Then I started getting into Indie comics like “Love and Rockets” and “Ranma ½” by Manga artist Rumiko Takahashi. RUNAWAY DOLLS AND A COOL JAPAN GUIDE Meet Cartoonist, Writer, and Dessert Blogger Abby Denson

By Sally Deering

Imagine a place called

Dolltopia where renegade dolls change the world. That scenario is lifted from the plot of “Dolltopia” (Green Candy Press; paperback) one of several graphic novels by cartoonist, writer and dessert blogger Abby Denson. The author of “Tough Love; High School Confidential” (Northwest Press; paperback) about a teenage boy coming out in high school; and the non-fiction work “Cool Japan Guide” (Tuttle Publishing, Paperback) on how to get around Japan, Denson earned a

Cartoonist, Writer and Dessert Blogger Abby Denson BFA from the Parsons School of Design in New York. She has written for the “Amazing Spider-Man Family”, “Josie and the Pussycats”, “The

Powerpuff Girls”, “The Simpsons”, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” Disney Adventures, and Nickelodeon Magazine. Recently, Denson made an appearance at the Washington LIVE! Festival in Union City; and she will be at New York’s Comic Con in October. RVO: Can you tell our readers how you got interested in cartooning? AD: It started in elementary school. My friends and I would pass notes to each other and we would draw little comic books about day-to-day life in school. I had a younger brother and he and I would buy comic

AD: Writing for the format was a lot like working on a screenplay. The story comes first. Then the artist draws it. Interestingly when I was working on “Archie” they asked me to do some sketches; the artist followed a little pencil drawing I did. RVO: How did you get into cartooning and writing long-form comic books? AD: “Tough Love” was my first official book, I did that in 1996, I made a minicomic and self-published. XY, a magazine for young gay kids ran it in serial form. “Tough Love” is about a teenage boy coming out in high school.

RECESS FOR GROWN-UPS

It took 89 days from demo –to-reno and HopsScotch opened July 2012.

At HopsScotch Bar & Restaurant, It’s all about Food, Drink & Games By Sally Deering Luke Gomez, who owns HopsScotch bar and restaurant in Jersey City with his wife Sarah, compares running a restaurant to coaching a sports team. Every member of his staff participates – no benchwarmers – and when the place fills up with hungry patrons, it’s a huge win for the team. ‘You have to have your staff work well together, like a basketball team,” Gomez says. “The Line Cook is the Center. The

Bartender is Point Guard. Servers are Guards. My management is my Assistant Coaches. And we don’t say we have guests. We have fans. Before the shift starts, I tell my staff we have a big game tonight and it’s not what’s on TV.” Gomez’s sports’ analogies come from years of coaching basketball and working as a Scout. He melded those experiences with his 20 years in the restaurant business and his passion to open his own

place. To find a bistro as big as HopsScotch is pretty rare these days. There’s the front dining room with a long bar alongside one wall and two levels of tables and chairs, and flatscreen TVs

wherever your eyes land. If TV’s not your style, you can always go to the niche by the door and play darts. In the back, one side holds an area with booths and the other features a party room. Not many restaurateurs can say they built their restaurant with their bare hands. That’s not the case with Gomez. He and his dad, Larry Gomez gutted the former Uno’s Pizzeria and created the restaurant to exactly what Luke Gomez wanted: a place where people come back again and again for the delicious food and wide selection of single malt scotch and craft beers straight from the tap.

“We offer quality not quantity,” Gomez says. “We offer better liquor and better food. You’re not getting run of the mill French fries here, you’re getting pomme frittes. The quality comes from our chef Nick McCoy. He’s been on the ‘Today’ show and ‘Good Morning America’. He’s a genius. On the menu, we have a Smoked Chicken Cont’d on page 4

Gomez named his bistro HopsScotch for the playfulness of his pub and for the large amount of craft brews and single malt scotch he offers his customers. Twenty taps on the brick wall behind the bar spout frothy brews right from the line. They are categorized on the HopsScotch menu according to Hoppy, Toasted & Nutty, Crisp & Bright, and Strange & Boozy. Craft beers are known for their mix of flavors and crazy names and on a recent visit, the offerings included Ballast Point Dead Ringer Oktoberfest, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout and Forgotten Boardwalk Funnel Cake. RVO: Your book Dolltopia won a Bronze International Manga Award, and the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award. What is Dolltopia about? AD: It’s about a ballerina doll that comes off the factory line, gets purchased by a girl and becomes under her control. The girl makes her play house with a male doll, but she’s not happy. She says I’m sick of this, I’m sick of you, and she runs away. She meets up with a soldier doll; they are both running away from their pre-ordained roles. They find Dolltopia a city of renegade dolls. RVO: Can you tell us about your new book “Cool Japan Guide”? AD: It’s the culmination of a very long interest in Japan. While I was in school, I went to Sophia University in Tokyo which has a summer session. From 2010 to now I’ve gone almost every year. I visit and have friends there. I had my honeymoon there. I made

That led me to “Cool Japan Guide”. It’s my first color and non-fiction book. RVO: Can you share a couple of tips from the Cool Japan Guide? AD: it’s important to do certain things before you go to Japan. If you‘re going to travel outside Tokyo, you’ll want to purchase a Japan Rail Pass. You need to order it before you leave America. You have to go to a travel agency for a Japan Rail pass. Then you bring the voucher to the agent in Japan, show your Passport and they’ll give you the rail pass. It’s an “all you can ride “pass. It can be quite expensive but with the pass it’s cheaper. Another tip: The Ghibli Museum (www.ghibli-museum.jp/ en/) is a very famous animation studio, the equivalent of Disney. They have a museum, but you have to prebuy the tickets before you go to Japan. They are the hottest tickets. RVO: And you also write a

Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) opens Doors Hundreds of Artists to present their Works Cont’d from Cover artists. ICP AT MANA CONTEMPORARY, 818 Newark Ave, JC, (201) 604-2702, www.manacontemporary. com. Oct 18-Dec 30: DAVID LEVINTHAL: PIN-UPS. “For the final chapter of a three-part exhibition of the work of David Levinthal, the photographer reveals his latest portraits of pin-up dolls, continuing his study of toys as representations of American fantasies and realities. David Levinthal’s Pin-Ups series, 2014, is an homage to the work of iconic artists such as Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren,

and George Petty, among others who glamorized the aesthetic of the so-called “idealized woman” of the 40’s and 50’s. Plastered on the foot lockers and barracks of American servicemen during World War II, such classic depictions of the “Girl Next Door” have provided escapist fantasies ever since.”
