Jersey City Theater Center explores IDENTIY in new Series Dance, Theater and Art Inspires Questions of Self in a Changing Culture -Cont’d from Cover

By Sally Deering “Before you can ask who are we, you must answer, who am I?” That’s the theme of the new show at the Jersey City Theater Center, IDENTITY, a six-week series of visual and performing arts that explores how people define themselves and their identities. The series, which opened Fri, Feb. 26 runs through Fri, May 13, and features theater and dance performances, play readings, films, and the Identity Art Exhibitions featuring more than 20 artists. Funded,, in part, by a grant from the Hudson County Department of Cultural Affairs, IDENTITY is the first offering of the JCTC’s 2016 season, and

terms of scale, Identity is offers presentations that the largest project JCTC explore themes like race, has so far undertaken.” ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and social expectations. Showcasing new voices inspired the series, JCTC Artistic Director Olga Levina said. “To really do a topic like ‘Identity’ justice, you need a range of perspectives,” Levina said. “We purposely sought out a diversity of distinct and talented voices to gain a better understanding of what identity truly means. We are giving equal opportunities to different artists, theater companies, performers and organizations to present their expression of identity. The programming we’ve selected deeply delves into the question of identity. In

rowing up in Jersey City, one of John Fagan’s favorite things to do was to make his friends laugh. While a student at Saint Peter’s Prep, he would often do impressions of his teachers that even fooled his classmates. These days, he still works the room for laughs but now he goes by the name Nutsy Fagan, his grandfather’s stage name when he worked Vaudeville. On a recent Saturday night, Catch a Rising Star, which books Nutsy (John) Fagan in clubs throughout the country, recently booked him as the opening act for Vincent Pastore and the Gangster Squad at the Masonic Lodge in Bayonne. In his act, Fagan talked about his dad who drank too much and the woes of working as a concierge in downtown Jersey City. “My dad worked for the employment and my mother worked for the unemployment,” Fagan says, on a break from his day job. “My dad’s dad was “Nutsy” Fagan, who played

I’m the school I used to do things,” Concierge Service Manager Fagan says. “I did a lot of for Equity Residentials in impressions, I did the

teachers, Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson.” When Fagan was doing stand-up back in the 1990s, he had to deal with a life issue tougher than any heckler in the audience. In 1990, he discovered a tumor in his jaw, underwent surgery and after healing, considered doing stand-up again, but felt self-conscious, he says. In 1994, after he decided to stop drinking, he attended a talent show. His friends encouraged him to get up on stage and compete and he did. “I wound up winning the show,” Fagan says. “People said to me, you need to get back into comedy.” Able to work off a crowd and improvise, Fagan says he looks up to great comics like the late Richard Pryor. “Nobody even comes close to him,” Fagan says. “Pryor was just funny, period. I also like George Carlin, Robert Klein, and Robin Williams. One of my favorites, I love Groucho.” Performing as the opening act for Vincent Pastore and the Gangster Squad last week, Fagan told stories that some might think were politically incorrect. “There is nothing sacred in comedy,” Fagan says. “People want something

they can identify with, what they can relate to, like the big Irish Catholic family, the crazy uncle. They have it in their families. If you’re telling a story and they laugh that’s what you use on stage. Funny is funny.” Fagan spent some time working with an improve troupe made up of stand-up comics called “Men Avoiding Work.” He says thatwhen you get up on stage, you don’t necessarily have to tell jokes. He says: “It’s about making fun of everyday things that everyone can relate to.” Fagan enjoys watching and learning from other comics like Ellen DeGeneres, Joan Rivers, Louis C.K, because he knows how hard it is to get up on stage by yourself and make people laugh. “I think it’s the hardest form of comedy because you’re by yourself,” Fagan says. “There are guys in a bar who are the funniest guys in the world, but can’t get up on stage.” To book Nutsy (John) Fagan, contact Suzy at www.CatchaRisingStar.com. a dramedy following an elderly man who suddenly sees the world and his true self in a new light. The Writers Theatre of New Jersey which focuses on women’s identity issues will showcase four nights of play readings beginning March 5 that will include ENDS OF THE EARTH by Lea Romeo about a couple going through a marriage crisis. On Mar. 12, J’Wante will present “Yass, I’m Cumming,” a multimedia one man show he wrote. On Mar. 26 and April 2, THAT DISGUSTING THING CALLED INTIMACY will take audiences on a “unique, controversial and provocative exploration of gender, political power structures, sexuality and pop culture.”

(Curator Lucy Rovetto)

“The work in this show is powerful because it prompts viewers to question what goes into forming their own identity,” Lucy Rovetto, Curator of the Identity Art Show, said. “There is an innate conflict between who we think we are, and who society either wants us to be or wants to define us as being. Conflict also arises from the tension between the person we are and the person we think should be.” Rovetto told the audience that when she put the call out to artists to send in their work to be considered for the show, she was impressed by the amount of feeling and emotion exhibited in the work. Jenny Brovar, whose photograph “How Elegance

Erodes” was taken in front of a beautiful old red building said she discovered something about her identity by doing a self-portrait. “This photograph, I thought of it as my identity,” Brovar said. “Identity can include a lot of things. I was happy to see people took the theme and went with a real serious intention to convey identity.” If you go Through May 13 IDENTITY Jersey City Theater Center Merseles Studios 339 Newark Ave, JC (201) 795 5385 www.jctcenter.org

I LOVE YOU, BUT YOU MAKE ME COMPLETELY CRAZY explores the depths and idiosyncrasies of human connection and isolation. This exhibition exposes two sides of a marriage to examine how the personal, domestic life, with all its wavering heights of bliss and depths of despair, intersects with the studio life in its own unpredictable roller coaster. Gingrow and Scoggins have been partnered since 2005 and in that time have always maintained very separate practices. This exhibition brings together two bodies of work that, though created in the private space of each partner’s respective heart, head, and studio, demonstrate the paths we all walk seemingly alone, but never without the influence of the lives around us, for better or for worse.”

Gilbert Gottfried to Perform at NJPAC

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) located at 1 Center Street in Newark, New Jersey presents Gilbert Gottfried. Gilbert Gottfried, the outspoken comedian known equally for voicing animated kids’ characters and for testing the boundaries of good taste, presents an evening of standup featuring his signature brand of irreverent, foul-mouthed hilarity on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 8PM. Outspoken, outrageous and occasionally offensive, Gilbert Gottfried has been beloved as a “comedian’s comedian” for more than 30 years. Gottfried is known for his squinty, shouting comedic persona and for lending his unmistakable voice to a host of animated characters, including the parrot Iago in Disney’s Aladdin. His standup routine is not for the kids, though: Gottfried’s irreverent humor tests the boundaries of good taste, and he delivers what just might be the world’s

dirtiest jokes. (For a hint of what to expect, Google “Gilbert Gottfried Aristocrats joke.”) Gottfried is the author of Rubber Balls and Liquor, a mix of memoir and

observational humor, and host of Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast. To read more about Gilbert Gottfied and other Celebrities visit www.riverviewobserver.net

Nowhere on earth does a chef flip a burger while seasoning a poached salmon. Diners are known for their staples and specials. If you want a good salad bar, you go to Coach House; for delicious Greek Baklava, it’s the River View; the Malibu has terrific tuna and egg salads; 4-Star Diner has yummy Fish & Chips; and for a Diner with a deli counter and Italian specialties on the menu, it’s Broadway Diner & Bistro in Bayonne. Owners Rocky and Janet Coviello and their partner, Chef Scott Smith, offer their customers a traditional menu of Diner staples and then take it up a notch with authentic Italian, and Nouveau dishes added to the mix. Smack dab in the middle of the Diner, there’s an Italian deli where you can purchase Italian entrees and sandwiches to take back home. The deli is so popular, in order to keep up, they have to make fresh mozzarella three times a day. The menu features Baked Pasta Dishes, Deep Dish Pizzas baked in a Brick Oven, Fresh Deli Sandwiches, Burgers, and a Breakfast Menu featuring Waffles, French toast and

Lobster Ravioli and Breakfast Sandwiches. Signature dishes include the Chicken Cutlet with Mozzarella and Hot Peppers sandwich, that’s a big sell, Chef Smith says. So is the Prime Rib Sandwich with Mozzarella and Hot Peppers. And every day Broadway Diner & Bistro has some tasty specials like the Lobster Rolls, Crabcakes and Mac ‘n’ Cheese served on Fridays. Fresh seafood is key, Chef Smith says, especially for dishes like Grilled Salmon with Black Bean and Avocado Salsa. “I wake up at 3:30 in the morning and go to the fish market in Hunts Point, The Bronx,” Chef Smith says. “The scallops we serve, you can eat them raw. Everything’s fresh.” There’s an “All You Can Eat Italian Buffet” ever Sunday between 3 and 9 pm that features authentic homemade Italian delicacies for a traditional Sunday dinner. And if the Broadway Diner & Bistro feels familiar it may be you’ve dined at Chef Smith and Rocky and Janet Coviello’s other eateries in Bayonne, Summit and Red Bank. All four restaurants have the same high

standards: good food, fresh ingredients, and affordable prices – with a versatile chef who makes sure only the best goes on the customer’s plate.

“Along with the Italian specialties, we make the best pancakes, so on weekends we sell lots of pancakes, and dishes like French toast stuffed with Nutella, served with raspberries,” Chef Smith says. “We also make our own desserts like our fresh cupcakes. And we make an excellent cheesecake.” If you go Broadway Diner & Bistro 226 Broadway, Bayonne (201) 455-8239 www.broadwaybistrobayonne.com Hours: 6 am to 11 pm, 7 days a week

“Reveal” A Multimedia Group Exhibition hob’art co-operative gallery

This exhibition showcases recent work by hob’art members Adele Pedulla, Donna O’Grady, Miriam Untoria, Ibou Ndoye, and Liz Cohen. Their artwork will be in a variety of mediums, including photography, digital collage, acrylic & oil paint, and pastel. Each of these exhibiting artists draws inspiration from their environment, bringing light to the shared collective. Rendering off-kilter, shifting compositions of light, color, form, movement, and texture, Ibou Ndoye’s paintings speak a universal language that empowers viewers to unearth and embrace their own experiences. His reverse glass paintings (a technique he perfected in his home country, Senegal) and his

found art pieces evoke his love of street life both here and in Africa.

Liz Cohen, “Alphabet Carpet,” 2015 Liz Cohen draws inspiration from cultures she has visited in her world travels. She combines her ideas while channeling her love for textures, fabric, and three dimensional form through her paintings and sculptures. Donna O’Grady is exhibiting new bold, layered and textured paintings that incorporate antique tile with her

original compositions. Continuing her s series of surreal paintings, Miriam Untoria utilizes her considerable skill and technique with acrylics to create evocative and moving images. Her paintings will excite and activate memories and a sense of nostalgia for all viewers. Adele Pedulla expresses herself through photography. She produces images that are mysterious, deep and thoughtprovoking. Puzzling enigmas appear in the juxtaposition of shapes and colors in her photos. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 5, from 6 to 8pm. On Sunday, March 20, at 3:30pm, the artists will discuss their work and will
