JERSEY CITY MAYOR FULOP, CARDINAL TOBIN & CATHOLIC CHARITIES DEBUT NEW ST. LUCY’S COMPLEXPROVIDING PERMANENT SOLUTIONS, AFFORDABLE HOUSING & DYNAMIC SUPPORT SERVICES TO EFFECT CHANGE

Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, joined partners Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, Arc Building Partners, Claremont Development, City Council members, and Jersey City residents for the official opening of the St. Lucy’s Complex, a brand-new 60,000 square foot facility providing a continuum of housing and supportive services that go above and beyond for individuals experiencing homelessness in the community.

The Grove Street facility recently opened after two years of construction to

build multiple affordable housing solutions along with emergency shelter, transitional housing, and comprehensive supportive services. Previously, Catholic Charities provided housing services across the street from this location. This building will allow for an expansion of housing options to help the community.

“There is no one-sizefits-all solution to homelessness. That is why we are creating a holistic approach with the new St. Lucy’s campus to provide emergency food and shelter, and we are now taking it a step further with more permanent actions that help break the cycle

and set residents on a stable path to becoming productive citizens,” said Mayor Fulop. “Today, we are opening the doors to countless opportunities for residents who need it most. I have no doubt St. Lucy’s will continue its long-standing success as a critical community asset. As we welcome the residents, I want each of them to know they have our full support as they take these first steps towards a renewed future for themselves and their families.”

The newly expanded St. Lucy’s campus features:

Shelter Space – 150 beds for homeless individuals.

Transitional Housing – 14 residential units for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

Permanent Family Housing – Five 3-bedroom permanent supportive housing units for families.

Permanent Studio

Apartments - 15 permanent affordable housing studios.

Daily Drop-in Area –Available to nonresidents needing a meal, shower, or laundry.

On-site Programs –Catholic Charities will provide comprehensive case management services to help individuals find permanent housing, employment,

and assistance with physical/mental health, substance use issues, and more.

“I am humbled to be a part of this vital effort,” said Cardinal Tobin. “Projects like this are essential to help the poor, vulnerable, and those most in need. The crucial work of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark and this St. Lucy’s Complex are tangible examples of following our Catholic faith’s tenets to respect each person’s life and dignity. Lives will be saved, and hope will be rekindled.”

As a long-established 24/7 emergency shelter, St. Lucy’s devotion to helping the homeless serves as the foundation of this expansion to provide Jersey City’s neediest residents and families with a more promising future. Located between 15th and 16th Streets, the new Complex is the former site of St. Jude’s Oasis, a Catholic Charities housing program that has been incorporated into the new site.

Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) Coordinator Jackie Farber said, “The Bayonne UEZ promotes shopping, working, and doing business in Bayonne throughout the year. We appreciate News 12’s support for Bayonne’s small business community.”

The local businesses featured on News 12 included Dance With Me, Café Bello, the Broadway Diner/Chandelier, Pompei Pizza, Titan Tactical (clothing and gear), the 22nd Street Meat Market, VJC’s Boutique, and Winners (off-track betting).

Walter Parks and The Unlawful Assembly featuring Ada Dyer and Steven Williams

Swamp blues guitarist

Walter Parks and drummer producer Steven Williams unite as The Unlawful Assembly to take a modern look at historic southern U.S. spirituals, hollers, reels and work songs all of which are prefaced with relevant stories. This inspiring and rare performance celebrates the return of vocalist Ada Dyer, who’s on a very short pause from touring worldwide with Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band. Parks was the longtime sideman to Woodstock legend Richie Havens. Williams played with Sade and Digable Planets.

If You Go: Barrow Mansion

Tracy Jones is a touching comedy of individual connection in an increasingly busy world. The main character, Tracy Jones, rents out the back “party room” of Jones Street Bar and Grill: The Place for Wings and Things to throw a party to which she’s invited every woman in the area who is also named Tracy Jones. Tracy sits for over an hour alone, nursing her Diet Coke, waiting for any other Tracy Joneses to show up, and help alleviate her epic loneliness. Through her encounters with the limited guests that attend, this hilarious play challenges the audience to question loneliness, connection, and why we do the things we do. Tickets for Tracy Jones are now available on www.arthouseproductions.org.

Bob Mould, Oct. 8, White Eagle Hall, Jersey City

When Bob Mould emerged from the Minneapolis/St. Paul punk scene fronting the trailblazing band Hüsker Dü in the early ‘80s, it was at a time when conservatism in the form of the Reagan era and the Moral Majority

was driving policies that targeted the disenfranchised.

It’s something Mould clearly felt as a selfdescribed “22-year-old closeted gay man.” Fast forward to more recent times, and the New York native felt the current climate was not dissimilar thanks to “...a charismatic, telegenic, say-anything leader being propped up by evangelicals.”

It was a situation that provoked Mould to write “American Crisis,” which appears on “Blue Hearts,” his latest studio album. The song is a blistering diatribe that opens with the line, “I never thought I’d see this b****** again/To come of age in the ‘80s was bad enough/We were marginalized and demonized/I watched a lot of my generation die/ Welcome back to the American crisis.”

“‘American Crisis’ was a song I recorded in Germany that was a really harsh, sort of political/social type of song that didn’t fit with the theme of “Sunshine Rock,” he explained in a phone interview, mentioning his 2018 album. “So I held onto it, and as 2019 went on, when I wasn’t on the road, I lost my time in Berlin. I was a little bit divorced from the politics of America, but once I got back to San Francisco towards the end of 2019 and was writing all music and lyrics for “Blue Hearts,”

I was pretty enraged and furious at the state of America. There are a lot of callbacks to the early ‘80s, the discovery of HIV/AIDS and marginalized communities, which I was a part of.”

As if touring behind a current album weren’t enough, Mould also released “Distortion: 1989-2019,” a mammoth 24-CD box set that is an exhaustive compilation of the 62-year-old rocker’s solo work.

Now that he’s back on the road, Mould is mainly playing solo as he continues the “‘Distortion’and ‘Blue Hearts’tour. Fans can expect him to deliver a grab-bag of material from his previous bands, Hüsker Dü and Sugar, and from solo catalog. “I think it’s going to be a really solid look back from ‘Workbook’ (his 1989 debut solo album) through ‘Sunshine Rock,’” he said. “The Hüsker stuff—there’s always a clutch of those songs I like to play every night. I think it’s going to be a real wellrounded show.”
