European Union adopts legislation to reduce CO2 emissions from vans
V
ans account for around 12% of the European Union vehicle parc for light-duty vehicles and as part of the strategy to reduce their CO2 emissions, certain targets have been adopted between now and 2020. By 2017, van regulations will limit CO2 for new vans to a fleet average of 175 grams of CO2 per kilometre – with the target phased in from 2014 and to reach 147g/km by 2020. These targets represent reductions of 3% and 19% respectively compared with the 2012 average of 180.2 g CO2 km. Relating that to fuel consumption, the 2017 target is approximately equivalent to 6.6L/100 km of diesel, while the 2020 target equates approximately to 5.5 L/100 km of diesel. Emission limits are set according to the mass of vehicle, using a limit value curve. The curve

is set in such a way that a fleet average of 175 grams of CO2 per kilometre is achieved by 2017 and 147 grams of CO2 per kilometre by 2020. The limit value curve means that heavier vans are allowed higher emissions than lighter vans while preserving the overall fleet average. Only the manufacturer’s fleet average is regulated, so manufacturers are still able to make vans with
The EU fleet average target of 175 grams of CO 2/km will be phased in between 2014 and 2017. In 2014 an average of 70% of each manufacturer’s newly registered vans must comply with the limit value curve set by the legislation. This proportion will rise to 75% in 2015, 80% in 2016, and 100% from 2017 onwards. The 2020 target is effective in 2020 with no delay. The legislation affects light commercial vehicles, which means vehicles used to carry goods weighing up to 3.5 tonnes (vans and car-derived vans, known as “N1”) and which weigh less than 2610 kg when empty.

otally redesigned, offering more load space, improved manoeuvrability and lower operating costs are the main strengths of the third generation Iveco Daily. Due to be launched across European markets later this year, new Daily still retains its classic traits such as ladder frame chassis structure and efficient yet powerful drivetrain. On the van version the new Daily's performance in terms of carrying capacity, load space and handling have been improved. Changes to the wheelbase in relation to the overall length of the vehicle and the length of the cargo bed allows for extending the load volume to up to 20m3 for the largest
elongated wheelbases and shortened rear overhang guarantees excellent driveability without compromising the Daily’s wellknown agility in tight corners. Volkswagen Crafter gets Euro 6 and BlueMotion Technology
I
n line with European exhaust emission standards for commercial vehicles, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has introduced new Euro 6 engines and BlueMotion technology in its Crafter range. The Volkswagen Crafter achieves the strict limits with the help of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems, as well as a built-in Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which works to purify exhaust emissions and almost eradicate particulate matter. "We currently offer Euro 6 on Crafter window vans which will be used for minibus conversions and we plan to introduce the full range closer to the time when it becomes a legal requirement," said John Kearney, Sales & Project Coordinator, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland. "Our multi-award-winning Crafter panel van, chassis and double cab models are set to become among the cleanest and most refi ned vehicles in their classes with the introduction of Euro 6 engines," stated Alan Bateson, Brand Manager Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland.
"Bluemotion is available across our Crafter range. With Bluemotion it can reduce fuel consumption by 0.6 litres per 100 km and a reduction in CO2 is also enjoyed. However, commercial vehicles are currently taxed based
Volkswagen’s Euro 6 range is offered on selected Crafter models with EU kerb weights between 2,355 kg and 2,815 kg in medium and long wheelbases, based on the group’s 2.0 litre TDI engine with an output of either 163 PS or 114 PS, which is new to the Crafter range.

LCV Sales improve across Europe
G
ood news all around Europe with sales of new Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) continuing to increase month on month. According to figures released by the European Auto Manufacturers Association (ACEA), 211,707 new light commercials/vans were registered throughout the 27 member EU States during January/February, 8.9% more than the same period last year. Spain (+50.3%), the UK (+18.5%), Italy (+12.3%) and Germany (+9.1%) were the major market movers with France posting a decline (-30%). It was better news too for new light commercial
vehicle sales in Ireland during Quarter 1 2014, posting a 43.10% increase over the first three months of last year (6,275 units versus 4,385). March sales of 1,832 units saw an increase of 45% alone. With sales of 414 units in March and 1,429 units for the Quarter, Ford once again leads the commercial vehicle market – as it has done for 24 of the past 25 years – and the company says that resurgent commercial vehicle sales point to Ireland’s continued economic recovery. “Even though the increase in car sales will attract all the headlines, it’s the growth in new commercial
sales that is the greatest cause for optimism – if small and medium-sized businesses are investing in vans, they must be confident of growth in their businesses and that augurs well for Ireland Inc.,” said Eddie Murphy, Chairman & Managing Director of Ford Ireland. Renault, Europe’s best selling and multi award winning van range increased sales with registrations up 43.9% on this time last year. Top selling counties for Renault’s van range in March were Louth, Clare and Laois.

ustomer loyalty through repeat orders is a key aspect to success in business. Even more so in the commercial vehicle sector where fleet companies remain with the same brand, despite the intense competition. One such firm is Independent Fire Services based in Navan having replaced three of its Ford Transit Connect vans with brand new
ones through Rialto Ford in Dublin. Both old and new share the same metallic silver colour scheme and sport similar black/ red/yellow livery with vehicle number on the bonnet. The new Connect 1.6 TDCi Base LWB model also features a tracking system which assists the firm in locating the vans for a speedy reaction to an emergency call out. www.fleet.ie

One-to-One Niels Loeb, Chief Exterior Designer, GM Opel with Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman, International Van of the Year Jury JS In the overall design of the new Opel Vivaro you have added to both front and rear overhangs and as well as the smaller engine block, did you have more room to play with? NL The main drive here was focusing on more interior roominess and payload volume but the second part of the equation is all about the legal requirements these days such as crash tests and pedestrian safety. JS The Opel styling seems more prominent now than the first generation? NL Yes, well the second generation is better in my opinion and of course now with the Opel styling philosophy and our design direction we’ve got a few more elements to play with to make it even more stronger. The brand bar is still there, it hasn’t really changed from the idea but let’s say the integration of the LED light feature of the lamps, and the way the lamps are executed with high gloss black and 'Blade' elements compliment the rest of the portfolio. JS From a side profile you have your distinctive ‘Blade’ element too? NL We’ve got a very strong horizontal line through the lower doors that sweeps up around the mirror. The element is supposed to make it look a litt le more car-like. At the same time these features give the body sides stability, gives it a bit of drama. JS Was there much debate in getting rid of the kink in the roofline? NL It was one of those parts that we shared on the design programme. Both parties decided that there is really no formal reason for keeping it; it is purely a visual element. It did visually separate over the cabin from the occupants in the back, it made you feel like you were away from the front, so having the roof down a bit you do get rid of some of the excess head room. We have optimised the H-Point (entry level and seat position) to come down a litt le bit lower. You didn’t need all the extra head room so we’ve come down with the additional head room at the top because that was all in that helicopter roof type design. Payload capabilities in the rear and the roof heights is the same as today’s. That’s why what we did in fact was flatten it off at the front – we just carved off that excess bubble. FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2014
JS The position of the bulkhead is different?
JS You’ve managed to integrate the hinges prett y well?
NL Yes with the repositioning of the H-Point being a litt le bit lower than today’s – we gained around 100 millimetres. In fact that’s why we had to elongate the rear of the van because some of the additional space is found in the cabin. Now we’ve got additional movement on the seat as well as the back rests with the cabin moved back allows more angle on the seat backs, better lumbar support along with the steering wheel which is also adjustable, there is more focus on making a more ergonomic seating position for the drivers. To make that effective we needed to do some tricks elsewhere, so, the 100 millimetres left on rear overhang became partly to compensate that and to enable the 3 pallets in the back that you just saw demonstrated.
NL Yes that’s much bett er now but there was a point where it looked prett y bad. There were some parts where we needed to just bite the bullet and accept that this is the requirement at the end of the day. We didn’t need to re-do the rear doors – the rear door architecture is literally the same as today’s – purely because we need to keep the width and the height of the payload area.
JS While the overall visibility remains much the same as before, you have introduced a unique innovation to help reduce blind spots? NL Th is is the patent I believe Renault and Opel worked on together which is quite clever. The sun visor is there anyway – on the passenger side there is a unique mirror with the convex glass and having it placed in the van like this is, the driver can actually look through the back. JS Have the dimensions of the side door changed? NL No, the mechanisms are all in tune there, but much more solid sounding, much more durable. We have all worked on the gap intolerances which are also much better. Just overall it’s a much better quality build. The door rails are similar and these are offered in black or body colour.
JS The interior has dramatically improved - Pleased? NL Yes, it’s better - the cabin is much more premium – it’s more a toolbox so it’s more functional than todays, a lot more storage. I like personally the application of different materials and grains as well as the surrounds around the vents. The vents close off completely and they are of a much higher quality – some of its shape you know is square and circle and gives a unique character. Then you’ve got leather clad features on steering wheel, the gear shifter and there is also some chrome inlay – to give it a bit more premium character and it’s a lot more tidier and cleaner.

New Renault Trafic & Opel Vivaro means business
All-new Opel Vivaro
C
lever innovations, low emission and economical engines together with numerous driver comforts will attract big attention towards the all-new Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro vans, particularly from the cost conscious business user. Leading up to their world premiere at the CV Show at the NEC, Birmingham the jointly designed new van line-up was first introduced to the International Van of the Year Jury at a special briefing in Amsterdam. This is only the second generation of the new mid-sized panel van from the French/German alliance since 2001 (following the mid-life facelift in 2006), and in that time, especially in the last five years, much thought and creativity has been given to the new joint model programme. Their main priority was to cater for the business manager and driver by reducing Total Cost of Ownership and providing an ‘office on wheels’ for the user. In addition, maximum use of the load space has been exploited. Available in two body lengths and two roof heights, both versions are 216 mm longer than their predecessors. But as the wheelbases remain the same, both the front and rear overhangs are longer. Variants include panel van, combi (9-seat passenger) crew van (made by Snoeks) and platform cab.
All new Renault Trafic FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2014
Unlike the previous editions, the new models feature distinct identity, sharing the family look of their respective passenger car and commercial siblings. The Renault Trafic’s frontal design is similar to that of the new Clio 4 and Kangoo with the large 'Diamond' symbol dominating the black grille while the Vivaro has Opel’s new form language with the ‘Blade’ feature on the front door panels and the trademark ‘Blade’ LED Daytime Running Lights as per the Insignia. The most significant development is with the powertrain, and the new 1.6 litre diesels lead the way for other manufacturers in the mid-sized commercial market to follow. There are two versions of this new 1.6 litre diesel with four power outputs developed by Renault from that used in the Scenic MPV. The single turbo unit produces 90 and 115 hp with 250 and 300 Nm of torque while the Twin or Bi-Turbo variant produces 120 or 140 hp with torque levels of 320 and 350 Nm. Both are said to combine excellent performance and low fuel consumption, the latter estimated to return 5.7 L/100 km CO2. Low emissions too, with an impressive figure of 149 g/km using Stop/Start technology. Renault is confident that the downsized engine with its high torque valves will provide the same power to weight ratio demands as larger capacity units, but with the benefits of lower fuel usage by up to 1 litre per 100km and lower emissions output. These engines will be branded 1.6 dCi and Energy dCi by Renault, and 1.6 CDTi and 1.6 Bi-Turbo CDTi by Opel. Much attention has been given to the cargo area which now boasts the market’s longest load-carrying ability. Even on the SWB version, three euro pallets slide in while long items up to 3.75m (SWB) and 4.14m (LWB) can be accommodated (through a tunnel under the passenger seat). Load volume now extends from 5.2m to 8.6 cu.metres. Serious creativity has continued to the cab with more space provided and many innovative fittings to make the driver’s day more pleasurable. For a start the steering column and lower seat are multi-adjustable for the perfect driving position. With the bulkhead repositioned, the driver’s seat can actually recline a little. The split passenger bench seat allows for one section nearest the driver to pop-down to become a workbench, with a removable A4 clipboard for both the driver and passenger to view – see pic. Other unique and beneficial fitt ings include cradle mounts to accommodate iPhones, and iPads/ Notebooks which in turn can connect into the

system to facilitate Sat Nav, phone calls and delivery details. Info on vehicle performance can be obtained here also. Further to the audio visuals provided, a choice of multimedia systems are offered by both manufacturers through a 7” touchscreen on the centre console to allow Sat Nav and multi connectivity. Map updates can be done through USB downloads. Up to 14 storage areas are provided for a total capacity of 90 litres – that’s lots of bottled water! There is also under seat stowage space for the shelving specialists. The original shape of the body remains unchanged. Other driver aids include a reversing camera with imaging seen through the rear view mirror, while the new ‘wide-view mirror’ built into the reverse of the passenger side sun visor more than doubles the angle of vision towards the rear-right (or left for RHD) of the vehicle, helping to reduce blind spots. A great initiative. Safety functions that are installed include ABS with Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) with the driver supported by Emergency Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist, ESP with Traction Control and Rollover Mitigation. Tyre Pressure Monitoring system is also provided.
Renault to remain dominant in Commercial Sector Since 1998, Renault’s Commercial Vehicle division has enjoyed No.1 status across Europe and with the arrival of the all-new Trafic mid-range van, the French brand is certain to remain dominant. Pascal Schmitt , VicePresident, Global Light Commercial Vehicles Director stated that the Renault LCV range “perfectly matches customer needs from the models within the Kangoo, Trafic and Master that cover from 2 to 22 cubic metres,” he said. He mentioned the Dacia Dokker in the porfolio too, which is available in mainland Europe only. Although the overall European Commercial Vehicle market is down by 5%, the light sector is up 4%, with Renault increasing its share by 6%, producing 440,000 LCVs last year. He sees further sales growth potential with additions to the Pro+ Network, Renault’s dedicated LCV sales and service centres. In highlighting the freshness of the Renault LCV line-up with the arrival of the new Trafic, Pascal reminisced on the success of the previous two generations, the fi rst produced in 1959. In the intervening years, over 1.6 million Trafics have been sold. “Trafic is Le Van à Vivre, the Van of Life,” he said.
GM Opel comeback – The success story Having encountered over a decade of sales decline across Europe, Opel’s comeback in recent times, is the success story in the industry, according to Peter Küspert, the recently appointed Head of Sales & Service for Opel in Europe. Appointed 5 months ago, Peter confidently outlined the progress made in that Opel is the number 3 car brand in Europe and the number 2 passenger car brand for owner’s General Motors. “We are already ahead of plan in the Drive 2022 campaign which is the long term strategy for a return to profit,” he explained. “By 2016, €4 billion will have been invested in developing 23 new models and 13 new engines as the brand enters new segments,” added Peter. He is pleased with the increase in sales during Quarter 1, 2014 with Opel’s LCV division, and particularly with the new Vivaro coming on stream. Strengthening its 3.6% market share in Europe is the objective. “By appointing dedicated LCV centres at our dealer network, representatives there will live, eat and breath LCVs to make the plan work,” he added. The fleet business will be particularly targeted. Fergal Marren, National Fleet Sales Manager at Opel Ireland is well clued in to this new strategy and looks forward to introducing the new Vivaro to the marketplace in September. In the meantime, a commercial version of the Mokka SUV will be launched along with upgrade to the Movano 3.5 tonne range. Text: Jarlath Sweeney – editor@fleet.ie

Prior to the launch, Cartwright says it undertook the largest prototype testing regime ever undertaken for an ambulance body in the UK. Rather than over-engineer one test body to survive all crash tests, it invested in multiple crash test bodies, each designed to provide the strength required to survive each directional crash test once. This allowed for substantial weight and material savings and ensures a fi nished product with zero internal panel reinforcing.

S
ales of vans and light commercial vehicles are on the up. 2013 saw a modest increase of 2.5% in new LCVs sold compared to 2012, but a strong start to 2014, with a 43% jump in the fi rst quarter, augurs well for a sector still reeling from some very tough years. Indeed industry experts like Ford of Ireland’s Chairman and Managing Director, Eddie Murphy sees the resurgence in LCV sales as a critical indicator to the health of the economy as a whole. “Even though the increase in car sales will att ract all the headlines, it’s the growth in new commercial sales that is the greatest cause for optimism – if small and medium-sized businesses are investing in vans, they must be confident of growth in their businesses and that augurs well for Ireland Inc,” he noted, following the release of Q1 sales figures.
Leasing Sector confident as LCV sales grow
For those involved in the leasing sector, the news is also positive. AIB Finance and Leasing’s Alan O’Regan observed, “We have seen significant growth in this market in Q1 with an increase of 43% in new vehicles being bought. Th is has been reflected in the number of vehicles we have fi nanced year-to-date, with strong potential for further growth in this market. Speaking with our customer base they fi nd their vehicles have been 'sweated' over the years and in need of replacement, and with att ractive, flexible fi nance packages available, customers are opting for this route. We see further scope for growth in residual type business, as businesses seek to maximise cashflow and not have it tied up in depreciating assets.” Peter Millen, General Manager of Northgate Vehicle Hire Ireland noted that leasing grew in popularity during the downturn. “There is no denying that the Irish market is growing; however the economic downturn prompted opportunities for leasing companies prior to its recovery. During fi nancial turbulence, leasing companies have the upper hand; businesses look at their short-term requirements in an uncertain market, they don’t feel confident in committ ing to contracts, their fi nancial requirements become a major focus and accessing funds and loans also becomes more difficult - resulting in businesses turning to smart leasing solutions.” “Many businesses have dramatically downsized their fleet and no longer have the in-house fleet management resources they once had. Outsourcing these to experts, such as Northgate, is becoming a more cost effective solution – providing leasing companies with undeniable growth potential.” “Manufacturers are also looking at the opportunities presented by a changing market place, with short-term solutions also offering a certain amount of appeal. The need to offer customers greater variety and wider opportunities with their products is also essential; making the market place much more competitive as customers’ standards increase. Th is challenges manufacturers and leasing companies alike, as we strive to meet expectations,” added Peter.
Leasing increasing in popularity If historically we’ve been a nation that has preferred to own our vehicles, be they commercial or private, there’s no doubt that increasingly operators are seeing the benefits to leasing rather than taking out loans or hire purchase agreements. Less costly monthly repayments - on average between 35% and 55% less costly than a loan repayment, and a relatively small deposit for most lease agreements are just two, while many leasing companies can incorporate maintenance costs and road tax in the lease, meaning the operator has a clear upfront picture of the costs involved over the lease period.

“Northgate provides inclusive maintenance and servicing as part of its flexible vehicle hire offering. Ian Hannon, Sales Manager, Windsor Fleet explained that Windsor Fleet provides a range of services to organisations, large and small, throughout Ireland. "We start with a professional consultancy service, with a detailed needs analysis to identify each customer’s individual requirements, fleet challenges and specific areas where we can help to drive down the total cost of ownership of vehicles. We cover all ranges of mileages, so can design a package completely around individual needs." Ian said that Windsor Fleet offers a full fleet management service, including comprehensive maintenance packages. "We work with over 300 service centres nationwide, and are completely flexible around drivers’ locations. Windsor Fleet carries out all CVRT testing on commercials on behalf of customers, and can tailor specifications for customers on an individual basis. FEATURE | 13 AGNELLI MOTOR PARK
Agnelli Motor Park (formerly Tallaght Fiat) is a relative newcomer to the market. A major dealership for Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep and Fiat Professional vehicles, the proprietors and staff have a wealth of experience spanning 30 years in the motor trade.
AIB FINANCE & LEASING Unlike the other companies featured here, AIB F&L does not directly supply vehicles to customers, but as one of the country’s largest lenders, it underpins fi nancing solutions for a host of leasing and fleet management companies. Alan O’Regan, Head of Asset Finance - Branch Banking at AIB Finance & Leasing explained that the bank offers Business Purchase Plan (HP - both fi xed and variable), Business Lease Plan and Contract Hire (Residual Leasing) packages. “Rates will obviously vary depending on the individual asset being fi nanced, the amount involved and the term, but I can indicate that a typical Internal Rate of Return (IRR) would be in the region of 5.9% - please note this is an IRR rather than an (Annual Percentage Rate (APR),” he explained. “We provide finance for terms ranging from 6 to 60 months typically but can finance an asset over a longer period in certain circumstances. At the end of the primary Leasing period our clients have two options i.e. (1) to continue the lease into a secondary period and pay an annual rental or (2) terminate the lease through 'Lease Assets Disposal' and take ownership of the asset. As a primary lender AIB F&L does not offer maintenance packages, LGV testing or in-house servicing, although Alan advises that where customers require tailored specifications e.g. tow bars or fitment of hoists, the bank can finance such modifications and/or tailored specifications assuming appropriate documentation (invoice) can be provided for the equipment. Flexible terms (can match seasonal cashflows), 100% fi nance, Balloon payments and Mobile Asset Finance Specialists nationwide are some of the factors that make AIB F&L stand out from the competition, said Alan.
Eamonn Toomey of the Sales Department said the company mainly supplies vehicles on either H.P. agreements or Lease Purchase agreements. Largely these are 3/5 year duration, with the customer taking ownership upon fi nal payment. However he noted that they are also seeing a growth in Personal Contract Plans. According to Eamonn, Agnelli Motor Park can currently offer 0% financing with 50 % deposit, while 3.9% and 5.9% preferential rates are also offered, supported by Manufacturer/Distributor. “The company provides a full range of Vehicle Maintenance, from routine servicing to repairs and also bodywork repairs. As part of a Contract –Lease Rental we can offer a 3 year vehicle rental to include all maintenance, taxing and testing etc. All our vehicles are serviced here in-house,” he explained. “Customer specifications can be met by us for prett y much anything. A lot of additional items are required, for commercial vehicles particularly, and we take great pride in being able to arrange everything to complete a vehicle to specification prior to delivery. We have a wealth of experience in this department and our 3rd party suppliers are very reliable. Eamonn further explained that the company’s warranty department has a nationwide roadside assistance package in place. “From a customer back-up point of view, we also have our own Recovery vehicle to assist in acquiring vehicles or dealing with emergencies,” he added. Although a Fiat Professional appointed dealer, Eamonn added, “We do however provide our customers with alternative options and are delighted to be competitive in all brands.”

New Van Evolutions from Fiat Professional and PSA Peugeot/Citroën

light commercial sector and for Model Year 2014, all three have benefited from a serious makeover. Upgrades have been made to the van’s styling, efficiency and comfort elements which will ultimately benefit the vehicle fleet owner and of course, the driver. Payload of up to 4.4 tonnes is class leading for a single wheel type configuration as is its drivetrain (which differs from the PSA variants) with its low emissions (158 g/km CO2) and up to 5.8 L/100 km in fuel consumption from the new 2.0 litre and 2.3 litre MultiJet II power units with 115 to 180 hp. Options on the drivetrain are Traction+ (with Hill Descent Control System), Lane Departure Warning System and ComfortMatic transmission. All versions also offer Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system as standard. Other important details pertaining to this front-wheel drive van and chassis/cab variants is that there are 8 different load volume types from 8 to 17m3 and that the Ducato is available in 4 lengths, 3 heights (vans) and 6 lengths (chassis/cab), the latter specific to its dominant market share in the motorhome market.
F
iat Professional will soon introduce the sixth generation of the Ducato, its best selling model that has sold over 2.6 million units (from 1981). Together with the sharper and more dynamic exterior styling, the interior boasts new seat designs and a multi function tablet holder that can be used with all devices such as smart phones, tablets, etc. All radios come with Bluetooth technology and MP3 player connectively. Other innovative fittings include a 5” colour touchscreen, reversing camera, built-in navigation and digital radio (DAB) playback options.
Citroën Relay

old as the ‘Jumper’ in Europe and beyond by Citroën to us it’s the Relay. Sporting the new visual identity as per the Ducato and Boxer but with the trademark Citroën double-chevron chrome bars, the new Relay aims to follow on from the success of its predecessors. The new front end is said to convey vitality and robustness through the newly designed headlamps (featuring LED daytime running lights) to the sharply styled bonnet and larger protective bumper. Featuring the same specification from an operational perspective, Citroën wishes to highlight the van’s ease of loading as per the Ducato and Boxer. As before, the Relay boasts one of the best load/volume exterior dimensions ratios in the class with a load width between the wheel arches at 1.42m and a useful width of 1.87m. Its load sill is between 493 and 602mm. The rear doors open to 96o and extend to 180o thanks to a folding check strap and even up to 270o, (which is optional). Nearly 800,000 units have been sold since launch. On its durability and controlled running costs, the new Relay was subject to over four million kilometres of pre-production trials. On decreased running costs, a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous generation has been

P
eugeot’s focus is on the improved quality, robustness and durability of the new Boxer stating that over 2.5 million kilometres have been driven under extreme conditions to verify this. It’s all about business efficiency according to Xavier Peugeot, Product Director at Peugeot. “The new Peugeot Boxer contributes to the brand’s product offensive and move up-market, through its level of quality, robustness and equipment levels, associated with a modern and att ractive style. It also supports our strategy of internationalisation with 30% of sales outside Europe.” From the pre-production tests, the work done on improving durability and noise reduction has proven successful due to the strengthening of the body structure (including all doors), newly designed suspension system and the fitting of larger brakes.
Peugeot has a long history of vans, starting in 1950. More than 1.8 million vans have been produced, nearly a million of which are Peugeot Boxers of the 3 generations produced since 1994. “Reliability and durability are naturally key factors in the purchase of a commercial vehicle, as they enhance the product’s function, performance and desirability to affect the resale value in particular. We are committed to an in-depth approach to quality in use and durability, so as to be at the level better than our competitors. These are essential levers in the Brand’s move up-market and the new Peugeot Boxer is a strong demonstration of this,” says Philippe Pelletier, Quality Director.
PSA’s 2.2 litre HDi 4-cylinder diesels feature a revised injection system that develop 110/130/150hp with torque values ranging from 250Nm to 320Nm. Topping the range is the 3.0 litre 180hp HDi with 400 Newton metres of torque. Stop/Start technology is available which helps reduce consumption and emissions. The Boxer specifications are the same as the Ducato relating to variants; load volume, wheelbases, lengths, heights, etc. A large
achieved on the 2.2 litre e-HDi 130 and 150hp versions, both fitted with Stop/Start system. Frédéric Soulier, Managing Director, Citroën Motors Ireland comments; “When it goes on sale in the third quarter this year, New Relay will build upon the success of Citroën commercial vehicles in Ireland, led by the Citroën Berlingo with a strong reputation for reliability and durability. We expect the wide choice of New Relay variants – all offering class-leading load carrying practicality and low cost of operation, coupled with even higher standards of equipment – will increase its popularity with both national fleets and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) businesses.” Thanks to efficient engineering and extensive use of high tensile steel, the New Relay range offers some of the highest available payloads in its class. New Relay panel vans offer a choice of payloads from 1140 – 1995kg. The two expected best-selling New Relay models are the New Relay 30 L1H1 HDi 110 six-speed manual and the New Relay 35 L3H2 HDi 130 six-speed manual. The 30 L1H1 HDi 110 manual model has a gross payload of 1155kg, up to 243kg better than some of its key competitors. The larger New Relay 35 L3H2 HDi 130 six-speed manual has a gross payload of 1525kg, nearly 400kg better than some of its main competitors. www.fleet.ie

Renault Kangoo Maxi ‘Express Yourself’
R
enault has always performed well in the light commercial sector and its Kangoo range has remained one of the most popular small vans on the market. The latest version of Kangoo comes with some thoughtful updates inside and out, improved fuel consumption and a five-year warranty. The Kangoo Express line up now offers three body lengths, three equipment levels and three power ratings from the 1.5 litre dCi turbo charged common rail diesel. All three versions of Kangoo share a common styling, though dimensions differ between the models. The range begins with the Express Compact followed by Kangoo Express with the Express Maxi reserved for the heavy/more bulky end. Loading capacity across the models moves from 2.3m3 to an impressive 4.6m3 and with loading lengths from 1.35 to 2.89 m with the folding front seat option. A standard internal height of 1.13m and a width of 1.22m between the wheel arches should cater well for most applications in this sector. The rear doors open to 180 degrees and our test version the 110 hp Express Maxi comes with sliding doors on both sides as standard. The 1.5 litre engine delivers the three power ratings of 75, 90 and 110 hp (55, 66, 80 kW) at 4,000 rpm. Maximum torque is achieved at 1,750 rpm with figures of 180, 200 and 240 Nm respectively. Manual transmissions are standard for all three engine variants with a 5-speed for the 75 and 90 hp, while the larger 110hp gets a 6-speed. The 90 and 110 models come with discs all round as standard, while the 75 hp has front discs and drums on the rear.
they are not electrically controlled. Although this is not a deal breaker it would be an advantage to have even the near-side mirror adjustable from the drivers seat. Another small issue we found was that the sun-visors did not cover enough of the windscreen, and created an occasional problem in early morning or late evening. On our test run we headed off in the Express Maxi for what was a comfortable and enjoyable drive. With 280 Nm of torque from the 110 hp, this Kangoo is well able to pull an 800 kg payload, and the six-speed transmission has an easy and definite shift. We would recommend the 6-speed, especially if the van was destined for inter-city work rather than city centre driving.
4.7 l/100 km. Helping to promote an economical driving style the Maxi’s rev counter is marked with a separate ‘Economy’ band from 1,500 to 2,500 rpm. This band and the gearshift indicator light provides a subtle and timely reminder to select the correct ratio and achieve best performance. It is a simple system that works well and while not intrusive it is hard to ignore. There is little to find fault with the new Kangoo Express line up. It looks great, comfortable to drive and offers operators a wide choice of engines, dimensions, and payloads. Now with a five-year warranty Renault is ‘Express’-ing a strengthened vote of confidence in its popular Kangoo range.
Although the slightly softer ride gives a touch more body roll than others in this class, Kangoo has quite a wide track and with good feedback from the variable electric steering. The handling is positive with the van having an assured feel on the road, and soaks up the bumps easily.
When compared to its predecessor the Kangoo Express has been transformed by the redesigned from profi le. The distinctive styling is very attractive and practical, with the moulded sections more resistant to the inevitable bumps The 1.5 diesel is a strong, smooth and quiet and scrapes. Despite the front appearing large, engine and Renault has addressed the when parking in tight spots the Kangoo is important issue of fuel economy claiming highly manoeuvrable and judging the front Spec Check is never an issue. Once inside the cabin appears very wide which promotes the sense of space even with the dark coloured trim. While the dash layout is not exciting, it is tasteful and perfectly functional and the materials used are well suited to the work. Seating position and ride quality are excellent and in line with Renault passenger cars. This arguably gives Kangoo a somewhat softer handling than the competition, which is not a bad thing. All round visibility is first class and the side mirrors are excellent, especially when driving in city traffic and having to locate the occasional errant cyclist. One slight criticism here is that while the mirrors are top drawer, FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2014

22 | TEST II we got the sense that rear parking sensors would be an advantage. Not that the Connect is particularly long or large but it would make reversing a little easier, and might just prevent those costly bumps and scrapes.
Ford Transit Connect
Our Connect came as a three-seater, although the centre seat is narrow and fitting three full sized adults is bit of a squeeze. However the middle seat backrest folds down to double as a useful table or desktop. If the centre seat is lifted up it allows access to a clever storage area and more storage can be found in the overhead parcel shelf and door pockets. While the full size bulkhead behind the seats is an important protective measure, it also promotes the sense of car like driving to the point where you only remember you’re driving a van when you step out from behind the wheel. So credit to Ford who has done a good job blending the work aspects of the van, with the driving style of a passenger car.
‘Connect-ing Your Business’
F
ord’s revamp of its commercial vehicle line up has to date achieved impressive results. The new Transit Custom was deservedly voted winner of the prestigious ‘International Van of the Year 2013 Award’, and the new Transit Connect continued this success by winning the 2014 award. The slightly aggressive yet contemporary styling gives Connects an energetic and professional appearance. Which shows that some time and thought has gone into the design. It also appears larger than one might expect and is well placed in the carrying capacity league tables. This is important in the fiercely competitive small van segment where there is an abundance of choice. Connect is offered as a short (L1) or long (L2) wheelbase, in either panel van or crew cab, and with three equipment levels, Base, ECOnetic and Trend. Over recent years Ford has invested heavily in its drivelines. The enhanced engine range now gives a wide choice of competent petrol and diesels, and includes the award winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost threecylinder petrol. These engines have delivered welcome improvements in performance and economy for both passenger and commercial models. For the Irish market Connect with the 1.6 TDCi diesel will most likely be the volume seller, and at 95hp (70kW) is well able to pull and smooth on the road. Our test unit with the
FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2014
1.6 TDCi was matched to a manual 5-speed transmission and the combination worked well. Transmission upgrades have refined the shift pattern and more appropriate ratios improve the overall drive - loaded or empty. On the motorway at 120 kp/h the long fifth gear was comfortable, and the lower ratios are equally well chosen to deliver good performance around the urban delivery route, which in reality is where this van will spend most of its time. To ensure reliability Ford has covered over 5 million kilometres in preproduction testing which included in-fleet trials, and is confident that Connect will operate trouble free. Once inside, the first thing you notice is the cabin space to the front, which is more like that found in a large people carrier than a van. The interior layout is similar to that found in Ford’s passenger models and lifts Connect up a level. Equally good quality seating with a wide range of adjustments makes it easy to get comfortable. From the driver's seat visibility is good, though
Although Connect appears quite large and sits relatively high there is no perceptible body roll and the van is very sure footed. We felt that even when loaded with cargo giving it a high centre of gravity ensuring that it would remain comfortably stable. This is promoted by the way the van steered which feels positive and accurate through the bends, and well weighted when cornering. Connect is an enjoyable van to drive and with an ability to take two Europallets comes with good carrying capacity. Both versions have a internal height of 1861 mm and carrying volume comes in at 3.0m3 and 3.7m3 for the L1 and L2 respectively. Similarly load through lengths are 3.0m and 3.4m for the Trend models and both can tow up to 1200 kg. In addition, Ford claims the widest door opening in the class, and the cargo bay is well specified with lashing points as standard. The revamp of Ford’s small commercial range presently stretches from Fiesta and Focus to the largest LWB Hi-roof Transit and now arguably offer customers the widest choice of light commercials on the market, a selection of vehicles and carrying capacities to help any type of business to ‘Connect.’
