reams can be interpreted as a means to a deeper understanding of our innermost thoughts, feelings and desires. When Jersey City artist Carlos DeMedeiros dreams, he interprets his dream as objects d’art. DeMedeiros’ dreaminspired works are whimsical, playful, and sometimes religious and political, and will be on view in the new exhibit CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: THE HIMSICAL WORLD OF CARLOS DEMEDEIROS opening Sat, Feb. 18 as part of Guttenberg Arts Center’s new gallery series. DeMedeiros, a self-taught artist and former Monk, takes found objects and deconstructs, then reconstructs them into unusual,

so that visitors can experience DeMedeiros’ “fabulous, unique and extremely creative thinking”. “All of my pieces are reflections of my experiences,” DeMedeiros says “I truly believe that art is a tonic for the human spirit. Twelve years ago, or so, I quit my job and went to a place that offered a studio for artists. I didn’t have much of a budget. I wondered, what can I do to use that studio space? Someone suggested found objects. One thing about found objects, they are connected to my daily life.” Brazilian-born and a former Monastic scholar, DeMedeiros lives in Jersey City and has participated in exhibitions at the New York Public Library, Art Students League of New York, the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, Bluffton University’s Grace Albrecht Gallery in Ohio, and the Outsider Art Fair in New York. “When I was in the monastery, Dominican priests’ days are divided by eight: eight hours to sleep and rest, eight hours to study, and eight hours of leisure,” DeMedeiros says. “My eight hours of leisure were

dedicated to doing ceramics and engaging with artisans. My circle of friends had become so much bigger than my church friends. I realized I wanted to engage with everybody.” CABINET OF CURIOSITIES is part of Guttenberg Arts new exhibition program that focuses on artists living and working in New Jersey. This new series takes place in two locations: the Guttenberg Arts Gallery in Guttenberg, and the Lake House at James J. Braddock Park in North Bergen. Barteluce and his Guttenberg Arts team see New Jersey as a hotbed of raw talent like artist Carlos DeMedeiros, he says. “Guttenberg Arts is excited to extend our exhibitions program to include shows by practicing artists working in New Jersey,” Barteluce says. “We are grateful to curators Meyken Barreto and Elvis Fuentes for connecting us with incredible artists like DeMedeiros.” As for DeMedeiros, he says he will always create art with an open heart and Cont’d on page 3

He’s been this way since he was a kid. “I was talking to my mother last night and she said something funny,” DeMedeiros says. “She said used to call me ‘Alice in Wonderland’ because it didn’t matter how difficult the situation, I was always seeing bright colors and things in a positive perspective. This has helped me to survive. I wish everybody had this mindset. There is always something good you can squeeze out of something bad. I apply this to the art I do.”

Galleria Hudson in JC celebrates Black History Month New Owners offer Framing, Photo-Printing & Venue for Artists middle of the night and begin painting the images I see in my dreams,” Wood once said. “I never quite know how the final work will turn out.” “Elmira’s paintings fuse dozens of colors to produce abstract scenes and figures in rural and small town settings typical of AfricanAmerican society,” Greenfield says. owntown Jersey City, on the corner where Jersey and Newark Avenues meet, Galleria Hudson frame shop just got a little more interesting. John and MaryJean Frohling and MaryJean’s son Henry Greenfield took over Galleria Hudson just a few months ago and made some changes. Along with framing services, and large-format photo-printing, Galleria Hudson now offers local artists a venue to show their work. February is Black History Month, and the Frohlings and Greenfield are spotlighting local photographer Mickey Mathis, a Jersey City resident who can be seen, camera in hand, strolling through local neighborhoods capturing light as it spills onto buildings, and freeze-framing moments in time. Mathis has been chronicling Jersey City’s neighborhoods for more than 20 years. He made his mark as a New York photographer taking pictures of celebrities and big events like the Ali-Frasier fight. “As a street photographer, you tune into the area you’re at,” Mathis says. “You have to get in there without someone saying ‘get out’. I allow the image to happen. I don’t push my images. At the decisive moment in time, it only exists that second.”

“I like the fact he’s not afraid to go to all out,” MaryJean Frohling says. “Looking at this beautiful winter scene, you realize he was standing in a snowstorm. But it was worth the shot.” “You can tell from his work, he’s been around Jersey City,” Greenfield adds. “He knows Jersey City. He showed me his portfolio and we chose which pictures we liked that showed a range of Jersey City, images that people are inclined to buy. The show’s only been up one week and we already sold one piece.” On view with Mathis’s work are paintings by the late E late Elmira Wood (1941-2013) an impressionist painter who captured scenes of country life – a man with a donkey, a girl playing among colorful

Her paintings have been compared to those of Grandma Moses, and like Moses, Wood discovered she had a passion for painting while in her 60s. It happened during a 3 am bout of insomnia. “I often wake up in the

ART MATTERS Cont’d from page 7 “She’s specific in describing something when it comes to color, style,” Greenfield says. “I grew up with that and its second nature to me. When it comes to framing, I can see whether the style of the frame fits the mood of the piece, I know how to pay attention to all the things happening in a piece of art.” The main framer, Jessica Tirado of Jersey City, has been at Gallerie Hudson for several years. Frohling says: “We like her very much. She does a great job.” The Frohlings and Greenfield say they feel very strongly about making Gallerie Hudson a venue for local artists to show their work. They want the

Latham House in Downtown JC serves American Fare with a Classy Twist The Supper Bell by the Bar keeps it all in the Family

hef Dan Latham grew up in Upstate New York and studied cooking at the Culinary Institute of America. He and his wife, Kris, a seasoned pastry chef are the proud owners of Latham House, a handsome restaurant on Marin Boulevard tucked inside the heart of Grove Street’s transportation hub in downtown Jersey City. Their partner is Mike Ryan, a busy and popular Jersey City restaurateur. Latham House stands out with a beautiful atmosphere of dark woods, white walls, and a long row of graymarbled tabletops for two that fill the center of the dining room. Beautiful roomy booths with greentufted banquettes to lean back on come with supersized windows offering nice views of downtown Jersey City. Off to the right near the kitchen, there’s a bar, and near the bar, there’s a Supper Bell that has an historic place in the Latham family scrapbook. ‘The bell came from my grandfather, it’s the supper bell,” Chef Dan says. “We ring it now and then. We have our own way of doing things.” Chef Dan has been a Jersey City resident since the

late 1980s and he and his wife, Kris, and their daughter live in The Heights. Kris is also the Latham House Pastry Chef and Hostess, running the front of the house, seating guests and making sure everyone’s happy. “The key to being great is consistency,” Chef Dan says. “I want you to come here every time and say that’s amazing. Consistency is extremely important.” Running a great restaurant is hard work and long hours, too. Before opening Latham House last July, Chef Dan spent 17 years as Chef for Cornelia Street Café in Greenwich Village. (That’s where he and Mike Ryan met and decided to partner up at Latham House.) “I get here at 9 am and leave at midnight,” Chef Dan says. “Kris and I take Sunday night and Monday off. You need to be dedicated. We push ourselves and we listen to our clientele.”

Chef Dan serves American Cuisine, and the menu has influences from his upbringing on the East Coast and Kris’s West Coast background “Its comfort food; big portions,” he says. Some of the signature dishes are the Cuban Reuben sandwich made with corned beef that’s been cooked for six hours and then smoked another six hours; and served with pickle, mayo/mustard, and

The bell had resided over 150 years in Upstate NY in a small town called Bath. The last 10 plus years, it was prominently displayed on our porch in The Heights of Jersey City. We now proudly hang “Bell” in our restaurant, Latham House. Welcome to Latham House.” “Kris and I are a husband and wife team,” Chef Dan says.

EXIT ON THE HUDSON REALTY “When you love what you do...It shows”

Joseph F. Damato Broker of Record

Presented by – Annette Rubin, 201-424-1182 Office – 201-437-0411 NEW OFFICE ADDRESS: 867 Broadway, Bayonne www.exitonthehudson.com

Toll Brothers City Living®, the urban development division of Toll Brothers, Inc., (NYSE:TOL), the nation’s leading builder of luxury homes, is proud to announce that 1400 Hudson Street, the 12-story Dewitt Tishman-designed building in Hoboken, N.J., has surpassed the 70% sold mark. The project, which opened its sales gallery in the spring of 2016, is poised for a swift sellout, drawing buyers from the local community and beyond. “1400 Hudson Street continues to receive a very strong response from buyers – and that response has gotten stronger now that we’ve sold out at our other Hoboken project, 1100 Maxwell Place,” said Henry L. Waller, Vice President for Toll Brothers City Living. Consisting of 236 residences, 1400 Hudson Street’s interior design, conceived

by interior designer Andres Escobar of Escobar Design by Lemay, was inspired by the former Lipton Tea factory in Hoboken and the area’s historically industrial past. The building offers studios to three-bedroom condominiums, all featuring open floor plans and wide plank oak flooring throughout. Modern kitchens offer quartz stone countertops, custom wood cabinets, as well as Bosch and Thermador appliances. Baths include custom vanities, large glass showers, Kohler fixtures and rich porcelain floors. Select homes offer private balconies. To read the entire article go to www.riverviewobserver.net
