This one is one of the first paintings I ever bought - the dress inspired my fashion company, Geminola. I paid it off at £100 a week until I owned it. I put it up and my three daughters would look at it and say, “Who’s that?”, and I’d say, “That’s your greatgreat-grandmother.” And for 15 years I forgot to tell them I was lying—my great-grandmother was probably from Mesopotamia 59

and would have been sat there in a yashmak. I just liked to imagine her like that painting. Then one day Jemima turned around, as an adult, and, in the middle of another conversation, suddenly said, “That’s not our great-great-grandmother, is it?” Every time the kids see it now they joke, “Oh, there’s granny over there.”
