Dear friends, family, guests and more,
First of all, I want to thank you guys all for coming out to Korean Culture Night 2010. Korean Student Association (KSA) is an organization to bring together all individuals interested in Korean Culture through various activities such as community service, fund raising, and other events. Korean Culture Night is one of our biggest annual show and it was such an amazing experience for KSA and our executive board to be able to host such a great show and invite you all to a night to celebrate Korean culture again this year. Every single one of our staff, actors, performers, and KSA executive board members worked so hard to put this show together and to even make it happen, so please give them your undivided attention and warming rounds of applause. I’m so proud to present to you, Korean Culture Night 2010 and I hope you guys enjoy the show. A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER Dearest family and friends, On behalf of the Korean Culture Night cast and staff, it is my honor to welcome you to this year’s extraordinary production, Yaksok: The Promise. After organizing last year’s Korean Night that took place last April and seeing over 250 audience members fill the seats of Norton Hall’s Woldman Theater to capacity, I knew if KSA nominated me again to produce the show, I had to. Unlike last year’s Korean Night, our production this year is the embodiment of the collective talents and dedication of 70+ staff and cast whom dedicated their time to bring to life a modern interpretation of the traditional Korean folktale, “The Disobedient Frog” or “말 안 듣는 청개구리” – chaung-gae-gu-li). While the main focus of our production is about not taking the important things in life for granted, Yaksok: The Promise also integrates a number of Korean cultural performances, both traditional and modern, in a style that each scene seamlessly integrates. In developing the story for this year with my Director, Ozzy, we wanted to convey a message that everyone could understand, whether you were Korean, Hispanic, White, Black, whatever! Through our production this year, we hope that you will walk away with something valuable as well as an enriched cultural understanding for Korean culture. Without further adieu, it is my honor to present to you our blood, our sweat, our tears, and our joy.

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear family and friends One day Ray came up to me asking if I wanted to be a part of Korean Culture Night(KCN) he was organizing. I had to agree to him without knowing what responsibilities and duties were coming to me. We started to brainstorm the ideas together and came up with a story. This was October of 2009. We started to recruit staff one by one and currently we have about 70 staff and performers who are participating in this production. When we first gathered ideas, we were trying to introduce Korean culture to everyone, starting from taking shoes off in the house to food. The one thing I concentrated on the most was being able to communicate to everybody not just Koreans. I didn’t want some people to be missing out on a joke because it was said in Korean so I avoided using Korean words in the script. Everything is in English except for a few words, but they are described. This production is a result of our hard work. All of us dedicated many hours to this production. I thank you all the staff and performers for their hard work and I thank you all family and friends for coming to the KCN and I hope everyone enjoys the show.

ABOUT Korean Culture Night (KCN) is an annual culture show hosted by UB’s Undergraduate Korean Student Association (KSA) whose main goal is to promote and spread Korean cultural awareness. The goal of this event is to provide the Buffalo community a place to gather and celebrate Korean culture thru the form of a variety of cultural performances integrated into a theatrical performance that conveys universal themes that can be understood by all. After gathering the support and resources that the talented student body portrayed in organizing and performing last year’s Korean Culture Night [KCN] show in April 2009, the 2010 show hopes to utilize the same resources for a different style of show. The 2009 show attracted an audience of over 250 students, professors, and members of the Buffalo community while highlighting Korean culture in the form of a talent show with a variety of individual and separate acts. This year for our show we look to expand upon last year’s performances and integrate a number of cultural performances such as drumming, traditional & modern dances, and Taekwondo into a theatrical performance which ties together all of the separate pieces of the puzzle with a universal theme that can be understood by all.
SYNOPSIS This year’s Korean Culture Night at SUNY Buffalo is a modern adaptation of a Korean traditional folktale about a mother and a disrespectful son who disrespects his mother by always doing the opposite of what she says. The folktale, “The Disobedient Frog” (말 안 듣는 청개구리 – chaung-gae-gu-li) serves as this year’s foundation since the folktale teaches us valuable lessons that can be appreciated and understood by all. Amy is your typical high school teenager who has all the worries of the average high school student. Instead of realizing what is really important in her life, she only cares about practicing poongmul (traditional Korean drumming) to become part of a renowned poongmul pae (Korean drumming organization), and a promise that was made to her on her 18th birthday by her mother. As Amy’s story unfolds she meets John, a fellow student at her high school and immediately a “student-teacher” relationship is formed where Amy begins to question the importance of her priorities and the promise that was made to her. Throughout the evening, our show will incorporate performances such as traditional Korean drumming and Tae Kwon Do. The show will also integrate traditional Korean dances as well as a modern performance that hopes to provide a night of excitement as we take you through Amy’s journey.
