Home workspaces are highly personal. By giving you an overview of Anne-Marie’s and my workspaces, located in our Brussels home, you’ll hopefully be inspired by our choices. We are fortunate to have the luxury of space to be able to organize our offices to suit individual needs—note that our desktop styles are quite different. Incorporate those elements that reflect your requirements into your private workspace. My studio is located near the attic. The space

has a slanted roof consisting of a skylight, which usually provides diffused overhead lighting. I rarely need to turn the lamps until evening. I use a leather-top desk with no drawers. My custom-made by Casamidy desk has been lined in thick saddle leather over a wooden base. The leather is a very pleasant surface to work on as it is never too cold or hot to the touch. The advantage of the slight cushiony textured surface is that you don’t need a mouse pad so I can place

Many of the available properties had been remodeled and this was reflected in their steep prices. Thanks to the assistance of a childhood friend, however, she learned of an unlisted six-story 1907 townhouse on Avenue Molière, a grand boulevard of embassies and private residences. The house had what Anne-Marie calls “beautiful volumes of space” and a long walled backyard garden full of shrubs and tall trees. It was almost too large for our needs but we started to think about how great the extra space would

the property along a ridge facing southeast. Sun streams through the windows and heats the veranda. Our family likes to experience sunsets while riding on horseback to the house. When planning the house, which Anne-Marie and I named Jamo, in 2013 , we decided to build a one floor structure. Living full-time in Belgium, we ironically turned the Flemish farmhouse as a prototype. Enamored by their charming pitched roofs, double-hung windows, and brick walls, we incorporated these elements but

painted our house white with green and black trim. The white walls and raw cement floors are practical as they enable us to spot unwelcome creatures. And, Flemish barns with haylofts inspired us to create a sleeping loft for the boys, reached by a ladder. Though they can easily scamper up the ladder to their tree house, it is a challenge for adults to ascend, especially if one is carrying something. A metal spiral staircase can solve this issue in the future. Multiple trestles, draped with rugs, serve as a wall. Our bedroom is directly below. Jamo’s builders were vaqueros
