Dance House Programme

SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2008

WELCOME Well I am still waiting for summer to truly arrive and I fear my wait ain’t going to bring no sunshine, so just as well our fabulous new programme has brought me lots of brightness over the last few weeks as I have finalised our new line-up for you. Inside you will find our biggest selection of courses and classes ever and I can’t contain my excitement at our great news that has made this possible. In September a fabulous new venue for the arts will be unveiled as Sounds of Progress take up residence in the Trongate and we get to fill their glorious upstairs space with dance. When I first turned the corner into this space I quite simply gasped, as it is large and bright and airy, and I immediately felt compelled to leap into grand jetés across the room. Sensibly I restrained myself in the company of the council official, but instead got busy figuring out what classes I could fit in. So leap inside and find out what dance treats I have lined up for you there. Do look out for icon dotted throughout the programme which highlights all the new courses on offer for the autumn and you will find even more P icon dots to make it easier for those that just want to drop into a class. We have laid on extra Ballroom, Hip Hop, Pilates

and Tango to keep up with demand and I’m delighted to offer our first Bollywood course which joins my line-up of new movement ‘related’ courses. What better way to develop your vocal skills than with movement; our shiatsu bodywork course will ease out any knots and tensions; or let some gentle dance moves help you regain strength and fitness in our fab new post pregnancy class. Our DANCE HOUSE@LARGE programme opens with a couple of events for the Merchant City Festival - another Barefoot Boogie for all those smitten by the barefoot bug and we expand our popular exclusive Burlesque sharings into a full blown extravaganza, where Sorcha (our wonderful administrator) gets to escape the office to dance in the premiere of Gypsy Charms new choreography for Dance House! October sees another chance for wee ones to hit the dance floor early with the fantastic We Dance wee groove and we have a great screening lined up for the next re:surface to coincide with the visit from America of award winning dance film maker Douglas Rosenberg, who also leads our main professional training event this term. Our Creative Labs are as varied and diverse as ever - always a treat to share in the early stages of new ideas and work emerging. And last, but not least, we finally bring you the Dance House Christmas Extravaganza. So hit those classes, find our special performance courses on P 5, 6 &12 and start polishing your razzmatazz and sparkle. I for one need to be dazzled by some dance in the absence of sunbeams! Karen Wood, Creative Director

Mondays 15 Sep - 1 Dec | 19.30 - 21.00 @ SCOTTISH YOUTH THEATRE £103 (£85) | General Level

Contact Improvisation is a movement form which explores the dance that can evolve between two or more bodies moving together in physical contact. This course will introduce the main elements of Contact Improvisation such as giving and receiving weight, and falling and lifting to create dance that can be soft and meditative or athletic and acrobatic. You will learn to be aware, playful, responsive, sensitive, acrobatic, poetic, meditative and to play with unpredictable outcomes – all this makes it much more than a dance form.

A great opportunity to hone your movement skills with exploration of body-movement in space and time and improvised compositions. This course is for dancers, actors, physical performers and anyone with dance practice who is interested in developing ways to observe dance and choice, body-mind skills and responses to the endless possibilities arising in the moment. This practice is connected to life as much as to art and dance. An open mind and playfulness is what you need to bring with you to this class! At the end of term we will have an informal studio sharing of our processes in a short improvisation score.

This class is open to anyone who is interested in movement exploration and learning about this technique which informed all post modern dance and theatre forms of today.

You will need comfy clothes and bare feet.

PROFESSIONAL @ OPPORTUNITIES Dance House seeks to develop the skills and resourcefulness of dance artists and other arts professionals by providing training in creative, physical, personal and teaching skills. Its Continuing Professional Development Programme is designed to develop the skills of professionals who work in the dance sector by providing opportunities to network, train and develop within the arts. Special events and master-classes are programmed to develop skill levels and to cross creative boundaries. Once again we are delighted to support a diverse range of Creative Labs - some offering opportunities for dancers to be involved and our Friday Dance Cocktail is guaranteed to provide a fascinating and thoughtful start to your weekend. Check out Pages 17-19. As we are still recovering from our ‘intense’ Summer Intensive with its sell-out performance we have a slight change of focus this season with our main professional development opportunity. Several dance artists have requested Dance for Camera training - so to show we listen we have lined up a fantastic course with eminent American dance film maker Douglas Rosenberg and our own Abby Warrilow.

DANCE FOR CAMERA

TRAINING DANCE FOR CAMERA TECHNIQUES with ABBY WARRILOW Monday 20 & Tuesday 21 October | 10.00 - 17.00 @ CCA, 350 SAUCHIEHALL STREET, GLASGOW Workshop Fee: £20 (£15) | Booking: 0141 552 2442 These first two days of training will introduce a range of new techniques of filming and choreography and an understanding of the endless possibilities which dance for camera has to offer. The workshop will begin with a series of short warm-up and movement exercises followed by discussion of film style participants would like to create. A range of camera techniques will be taught and films produced from initial planning through to completion. Dance film maker and established Director/ Choreographer, Abby Warrilow works primarily in commercials and music video. Abby’s directing talent has flourished while her choreography career has seen her work on the sets of major feature films, theatrical productions and commercials. Abby studied dance and film in parallel and has used her academic experiences in New York, Brighton and London, to great effect in her work. www.cagouleproductions.tv

Wednesday 22 & Thursday 23 October | 10.00 - 17.00 @ CCA, 350 SAUCHIEHALL STREET, GLASGOW Workshop Fee: £20 (£15) | Booking: 0141 552 2442 This workshop will explore moving beyond the single screen and into the area of projected bodies in live space (The Active Stage), multiple screen installation, “talking dance films” employing first-person narrative and other extensions of screendance into the area of time based art practice. Screendance festivals generally support short form dance films. However, there is a growing trend toward expanding the definition of dance on screen toward a more performative model. This fertile area of practice has links to performance and video art as well as multi-media dance theatre and video installation. This workshop will focus on methods for creating multi-dimensional screen performance beyond the single screen dance film model. Douglas Rosenberg is professor of Video/Performance/ Installation at the Art Department, University of WisconsinMadison, USA. An EMMY nominated director and the recipient of the Phelan Art Award in Video, he is wellknown for his collaborations with choreographers including Molissa Fenley, Sean Curran, Ellen Bromberg, Joe Goode, Li Chiao-Ping, Eiko & Koma and others. His work in video and video installation has been shown both in the United States and internationally in museums, galleries, on public television and in festivals around the world. Douglas is the director of the American Dance Festival Dance on Screen programs and conferences. He has received numerous grants and awards and has been artist in residence at The Institute for Studies in the Arts, Bates Dance Festival, and Buenos Aires International Festival of Video Dance. His writing on dance for the camera has been published in journals, including LEONARDO, and he is currently at work on a book addressing the theory and practice of dance for the camera. He was the Director of American Dance Festival’s video archival program for over a decade and continues to direct ADF’s Dancing for the Camera Festival. www.dvpg.net Prospective participants are asked, if they have their own laptop (Mac with Final Cut Pro) to bring it along to the workshops.

CREATIVE LABS Monday 15 – Friday 19 September

GYPSY CHARMS @ TRONGATE Burlesque is a form of performance art that encompasses a multitude of elements, from parody and social commentary to striptease and glamour. While its elements lie in Music Hall and Vaudeville, Burlesque is often regarded as its poor and less socially acceptable relation. Teaching Burlesque for Dance House since 2005, Gypsy Charms has strived to combine the riskier elements of new Burlesque with the narrative based parodies of the genre, towards social acceptance with regards to an often misunderstood genre. This lab will explore the elements central to creating a 21st century Burlesque. No sharing on 19 September. Monday 22 – Friday 26 September

ROOM 2 MANOEUVRE @ TRONGATE Room 2 Manoeuvre is headed up by Tony Mills. This residency will be the start of an investigation into what kinds of relationships we may have with our TVs and reasons for watching it - escapism, education or just for company. “TV kid!…that’s what my dad used to call me and rightly so because I was chained to the box when I was younger.” TV permeates all our lives in one way or another. What are the idiosyncrasies that develop while we watch it and what do we miss out on, if anything, by engaging with it? (NB. times may vary for viewers in Scotland!) Monday 29 September – Friday 3 October

TARA HODGSON @ TRONGATE For the last two years Tara has enjoyed collaborating with other like-minded creators, experiencing various performing disciplines throughout Europe. She has worked with Juha Marsalo, Martin Hug, Aye Productions and recently a solo for Tabula Rasa Dance Company. In this lab she will further develop her work

17

‘Dark Spaces’, exploring new avenues with musician Toby Shippey, to portray the extreme realms of the unconscious. Hopes, fears, desires and imagination made flesh is their challenge. Working with only four limbs and a brain Toby will attempt to tame the combination of early acoustic musical instruments and primitive technology to provide a suitable score for Tara. In dark spaces, dark psyche evolves! Monday 6 – Friday 10 October

CAROLINE BOWDITCH & CLAIRE CUNNINGHAM @ CCA IN THIS SKIN Dancers/choreographers Claire Cunningham and Caroline Bowditch will spend a week exploring movement, sharing stories/sharing movement, exploring stories - maybe even sharing skin - to discover what it is to be in this skin or to discover what lies under this skin. Caroline Bowditch is a performance artist and choreographer, originally from Melbourne, who has just taken up post as Scottish Dance Theatre’s Dance Agent for Change. Claire Cunningham is multi-disciplinary performer who moved into exploring dance and aerial work in 2006 as a result of a Creative Scotland award and has recently expanded into choreographic work through the creation of a series of solo works. Monday 13 – Friday 17 October

BRIAN HARTLEY @ TRONGATE We Dance, wee groove was conceived as a highly interactive live dance & music event for young children and their parents and carers. Following the success of the show at this year’s Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival, Brian (Director of We Dance, wee groove) will further explore the potential of this collaboration between dance (both choreographed and improvised) and a dj, live music and percussion, projected moving visuals and lighting. During the week Brian will involve dancers and musicians to research and explore themes emerging in the work: interactivity; participation; performance; rhythm; visual awareness in relation to early years development and learning & responding to children’s movements in parallel to dancer’s responses.

CREATIVE LABS The research week will be open to allow dancers to participate in the work. Participants should have experience with dance, and/or an interest in dance and movement for children. It will present an opportunity for professional development and opportunities to be involved in future performance events as We Dance, wee groove evolves. To apply please e-mail your CV and a brief statement on why you would like to take part to: info@stillmotion.co.uk by 6 October 2008 Monday 20 – Friday 24 October

TRIBU FLAMENCA @ TRONGATE FLAMENCO – FINDING A WAY HOME This lab will be a journey of three dance artists, Linda Skakel, Angie Dight & Madira Gregurek, coming together from different dance backgrounds and varying levels of Flamenco experience. True Flamenco is not an extravaganza that has us sitting comfortably in our seats. It is not always beautiful. It requires risk and laying bare the soul. It is about a deep commitment to each movement that, when executed with absolute dedication brings a nerve jangling moment of shared truth. What does this take? How do we get there? Why is it relevant? In this lab the dancers, bringing their different perspectives, will explore these questions, challenge ways of moving & being to find what makes it “Flamenco”? Who is Flamenco? When are we “in” it and when is it other? They aim to explore the cathartic elements of Flamenco - the transformation from tragedy to joy and will also begin to explore ideas for developing performances that are non-site specific. Monday 27 – Friday 31 October

JON-LEIGH CASSELLS & LISA SINCLAIR @ TRONGATE Fire dancing is one of the most ancient forms of movement and expression in the world encompassing many different cultures and art forms. Contemporary fire performance focuses primarily on three fire arts - Poi from the Maori tribes of New Zealand, Firestaff from South-East Asia and Fire Fans from China and Korea. However modern fire performance takes place in a very different environment and borrows from not only these ancient arts, but from a vast array of artforms and movement techniques. Working with dancer and choreographer Lisa Sinclair, Jon-Leigh will explore the traditional techniques and movements of

fire performance and how they can be adapted for use in a contemporary urban environment. The pair will team up with a local Parkour performer and street acrobat and this lab will take place in both a studio environment and on the streets of Glasgow. This collaboration is part of an ongoing media project by Bright Night International. If you are a performer, photographer or film maker interested in being a part of the project please contact: jl@brightnightinternational.com Monday 3 – Friday 7 November

ELBOW ROOM @ TRONGATE Building bridges between Authentic Argentinian Tango and Contemporary Dance Theatre is at the heart of this new work in which Elbow Room Artistic Director, Ani Tchakmakdjian collaborates with Tango dancer Martin Espindola. The resultant sensuous, physical duet which is dramatically intense and aesthetically rewarding will be further explored in this residency. What possibilities are inherent as the dance slips and slides between these two worlds? The dancers will explore both disciplines, stir up and reinvent rules and pathways, to create a map of choices to dialogue with. Which direction will they then choose to follow? Or are there many that demand pursuit in this intimate duet relationship as it develops it’s own unique voice? Monday 10 – Friday 14 November

WHITE GROUP @ TRONGATE During this Creative Lab Davina Givan and Errol White will explore the relationship between choreographer and composer and how the dynamics of this relationship effects the

18

CREATIVE LABS development of new vocabulary from a physical, emotional and intellectual perspective. Working with Portuguese composer Tiago Cerqueira, the aim of this week will be to develop an original sound score capable of supporting Errol’s own physical signature and subsequently its vocabulary providing, as choreographer, audible landscapes for one to engage with. Monday 17 – Friday 21 November

HELEN CUINN @ TRONGATE A curl springs forth from the bonny babe’s head, The hair on my head is dead, my love, the hair on my head is dead. What about brown or blonde instead? Oh the hair on my head is dead. The life fire that burns so red, so red, Oooh the hair on my head is doornail dead, the Hair on My Head is Dead!

Reasonably attached to her flame red locks, Helen sets out to explore the relationship between a person and their hair. “I know people often make judgements on my character based on my colouring. I know that ‘gingers’ are the last bastion of slagging in ‘a world that has gone mad for political correctness’. I know I am meant to be angry or sexy or fiery or witchy or weird.” Helen will use this lab to grind up ginger nuts, play with rusty nails, and doff some See You Jimmy bunnets in an attempt to put her image under the microscope. In the finale, she will try to remove herself from her hair.

Monday 24 – Friday 28 November

CAT CASBON @ TRONGATE Suffering from claustrophobia for as long as she can remember Cat’s worst nightmare is to be trapped in her own body. During this residency she will explore diseases such as Muscular Sclerosis, the physical effects and also the mental. How do you communicate the movement you still have in your mind, when it can no longer be a physical reality? This will inform the beginnings of a mixed media solo using live dance and film. Monday 1 – Friday 5 December

ANNA KRZYSTEK @ VIVACE THEATRE SCHOOL During this lab Anna will continue to develop her sequence of choreographic acts, first begun in an earlier Dance House Lab. FIGURE THIS, the third in her series of solo pieces, following on from TEST and STILL, will premiere at Tramway in March 2009 as part of the New Territories Festival. Supported by Scottish Arts Council - Choreographic Fellowship Award. VIVACE THEATRE SCHOOL, Studio 410, Templeton on the Green, 62 Templeton Street, Glasgow G40 1DA

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES@ MOSSYARD IMPROVISATION NIGHT AND DAY

| Tuesday 16 & Wednesday 17 September

As a development from the recent Dance House Creative Lab, Sarah Jackets (dancer and digital artist) invites you to take part in a night and day dance improvisation through the landscape at Mossyard in Dumfries and Galloway. Mossyard is a tombolo. At low tide a vast sandy beach connects to a rocky outcrop interspersed with shell beaches. At high tide the sea rises from both sides leaving a sandy causeway to the islets. The nature of this space presents an ever changing, time based theatrical landscape. The surrounding vista poses little in the way of obvious man-made intervention allowing the possibility of an uninterrupted mental and physical connection to this wild environment. This somewhat alien landscape presents a challenging environment to the dancer. Tidal waters, sand, rock and weather patterns provide unusual parameters for spatial experimentation within surfaces, texture, and articulation of the body. Taking part is free and free basic accommodation is available. If you are interested, please contact Dance House at professional@dancehouse.org with a brief outline of your experience and interest. For more information, please visit www.sarahjackets.net
