HONORING HEROES JC Veterans Day Parade kicks-off Sat, Nov. 12 at noon Standing up for Those Who Serve and Those who have Fallen By Sally Deering

n these troubled times, the U.S. turns to its military, the men and women (and four-legged, bomb-sniffing soldiers) to protect America’s freedom and democracy. On Sat, Nov. 12, starting at noon, Jersey City Mayor and U.S. Marine Veteran Steven M. Fulop and the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, local U.S. military men and women and other dignitaries will lead the 2nd annual Parade of Veterans and Heroes followed by a Veterans Resource Fair that

will be held at City Hall until 5 pm. The Parade of Veterans and Heroes is open to anyone who would like to march, especially men and women who are serving and have served in the military. Registration for participants will begin at 10 am at the Historic Jersey City Harsimus Cemetery on Newark Avenue near Dickinson High School. (You can also register online.) The parade begins with a remembrance ceremony at Dickinson High School’s Vietnam Memorial and a special dedication to fallen soldier, US Army Pvt. 2,

The parade then kickoffs from there and heads down Newark Avenue with designated honorees Yolanda Amiker, Glen Flora, Phil Lore, John Scafidi, and John Trambley, led by Grand Marshal Tony Goodson, Vietnam Veteran and Commander of the Samuel R. Shelton Post VFW #2294. “It is a great honor,” Goodson says “This parade is very important for me because Vietnam vets, especially, were never really credited with the honor most war vets receive.

Parade Grand Marshal Tony Goodson, U.S. Army, NCO-E5 We had a unique war, and the Vietnam veteran was unfairly treated. But I’m not so much about whining about the inequities back then. Instead, I focus my energy on the memories of all the war veterans, all the soldiers that were killed in action, the Service guys who served our country. Following Goodson and the U.S. military men and women will be Welcome Home Vets of NJ and Eight Flames of Hope, Snyder and Dickinson High School marching bands, Cont’d on page 3

The Line-of-March will east down Newark Avenue and will finish at Jersey City Hall with a Motorcycle and Vintage Car Show and the Veterans Resource Fair. Live entertainment will be provided by local favorites Cabaret Sauvignon and the Gully Hubbards. At the Veterans Resource Fair following the parade, organizations like Vets Chat/Chew, Npower Technology Services Corps, and other state and non-profit groups will offer info on veterans’ housing, employment and wellness. An Opening Reception for a veterans’ art exhibit will be

held in the Rotunda Gallery on the 3rd floor. All artwork created by veterans, Combat Paper, members of the police and fire departments, and active military personnel. There will be light refreshments and a cake donated by Cake Boss Buddy of Carlos Bakery in Hoboken. Born and raised in Jersey City, Parade Grand Marshal Tony Goodson served six years in the army including a tour-of-duty in Vietnam from 1970-71. As President of the Jersey City VFW Post #2294, Goodson hosts many events for veterans and their families. The VFW also decorates veterans’ graves at New York Bay Cemetery on Garfield Avenue, and Harsimus Cemetery on Newark

Avenue in Jersey City. “At the VFW, we have a lot of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)-affected veterans,” Goodson says. “We see the Post as a place of peace and salvation and we have dinners throughout the year for veterans and their families, where we reflect upon the blessings we have. My job is to keep that alive, to remind the public to give a little thought and thanks to a veteran and never forget the sacrifice.” If you go Sat, Nov. 12 at noon 2nd annual Jersey City Veterans Day Parade Dickinson High School to City Hall 280 Grove St, JC (Corner of Palisade Ave/ Newark Ave to City Hall on Grove Street)

One of the Largest Names in the International Mural Scene, KOBRA, Paints Massive New Mural in Jersey City

Kobra’s Iconic Murals Include Portraits of Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Bob Dylan, Nelson Mandela, and John Lennon, with Murals in More than 20 Countries and 30 U.S. Projects

Fresh off setting the Guinness Book of World Records for the “largest spray paint mural by a team” with his Rio 2016 Olympic Games-inspired “Ethnicities,” internationally-renowned, Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra has brought his unique vision and talent to Jersey City. Widely known simply as Kobra, the sought-after artist has finished work on a 180-foot tall mural of David Bowie on the façade of 837 Jersey Avenue in downtown Jersey City. Kobra, whose murals of notable historical figures include Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Bob Dylan, Nelson Mandela, and John Lennon, are painted utilizing bright colors and bold lines while incorporating a kaleidoscope theme. Much of Kobra’s work represents fraternity, respect for the other cultures and acceptance and love for differences, which was one of the reasons he was approached for the Jersey City Mural Art Program that is rooted in the city’s diversity. Kobra has worked in more than 20 countries and created more than 30 projects in the United States alone, with murals in London, Athens, Lyon, Los Angeles and New York. “Jersey City has one of the most diverse and expansive mural arts programs in the country and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Kobra to contribute to the artistic landscape

of our city,” said Mayor Fulop. “His work is recognized around the world and his Jersey City mural will not only be our largest to date, but will also be an iconic image that will draw people here to visit the mural and our entire collection of outdoor art.” “It’s great to see that Jersey City has embraced street art through its mural program and I’m very happy to be a part of it,” said Kobra. Launched in 2013 by Mayor Steven Fulop to foster arts and cultural awareness, the Mural Arts Program has effectively transformed the City into an outdoor gallery through the creative works of local, national and international street artists, including Shepard Fairey, Pixel Pancho, Karski & Beyond, Fintan McGee, Faith47, and WK Interact, and local artists Mustart, Fermin Mendoza, Lissanne Lake and Catherine Hart. The new installation took place during Jersey City’s Annual ARTober festivities that kicked off with the 26th Annual Jersey City Art and Studio Tour (JCAST), a city-wide showcase of the arts featuring nearly 1,000 participating artists in hundreds of venues that include private studios, galleries, local businesses, and pop-up and public spaces. To further integrate the Kobra mural into the local Jersey City art celebration – which ran through the end of October a 10,000-

Kobra’s David Bowie Mural in Jersey City square-foot pop-up gallery has opened in the 17th Street retail space of the Cast Iron Lofts building that displays a collection of works from nearly half of the participating artists in Jersey City’s Mural Arts Program.

37th Hoboken Artists Studio Tour City to Celebrate its Painters, Sculptors & Artisans

By Sally Deering

O

ver the years, Hoboken’s become a pricey place to hang your hat, but on the bright side. Hoboken’s artist population has not withered due to the city’s high cost of living. Through good and bad economic times, Hoboken’s artist community continues to thrive, entertain and nourish the city’s need for culture, ideas and visions expressed outside the box. To celebrate the city’s wealth of artists and their contributions to Hoboken’s cultural landscape, Mayor Dawn Zimmer and Director of Cultural Affairs Geri Fallo will host the 37th annual Hoboken Artists Studio Tour on Sun, Nov. 6, from noon-to-6 pm. This free, citywide walking tour features more than 100 artists who will show their work in studios, art galleries & group exhibitions in 25 Hoboken locations worth exploring. (Download the Hoboken Artist Studio Tour Map & Artists’ Directory at www.hobokennj.gov/artists-studio-tour/; available as of Fri, Nov. 4.) Artist Eugene Gleason has lived 33 years in Hoboken and will be showing about 30 paintings at his studio at 2 Constitution Way on 14th Street. Many of Gleason’s paintings are local Hoboken scenes like the old Hess gas station that was on 14th and Willow

“Hoboken Winter Gas” by Eugene Gleason Ave; and a snowy Bloomfield Street. A self-taught artist, Gleason describes himself as a “recovering” architect.

“Bloomfield Snow” by Eugene Gleason “I’ve never done any kind of real show in a gallery,” Gleason says, but I went to the (Hoboken) Studio Tour last year, and I saw some really great works especially in the studio lofts in the south end of town. I said whoa, maybe I should give it a whirl.” Alex Sobolta grew up in Allendale and lives in Hoboken. A self-taught artist, Sobolta has been painting for seven years. He describes himself as a Jack-of-All-Trades who paints, writes and does video production. Sobolta will be exhibiting 12 pieces at Cork, a wine store on 15th and Washington Streets on the day of the Studio Tour. “I’m hoping to bring some life to 15th Street,” Sobolta says. “This is my first studio tour.

“Harshmellow” by Alex Sobolta I sold some pieces at the Hoboken Art & Music Festival and I hope to increase my exposure at the Hoboken Studio Tour. It’ll be great meeting people who come in. I hope they take a card, and keep me in mind. As long as people dig it, that’s cool. I do it for myself and if other people are into it, that’s awesome. I hope somebody sees it, likes it, and tells their friends.” The Hoboken Artists Studio Tour Map and Artist Directory will be available the day of the tour at Hoboken City Hall on Washington Street. According to the Office of Cultural Affairs, “the tour is designed so that visitors can easily walk from studio-to-studio, and gallery-to-gallery. Since Hoboken is only a mile square, every site is convenient to the next. As diverse as the art itself, the tour’s popularity draws artists far beyond the banks of Hoboken. You will see art in many forms, representing an exciting variety of mediums. Meet the artists and witness the creative process at work.”

“Dance Break” by Kate Faust Originally from Harrington Park, Kate Faust, a New York City resident, exhibited and sold several pieces at last year’s Hoboken Artists Studio Tour. She will be exhibiting her oil paintings again this year at the Monroe Art Center. “I’ll be showing some ballet shoe paintings, still-lifes, and landscapes,” Faust says. “At last year’s Studio Tour, we had a good turn-out. I sold a couple of paintings.” It was a year ago, right around the time of last year’s Studio Tour that Faust was moving into her art studio at Monroe Art Center. “I met a lot of people from Hoboken during the Studio Tour,” Faust says. “It was nice. I had my cards all printed. There’s a nice camaraderie among the artists in the building.” Wildlife photographer Annalee Van Kleeck of Hoboken will be exhibiting her photographs of birds, the group Skanatra, the Erie Lackawanna Terminal and the city of Hoboken. “I’ve been photographing a lot of birds this year,” Van Kleeck says. “I started looking around for subjects and realized there are birds everywhere. So, I started shooting birds in Hoboken.

“The Crow” by Annalee Van Kleeck I started looking at marshlands and meadowlands, the Mill Creek Marsh Trail. Geri Fallo thinks I should do a Hoboken birds show at the Hoboken Museum.”

“Eastern Starlings” by Annalee Van Kleeck Van Kleeck worked most of her career in the non-profit sector and now spends much of her time photographing. She photographs birds these days because she enjoys the challenge. “I used to go out fishing at 5 in the morning and spend all day out there,” Van Kleeck says. “Photographing birds is a lot like fishing. You got out and spend five hours waiting for the scene to come to you. You have to learn how to be invisible so they don’t run away from you.”

on your cell phone The Township of Weehawken has a new waterfront attraction: the $3.1 million Weehawken Recreational Pier, designed by McLaren Engineering Group in collaboration with RSC Architects. This pier project, which has been in the works for 15 years, stretches nearly 500 feet into the Hudson River, directly opposite the Empire State Building. The unique pier features a “pod” design with a series of platforms and interconnected walkways, providing a variety of destination points for visitors. “McLaren developed the groundbreaking new ’pier pod’ design concept, and we believe it’s a bold, revolutionary new way to construct piers compared to traditional box-like configurations,” says Shea Thorvaldsen, P.E., Director, Infrastructure and Marine at McLaren Engineering Group. “Because there is no heavy structure, a pier designed this way is much cheaper to build and offers the ability to expand easily.” The pier boasts five pods connected by 10-foot-wide walkways, each designed for a specific use. A kayak pod offers launch space for kayakers, and a raised hexagonal

pod creates an ideal area for viewing the city and the surrounding waterfront. Additional pods are designed for fishing and educational visits. The pods range in size from 700 to 2,500 square feet. The new Weehawken Recreation Pier replaces a structure that had been destroyed in 1993 and is located northeast of the intersection of Washington Terrace and Harbor Boulevard. It borders a twoacre waterfront park. McLaren Engineering Group, in collaboration with RSC Architects, provided marine structural design, surveying, environmental permitting and aesthetic design for the concrete waterfront pier. The new Weehawken Recreation Pier has undergone rigorous testing to ensure its stability and longevity. McLaren is developing two other similar waterfront designs for Transmitter Park and Java Street in Brooklyn.

I KNOW A COOL, SECLUDED PLACE Cellar 335 in JC, Asian American Fusion with a Side of Polynesian Kitsch

By Sally Deering

T

he buzz on Newark Ave in Jersey City continues to be: when will White Eagle Hall open and when do the bands come on? Meanwhile, just a few steps beneath the White Eagle hall entrance, Cellar 335 has just opened and it’s a cool looking place. Cellar 335 is the newest addition to Jersey City’s downtown restaurant and bar scene, a cool new eatery designed in urban industrial décor and with a kitschy “let’s have fun” vibe. A darkly-lit Tiki bar stands out in the dark mysteriousness of the bar area as soon as you step in from outside. The bar flanks the left side of the bistro with roomy space between barstools and lots of space for standing and mingling. To the right, there’s an enclosed dining room – the type where you make an entrance – that offers dark

wood tables, a muted red background and overhanging lights that slide on wires above, so the lighting can change in an instant. Tables line the walls that are painted with murals by local artist Mustart. Another feast for the eyes is the moss wall, a living tapestry of colorful moss that grows off the brick. Placed in the center of the back of the room, it draws attention; and it’s a real showstopper. The dining room atmosphere is warm, and comfortable. On a recent Tuesday afternoon, as the waiters got ready for dinner service, they wore

Arnone who decided on an Asian American cuisine with a Polynesian twist served tapas-style: small dishes meant to be shared. More like a family-style concept, Arnone says. For starters, there’s Spicy Cornbread ($2 ea), Crabcakes ($5 ea.), Bao ($4 ea), Charred Edamane, Hummus, Tropical Salad, Hamachi Tartare, Tuna Roll, Crack Fries, and Chicken Wontons. ($8-$14)

Polynesian leis over their t-shirts in honor of “Tiki Tuesdays” a wink to the Polynesian-twist to the food and drinks concocted at the Tiki bar. General Manager Peter Arnone welcomes visitors to the dining room where the alert wait staff aims to give customers a night to remember. Eating at

Cellar 335 should be a total experience of the senses, Arnone says “We want all your senses to be played with,” Arnone says, smiling. “The art on the walls, the music you hear, the smell and taste of the food. We play with all your senses and we’re giving you a great experience.” Designing the menu was a team effort supervised by Chef/Owner Jamie Knott, and assisted by Chef de Cuisine Jared Bane, and

The bar staff make the syrups and freshlysqueezed juices, too. “We play with classics and make them our own,” Arnone says. Cellar 335’s dining room seats 85; the bar seats 15 and the restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday. It’s closed Sundays and Mondays because Arnone and his team set the bar high when it comes to consistency and they want to have just one wait staff, one bar staff and one kitchen staff running the show. Chef John Chomenko creates the most amazing desserts. Everything’s homemade like the Apple Hand Pies, the Zeppoles with Nutella cream;

All the desserts are $10 – and worth every penny, indeed! Cellar 335 just opened a couple weeks ago, but the buzz is great, Arnone says. “We’re appealing to everyone, from people in their 20s to their 70s,” Arnone says. “I love to be able to hit a broad spectrum.” Right next door to Cellar 335 is the new Madame Claude’s restaurant

“They’re legends in this neighborhood,” Arnone says. “We’re blessed to be on the other side of their door.” If you go Cellar 335 335 Newark Ave, JC (201) 222-1422 www.Cellar335.com
