With emerging technology trends playing an ever more vital role in our industry, our Chief Technology Officer, Rob Snelson, tells us how his career path led him to travel, what constitutes his idea of holiday heaven, and why joining Team Riv was a good decision!

How did your career in travel begin?

Like a lot of people, I wanted to travel with my work. I originally wanted to be a marine biologist (being given a goldfish when you are 6 will have this effect) and studied the subject at university. However, this never took off career wise, so I focused on my other passion which was technology. After working for many years in retail and then legal sectors, I was offered a technology leadership role within a large travel business based in Manchester. This role took me across the world visiting Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong, and lots of other fantastic places.

What brought you to Riviera?

It is going to sound like a cliché, but ultimately the people I met during the recruitment process convinced me that the role at Riviera was right for me. For someone who is extremely interested in technology, I am also passionate about the people I work alongside. The people I have met since joining has convinced me that I have absolutely made the right decision!

Tell us about your most memorable moments please!

During my short time at Riviera I have been known as:

What do you think you’ve learnt from your time at Riviera?

That every single person across the company contributes to the amazing experiences our customers have when they travel with us. I can’t put it any better than this Feefo review:

Where are your favourite places and why?

This is a really challenging question to answer, it is like asking someone what their favourite film is. The answer is that it depends on the circumstances... With family it would have to be Majorca in the summer. Guaranteed sunshine, fun in the pool with great food in the evening. With my wife Sarah, it would be Ibiza or a visit to Rome. With friends, it would be skiing in the French Alps.

Whilst I love travelling, home (which is Bury with its ‘world famous’ market!) is also where my heart is, and I love having family and friends over for a BBQ or to watch an important sporting event.

What are you looking forward to most?

Two things immediately come to mind: To continue supporting the technology and change team with the great work they do every day to improve the services we provide.

To always listen to colleagues and customers to see how we can further improve what we do in both the short and long term.

What are your own holiday plans this year?

We are still catching up on holidays we couldn’t take during the pandemic so this year has been a ‘big’ travel year.

As a family we went to Sorrento and Capri where my teenage son purchased a piece of Mount Vesuvius. I am convinced it is a piece of an old car park! He thinks it is great, and that is the main thing.

I’ve also managed a few days in Corfu with my wife Sarah to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we are also heading to Lisbon later in the year with some friends – looks like such an interesting capital to explore with so much history, incredible architecture plus great food and wine.

If you were marooned on a desert island, who would you like with you and why?

It depends! If this is a luxury Maldives, all-inclusive type desert island then I would have to say Sarah (if I suggested anyone else, I would be in serious trouble).

However, if this is a genuine desert island with no civilisation or supplies, I would have to take my dad. He used to be an engineer, has a psychology degree and is a fantastic problem solver, so my chances of survival would increase dramatically! ●

Architecture shapes our history. A witness to the past and a legacy of those who came before us, the evolution of our built environments shows us just how far humans have come. Architecture impacts us all every single day, but it’s often only when we travel somewhere new that we have the time to notice not just its practical application, but its aesthetic beauty too.

From Uzbekistan’s Islam Hodja minaret to the 14th-century mausoleums of The Silk Road, Cologne’s regal cathedral or the tombs and temples of Petra carved into pink sandstone cliffs, the world is rich in buildings that amaze and inspire. Whether a building marks the spot where great events in history happened or is just a window into life from another age, you can only wonder about the stories these landmarks could tell.

One of the most famous of towers in the world, and once the tallest man-made structure in the world, the delicate iron latticework of the Eiffel Tower rises 324 metres into the Parisian sky. Built as a temporary entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, some considered its unconventional design an eyesore but quickly becoming a beloved symbol of the city, it has stood the test of time. Its potential as a radio transmission tower was soon realised and it played a crucial role in the development of wireless telegraphy, serving as a military communications post during World War I. From marriage proposals on its observation decks, to stolen kisses on the Champ de Mars, Gustav Eiffel’s globally recognised creation has witnessed more than its fair share of drama, celebration and love over the decades.

When the 8-year project to build the Colosseum was complete, the celebrations lasted 100 days. The Romans certainly knew how to throw a party! But perhaps they also realised they’d created one of the greatest structures in the world, whose ancient arches are synonymous not only with the city in which it stands but with the extraordinary people who built it. The largest amphitheatre in existence, with a capacity for 50,000-80,000 spectators, the complex covers two hectares of land and attracts seven million people a year to walk in the footsteps of gladiators and emperors. Architecturally avant-garde, the Colosseum had a retractable awning that would provide shade from the scorching sun whilst hidden beneath you’ll encounter a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that housed animals, gladiators and props plus a series of trapdoors and a lift system that could be used for special effects during the games. Picture yourself standing at the Sun Gate overlooking the ancient city of the Incas against the spellbinding backdrop of the Andes. There are few places on earth quite like Machu Picchu. Trek the famous trail to experience epic views as well as a glimpse into a mysterious human history. Abandoned and hidden from the outside world for centuries, the city was rediscovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham but its purpose remains a mystery to this day.

The Croatian city of Split is principally famous for a single building, the Emperor Diocletian’s huge palace, which served as his luxurious retirement home following his abdication in 305 AD. One of the greatest structures of the Roman Empire, crafted from the finest Italian marble, with columns and sphinxes from Egypt, you’ll feel the weight of history all around as you wander under its high vaulted ceilings marvelling at the extraordinary 4thcentury engineering.

Speaking of monuments to love, no list of architectural icons would be complete without a mention of the Taj Mahal. One of the new seven wonders of the world, in a country with over a billion people and a rich cultural history to boot, the ethereal silhouette of this architectural masterpiece is one of India’s greatest assets. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the elegant symmetry of its cleverly angled minarets, white marble inlaid with jasper, jade and turquoise and the geometric perfection of its design certainly sets the bar very high when it comes to romantic gestures!

When you visit in a misty sunrise or in the glow of dusk you’ll experience it at its most intriguing. Prepare to be dazzled (if not a little lovestruck) by the beauty of its perfect silhouette shimmering on the horizon. ●

With its enchanting landscapes and cosy village vibes, it’s little wonder this alpine gem was an attractive prospect for the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Gregory Peck to name but a few.

Very much an A-lister when it comes to skiing, Klosters’ impeccable slopes (paired with its more metropolitan neighbour Davos) is high on the list of Switzerland’s most glamorous resorts. But don’t worry, whatever season you’re planning to visit, you don’t need to be a star of the silver screen or have a royal title to experience the magic!

On arrival prepare to have your breath taken away faster than you can say ‘fondue’. This is stunning scenery and then some: picture-perfect mountains, dreamy chalets and more Instagramworthy views than you can shake a selfie stick at. You’ll only be sorry not to have more than 24 hours here.

Once the snow has melted Klosters is a hikers’ paradise, so perhaps spend some of the morning exploring a few of the many mountain trails. The landscape will leave you in awe: stride through picture-perfect pastures of vibrant green, catching sight of a bell-clad cow or two perhaps, and meadows strewn with colourful wildfl owers and glistening streams. From gentle strolls to challenging treks, there’s a trail for every level of walking enthusiast. Just be sure to take your camera along to capture the jaw-dropping views.

Return to the village for well-deserved coffee and chocolate cakes or for something more hearty dip into a classic cheese fondue to enjoy an array of deliciously gooey dairy delights – an absolute must in the mountains!

Visit the pretty Klosters Church in the heart of the village to admire the sparkling stained-glass windows and pristinely kept grounds. Small but perfectly formed and housed in the 16th century Nutli Hüschi, you’ll find an equally neat collection of exhibits and displays detailing what life was like through the centuries. End the afternoon with a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets browsing the boutique shops and galleries.

Later reward yourself with a decadent Swiss chocolate experience – visit a local chocolatier and let your tastebuds go wild! There’s plenty of stylish cuisine on offer in Klosters too so take your pick for dinner. From high end hotels with international menus to local restaurants serving hearty alpine fare – Swiss Alpine macaroni, venison sausages, fresh turbot and rosti – you certainly won’t go hungry.

New Year on the Danube river cruise

When it comes to taking better care of the world we live in, we know we should all be doing more. This is why we have recently announced our commitment to make a new series of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) pledges.

These pledges, highlighted in a plan we’ve called ‘Doing the right thing’, cover four primary areas in which we’re committing to make a difference: sustainability, managing our carbon footprint, operating ethically and our charitable contributions.

But we know saying is one thing. We want to ensure these pledges are meaningful so wherever possible, we have set measurable goals to ensure we remain accountable for our actions and deliver on the objectives we have set ourselves.

Our goals include:

Reducing our guests’ carbon footprint by 20% by 2028 – which will be measured on a per customer, per night basis – across each holiday category. This will be achieved in various ways –for example by increasing included rail travel options on some of our existing holidays and converting our river cruise ships to greener energy sources.

Enforcing a supplier ethics policy and sustainability checklist, covering measures such as labour standards, human rights, animal welfare and renewable energy. All our suppliers must agree to and implement these measures if they are working with Riviera.

Halving the use of plastic and paper by 2025. We plan to achieve this by transitioning to e-docs wherever possible, developing an enhanced digital brochure and reducing what we print. We’ll also replace plastic luggage tags with high-quality, reusable tags.

Riviera will also ensure it has in place a fair, inclusive and enriching work environment for all. We will do this via activities including hosting regular colleague ‘Get Talking’ sessions, to discuss topics such as mental health and diversity, and offering volunteering opportunities with local charities.

The Douro Valley is itself an official UNESCO World Heritage site which should be reason enough to come and see what all the fuss is about. Prehistoric carvings found in the northern Douro Valley revealed the region has been inhabited for over 25,000 years, and wine has been produced from its sun-drenched and steeply layered vineyards for over 2 millennia. In 1756 Prime Minister Marques de Pombal demarcated the borders, making it the oldest wine producing region in the world which led to its main product of Port wine becoming world famous. Britain’s trading relationship with Portugal has been a long one – and several wars between England and France during the 18th century considerably increased the demand for Port wines in Britain!

The wine

The Douro Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. UNESCO-listed and an hour’s drive from Porto, where the main ambassador of the Portuguese wines, Port wine is produced, this amazingly beautiful area is surprisingly rugged, with steep sloping hillsides covered in terraced vineyards, rising up from the mighty river Douro. With cold winters and warm, dry summers, the long mountain range protects the valley on the west side from the cold and humid winds that sweep from the Atlantic Ocean, producing both unique full-bodied, tannic red wines but also, crisp, mineral, fruity light-bodied white wines. Douro reds range in style from light and fruity to lush and smooth, to dark and dense with herby fl avours of mature dark fruit. The wines are often a rich inky purple due to the thickening of the skins from the region’s intense summer heat. Look out for Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca.

Throw in a mesmerising snow-capped mountain backdrop and legendary tapas bars, and we defy you not to be captivated by one of Spain’s most vibrant and beautiful cities.

When you come to Granada you come for the Alhambra fortress – Granada’s star attraction and one of Spain’s, if not the world’s, most iconic sights. The most intact medieval palace on the globe, ethereal, it rises in architectural perfection, from the sunbaked Andalusian landscape of the Darro Valley. With the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada puncturing the skyline, its beauty is simply unmatched anywhere else on the continent. The magnificent complex, dating from the 9th century comprises dazzling palaces, cool patios and serene pools. The fort and its walls were extensively rebuilt during the 13th century by Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar, the Moorish ruler of the Emirate of Granada. The spectacular Nasrid palaces built by the Nasrid Kings – the last Moorish rulers of Granada – date from the 13th and 14th centuries; here you’ll find some of the most fascinating and intricate interiors you’ll ever see, decorated in beautiful filigrees with elaborate inscriptions and poetic phrases. The Generalife was the Alhambra’s summer palace, its exquisite gardens a cool haven for the sultans from the intense heat. Walk the neat paths alongside carefully tended fl owerbeds and mirrorlike ponds, the still water refl ecting elegant archways and whitewashed walls. A scenic walkway between the

The Albaicín, the ancient Arab quarter, is the perfect place to while away the hours, meandering through its tight network of winding cobbled streets, between the whitewashed houses and atmospheric squares, the scent of jasmine lingering in the air. Pause at the Mirador San Nicolás, a popular square perfectly located to savour views of the Alhambra and the mountains beyond. Then take in the elegance of the 15th-century Palacio de Dar al-Horra, the residence of the sultana Aixa, mother of Muhammad XII, the last Moorish King of Granada. Its rooms are traditionally located on three levels around a cool central courtyard and tranquil pool and after the Alhambra, it’s one of Granada’s finest Moorish buildings so definitely worth a visit.

Step back in time as you stroll the gypsy quarter of Sacromonte in the shadow of the fine 17th-century Abbey perched high in the hills above. Some of the locals still live in the ancient white caves carved out of the rock and the haunting sound of fl amenco fills the air. Or stroll the streets and squares of Realejo, Granada’s Jewish quarter stopping to admire the Santo Domingo church and its beautifully ornate interior.

At the city’s heart you’ll find the majestic cathedral – its towering façade the work of a local architect Alonso Cano. A mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, the cathedral dates

from 1518 and, although it was in construction for over 180 years, and two 80-metre towers were originally planned, only half of one was ever finished. In the Carmen de los Martires Gardens you’ll encounter a haven of colourful fl owerbeds, shimmering ponds and leafy paths; its shaded walkways provide cool sanctuary in spring and summer, and its views of the landscape beyond Granada are captivating. Climb the spiral staircase of its fairytale tower to take in lovely views of the gardens and city beyond.

The Carrera del Darro is Granada’s main street which winds its way from the Plaza Nueva towards the Albaicín alongside the Darro river. Lined by centuries-old buildings draped in colourful blossom, take in the views as the river gently fl ows under two of Granada’s oldest surviving bridges. Tucked away underneath a private house are the oldest and best-preserved Arabic baths in Spain; the banuelo dates from around the 11th century and although the baths no longer exist, its elegant Moorish archways and striking domed ceilings are incredibly intact after a thousand years.

Arty types shouldn’t miss Granada’s leading art museum which houses over 2,000 works, including important religious paintings and sculptures dating from the 16th century. And when you’re ready for a break you’ll find some of Granada’s best tapas bars on and around the Plaza Nueva. Like a true Granadino, prop yourself at the bar under the hanging legs of jamón, dry-cured Spanish ham, and order a refreshing aperitif – keep it local and try the typical vermouth, red and sweet and served over ice. ●

Next March Riviera turns 40. The travel industry has had more than its fair share of ups and downs during the last few years, so we think our special birthday is definitely something worth celebrating. As we head towards a new Riviera decade, we’re excited at the prospect of what lies in store, but it also feels like an opportune moment to share some of our most special memories with you too.

We’re extraordinarily proud of our heritage; from humble beginnings with a handful of tents on a campsite in the south of France during the early 1980s, our founder Michael Wright, with his extraordinary passion for travel and history, created the largest escorted tour operator in the UK, and our ethos to provide an exceptional holiday experience to the world’s most fascinating destinations, that’s as educational as it is entertaining, all for the best value you’ll find anywhere, remains as strong as it ever was. In those early days, our advertising was solely with regional newspapers and the concept of Reader Offers was still very much in its infancy. On the 8th March 1984, the very first Riviera Travel coach tour to Paris ran in conjunction with the Burton Mail newspaper and of course even today, though we’ve

had to upscale a couple of times over the years, our head office remains in Burton-upon-Trent. Our first office, The Manor, was two small rooms in the upstairs of a lovely Georgian house (admittedly with not so lovely vivid sunshine-yellow woodchip on the walls) but there was always a warm and friendly welcome from the reservations team – of just four – and the office cat, who spent her days wandering over and around the desks and telex machine!

The first local paper we teamed up with was the Bucks Free Press and from there we began working with numerous titles all over the country; from the Newcastle Chronicle & Journal to the Loughborough Echo, Southern Daily Echo to Western Mail, there was virtually no corner of the UK we weren’t working with. Michael would arrive at the paper’s offices with his

breaks: Amsterdam, the Rhine Valley and Brittany – and later Normandy, the Moselle and by 1989, Bruges – which became one of our classic tours, and still operates today via Eurostar. We had customers who loved the tour so much they returned year after year – one loyal couple ended up travelling with us to Bruges 14 times. We always collected our customers from local pick-up points and the tour guide – was always on the coach from the very first minute, no matter what time of the day or night it was. And coach trips could be long: Newcastle to the Dover-Calais ferry to drive through France and Belgium and finally Amsterdam, is a perfect case in point!

the varied seasonality: South Africa, Peru, Sri Lanka and Vietnam – to which there were no direct flights at that time, so it really was off the tourist beaten track. Again, all these destinations still feature as very popular holidays in our collection today! 2009 saw us venturing into river cruising. The concept was always that it was ‘escorted touring on water’ and by attracting a slightly older market, it ensured we kept our customers for longer. Our first itineraries along the Rhine and Moselle were designed often to sail overnight as that was what we initially thought our guests wanted but we soon realised quite the opposite – that sailing was very much part of

But as we always advertised under the publication’s own name, Riviera Travel, just featuring in the small print, remained relatively unknown as the operator.

All that began to change once we started working with the national papers. In 1992 we began advertising with the Sunday People – part of the Mirror Group. We had a full page advert and filled 35 coaches off a single promotion – needless to say, we swiftly began working with the majority of the nationals and over the next 10 years as our profile increased with the likes of The Telegraph, The Times, The Guardian & Observer, only about 5% of what we sold was through the regional press. Consequently, our market began to change, and our tours adapted accordingly. No longer were we offering solely coach tours, as many of our holidays were by air, using as many regional airports where possible for maximum convenience – much as we do today.

Listening to and understanding our guests has always been at the heart of what we do, and we’ll always look to tweak and adapt our itineraries according to feedback. Since those early days of cruising, we have built our own ships and are proud to have some of the most luxurious vessels sailing European waterways. We also launched our first luxury yacht itinerary in 2016 in the Adriatic, and now operate with 6 superb vessels on a variety of routes along the spectacular Dalmatian coast. We’ve since added ocean and expedition cruising to our collection as well as the opportunity to cruise aboard an authentic tall ship for a real nostalgic sailing experience. By 2014 we were carrying in excess of 110,000 customers on holidays all over the world. On such a high note, our founder decided ‘retirement’ beckoned and we were sold to a private investor, who continues to help us expand and develop the business.

It was always our plan to attract customers with a city break and then be able to take them on longer holidays, further afield. Although we’d attempted New York in 1986, it took another 20 years until we operated our first long haul programme in 2006 – a selection of 4 escorted tours to different continents to take account of

Since the 7th century it has been a sacred site for Shintoism, the country’s indigenous religion and its symbolism is hugely significant. Climbing to the summit of this volcanic global icon is at the top of many people’s bucket list and nearly half a million people a year make the trek. The climbing season is July to September

but even if you’re not considering an ascent, it’s a breathtaking sight.

Travel in spring to experience the sakura, cherry blossom during a spectacular fortnight in which the famous trees are in full bloom. Picnicking under the trees is a popular pastime with hanami (fl ower viewing groups) everywhere you look! Sakura marks the arrival of spring, a time for hope and renewal, but the cherry blossom also symbolises the transience of life, one of Buddhism’s most important themes.

Japan has an estimated 80,000 temples and shrines in all shapes and sizes, and some are over 1,000 years old. In Kyoto you’ll find Kinkakuji, an incredible golden temple, together with the beautiful Honmaru Gardens and the famous rock garden of Ryōanji. The country’s Buddhist temples and zen gardens are particularly magical, tranquil places, where the simplicity of their asymmetrical form and uncluttered design, creates a sense of calm stillness. Visit the charming coastal town of Kamakura, home to one of the country’s greatest Buddhist statue, temple and gardens.

When you are exploring the cities, you’ll notice how incredibly efficient the public transport system is, with ultra frequent services departing every few minutes. With an extensive high-speed rail network operating across the country, the famous shinkansen bullet train

operates all over Japan. The popular Tokaido Shinkansen line, connecting Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, is Japan’s busiest with 370 departures each day!

Whilst you might have sampled Japanese cuisine closer to home, nothing beats savouring the fl avours of authentic dishes in the homeland. You should make sure you experience the sushi conveyor belt and sake bars or the delicious street food like takoyaki in Osaka. Look out for authentic Kaiseki food too – a traditional cuisine that has evolved over thousands of years, using ingredients that are rarely found in any other part of the world. Interestingly Tokyo boasts more Michelin stars than any other city in the world – with an impressive twelve 3-star restaurants, so you can be assured great food plays a huge role in the culture here!

Tradition runs through every aspect of Japanese life. Experience an onsen, a traditional Japanese bath in a mineral-rich spring heated by geothermal forces. You’ll find it a unique experience and very different from bathing in other countries around the world – make sure you’re au fait with the written and unwritten rules before you try it! Controversial and created from huge concrete tubes, you’ll love or hate the stark modernist appearance of San Francisco’s Vaillancourt Fountain located in Justin Herman Plaza. Designed by the Québécois artist Armand Vaillancourt in 1971, there have been several unsuccessful proposals over the decades to demolish the 12-metre-high creation. Making headlines in 1987, during a free concert in the city Bono, the lead singer of U2 spray painted ‘Rock and roll stops the traffic’ on to it.

The water fountains in Bucharest’s Unirii Square are one of the most impressive, choreographed water displays in the world. Built during the communist period, they underwent huge restoration – claiming to be the first smart computerdesigned fountains in Europe with a Guinness World Record for the longest choreographed fountain system. If you’re out and about in the Romanian capital by day, the series of pools encased in a massive roundabout are pretty grand, but by night, they’ll blow your socks off. Several times a week during the high season, fountain-spotters are treated to a free fantastic 45-minute show of colour, music and 3D laser projections on to the water.

Florence

In the middle of a small traffic island in the Tuscan city of Florence stands a lone, bronze figure; this is ‘Rain man’, a contemporary artwork gifted to the city by its creator, the artist Jean-Michel Folon in 2002. Dressed for the weather in Sherlock Holmes style trench coat, hat and boots, he stands over 3 metres high and above his head, the water streams down around him, cleverly creating the appearance of an umbrella. Damaged twice by motorists in recent years, the mayor suggested a relocation to a more tranquil spot; the Florentines voted overwhelmingly in favour of tradition and Rain man stayed put.

Renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles conceived the idea for the ‘God, our Father, on the Rainbow’ fountain back in 1946 as a tribute to the newly created UN, and planned to build it in New York. After years of fruitless discussion, the project was scrapped, to be recommissioned 40 years later by an American sculptor and pupil of Milles, Marshall Fredericks. Finished in 1995, and standing 18 metres high in Nacka Strand, a suburb on the main waterway approaching central Stockholm, it depicts a naked God balancing at the end of a monumental arch, hanging stars in the sky, tossed his way by an angel stood at the foot of the sculpture. The cascading water, descending and ascending is said to be symbolic of the Holy Spirit and eternal life. It’s certainly an awesome sight.

Versailles

With its foaming horses, whales and tritons blowing water from wreathed horns, this eye-catching French fountain is one of the best. Located within the extensive 2,000acre estate of the Palace of Versailles, amidst Louis XIV’s exquisitely designed gardens this watery status symbol was inspired by the idea of the Roman sun god Apollo rising from the sea at dawn. Designed by Charles Le Brun, its cascading torrents stand at the head of a milelong canal through the lavish estate.

If you want to get the absolute most out of a Riviera holiday, then Signature Tours are the perfect choice. I often lead Riviera tours in Madeira, and guests on the Signature Tours to this picturesque Portuguese island really appreciate the extra experiences. There’s a welcome drink on the first evening before dinner, on one of the hotel’s lovely terraces overlooking a tropical garden and the vast blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a great way to start the holiday and mingle with your fellow travellers too.

One of my favourite experiences has to be afternoon tea at the famous Reid’s hotel, served in one of the hotel’s elegant cocktail bars, which also has fabulous ocean views. Reid’s is where Winston Churchill once stayed, and it’s a thrill to think that you’re following in the great man’s footsteps – guests really love it. Continuing on a foodie theme, we also enjoy a delicious three-course lunch and wine tasting at one of the island’s finest vineyards. Eating local specialities is the perfect way to enjoy another culture and in such beautiful surroundings, it’s a real treat. Madeira wine is world-famous of course so to be able to sample some of the finest produce in the country of its creation is really special.

Timeless Provence

I absolutely love the Signature Tours. Accompanying a smaller number of guests allows for a more relaxed pace with more time to absorb everything we see – it feels quite intimate and I really enjoy that aspect. Both hotels we use on this tour are great and very well located for exploring this spectacular area of France.

As you might expect the food is great too and there’s a good balance of opportunity to dine with your fellow travellers and independently too. We dine at an organic vineyard and the lunch is very tasty! The seasonal menu uses the freshest local products – it’s always very well received by guests. And we get to taste some wonderful wines of course whilst leisurely enjoying the surroundings of this beautiful estate – it’s a truly wonderful experience and a real highlight of the tour.

We also dine in style at a renowned local restaurant which proudly holds the accreditation of Maître Restaurateur We’re greeted by a refreshing aperitif on arrival, before a gourmet feast is served with classic Provençal dishes – all served with local wines.

From a Tour Manager’s point of view the mix of visits and tours and time to relax offers a perfect balance – I would do this holiday continually if I could! Guests do seem to enjoy the smaller group and often say they will be looking out for Signature Tours in the future.

The Silk Road

I first went to Uzbekistan in 2019 and everyone I knew said “You are going to a ’STAN?!”. The comments ranged from “Is it safe?” to “Isn’t it just desert?” and “What will you eat?”. Well, four years on and I am often asked the same things, and I can honestly say it’s one of the safest, most welcoming and friendly places I have been to, and the food is delicious!

The history of the country is entwined with Britain over the fascinating story of the Silk Road, but there is so much more to discover. For me what is so interesting is how advanced Central Asia was in terms of mathematics, science, art and poetry when most of Europe was in the Middle Ages. The astounding architecture and beautiful tilework leave you speechless, especially in the historic city of Khiva – probably one of my favourites as walking through there is like stepping back into another time. In the evening when the groups and most of the traders have gone, you can safely wander around saying hi to the kids playing in the street and watching the sun go down over the minarets.

Our small groups make it easy to visit all the stunning mosques and monuments, and we have a local guide who doesn’t just tell us about the history of the country, but shares what life is like for a modern Uzbek, and how the country is changing since independence. We get to walk through a market in Tashkent and taste the delicious bread straight from the oven!

Uzbeks are really friendly and love having their photo taken with tourists! And they don’t mind you taking theirs – the old tradition of keeping their gold in their teeth makes for some super pictures!

What surprises some people is the quality of the hotels and the trains. I love the reactions from the group when they do the tour – they arrive not really knowing what to expect and leave with a whole new perspective on this part of the world and an appetite for more adventure! ●

There’s a lot to see as you cruise the great rivers of Europe from historic Koblenz to the breathtaking Hungarian capital, Budapest, on a classic river cruise. You’ll probably be au fait with the big-name highlights that you’ll find along the way but there’s plenty of lesserknown treasures to discover too. Here’s our quick guide to some riverside gems that you’ll be very glad you stumbled across.

Boppard

Step into Boppard’s storybook setting, a web of cobbled streets and medieval, halftimbered dwellings, plus a lovely riverside promenade along the Rheinallee; you’ll soon realise why it’s affectionately known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’. Look out for the striking white stone churches of St. Severus and Carmelite, the picturesque marketplace and crumbling ruins of the old fortress.

Miltenberg

Admire the impressive gatehouse, standing like a proud guardian of the village, and the traditional fachwerk buildings fringing the historic market square with its trickling fountain and ornately carved dancing cherubs. Legend has it that locals were allowed free wood from the surrounding forests, resulting in an abundance of the type of timberwork. Make time for a glass of the local brew in the decorative Gasthaus Zum Riesen, supposedly the oldest tavern in Germany.

One of the Main’s hidden treasures, off the main tourist trail, Wertheim is a lovely surprise, with its cluster of church spires, turrets, pastel-coloured little houses and fi shing boats jostling on the quayside. A regal russetwalled 12th-century castle surveys the little town from up high whilst down below in the colourful market square you’ll find the blink-and-you’llmiss-it Zobelhaus – a contender for Germany’s narrowest house.

Elegant and resplendent straddling the river, is the Bavarian city of Würzburg, founded in the 10th century as the capital of the kingdom known as Franconia. From the huge Marienberg fortress to the neat rows of grand pastel-coloured facades, spirea and domes, there’s plenty of grandeur here. The jewel in the crown is the Residenz, a Versailles-like palace, that whisks you away to the romance of the baroque era as you wander through its sumptuous rooms and ornate staircases, amongst an eye-watering collection of priceless tapestries, furniture and artwork.

Once an important garrison guarding the most northwesterly point of the Roman Empire, you’ll find traces of its past as you stroll amongst the merchants’ houses and elegant squares of the old town. Gaze in wonder at the old camp gate, the Porta Praetoria, mighty Gothic cathedral, and Altes Rathaus – seat of the Diet, or parliament of the Holy Roman Empire from 1663 to 1806. There’s lovely views from the landmark stone bridge too – and you’ll understand why the town calls itself ‘Germany’s medieval miracle’.

Where the rivers Inn and Ilz meet the Danube, you’ll find the ancient Veste Oberhaus, a hilltop fortress that has been guarding the ‘Three Rivers City’ since the 13th century. There’s plenty to savour in this laid-back little town: step inside the white twin-domed cathedral of St. Stephen, to view a baroque confection of towering columns, stuccowork, gilding and ceiling frescoes, plus the world’s largest organ.

LAKE GARDA

This is the more vibrant of the three lakes and the largest, although possibly the least known outside Europe. Temperatures vary, but it can be hot, so if you want to go in a cooler period opt for April to May or late September to October. There is a lot to do around Garda, with many lovely towns to visit –there really is something for everyone. The food is fantastic here too – you can literally eat and drink your way around the lake!

I personally love Garda as you can travel all around the lake experiencing the different lakeside towns, all with their own unique character. The north shore with its mountain backdrop is more dramatic, attracting wind and kite surfers, and it’s a popular spot for cyclists. You’ll also notice the strong Austrian influences here which can be seen in the menus offered at local restaurants; a lot of the dishes have an Austrian German twist!

The southern shores are a lot fl atter and at times you can’t even see across to the other side of the lake. You can enjoy scenic walks along lakeside paths between some of the resorts, away from the main roads; the walk between Riva and Torbole is particularly picturesque, taking in the lush lakeside gardens and pretty park areas along the way.

The lakeside towns offer plenty of scope for exploration, with winding little streets leading off from historic main squares, with no end of choice of cafés to enjoy a cappuccino or a gelato – and a spot of people watching! Lake Garda has some of the best ice cream parlours, where you’ll find a whole spectrum of fl avours and colours – the biggest problem is eating them before they melt! Shoppers will love the little local stores selling leather products and very good value handbags too – Bardolino is probably my favourite resort with colourful fl owers and plants all along the lake front.

There is a local market that moves around the lake during the week – it’s a great spot for mingling with the locals whilst soaking up the atmosphere as you browse the colourful fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious local Italian cheeses and leather products. The

whole area is great for wine-tasting – look out for the local Bardolino wines from around the lake, those from the Trentino area, as well as the neighbouring Asti region.

In Malcesine you’ll find a cable car that you can take to the top of Montebaldo – have a drink in the restaurant there and savour the amazing views. If you’re feeling energetic there is also a walking path back down again, but it can be a bit steep so appropriate clothing and walking shoes are advised. Pay a visit to the town’s historic castle – climb the turrets for panoramic vistas! Whilst we do visit many of the most popular towns on the lake, you may want to explore others independently too. The local ferry boats are a good way to get around or revisit some of your favourite spots.

If you want to explore away from the lake, head to Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet, the famous Piazza Bra and the Arena with the famous Verona Opera. It’s a compact city with so much history and very easy to navigate. Away from the lake to the north is the town of Trento which you can access by local bus; it’s a historic spot, off the main tourist trail but again has a lot to enjoy.

Le Palme hotel – it’s the only hotel with a roof top bar. On a clear day you can see right across to Switzerland.

If you want to escape the lake for a day, there’s easy access to Milan on the local train too.

LAKE COMO

I’d describe Como as the most dramatic of the Italian lakes, encased by mountains on all sides. Geographically it’s also a bit different as it has two legs, the Lecco and Como leg (each on different sides of a mountain which runs in between the lake). The latter is the most well-known choice for a holiday with an abundance of swanky five-star hotels. Once quite a sleepy place, Como has been made even more popular in recent years thanks to a number of films and TV shows filmed in the area – and George Clooney famously has a home here too which has made it a popular destination for the Americans!

Just like the other lakes, it’s a wonderful area to explore – travel over the border into Switzerland and then north towards the ski resorts and the start point of the great Bernina Express scenic rail journey. Isola Comacina is the only island on Lake Como, but you’ll need to take a taxi boat to get there. It’s a super spot for lunch or dinner but it’s a bit on the pricey side so save it for a treat!

LAKE MAGGIORE

Partly Swiss and partly Italian, the pace of life around the elegant shores of Lake Maggiore seems slower. The views are dominated by the Borromean islands of Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori and Isola Madre. Local ferry boats offer a frequent service so you can easily sail across to explore; the gardens of Isola Bella are incredible, tiered like a wedding cake and home to white peacocks.

The town of Stresa has a very colourful lake front, fringed with beautiful oleander trees which bloom early season, sweet-smelling magnolia and smart hotels all competing for the best fl ower displays. A wander around its centre is like stepping back in time with a host of chic little boutiques and tempting delis.

Take a scenic lake-front walk from one end of Stresa to the Lido area where you’ll find a perfectly situated restaurant and café to enjoy the island views. Don’t forget your camera if you’re heading to

The pretty town of Bellagio is known as the pearl of the lake; you can easily take a walk down to the Villa Melzi with its beautiful gardens and then further on to a local fi shing village; it’ll give you a true feel of Lake Como. From Bellagio you’ll be able to find your way down into the other leg of the lake too, with super views of the small fi shing boats jostling on the quayside.

Local ferry boats run frequently day and night between Cadenabbia, Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna which is a beautiful little resort and definitely worth a visit. And make sure you get the opportunity to sample the local fi sh dishes which are fantastic – and perhaps the typical dish of Valtellina, pizzoccheri, one of my favourites; it’s a hearty mountain dish made with a buckwheat pasta, Fontina cheese, butter and savoy cabbage so good for a cooler day!
