THE EYES HAVE IT

Mickey Mathis: WORLD TRADE VIEWS at HCCC; Exhibit & Artist Talk Bring Your Camera to Mathis’s Photo Workshop on Library Rooftop By Sally Deering “The Decisive Moment” is a term coined by worldfamous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose black & white photographs that captured life’s special moments are as historic as the Eiffel Tower. (“There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment” Cartier-Bresson wrote). Jersey City has a Cartier-Bresson of its own, photographer Mickey Mathis who has chronicled the city’s neighborhoods as a street photographer, snapping decisive moments as they occur in real time. Mathis’s 20 year-coverage of the World Trade Center is the central theme for his new exhibit

The World Trade Center is Mathis’s way of educating people about history through photographs, he says WORLD TRADE VIEWS is just a part of Jersey City history that Mathis has chronicled through his camera lens He has photographed practically every neighborhood and recently, Mathis was hanging in Journal Square taking pictures of the architecture. He uses a Canon 5-D camera; but never a flash. “Old school”, Mathis doesn’t need expensive equipment to capture a decisive moment, he says. Cont’d on page 3

MICKEY MATHIS: WORLD TRADE VIEWS now showing at Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery on the 6th floor of Hudson County Community College’s library building in Journal Square. MICKEY MATHIS: WORLD

TRADE VIEWS features images of the Twin Towers and the new Freedom Tower taken by Mathis from this side of the Hudson. The show is free, open to the public and runs through Sept. 30. If you’d like to meet Mathis, the photographer will be holding an Artist’s Talk on Tues, Sept. 20 at 12 noon at his exhibit; and at 6 pm that same day, for a $20 ticket, budding photographers can take a 1-1/2 hour photography workshop with Mathis on the roof terrace of the Library building. (Bring your camera!) “I went downtown to photograph,” Mathis says about the days following Page 2-September 15-September 30, 2016 River View Observer

THE EYES HAVE IT Cont’d from page 2 “Feeling and seeing are the two aspects of good photography,” Mathis says. “The documentation is a prime objective. I love to see cities changing. I got Jersey City from the late 1980s through the early 1990s.” Born in New York City, Mathis grew up in Livingston, New York (near Woodstock) where he taught himself how to use a camera. He has worked as a studio photographer and snapped many celebrities and politicians. He shot the Ali-Frasier fight from the front row. Back when he was using a 35mm camera, Mathis would shoot something in New York City and bring the film to the Daily News’ photo editor who would process it and look at what Mathis shot.

“I would see a story, and they would buy it,” Mathis says. “If they didn’t buy it, at least you got your film processed for free.” His early influence, he says, was LIFE magazine that depicted large format photos in black & white, and photojournalists like Bruce Davidson and Gordon Parks. . “As a street photographer, you tune into the area you’re at,” Mathis says, sitting near a water fountain in Journal Square with his Canon around his neck “You have to get in there without someone saying ‘get out’. I allow it to happen. I don’t want to push my images. At the decisive moment in time, it only .

2016 Fall Arts & Music Festival, Sun, Sept. 25 Spyro Gyra Headlines; 300 Artists, Artisans & Food Vendors; Performances all Day Don’t toss your sandals to the back of the closet just yet. Hoboken’s 2016 Fall Arts & Music Festival is coming up on Sun, Sept. 25 from 11 am to 6 pm, and this year’s headliner Sypro Gyra will perform live on stage along with lots of local bands and entertainers. “We are so excited to have Spyro Gyra perform the festival this year for the first time, “Director of Hoboken’s Cultural Arts department, Geri Fallo says. “Julio Fernandez, the guitar player for Spyro Gyra is a Hoboken native and got his musical start in Hoboken. Julio has played multiple venues in Hoboken over the years with his

local musician friends, but never with Spyro Gyra, so it will be quite a treat.” The day-long festival – a farewell to summer and hello to fall – will have 300 artists, crafters, entertainers and food vendors sprawling along Washington Street from Observer Highway to 7th Street with three stages of entertainment including a 3rd Street stage strictly for kids’ entertainment. “We are also excited to have The Amazing Incredibles perform,” Fallo says. “They used to perform at the festival in the early years of its inception and then the band broke up due to band members moving. This will be a reunion performance for them. We are

excited to have them share their talent with our audience once again” There’s always lots of great artwork at the festival, Fallo says, and lots of local businesses will be on hand, some that are new start-ups. To go with the music and art, there will be a vast array of multicultural foods for sale including Thai, Indian, Greek, French, Mexican, Cajun and Italian. “There is always an eclectic variety of tasty delights from food vendors and local restaurants,” Fallo says. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AT THE 2016 FALL HOBOKEN ART & MUSIC FESTIVAL

Fine artists will be located between 2nd & 3rd Streets and 5th & 6th Streets, and artists from the Monroe Center for the Arts will be between First & Newark Streets, so if you are an art collector, these are the locations you will want to explore. Oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, mixed media, and photography will all be on display. Children’s activities on 3rd street will feature rides, games, creative activities, face painting, sand art, balloons, and live performances. Crafters will display and sell handmade: pottery, metalwork, wood items, furniture, blown & fused

glass, quilts, household items made from recycled materials, batik clothing, hand-painted furniture, candles, jewelry, dried florals, soaps & lotions and other unique handcrafted items. Food will be sold throughout the fair. Hoboken restaurants will set up street cafes offering an eclectic variety of international foods. Spyro Gyra celebrated its 40th year in 2014 with shows that showcased their breakthrough MORNING DANCE album. After that year of looking back, they decided to spend 2015 concentrating on their more recent material, playing songs from their post 2000 releases. The audience reaction was so positive to their recent material that bandleader Jay Beckenstein decided that their albums from that period deserved a little more focus. So, in order to spotlight this innovative and productive period, Spyro Gyra is releasing “THE BEST OF THE HEADS UP YEARS” this spring. “My hope is that our music has the same effect on the audience that it does on me,” says group leader Jay Beckenstein. “I’ve always felt that music, and particularly instrumental music, has this non-literal quality that lets people travel to a place where there are no words. I would hope that when people hear our music or come to see us, they’re able to share that with us.”

Fogarty (vocals, guitar and spoons). Their music runs the gamut from countryswing to blues to New Orleans jazz to acoustic R&B, and they’re quite effective at blending those styles seamlessly. Swingadelic is a great “little big band” that delivers the traditional big band and Great American Songbook music of Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack era and comes up with the most listenable and danceable music. Their repertoire includes everything from Motown, the Rolling Stones, and oldies and dance hits from the 1950s to the 1980s. Their newest release, TOUSSAINTVILLE on ZOHO records is a tribute to legendary New Orleans songwriter, piano player and producer Allen Toussaint with hits from the 1950s through 1970s. The Amazing Incredibles are a fun-loving, energetic acoustic quartet based in Hoboken featuring John Kurgan (guitar), Dave Post (stand-up bass), Adam Krass (violin) and Eddie

Zydeco Revelators are Hoboken’s own spicy Louisiana-style Zydeco dance band – sure to make any crowd groove and smile. Cajun accordion, slammin’ R & B rhythms and pure adrenaline fun. 3rd Street Stage – Children’s area Noon – Garden Street School Band 1:00 pm – Jason Didner & the Jungle Gym Jam 2:00 pm – Jason Didner & the Jungle Gym Jam 3:00 pm – Preschool of Rock 4:00 pm – Chrissy Roberts Preschool of Rock has redefined children’s music by combining entertainment and education through

exhilarating performance, offering classes, shows, preschool enrichments and birthday parties throughout New Jersey and New York. They provide the hippest music education for young children, inspiring creativity, confidence, and freedom of expression.

Jason Didner & the Jungle Gym Jam is an award-winning band that brings a true rock-n-roll spirit to songs that emphasize kindness, active play, imagination and love of learning. The band’s debut album EVERYONE’S INVITED! was honored with the Parents’ Choice® Approved seal & named CD Baby Editor’s Pick as it entered the online music retailer’s top 10 kids/family album charts. Based out of Montclair, the band has been compared to “Elvis Costello in a particularly good mood.” The band performs a lively & interactive concert with lots of call-and-response, and opportunities for young audience members to portraythe characters in the songs using the puppets the group provides.

Their only contact to the outside world comes through screens, with content produced by The Network. Recognizable media-manipulation tactics prevail: fear of ‘the other’, violence, and propaganda presented as reasonable safety-measures. With these themes, Khoshbin directly confronts the issues of political ideology and celebrity-obsessed media. When we meet her, Layla has created a powerful anti-war video, which has become too popular for her own good. The Network comes knocking.”

Esperanza Cortés, Sky Kim, Paula Overbay and Gilda Pervin, curated by Arthur Bruso and Raymond E. Mingst. ‘The original program from the first performance of Martha Graham’s Errand into the Maze in 1947 notes: ‘The action has its core in that errand-journey into the maze of the heart in order to face and do battle with the Creature of Fear. There is the accomplishment of the errand, the instant of triumph, the emergence from the dark.’ Graham’s dance serves as inspiration and a departure point to consider the work of these four visual artists. For our exhibition, pattern, rhythm, and repetition are engaged as a means to access, express and explore a range of intentions. Just as Martha Graham reimagined Ariadne course the maze and emerge from the dark, the artists assembled here each chart their own path towards discovery.”

oe and Chris Schiavo may be new to Hoboken, but they’re not new to the restaurant biz. The successful father & son team own The Shepherd & The Knucklehead craft beer bar and steakhouse in Haledon and it’s so successful, they branched out here in Hudson.

They just opened “The Shep” a little more than a week ago on Willow Avenue between 13 & 14 Streets. A huge space – it seats 125 – with 23 flatscreen TVs all turned to a sports channel lining the walls. The bar is long with 60 taps and a flatscreen above that has the latest crafts available. Cocktails are crafty, too, Joe Schiavo says, because the bartenders squeeze fresh juices and make all the syrups from scratch. Joe Schiavo describes The Shep as a craft beer bar that loves sports. “I play sports,” Joe Schiavo, 25, says, “baseball, basketball, and flag football.”

On a recent Wednesday, baseball and sports talk shows filled every screen and a steady flow of customers sailed through the front doors. Word is out— there’s a new pub in the neighborhood. Even Mayor Dawn Zimmer stopped in to welcome them to the Mile Square City. “We’ve been wanting to come to Hoboken for three-to-four years now,” Joe says. “It has a dense population of young urban professionals who appreciate quality food, beer, and experience. We’re in a great neighborhood.” Chef Alejandro Urena executes the menu

Joe Schiavo designed by Joe and Chris Schiavo. It features hearty bar food and entrees; with an emphasis on meat dishes like the 24-ounce Porterhouse Steak and the Pork Poutine, a Canadian style dish featuring braised pork

shoulder with cheddar and mozzarella over French fries or nachos. Starters & Bar Bites; Burgers, Sliders & Sandwiches; Entrée Salads Tacos, Quesadillas, and Wraps; and Entrees – the menu has a lot to choose from. Starting with Starts & Bar Bites, there’s Knucklehead Wings served either Buffalo style or Asian style ($$6.95 for 6; $12.95 for 12); a Giant German Pretzel with house-made mustard dipping sauce ($8.95); Beer Mussels; Spicy Honey-Glazed Kielbasa; Mozzarella Wedges Jalapeno Poppers, and Cheese by the cup ($6.95)

Cheese by the cup ($6.95) and bowl ($8.95). Entrée salads include the Chicken Caesar, Mediterranean, Ahi Tuna and the Black & Blue with blackened skirt steak and crumbled blue cheese over mixed greens ($9.95$17.95). Burgers, Sliders & Sandwiches feature the Angus Sliders, Grilled Chicken Sliders, BBQ Pork Sliders; and Half-Pound Angus Burgers like the Shep Classic, BBQ Burger, Mushroom & Swiss, Buffalo Burger, Veggie Burger and the Breakfast Burger which is Bacon and and cheddar, topped with a Cont’d on page 17

THE SHEPHERD & THE KNUCKLEHEAD Cont’d from page 16 fried egg are popular choices ($10.95-$12.95). Tacos, Quesadillas, and Wraps include the Chorizo Street Tacos, Poutine Tacos, Veggie Tacos, and Ahi Tuna Tacos ($1095-$13.95). And the quesadillas are Cheese, Chicken, Beef, Slicked NY Strip Steak and Bacon & Cheese ($9.95-$12.95). There are Steaks and Pastas, too, like a Pesto ala Shep, linguine tossed with house-made pesto sauce ($11.95) and the 12-ounce USDA Prime NY Strip ($35.95). There are seafood dishes and sides, too! The Schiavos feel a certain commitment to the neighborhood, already, Joe Schiavo says. Since they opened their first pub in 1998, The Shepherd and The Knucklehead has been “redistributing profits to help clothe, feed, and house the poor, both locally and abroad.” According to the website, the Schiavos fed 231 Ethiopian families, purchased an ambulance for a German Lutheran missionary, and provide ongoing support for the Father McGhee food pantry in Paterson. “Giving back is important,” Joe says “We’re blessed to be in this position. How can you not give back?” And although they’re the “new kid on the block” the Schiavos already feel a connection to Hoboken “The people at City Hall, the Police, and Hoboken Councilmen have gone out

of their way to welcome us,” Joe says. “And I like the people that are coming in.” If you go The Shepherd & The Knucklehead 1313 Washington St, HOB (210) 714-4222 www.shepjc.com Hours: Mon-Thurs, 3 pm-2 am Fri, 3 pm-3 am Sat, 11 am-3 am Sun, 11 am-2 am
