Founder of his eponymous label, Arthur Lasenby Liberty had been selling fabrics since the age of 16, when he began working with his lace-selling uncle. In 1875, he set up a London storefront, calling it Liberty & Co—Oscar Wilde was among the early customers. Liberty’s world-famous prints are still sold by the bolt in the haberdashery section of the famed London department store. Their eccentric spirit translated with ease to Target’s collection, where flower power exploded across dresses, bedding, utensils and garden tools—even a bright pink bicycle.

Psychedelic Fandom

With their distinctive, prismatic prints, Liberty fabrics quickly became a favorite of the 60s and 70s rock ‘n’ roll set, including miniskirt inventor and Mod Queen Mary Quant. Yves Saint Laurent made his first maxi dress from Liberty’s Macedonia pattern, and disruptor David Bowie— the High Priest of Pop—wore Liberty on the album cover of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. In 1994, designer Vivienne Westwood confirmed Liberty’s continued reign of cool, sending supermodels Karen Mulder and Naomi Campbell down her radical punk-meets-Victoriana runway in their prints.

From Sand to the Sky Built on a former elevated railroad line, New York’s High Line officially opened in 2009. It’s the only park in the city featuring an art program curated around its unique topography, with the goal of fusing art and ordinary life. In 2016, it played host to a special guest: a series of joyful, blob-like sculptures and bouncing Marimekko castles, all covered in fun Finnish prints ahead of the Target launch.

Big, Big World of Little Marina

Social media has an outsized presence in our modern lives—it’s quite different from the world of refined, considered craft the Missoni name represents. Which made Little Marina (a fictional fashion-blogger from Northern Italy) the perfect personality to launch the brand’s Instagram-friendly collection. Following mysterious blogs and tweets in the lead up to Fashion Week, Little Marina was finally unveiled as a larger-than-life, 25-foot doll with a giant smartphone—a VIP guest at Missoni’s celebrity-filled launch party. Brought to life “beyond the shelf” by an Academy Award-winning character effects studio, studioADI, she even looked up from her phone long enough to pose for a few selfies.

During the lead up to the Missoni for Target launch, Little Marina had plenty of interviews with fashion publications—even on Target’s website. Here’s an archival snippet from an interview with the world’s biggest fashion blogger. What has life beyond the shelf been like? Little Marina: A-MA-ZING. I mean, I went from a colorless existence of staring out the window to connecting to the world of fashion and other style obsessed dolls. I’m sure Fashion Week has been a whirlwind. Have you been able to explore New York City at all? It’s been an incredible whirlwind, and I’ve seen the coolest, most fashionable spots in the city like The Highline, Lincoln Center, SoHo, Union Square, Washington Square

Park, and the East Village. And, of course, during NYFW the most fashionable of the fashionable are out and about; wherever you turn there is someone looking fabulous. How would you describe your style? My style is a bit of everything—I’m a doll that LOVES fashion from lots of decades, from the flapper dresses of the 20s to the headband skirts of the 80s, and I think how I dress totally reflects this. But of course, I really love fashion today—especially anything Missoni! Bring on the multi-colored zigzag knit! Do you have any final fashion words of wisdom for girls that want to upgrade their style? Go sky-high with your style, like me! Don’t be afraid of bold color and print. Be a doll and dress up!
