W
ill probably never know. What we can be sure of, however,
Tudor building, in his seminal
survey of Buildings of England, writing
tersely that it has a ‘pretended Jacobean
Façade’. This is certainly true, for the windows and blank-arched gables are ogee headed
rather than the more usual Gothic pointed. Half shut your eyes, and the building looks
older even than the Dutch it is most obviously
akin to, almost Turkish, and with a real stretch of the imagination, a hint of the Oriental can be detected. Often wonder, did the house’s architectural style originate. Whatever its
origin, the Hunting Lodge, as we see it now, is
a bit of an enigma. Could its ‘pretended’ style,
in fact, be a hangover from the preferred taste of centuries long past? Or is it one of the earliest, conscious revivals of Jacobean
decorative architecture, a period that was not to become fashionable again for 100 years?
