The truly enormous crinoline skirt depicted in countless fashion plates of the early 1860s is much rarer in photographs. The widest example here is worn by the Vicomtesse de Santa Quinteria [#TK]: over the still popular flounced skirt, in taffeta with pinked edged ruffles, she wears an elegant fitted paletot with facings of quilted taffeta, its pagoda sleeves wider than usual to balance the width of the skirt. The crinoline of Queen Victoria’s trained ball gown [#TK] is modest in comparison, although the antique moiré silk is among the most sumptuous materials of the day.
