ou can see it from Rt. 139 feeding into the Holland Tunnel or catch it from downtown Jersey City as you head into Hoboken. David Bowie’s image 18-stories high on the side of the Cast Iron Lofts in Jersey City, painted by international muralist Eduardo Kobra. Bowie passedaway January 10th of this year, but his music and artistry live on throughout the world; and Kobra’s mural is now part of the Jersey City landscape, an urban landmark and the latest addition to the Jersey City Mural Arts Program. 5
On Fri, Nov. 4, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, members of the City Council, local real estate developers, and local artists welcomed Kobra to Jersey City and thanked him for painting the dazzling, eye-catching image of David Bowie. Mayor Fulop held the press conference on the building’s 5th floor deck where visitors could get an upclose look at the mural, and meet and take pictures with Kobra who spent the past few weeks painting from a scaffold hanging 180-feet off the side of the Cast Iron Lofts hi-rise on Jersey Avenue. The Mural Arts Program which links established and emerging local, national
Kobra and Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop and international mural artists with property owners city-wide is part of a beautification project to reduce graffiti and engage local residents. Murals are painted on walls throughout
Jersey City, turning Jersey City into a public art gallery. According to Mayor Fulop, public art is a shared experience. “I’m a believer in public art,” Mayor Fulop told the crowd. “If you look at every period of time, public art is a reflection of what’s happening during that time. It’s symbolic of the times we live in. I’m proud of what we’re doing. Jersey City is a thriving art community, and a welcoming community.” Real estate developer Paul Silverman of SILVERMAN Properties in Jersey City, attended the event.
Silverman, who owns several properties in Jersey City, said having artists paint murals on buildings enhances the aesthetics of A Full Service Bo Jersey City’s architecture Compa and brightensPiano up the vibes in the neighborhood. Cont’d on page 3

KOBRA & BOWIE Cont’d from page 2 “A mural brings attention and discussion,” Silverman said. “It improves the building’s value and it helps make people proud. It changes your feelings about a neighborhood.” “I think it’s awesome,” local muralist 4Sakn of Jersey City said. “The scale and the colors. The geometric shapes mixed with realism.” 4Sakn sees the mural of David Bowie as a tribute to Bowie’s influence on the music industry. He said, “It’s a memorial to Bowie and all the music he created.” Kobra’s fame as a mural artist is as international as his mural projects. He just earned entry into the
cities throughout the world including London, Athens, Lyon, Los Angeles and New York. Kobra, who is Brazilian and spoke through an interpreter, was asked why he chose an image of David Bowie to paint on the Cast Iron Lofts.
Muralist 4Sakn of Jersey City Guinness Book of World Records for the “largest spray paint mural by a team” for his “Ethnicities” mural featuring five faces from five continents painted outside the Rio 2016 Olympic stadium. Working with a four-person crew, Kobra’s murals enhance the landscape of many major
“I wanted to paint David Bowie because he is
an icon and I wanted to represent his life to all of his fans,” Kobra told the assembled guests. He mentioned how thrilled he was to be in Jersey City and how an early visit to New York City when he was a boy helped shape his love of art. “When I was 12, I was inspired by New York artists,” Kobra said. “That’s what made me who I am today. I have enjoyed working on this project. It’s been a privilege and honor to be here.” Artists John Ruddy and John Falcon are the curators of the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour’s gallery on the first floor of the Cast Iron Lofts building. Ruddy said Kobra’s mural of David Bowie stretches the limits of identity and
creativity. “An icon like David Bowie is a local hero in the spiritual sense,” Ruddy said. “It’s timely,” Falcon said, “and to have someone on the level of Kobra is great. He’s painted one of the biggest murals in the world.” Falcon said the Murals Project has established Jersey City as an art city. Cont’d on page 4

“Its great energy,” Novado said. “It’s a wonderful interpretation of David Bowie. By the scale of the piece, I would compare it to the Pyramids of Egypt.” For more info on the Mural Arts Project, go to www.jerseycityculture.org For more info on Kobra, go to www.eduardokobra. com River View Observer We Support the Arts

Jersey City Free Public Library presents a book reading and discussion featuring author Tim Murphy on his latest book CHRISTODORA, Praised by the New York Times as “a sprawling social novel in the Tom Wolfe tradition,” Tim Murphy’s CHRISTODORA is a bold and poignant portrait of the bohemian Manhattan of sex, drugs, art, and activism, spanning from the early 1980s into the near future. In the Washington Post, Garth Greenwell called CHRISTODORA “Powerful...hugely ambitious....No book has made me feel so intensely not just the ravages of AIDS but also the devastating cost of activism
Christodora recounts a crucial chapter in the history of queer life, which is to say in the history of American life. It’s also, for all the despair it documents, a book about hope.”

America’s Got Talent Finalist Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti with Mike Marino and Jersey City’s Doughboys At Bayonne Masonic Hall November 25th Sal Valentinetti is the definition of an old soul with an olive oil voice and Italian charm. Valentinetti first learned the American standards at his grandmother’s knee and his passion grew
further when he discovered his hidden vocal talent in his teenage years. His voice may seem like his strongest asset, but anyone who knows him, knows that it’s his personality that shines brighter than the

ART FOR JUSTICE Artists donate Works to raise Money for ACLU
ShuaSpace Gallery Curator invites Artists to Participate
By Sally Deering In the wake of the recent presidential election, the local art scene seems to be taking a political stance, especially at ShuaSpace art gallery in Jersey City, which will be hosting an art auction to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU. The money raised will be designated for cases the ACLU takes on based on discrimination. On Sat, Dec. 3, from 5-10 pm at the ShuaSpace gallery, curator Allison Remy-Hall will host the art auction for the ACLU. So far, participating artists are Peter Bill, Lawrence Ciarallo, DISTORT, Narciso Espiritu, Allison RemyHall, Nathalie Kalbach, Meredith Miotke, Bruno Nadalin, Sam Pullin,

BAYONNE ANNOUNCES COMBAT WOUNDED VETERAN PARKING INITIATIVE Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis today announced the City of Bayonne’s “Combat Wounded Veteran Parking Initiative.” This initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Wounded Warrior’s Family Support’s sign distribution program (Wounded Warrior Family Support is NOT affiliated with the Wounded Warrior Project). “We’ve been in contact with Wounded Warriors Family Support over the past several weeks and look forward to the implementation of the program in key
public areas throughout the City. This is just a small way of giving back to those who have already given all of us so much,” said Mayor Davis. Earlier this week the City of Bayonne received ten (10) signs which designate parking spaces for United States combat wounded veterans. LA ISLA RESTAURANT UPTOWN Cuban Dishes, Hispanic Wines and Mouth-Watering Mojitos Open, Sexy Atmosphere with plenty of Cuban Hospitality By Sally Deering
La Isla Restaurant on Washington Street up the block from City Hall has been a Hoboken staple, serving Cuban cuisine in a tiny space where you have to step outside to change your mind. Riding on the success of its downtown location, La Isla Uptown located on 12th Street and Maxwell Place takes Cuban cuisine to a whole new level in an atmosphere that’s open, aery and filled with Cuban hospitality. At La Isla Uptown, its more of a fine-dining experience compared to the luncheonette feeling of La Isla downtown, says wine director and general manager Andres Montoya. The uptown restaurant is huge and open with seating for one-hundred in the dining room, at the bar, and in the front of the restaurant that features a counter and stools for those who want to dine and dash. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls, marble floor tiles, and the ceiling fans in dark brown wood make a visitor feel as if they stepped inside a Havana bistro. Along with the beautiful décor, La Isla Uptown has a liquor license which means great wine, beer and Mojitos, Montoya says. “We only carry Hispanic wines from Cuba, Spain, Chile, Uruguay,”
Montoya says, “and our most popular Mojito is our Pineapple-Habanera Pepper Mojito. Its got a kick to it.” Montoya, who is a Level-4 Sommelier, says La Isla’s success has a lot to do with great service as well as great food. “There’s a certain magical feel about delivering an exceptional dining experience,” Montoya says. “Seeing someone taste our food with a glass of wine and seeing that they like those flavors, is very important to us. We want to give our customers the romantic flavors of Cuba.”
La Isla Uptown’s menu features appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. Here’s a sampling: appetizers include Empanada de Pollo o Carne, pastry turnover filled with chicken or ground beef; Croqueta de Jamon, ground smoked ham and onion, breaded and fried; Ceviche de Camarones, fire-roasted tomato, citrus, cilantro, and
Wine director and general manager Andres Montoya (second from left) and La Isla Uptown crew

oil, served with plantain chips; and Montaditos, shrimp and chorizo over tostones with red chimichurri. ($3-$10)
Entrees feature Camarones Enchilado, jumbo shrimp sautéed in olive oil, garlic, onion, peppers, olives and creole-style sauce; Arroz Con Pollo a La Chorrera, Cuban-style chicken and saffron risotto, green peas, pimentos, served with sweet plantain; Salmón Chino-Latino, black bean miso-glazed salmon served over Cuban-style fried rice and tostones; Bistek de Palomilla, sirloin steak pounded thin, seared and topped with caramelized onions; Churrasco con Chimichurri, marinated, grilled skirt steak topped with chopped raw onion, served with an Argentinean style steak sauce; and Robalo Entero, boneless pan-roasted whole Branzino served with coconut creole sauce. ($17-$28) Breakfast is served Tuesday through Saturday and the menu features dishes from the griddle and served with organic 100% Cont’d on page 17
LA ISLA RESTAURANT UPTOWN Cont’d from page 16
Breakfast is served Tuesday through Saturday and the menu features dishes from the griddle and served with organic 100% pure Dutchess County maple syrup, like Omar’s Stuffed French Toast, egg bread filled with strawberry/guava cream cheese, dipped in cinnamon batter and coated with corn flakes and almonds. Buttermilk Pancakes; La Isla Huevos Rancheros, two poached eggs, spicy tomato sauce in a fried tortilla shell served over black beans with a side of rice; Churrasco a Caballo con Arroz y Frijoles Negros, grilled skirt steak topped with red onion served with fried eggs, rice and black beans; and El Balsero, two poached eggs over shredded flank steak, rice and black beans. ($8$15) La Isla Restaurant Uptown has been open a year now; and business is incredible, Montoya says. The restaurant is open seven days a week with breakfast served every day except Monday. And on Sunday, brunch is served. There’s also a Happy Hour Monday through Friday
from 4-7 pm. “At Happy Hour, you can have a Cuban Sandwich and a Mojito for less than $15,” Montoya says.
Chef Omar Giner And, of course, a restaurant is only as good as the food it serves and owner and Chef Omar Giner and his talent are the real reason for the restaurant’s success. Formerly a pastry chef, Chef Omar’s desserts are out of this world, like the Flan de Leche Tradicional, Cuban crème caramel; Tres Leches, vanilla sponge cake soaked in three milks and rum, topped with meringue; Arroz con Leche, rice pudding; Pionono, sponge cake filled with dulce de leche and chocolate glaze; Torta de Limon Frisado con Almivar de Cilantro, frozen key lime pie with cilantro/lime syrup and toasted almonds; Torta de Queso y Mango, coconut mango cheesecake with mango sauce; and Empanada Guayaba, guava and cream cheese turnover. ($5.50-$7) “Most of the recipes are Chef Omar’s family
recipes,” Montoya says. “Mama’s recipes, old school, Cuban-style recipes. Chef Omar is as Cuban as it comes.” Chef Omar’s culinary talents were challenged recently in an episode of Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, where Chef Flay challenged Chef Omar to a French toast cook-off. Chef Omar won the challenge. Chef Omar was also featured on Diners, DriveIns and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri, where Chef Omar prepared Croqueta de Jamon, ground smoked ham and onion, breaded and fried. Montoya says Chef Omar’s passion for cooking the dishes of his country are the true essence of La Isla’s cuisine. “When you own a restaurant, you have to be passionate about food,” Montoya*Pork says. “It’s all about the Chops Bitsy experience you want (Potatoes, Onions, Sweetpeople or Hot Peppers) to feel.” 2 Pork Chops 1½ inch cut If you go La*Veal IslaScaloppini Restaurant (Red orUptown White) 25 12th*Chicken St, HOB Milanese (201) 659-6090 *NY Strip Steak with Potatoes & Vegetables laislarestaurant.com Hours: Tues-Sat, 8 am-10 pm; Sun, 10 am-9 pm; Mon: 5-10 pm Reservations: opentable.com Home delivery: seamless. com; grubhub.com

Donna Reed’s Daughter Will Host a Screening of “It’s A Wonderful Life” At Loew’s Jersey- As Part Of The Classic Holiday Show -- On Stage &Screen Back in the glory days of the Movie Palace, many of the big, downtown theatres presented Christmas pageants that combined a live stage show with a film. The show would feature some of the season’s most loved music, a skit or two, and even an audience singalong with the theatre’s massive pipe organ. Then the stage curtain would close, and when it reopened a holiday-themed movie filled the big screen. If a lot of us are too young to have experienced this kind of Movie Palace show back in the day, the idea of going downtown to gather in a grand theatre with family, friends and even strangers to share in the magic of the season still lives on as a kind of collective holiday memory. . . or, more accurately, wish. The Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre makes that wish come true, and creates
lasting new memories every Christmastime with The Classic Holiday Show. 2:00PM On Stage: A Traditional Holiday Concert & Sing-Along A live concert of holiday classics performed by Taresa Blunda, Howard Richman, the Litha Symphony Orchestra, and Bernie Anderson playing the Loew’s Wonder Morton Pipe Organ. They will perform some of the most cherished classics of the season, along with some newer favorites. There’ll even be an audience singalong, just like in the old days! And following the concert, at 3:30 PM, one of most beloved holiday movies of all time will be shown on the big screen: 3:30PM On Screen: “It’s A Wonderful Life” Starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore. Directed by Frank Capra. (1946, 12 5mins., B&W)

Jersey City now has the title as the most livable city in the United States according to SmartAsset a personal finance technology company headquartered in New York City that uses financial modeling to power advice on major financial decisions. To find the most livable cities SmartAsset considered six factors including population density. In a study of 93 cities SmartAsset found that Jersey City has the thirdhighest population density, third-highest income after
housing and is fourth in walkability. Because of the city’s proximity to New York. The study also found that a person living in Jersey City can easily work in Manhattan (where the jobs tend to be higher paying), while enjoying the lower living costs associated with Jersey City. The study also found that Jersey City residents have $35,452 on average in expandable income after housing costs.
