able to be accessed from East 53rd Street. Breakfast 24/7

The VIP Diner Fits the Bill Go for the Java; Stay for the Specials

By Sally Deering Some folks consider themselves wine connoisseurs; others can tell you where to find the best pizza; or the tastiest taco in town. If you were raised in New Jersey, however, chances are you know your diners and which one has the best lemon merengue pie; the juiciest cheeseburger deluxe; and chippiest chocolate chip pancakes. Of course, it always boils down to the java. If the coffee tastes lousy; a diner’s profits can swirl

down the drain faster than a soggy fruit cocktail. Diners are everywhere in Hudson, which has several standouts. Some that are open late, others that stay open all night like the VIP Diner on Kennedy Boulevard one block south of Journal Square. No matter what time of day it is, customers can slide into a booth, open that huge, spiral-bound menu and order breakfast for dinner, and dinner for breakfast. Whether its Sunday morning waffles or Mother’s

Day omelets, the VIP aims to please. The menu offers, soups, hot and cold sandwiches, entrees and every day the specials feature goodies like Mousaka with layers of potato and eggplant; Spinach Pie with melted feta cheese between the layers of Filo; Fish & Chips, and Chicken, Beef, Seafood and Pasta dishes. The service at the VIP is always top notch; and in the dining room, tables can be pushed together to accommodate corporate

lunches. Again, when a diner like the VIP stays open 24/7 the customers can order just about anything anytime. Several YELP reviews give the VIP high praise. Alms C. of Jersey City loves the VIP’s breakfast: “We usually cook our breakfast but we eat in

diners from time to time. And today was that time. Just by chance we came in here and ordered omelette and pancakes. The food was delicious. Pancakes were fluffy and soft and omelette was not too salty or sweet…” Cont’d on page 15

STARGAZINE Nov.2015 Aries- March 21 - April 19

This month is the time when you focus on friends and family! Yes, it is the month of Thanksgiving but activity to the eleventh house governing friends, hopes and wishes makes for intense relationships now. Exciting gatherings are highlighted and you enjoy and build connections that last a lifetime.

Taurus- April 20 - May 20

Activity to the twelfth house governing, among other things, your psychological makeup may have you mulling over the past with remorse and a bit of anger. If this energy can be channeled into positive thoughts you could quite possibly be relieved of the dark and heavy weight that has saddled you for years. Forgiveness is the key! You will then be a beast of burden, no more!

Gemini- May 21 - June 20

Your personal magnetism is high as activity to the first house gives you that extra bit of pizazz! People will be drawn by your charisma and hang on your every word. Use this attraction factor to glide you forward in work or personal venues. It can be a steppingstone towards achievement this month and beyond! Use it or lose it!

Cancer -June 21 - July 22

There will be a temptation to cut corners by fluffing the truth. A small white lie, a victimless crime or so you will tell yourself. This mistruth can create an avalanche of destruction. The astral energy suggests that you don’t take liberties with facts. Play it safe and do the right thing. You will shortly see evidence of the wisdom of this advice!

Leo -July 23 - August 22

Power and money are the domain of the proud Lion but of all these gifts, respect is most desired. A friend may misinterpret your actions and frown upon what they feel are negative motives. They don’t understand your strong code of honor. They have misjudged you and will apologize. However, the friendship has been tainted and won’t ever be the same. They have learned a valuable lesson.

Virgo -August 23 - Sept. 22

Jupiter, Venus and Mars all in your sign give you the strength and luck to attract benefits. You will share your good fortune with those close to you and enjoy a wonderful season. These gifts increase over time and have you achieving great strides in personal and business areas. The stars are working on your behalf.

Libra-Sept. 23 - October 22

Aspects to the fifth house show some unrest with children in your immediate family. Fifth house issues also deal with gambling. The astral advice suggests that in games of chance and relationships with younger family members caution be exercised. Especially this month but as a general rule it is good sense not to risk peace and security

Scorpio - October 23 - Nov. 21

You have the ability to see through the hidden veil of the character of others. You can detect a tall tale when you hear one and see the motives behind the story. This month the true intentions of a coworker will be crystal clear to you. You save the day with your astute business sense and are rewarded. Enjoy, Detective Scorpio!

Sagittarius -Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

Saturn can be a good thing if we abide by its lessons. These lessons are different for every Sagittarius but if you observe you will notice a pattern. Just realize that you will be more determined to achieve success and strongly focused towards your goals at this time.

Capricorn -Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

There will be great changes in your work responsibilities beginning this month and after your birthday/solar return. These are just what the Capricorn native loves. Work challenges mixed with financial gain are what you live for and enjoy!

Aquarius -Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

This is a time for ninth house activities of higher learning and long distance travel . You may go by boat, plane, or book. So get your passport, library card or become a student. You will explore and grow and the stars approve.

Pisces -Feb. 19 - March 20

Pouting and complaining may have gotten results when you were five but playing the victim card is getting old and the years are passing for you as well. Look upon this personality quirk as simply a habit that needs to be changed. Now moving forward embrace a new attitude where you are in control and take responsibility for your actions. It will be a spiritual release and you may discover a thing called happiness!! You deserve the best.
