TREAT YOURSELF Doesn’t life feel a bit dreary at the moment? With all this talk of the credit crunch and the weather being dull, it can seem that there is precious little to get excited about these days. In Britain, we also work amongst the longest hours in Europe so we don’t tend to take as much time for ourselves as we should. So now is the time to stop and ask yourself, when was the last time you treated yourself to a really nice night out? Forget work, forget your stresses and get your work/life balance back on the right track by coming out and enjoying some great music at Glasgow’s Concert Halls. Experience live music the way it’s meant to be heard – in one of our fantastic performance spaces where the music and your soul can soar together in a truly uplifting experience.

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall Built in 1990 for Glasgow’s reign as European City of Culture, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall sits proudly in the heart of the city centre at the intersection of two of the busiest streets in Scotland. It has proven not just to be “Glasgow’s Hall for Glasgow’s people” as the then Lord Provost Pat Lally proclaimed it, but has also become a must visit stop on the cultural trail in Glasgow for music lovers from around the world. Home to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra the Hall is a multi–purpose venue, presenting a varied programme of events, including music and cultural events, exhibitions, meetings and conferences.
The adjacent category A listed buildings have recently undergone a £15million redevelopment, merging them into one of the most versatile, state of the art venues in Scotland, with a range of facilities accommodating events from 20 – 1,400 guests and an overall site capacity of up to 3,000. The complex has bespoke education spaces, state of the art broadcasting and recording facilities, an IT suite and first class backstage facilities. There are two main auditoriums alongside four smaller venues. Now known as Glasgow’s Centre for Music, the complex is home to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and is the regular Glasgow performance base for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Ensemble.
The largest performing space is the Main Auditorium, which seats 2,000 when all areas are in use. With a state of the art computer-controlled stage with up to 20 combinations, the Hall can accommodate every type of performance from the largest symphony orchestras to intimate solo shows.
“Best of all, it still sounds magnificent. It’s a place, I’m sure, where lives will continue to be transformed by music.”
“Anyone familiar with the Glasgow way of things will know the buzz that greets you the moment you enter the venue.” The Scotsman
City Halls At the centre of Glasgow’s new ‘cultural quarter’ in the Merchant City, City Halls has a long and illustrious past. Dating from 1841, City Halls is the oldest purpose built performance and meeting space in Glasgow. Of a Neoclassical Italianate design, the Grand Hall is a lavishly decorated formal auditorium, with world-renowned orchestral acoustics, raked seating and balcony.
BBC Music Magazine
Old Fruitmarket In the same complex as City Halls is the historic Old Fruitmarket. With its lofty vaulted roof, listed cast iron columns and balcony, this venue is perfect for concerts and events of almost any style. Always a much loved concert hall in Glasgow, the improved facilities have transformed the Old Fruitmarket into a truly multi-purpose venue. Since reopening in January 2006 the Old Fruitmarket has played host to pop, rock, folk and jazz concerts, comedy gigs and theatre events as well as club nights, banquets and ceilidhs.
“Also within the complex is the characterful Old Fruitmarket, whose Victorian wrought iron balconies, ancient shopfront signs and Glasgow street atmosphere give it the feel of a Dickensian stage set.” The Observer

Glasgow’s Concert Halls | 11
Every note, every movement and every performance Glasgow’s Concert Halls has the pleasure of hosting the best in home-grown and international classical music talent. From the symphonic proportions of the Main Auditorium at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, to the world-renowned acoustics of the Grand Hall at City Halls, via the unique atmosphere of the Old Fruitmarket, classical concerts really are what we do best. As well as hosting our very own International Classical Season, Glasgow’s Concert Halls is the home of Scotland’s two major symphony orchestras; the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at City Halls. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra also uses City Halls as their permanent Glasgow performance base throughout the year. The International Classical Season kicks off in October with two big name orchestral concerts: Gennadi Rozhdestvensky conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra with solo pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet to open the season, closely followed by Yuri Temirkanov with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and solo pianist Elisso Virsaladze. We also welcome clarinettist Michael Collins who will perform a world premiere of a concerto by Mozart with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields – how can it be a world premiere? Well, the concerto in question is usually played on the violin! A recital by renowned English pianist, Peter Donohoe, follows on the centenary of Messiaen’s birth, with a concert celebrating the music of this great 20th-century composer.
Later on in the International Classical Season, the orchestral highlights continue with Leif Ove Andsnes with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, performing a wonderful programme including Grieg’s breathtaking Holberg Suite. And to round off the season we have the astoundingly talented young conductor Daniel Harding with the Staatskapelle Dresden and French violinist Renaud Capuçon. In between the big name orchestras, the International Classical Season features a semi-staged production of Purcell/Eccles’ Dido and Aeneas with the New London Consort conducted by Philip Pickett and directed by Jonathan Miller, and also ventures again into chamber music in the form of The Brodsky Quartet who perform alongside Elvis Costello in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and in a second concert with super-star soprano Dawn Upshaw and the Andalucian Dogs in the Old Fruitmarket for a spectacular performance of Golijov’s modern masterpiece – Ayre. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra want to whisk you off on a voyage, with a season of music inspired by the ocean from composers as diverse as Wagner, Sibelius, Glazunov, Debussy and Vaughan Williams. As well as music of the ocean, the orchestra are looking forward to two vocal treats – the first when Dame Felicity Lott sings Poulenc’s La voix humaine, and the second when the RSNO Chorus and three international soloists perform Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust.
A mini-festival of Mendelssohn takes place in February with performances of some of the composers’ most popular pieces, including one concert featuring his Piano Concerto with internationally acclaimed soloist Stephen Hough and the complete music from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and another concert featuring his Violin Concerto with soloist Baiba Skride, conducted by Walter Weller. Stéphane Denève also indulges in two special concerts in March, featuring music composed in or inspired by the beautiful capital city of Paris, where Stéphane used to live. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra has divided its 2008/2009 Season at City Halls into a trio of tantalising themes; The Symphonic Collection, The Story Tellers and Russian Winter. The Symphonic Collection consists of six concerts featuring the most inspiring symphonies composed over the last two centuries, including favourites such as Beethoven’s 9th, Tchaikovsky’s 4th and Sibelius’ 5th. The Story Tellers is a series of five concerts featuring works by composers who have interpreted mythology, fairy tales and classic literature through their music; highlights include Rimsky-Korsakov’s spell-binding Scheherazade and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Russian Winter is the BBC SSO’s winter mini-series where, over five concerts, the orchestra will focus on the works of Rachmaninov and Stravinsky – two Russian composers of the 20th century who both produced phenomenal, but very different, music. Throughout the season the BBC SSO will be joined by an impressive line-up of conductors and soloists, including Chief Conductor, Ilan Volkov, who bids the orchestra farewell in this, his final season with the orchestra.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra present an eclectic season with three world premieres and three Scottish premieres as part of the “Adventurer” series, a five-concert celebration of Mendelssohn to mark the 200th anniversary of the composers’ birth and an extra special collaboration with internationally renowned Sarod-player, Amjad Ali Khan. Principal Guest Conductor, Olari Elts returns to conduct the orchestra on four occasions over the course of the season, and following the success of the SCO/Linn Records release of Mozart’s last four symphonies, the orchestra’s ever-popular Conductor Laureate, Sir Charles Mackerras, returns to conduct two Mozart Symphonies. The young conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin is also invited back following his successful debut with the orchestra last year. The Scottish Ensemble present a new season of five enigmatically named concerts – Red, Fire, Green, Quicksilver and Luminous. Looking beyond the titles you’ll find a mixture of world premieres, 20th century favourites and more traditional chamber music from Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Corelli and Biber. Launching the Scottish Ensembles season will be a concert featuring trumpeter Alison Balsom, and the talented young Scottish pianist, Alasdair Beatson. Season tickets are available for all of the seasons mentioned here. Call our box office on 0141 353 8000 to find out more.

Date/Time: Fri 17 Oct, 1pm Price: £4 in advance, £5 on the day Venue: Glasgow Royal Concert Hall Strathclyde Suite
Historian and former diplomat David Stafford has written extensively on espionage, intelligence and the Second World War. His latest book Endgame 1945 is a gripping and moving novel which tells the story of soldiers and civilians who are enduring the daily horrors and hardships of the aftermath of the war.
A book which looks behind the headlines of history, its strength lies in using ordinary men with ordinary voices. It shows that victory in Europe was not the end of the story as it only raised new problems. Would families be reunited? Would lives be rebuilt? Would freedom and democracy rise from the ashes?
