A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2
There are some elements of the season that you will know and love, for example world-renowned orchestras including the London Philharmonic and Staatskapelle Dresden. However, we also have some surprises in store! A personal highlight for me will be Dawn Upshaw with The Andalucian Dogs and The Brodsky Quartet. This concert will take place in our fantastic venue, the Old Fruitmarket, a first for the International Classical Season and an ideal venue for such a unique and extraordinary performance – come along and prepare to be amazed. The concert is one of a series of collaborations with The Brodsky Quartet taking place during their International Fellowship at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Another exciting new departure is our Shostakovich weekend where you will be able to immerse yourself in the music of the composer for an entire two days – or just pick and choose the concerts which appeal most. The season will also celebrate two key anniversaries – Purcell 350 and Messiaen 100. I’m sure you will agree that it is quite a coup that on the centenary of Messiaen’s birth we will present the talented English pianist and Messiaen expert, Peter Donohoe, in the world-renowned acoustics of City Halls.

The Orchestra recently celebrated its 125th anniversary and was originally founded to perform in the Royal presence, although in the early 20th-century it was permitted to perform at commercial concerts for the general public. It was Evgeny Mravinsky who joined the orchestra in 1938 who is largely credited with transforming it into one of the best orchestras in the world over his 50 year tenure. Current Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Yuri Temirkanov is also highly regarded: “…under Mr

Acclaimed pianist Elisso Virsaladze performs regularly both individually and in chamber music and with orchestras she has toured North America, Japan and Europe extensively.
“Throughout, the playing (five stars for the brass) was icily majestic; the final destination never out of sight.”
Having received her first piano lessons in her native Georgia from her grandmother, Professor Anastasia Virsaladze, she is recognised today herself as an exceptional teacher. Moscow Conservatory and Munich Musikhochschule have made Virsaladze a regular professor and there is hardly any important international competition where she has not been invited to take part in the jury.
THE TIMES

Its literally record-breaking discography boasts well over 500 entries and it is particularly well-known for its Mozart recordings. The group has also played on the film soundtracks of Amadeus (1984), The English Patient (1996) and Titanic (1997). As well as being the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world, it also maintains a busy schedule of international touring.
Having begun his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Derek Wyndham, Peter Donohoe then travelled to Paris. He had always loved the work of Messiaen and was delighted to be able to study there with him and his wife Yvonne Loroid. Photo: Mike Hoban
Donohoe is acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time - mainly for his musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique.A romantic and highly charged player, he has been an annual visitor to the BBC Proms for seventeen years and has also appeared at many other festivals including six consecutive visits to the Edinburgh International Festival.
British clarinettist, Michael Collins is one of the world's leading woodwind players. His dazzling virtuosity and sensitive musicianship has led to a varied career performing as an orchestral player, chamber musician, soloist and director of his own ensemble, London Winds. More recently, Collins has developed his portfolio of work to include directing orchestras such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, City of London Sinfonia and Johannesburg Philharmonic.

Events will pay tribute to his singular and creative personality, his poetic and spiritual world, his revolutionary vision in many paths and to his fertile pedagogy. The composer came not from any particular ‘school’ or style but formed and created his own totally individual musical voice taking rhythmic ideas from India, ancient Greece, the Orient and most importantly adapting the songs of birds from around the world.

Following the critical acclaim and worldwide success of the New London Consort’s production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, seen here in Glasgow as part of our International Classical Season in 2007, this is a rare opportunity to see the ensemble’s stunning reconstruction of the early 18th-century Lincoln’s Inn Field’s Theatre revival of Purcell’s masterpiece.
Known for their acclaimed recording of Shostakovich’s 15 String Quartets, The Brodsky Quartet are at the forefront of the international chamber music scene. Elvis Costello with the Brodsky Quartet
Dawn Upshaw with the Andalucian Dogs and the Brodsky Quartet
Highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Elvis Costello joins the internationally renowned Brodsky Quartet for an evening to celebrate their longstanding collaborative link. The programme will include pieces from their hugely successful recordings - The Juliet Letters and Moodswings, alongside new material built up over the last fifteen years.
“Upshaw's performances are the stuff of legend.” LOS ANGELES TIMES
Golijov was inspired by the striking voice of the four-times Grammy award winner and composed this magnificent songcycle especially for her.Tonight she will be joined by the highly acclaimed Brodsky Quartet in the third of their unique series of concerts with us.
The Brodsky Quartet are known both for their love and mastery of the classical quartet repertory, as well as their pioneering collaborations with a diverse range of performing artists, which has given them an unrivalled opportunity to influence and inspire some of the newest work for string quartet.
The Andalucian Dogs are a hand-picked group of star performers brought together from three continents to perform this very special work.Together with Dawn Upshaw, the band’s original line-up premiered the piece at Zankel Hall in New York, the recording of which went on to receive a Grammy award nomination.
The Juliet Letters was a unique creative partnership between Costello and the Quartet, fusing pop sensibilities with chamber music, and inspired by an Italian professor's decision to reply to the many thousands of letters written every year to Shakespeare’s fictional Juliet. Costello also contributed vocally to the Quartet’s expressive album Moodswings.
In 2007 Upshaw was named a Fellow of the MacArthur Foundation, a prestigious award commonly referred to as the “genius grant” which noted her as “stretching the boundaries of operatic and concert singing and enriching the landscape of contemporary music.”
**** “…the singer and his collaborators have created something that is as accomplished as it is moving.”
Golijov’s recently completed projects include Azul, a cello concerto for Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony, and the composition of the soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola’s recent film Youth Without Youth.

One of Norway’s cultural mainstays, the NCO’s international breakthrough came with the 1979 release of Grieg’s complete works for string orchestra. This evening they will delight the audience with the well-loved Holberg Suite by the native Norwegian composer and pianist. Andsnes also famously toured the US with the NCO, playing and conducting Mozart from the keyboard and The Observer hailed him as “the perfect 21st-century ambassador for Mozart.” The orchestra has performed in many of the world’s most distinguished concert halls, often together with some of the world’s most renowned musicians. The Staatskapelle is steeped in tradition and has been a leading ensemble throughout various musical eras. It is in fact unique in having been in continuous existence for over four and a half centuries, and in 2008 it will celebrate its 460th jubilee. The line-up for this spectacular closing concert of our International Classical Season is completed by talented French violinist Renaud Capuçon. He has established himself as a soloist at the very highest level and International Record Review recently declared “Not since the emergence of Vengerov and Repin has such an exciting young violinist come my way”. Having recently performed with both the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, he makes a very welcome return to Glasgow following glowing reviews.
