As Mayor, and on behalf of the citizens of Huntsville, I welcome each of you to the 25th AMIE Anniversary and Annual Conference being held in Huntsville. We are pleased that you have chosen Huntsville as your host City!

A special acknowledgement is given to those who coordinated this gathering. Many hours were spent preparing and planning to make this reunion a great success and our City benefits from those efforts.

While you are here, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the many sights and attractions Huntsville has to offer – among them are the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Botanical Garden and several other venues of interest. I would also like to invite you to visit Parkway Place Mall and the Bridge Street Town Centre to explore some of our best shopping and dining options.

The Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumni join me in welcoming one of the nation’s foremost organizations, one especially designed to further the participation of underrepresented men and women in STEM disciplines, to Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU). For more than 25 years, Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE) has carried a torch lighting the path to meaningful and longstanding careers in the multifaceted arena of engineering. The entire Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University Family is elated by the opportunity to host AMIE’s 25th Anniversary Conference in Huntsville, Alabama.

Commendations are also due to Dr. Chance Glenn, Dean of the College of Engineering, Technology and Physical Sciences, for providing leadership in the many months leading toward this event. Indeed, AAMU is a fitting host in that Dr. Arthur J. Bond, the man often credited as the “Father of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE),” served as our founding dean and the catalyst for our program.

Moreover, hearty congratulations and many words of gratitude are due to the AMIE team for its expert logistics and the meticulous details that only served to ensure this program’s success.

It is enlightening that the 2018 theme pays homage to partnerships. Generally, our successes on “The Hill” are linked to the strength of our partnerships and the unwavering dedication of students, faculty, staff and alumni. Further, the success of our engineering programs has resulted in our proud production of hundreds of civil, electrical and mechanical engineers, as well as technicians and closely related disciplines. We hope that you will enjoy your visit, as well as your remaining itinerary in “The Rocket City.”

Dear Honored Guests, It is my distinct honor and pleasure to welcome you to Alabama A&M University and to the College of Engineering, Technology and Physical Sciences to this auspicious occasion. On behalf of the college’s faculty and staff I would like to extend a warm greeting to you as you attend this event. We open the arms of hospitality as you step onto our beautiful campus and experience the mission we have to educate and prepare our students for an exceptional professional life.

At the core of AMIE’s mission lies the notion of providing opportunities for those who may not have it otherwise. This also resonates with our mission at Alabama A&M and in our college. The university is home to over 6,000 students, of which over 1,100 are enrolled in the College of Engineering, Technology and Physical Sciences. Our undergraduates go on to be employed with some of the best companies in the nation, some of which have been great supporters of AMIE and AAMU for many years.

If you are attending this conference then in one way, shape, or form you are in partnership together with all of us in this goal to advance minorities interest in engineering. We are blessed to be in the Huntsville region, rich in high tech enterprises based in academia, government, and private industry. It is therefore fitting that this 25th annual AMIE conference be here, in Huntsville, on the campus of Alabama A&M University.

Welcome Letters Greetings from the AMIE Chairman On behalf of the AMIE Board of Directors and member companies, I want to personally welcome you to our 25th Anniversary and Annual Conference and extend our thanks and appreciation to our host university, Alabama A&M University.

Twenty-five years ago, key leaders from Corporate and Governmental Communities, who had a vested interest in ABET accredited HBCU Engineering Schools, sat down with several HBCU’s Leaders and developed key strategies that would enhance their engineering programs. These stakeholders looked beyond the traditional recruitment and hiring programs and activities. They focused their efforts on long term measures that provide innovative academic programs of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to attract and graduate a greater number of minorities and women in engineering. AMIE was formed to fulfill this mission. Simply put, AMIE’s goal is to expand corporate, government, and academic partnerships to implement and support programs geared toward supporting underrepresented minority students in engineering careers.

Now it’s even more appropriate that our conference theme is “The Power of Partnerships: Celebrating the Past, Transforming the Present and Innovating for the Future” because our next critical steps require valuable stakeholder input and dedication to our mission. AMIE is committed to developing strategies that will increase workforce diversity and sustainable partnerships. Therefore, we are utilizing this conference as an opportunity to bring together all stakeholders that will further enhance our vision and mission and prioritize our key strategic objectives. So my call to action for this conference is simple – PROVIDE VALUABLE INPUT TO AMIE’S FUTURE SUCCESS. This can be accomplished by rallying around our recent accomplishments, getting to know the invaluable “HBCU Capabilities” with your visit to Alabama A&M University and discussion with conference attendees, understanding key AMIE Strategies and Objectives and being prepared to assist in the enhancements of these strategies that will assist with our focused short-term objective – Taking AMIE to the Next Level.

Welcome from the AMIE Executive Director Welcome to the 25th Anniversary and Annual Conference of Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE)! This year we celebrate 25 years of achieving diversity through partnerships. You will have the opportunity to interact with attendees to discuss best practices and approaches to help your organization in their efforts to increase diversity in the workforce.

Over 25 years ago, AMIE was created to represent a coalition of industry, government agencies and ABET accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Schools of Engineering who saw a diversified workforce as a competitive advantage and an essential business strategy.

Today, our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) represent less than 3 percent of the 300+ accredited engineering schools in the country and they graduate almost a third of minority engineers each year. A diverse workforce is within reach if strong alliances between corporations, HBCUs and government agencies are in place. AMIE is the organization that makes this happen. AMIE continues to act as a catalyst that forges Industry-Government/Academia partnerships that support programs to advance minorities’ interest in engineering.

This year’s conference theme is “The Power of Partnerships: Celebrating the Past, Transforming the Present and Innovating for the Future”. The conference will bring together the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, engineering professionals and leaders from top corporations and government agencies to discuss strategies to increase diversity in the workforce and develop sustainable partnerships. We will feature prominent speakers and inspiring roundtable discussions focused on Innovation, Technology, Research and Programs to attract, educate, graduate and place minority students in engineering and computer science careers.

Participants will also have the opportunity to help develop strategies to take AMIE to the next level as we focus on enhancing AMIE’s long-term mission and vision, prioritizing our key strategic objectives, developing strategies to increase diversity and operationalizing Best Practice exchange and Technology Transfer partnerships.

licia Boler Davis was named executive vice president, General Motors Global Manufacturing in June 2016. Her responsibilities include leading GM’s global manufacturing operations, manufacturing engineering and labor relations organizations. She is a member of the GM Senior Leadership Team and reports to GM CEO and Chairman Mary Barra.

Prior to this assignment, Boler Davis was senior vice president, Global Connected Customer Experience since December 2014, where she led the company’s connected customer activities, including infotainment, OnStar and GM’s Urban Active personal mobility initiatives.

In February 2012, Boler Davis was appointed U.S. vice president, Customer Experience.

Later that year, her role was expanded to vice president, Global Quality and U.S. Customer Experience. Under her leadership, GM improved vehicle quality and fundamentally redefined customer care and its interaction with customers through social media channels and Customer Engagement Centers.

Previously, Boler Davis was simultaneously plant manager of the Michigan Orion Assembly and Pontiac Stamping facilities, as well as vehicle line director and vehicle chief engineer, North America Small Cars, positions she held through January 2012. Prior to that, she was plant manager at the Lansing, Mich., Consolidated Operations and Arlington Assembly in Texas, where she was the first African-American woman to be a plant manager at a GM vehicle manufacturing plant.

Boler Davis began her GM career in 1994 as a manufacturing engineer at the Midsize/ Luxury Car Division in Warren, Mich. During her career, she has held many positions of increasing responsibility in Manufacturing, Engineering and Product Development.

Numerous organizations and publications have recognized Boler Davis for her professional accomplishments and community service. Of note, in late 2017 Boler Davis was named the prestigious 2018 Black Engineer of the Year. In addition, Automotive News named her its 2017 All Star in Manufacturing. In 2013, Fortune magazine named her as one of the 10 most powerful women in the automotive industry. In 2010, Automotive News included Boler Davis in its list of the 100 Leading Women in the North American Automotive Industry. In 2016, Trumpet Awards named her Corporate Executive of the Year.

She serves on the board of directors at General Mills and Beaumont Health. In addition, she is a member of the Northwestern University McCormick Advisory Council and a board trustee of the Care House of Oakland County. Boler Davis also serves as Executive Liaison for the GM WOMEN employee resource group.

Boler Davis has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Northwestern University, a master’s degree in engineering science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from Indiana University.

ull Professor and Dean Emeritus, Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering, Morgan State University Prior to beginning his service as Full Professor and Inaugural Dean of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering at Morgan State University (1984–2016), Dr. Eugene M. DeLoatch completed twenty-four years of affiliation with Howard University in Washington, D.C. During his last nine years as Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Howard, he led a Department that granted baccalaureate degrees to more African American engineers than any School in the country.

He is a baccalaureate degree holder in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (E.E.) from Tougaloo College and Lafayette College respectively. He also holds a M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the New York Polytechnic University. In recognition of his many years of effective service to engineering education, he has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by Lafayette College (1984), Binghamton University (2004) and Tougaloo College (2017).

During 2002-2003, Dr. DeLoatch became the first African American to serve as President of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), the world’s most populous and prestigious engineering education organization. He is a Life Member and Fellow of the Society which was founded in 1893.

Of his most cherished recognitions, DeLoatch lists the 2017 Black Engineer of the Year Award, the 2016 Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumnus Award, the 2015 AMIE Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2014 ABET Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity. In September, DeLoatch will become a 2017 National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee.

Among his many past activities was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Technology and Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO); an Associate Editor of the ASEE Journal of Engineering Education; Chairman of the Council of Deans of Engineering of the Historically Black College and Universities; and Co-Founder of the Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Program. Dr. DeLoatch is a member of Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society); Sigma Xi, (Scientific Research Society); and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He is also a member of the National Technical Association and the NAACP. A committed life member of the Tougaloo College Alumni Association, Dr. DeLoatch has served as National Alumni President and was named Alumnus of the Year in 1981. He was a member of the first class of inductees into the Tougaloo College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1992.

Dr. DeLoatch has given service to several study commissions and boards of the NAE, NSF, NASA and DOE. He has been a member of the Technical Advisory Board for the Whirlpool Corporation and the Scientific Review Board of the Lister Hill National Center at the National Library of Medicine. His research and development activities have been funded by a variety of agencies and companies including NSF, NASA, DOE, DoD, Army Corps of Engineers, ONR, Rockwell, Hughes, Lockheed Martin and the NIH National Cancer Institute.

Having spent more than a half century as an educator/researcher, DeLoatch remains committed to promoting education to young people with particular emphasis on individuals from groups that are underrepresented in the engineering profession. From 2010-2016, Dr. DeLoatch’s degree granting programs at Morgan State University led the Nation in the production of African American electrical and civil engineers at the baccalaureate degree level.

On June 29, 2016, Dr. Eugene M. DeLoatch received a personal letter from the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Hussein Obama congratulating him for being the “Best of the Best” in the field of engineering.

After 30 years of phenomenal and preeminent service to Morgan State University, as Dean of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering, he retired as Dean Emeritus on June 30, 2016.

r. Chance Glenn received his Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park. He then received his Masters of Science degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree, both in Electrical Engineering, from The Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. He also holds a certificate from the Management Development Program in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.

In August of 2012, Dr. Glenn became the Dean of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Physical Sciences at the Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Glenn returned to Huntsville after starting school at Alabama A&M years ago. He is now leading the college through its expansion to prepare students and researchers to meet the global needs of the 21st century. The Foundation’s mission is to create new opportunities for the region in research and development utilizing contract-based research and development. He has led large cross-disciplinary teams focused on meeting critical mission objectives. His current organization plays a critical role in the transformation of the architecture by planning for both the adoption of innovations and removal of legacy technologies from the architecture.

ichael Cox is Vice President Business Development executive for Raytheon Missile Systems Air and Missile Defense Systems. Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2017 sales of $25 billion and 64,000 employees, is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, civil government and cybersecurity solutions. Raytheon is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Cox is responsible for capture development and growth of the A&MDS suite of products including Standard Missile-3, Standard Missile-6, Kill Vehicles enterprise and Israeli Cooperative programs. He has primary responsibility for capture of the Missile Defense Agency future all-up round opportunity, leveraging relationships with MDA and the Office of the Secretary of Defense senior leadership.

Before joining Raytheon in 2017, Cox, who has a wide-ranging background leading space and missile defense programs with a focus on advanced aircraft, space and radar systems, was vice president of the Engineering Solutions sector of Parsons Government Services in Huntsville, Alabama. He has served as director of Missile Defense-Huntsville, for Northrop Grumman TASC and then as division director for the Huntsville region for TASC, Inc. In this capacity, he established the firm’s Huntsville Missile Defense office and provided management support to the Army Material Command, Space and Missile Defense Command, MDA and other Department of Defense programs associated with the region.

Cox had a 27-year career in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in September 2007 as a colonel (O-6).

He served as chief of the Missile Defense and Missile Warning Radars division at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. In this role, he led a System Program Office responsible for seven radar programs valued at $4.2 billion for the MDA, Air Force Space Command and Electronics Systems Command Taiwan radar foreign military sales. His office was responsible for managing, executing, testing and delivering a new national missile defense capability, the first to achieve full operational certification.

In previous positions, he served as chief of staff of the MDA Ground-Based Midcourse Defense program office in Huntsville with oversight of more than 2,000 personnel and as political-military affairs officer for Central Africa at Headquarters U.S. European Command with responsibility for implementing U.S. plans and programs for 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. As program manager of the Signature Technologies Office at the Air Force Research Lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, he led stealth technology development programs that led to improvements in combat effectiveness of the F-117, B-2, Joint Strike Fighter and F-22 aircraft.

He has received numerous awards, including the Defense Superior Service Medal and Program Manager of the Year Award of the Space and Missiles Systems Center. Cox holds a Master of Arts in procurement and acquisition management from Webster University and a Bachelor of Science in humanities with engineering minor from the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Prior to his current role, Mike worked at Sikorsky Aircraft for 4 years where he led Operations Strategy being responsible for Manufacturing Strategy, Facilities Management, Global Transitions, and Sikorsky overseas manufacturing.

Prior to Sikorsky, Mike had a 20-year career with Lockheed Martin where he was the Vice President of Operations for the Lockheed Martin Electronic Systems Business Area, where he was responsible for the Productions Operations, Supply Chain Management, Quality, Facilities Management, Lean Six/Sigma Process Improvement, and the Environmental, Safety and Health functions.

Prior to that role, Mike was the Vice President of Programs and Mission Success for Information Systems and Global Services, Program Excellence group. He and his team provided strategic and tactical expertise to the business area, including ensuring successful program performance, Mission Success, driving process improvements and providing program management support/best practices to the business units.

Previously Mike had also been the Vice President of Engineering and Technology for the former Lockheed Martin Information and Technology Services Business Area where he was responsible for engineering and program management processes as well as the focal point for their process improvement and technology activities.

Mike came from the Corporate LM21 team where he was a Subject Matter Expert in Program Management and Software Systems Engineering. He was also responsible for infusing Operating Excellence into the program management discipline throughout Lockheed Martin and also applying Lean and Six Sigma principles to Software Systems engineering.

Prior to his tour with LM21, he was the program manager for the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) at Lockheed Martin Information Systems in Orlando where he also served as Technical Director for the program. Before his work in Orlando, Mike spent several years in Valley Forge with Lockheed Martin Management & Data Systems where he worked as a systems engineer on classified programs and also served as the Integration Manager, followed by the Systems Engineering Manager for the Advanced Tomahawk Weapons Control System (ATWCS).

Before joining Lockheed Martin, Mike worked for several aerospace companies including Northrop where he spent seven years on the B-2 Stealth Bomber program serving as the Lead Avionics System Control and Architecture Engineer and also as manager of the Terrain Following and Flight Controls Systems Engineering group. He also worked for Grumman Aerospace in Long Island, New York, as an Integration, Verification and Validation Engineer on the A-6 Intruder and F-14D programs.

Mike previously served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE), as well as serving on the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) Selection Panel. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science in Physics.

ary Schneider has been in the technology industry since 1988, when he joined IBM as a software developer at the IBM Toronto Lab Database as a member of the DB2 development team. He was a member of the initial technology transfer team that first delivered DB2 on the Windows and AIX platforms in the early 90’s, porting the product from OS/2. During that time in Toronto he held positions with progressively increased responsibility within Development, Business Partner Enablement, Marketing and Business Development.

In 1999, he ventured into the entrepreneurial space, leading a startup technology company that specialized in digital media distribution using VPN (Virtual Private Networks) for in-store advertising. Key clients include Wal-Mart Canada and Wendy’s Corporation. The company won the Canadian Venture Fair as the best investment opportunity of the year in 2000.

In April 2001, he returned to IBM US, being named Worldwide Director of Channel Development, responsible for worldwide strategic alliances and technical enablement for IBM’s Information Management (IM) division under IBM Software Group.

In March of 2003, he was named Director of Linux Competitive Technology for IBM’s Information Management business. In this role, his organization had responsibility for IBM Data Management’s business strategy and execution on Linux, including alliances with Novell, Red Hat and other emerging Linux vendors and solutions providers.

In January 2006, he was appointed to the position of Worldwide Director of Field Technical Presales and Sales Enablement for Information Management, responsible for the Field Technical IM community, as well as overall sales training for all IBM seller communities on the IM portfolio.

In February 2010, Mr. Schneider accepted the role of CTO & Vice President of Technical Leadership for IBM’s Growth Markets Unit, based in Shanghai, China, responsible for driving technical sales, innovation, and technical & professional skills development across the eight growth market regions.

He is currently Vice President of Global Technical Sales, based in Armonk, New York.

Mr. Schneider has an engineering degree from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and an M.B.A. from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada.

Bryan Scott

ryan Scott is vice president of Integrated Quality for Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), based in St. Louis. In this role, Scott is responsible for Quality across the entire BDS organization including supply chain compliance and conformance of purchased products and services throughout the product life cycle. He also oversees the BDS build and delivery process through a focus on the value and excellence by which products are assembled.

Prior to his current position, Scott was the San Antonio Site Leader. He was responsible for day-to-day leadership of site operations including all production operations in both

Before moving to San Antonio, Scott served as director of Quality for Boeing Military Aircraft (BMA) in St. Louis, and also as director of BMA programs at the St. Louis site. This included oversight and implementation of Quality processes and best practices. It also involved working with external suppliers and customers to define, evaluate and communicate requirements and priorities through all phases of the product or service life cycle.

Jacklyn M. Wynn

acklyn M. Wynn, a vice president in the Center for Enterprise Modernization (CEM) at The MITRE Corporation, leads the organization’s work in support of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). CEM is one of seven federally funded research and development centers that MITRE operates for the U.S. government.

Wynn joined MITRE from RSA, the security division of Dell Technologies, where she was vice president for Strategy and Market Development, Global Public Sector. She developed and executed integrated cyber strategies through business process, coordination, and implementation of strategic projects and partnerships. Wynn also held executive leadership positions at Dell EMC, as vice president of Global Residency Practice, and at Hewlett-Packard, where she was vice president for Global Business Operations and Support Services.

Prior to her global roles, she spent over 15 years in executive leadership positions that oversaw public sector technology and consulting services divisions of several technology companies, such as Digital, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard. These divisions supported largescale enterprise infrastructures, from federal agencies like the VA and the U.S. Postal Service, to local and state governments, as well as institutions of higher education. In addition, the opportunity to participate in and support the internal optimization of the largest information technology and technology companies’ modernization efforts due to mergers and consolidations provided Wynn a unique perspective across change management, governance, strategy, and implementation outcome areas.

She has earned recognition for her leadership and performance as an advocate for community service and education programs for youth, with a strong focus on the science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Elaine S. Ward

laine Ward is a member of the generation of women leaders who broke down the barriers of gender and race – and then cracked the glass ceiling to take technical and business positions traditionally reserved for men. Elaine is currently the Technical Director of MITRE Corporation’s Technical Center for Enterprise Strategy and Transformation within the Center for Programs and Technology.

Elaine began her career by applying her love for computer science and engineering as an apprentice with the Naval Surface Warfare Center. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she worked for several government contractors and technology firms in the

Washington, DC area. At MITRE, she combines her experience in enterprise engineering and systems thinking on large-scale programs for federal defense and civilian agencies. She is known as an expert who determines the right mix of people, processes, and technology to solve critical issues of national importance. Elaine’s Technical Center includes a diverse group of ~225 strategists, enterprise engineers and architects, and change management specialists. They assist government agencies in transforming business and technical processes to meet the rapidly changing needs of the citizens they serve. One of Elaine’s key roles is making certain every person in her Technical Center can develop the competencies needed for their chosen career paths. She is a strong supporter of and participator in MITRE’s Mentoring and Diversity and Inclusion programs. Drawing from her interest in these initiatives, Elaine uses her leadership role to mentor and coach others.

She is also active in industry and academia. She is an editor of the first Practical Guide to Federal Enterprise Architecture, published by the Federal CIO Council, and is a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Journal of Enterprise Transformation, affiliated with the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). She was invited and participated in the 1st International Workshop on Enterprise Transformation at the Tannenbaum Institute at Georgia Tech. She currently serves on Linkage’s Board of Advisors for Women in Leadership. Lastly, she is an adjunct faculty member in Georgetown University’s Systems Engineering Management Masters in Professional Studies program.

In addition to her professional role, Elaine loves music and theater and enjoys a fulfilling family and social life. She and her husband are raising two talented daughters who are both working on their undergraduate degrees while they pursue their interests in dance and event planning. Derek McGowan

erek McGowan has been with Lockheed Martin since 2001. Lockheed Martin is a nation leader in Global Security, Aerospace, Systems Integration, Training, and Information Technology. The majority of Lockheed Martin’s business is with the U.S. Department of Defense and Federal Government agencies. He is the Program Manager for Higher Education Institutions Global Diversity and Inclusion.

Primary responsibilities include managing the multi-million-dollar portfolio for HBCUs. He drives the implementation of diversity and inclusion efforts in STEM programs, relationship building, student development and recruiting at Historically Black Colleges and Minority Serving Institutions (HBCUs and Minority Serving Institutions, MSIs). In this capacity he is responsible for strengthening partnerships and enhancing the diversity pipeline of technical talent, he ensures knowledge sharing, coordination, communication, assessment and enhancement of LM activities associated with HBCUs and MSIs. Mr. McGowan develops strategic plans for key programs while working as a business partner with LM executives, leaders, and team to develop a robust diversity and inclusion strategy and program.

Prior to his current role Derek was the LM Campus Relations Manager. He and his team managed a multi-million-dollar budget that directly impacted branding and recruiting for the multi-billion-dollar Corporation. He supported LM commitments to campuses, student organizations that impacted recruiting efforts at both regional and national

liver S. (“Bo”) Leslie began his engineering and business career after receiving his bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering technology from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL. Bo joined the McDonnell Douglas Corporation (now The Boeing Company) in 1972 as an electrical engineer. He worked in the Avionics Laboratory as a Test Engineer and later in Avionics Systems Engineering as a Lead Engineer, where he was responsible for the Communication and Navigation Systems on the F-15 Eagle Program. As Lead Engineer, he interfaced with the Department of Defense and McDonnell suppliers on a daily basis. Bo also served as a technical recruiter for the Engineering Division for 15 years. In the mid-90s, he represented McDonnell Douglas on a commission made up of professional engineers and educators who made suggestions to help strengthen the School of Engineering and Technology at Alabama A&M University. The commission was lead by Dr. Percy Pierre.

The Engineering Program at UMES was awarded initial accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in August 2013.

VSU targets the total development of students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and provides a wholesome academic environment in which students can study, learn, research and benefit from their interaction with its exceptional faculty. Virginia State University is committed to education on a personal level, and to public service, research, and economic and leadership development activities in the region, state and nation. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees. DARRYL A. STOKES Vice President, Transmission Operations & Planning Exelon Utilities Darryl Stokes is Vice President of Transmission Operations & Planning. He ensures the reliable operations of the transmission systems for all of Exelon’s utilities.

He oversees efforts to optimize the value of the company’s transmission functions, including control room operations, reliability planning and interconnection planning. Darryl is also responsible for alignment across the utilities for all functions that interface with Transmission Operations & Planning. Darryl is based in Baltimore.

Stokes has more than 35 years of experience with BGE. Throughout his career he has rotated through several technical and leadership assignments in key substation engineering and construction areas, transmission operations, human resources, project management, and engineering and standards.

In his former position, Stokes was Vice President of Electric Transmission & Substations. He was responsible for the safe and reliable operation of BGE’s electric transmission system, including transmission and substation construction, operation and maintenance, transmission control room operations, NERC Reliability Standards Compliance and PJM interactions. He continues to play active roles in engineering recruitment and development activities, and economic and workforce development initiatives through partnerships with area colleges and universities, local non-profits and governmental agencies. He has also served with several industry groups including Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES), Southeast Electric Exchange (SEE), and Baltimore Chapter of American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE).

Stokes is actively involved in civic and STEM related activities. He is currently Chair of Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE) and a board member of the Associated Black Charities, Humanim and the Baltimore Polytechnic Foundation.

He formerly served on numerous boards including Howard Community College Educational Foundation, Howard County Public Works Board, Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy, Maryland Business Roundtable Strategic Committee, Columbia Foundation and Leadership Howard County.

Stokes is married to Donna and they reside in Ellicott City, Maryland.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electric engineering from Northeastern University and a Master’s degree in Electric Power Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He is also a 1993 graduate of the Johns Hopkins Leadership Development Program.

AMANDA GOODSON Senior Manager, Program Management Excellence Raytheon Company Amanda H. Goodson is Senior Leader in Program Management Excellence. As Business Operations Manager, Staff Executive and Raytheon Emirates PMX director where she is responsible to drive strategy for PMX and to deploy an executable and sustainable business model for PMX for remote sites. Prior to her current role, she served in the PMX Accelerating Talent Directorate.

Before her PMX roles, she was Information Technology (IT) Customer Engagement at Raytheon Missile Systems. Before that time, Goodson was director for Process Integration where she influenced the IT support and services team to enable Raytheon international business growth objectives in support of a common Enterprise global solution to create a model for reuse, leverage expertise, and enable optimized common solutions across the Enterprise.

Prior to that role, Goodson was director of IT Governance and Information Assurance Directorate.

Prior to that role, Goodson was Quality and Mission Effectiveness leader for two Product Lines, where she served as technical interface for quality and mission assurance ensuring success of the products and services provided to a diverse set of customers.

Goodson is the vice chair for the Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering board of directors representing Raytheon.

Before to joining Raytheon in 2003, Goodson was appointed as NASA Senior Executive (SES), for Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama where she led an elite team of Agency experts responsible for assuring the safety of the space shuttle propulsion elements. She advanced to this position after serving more than 15 years with NASA, starting as an Aerospace Engineer and holding positions of increasing responsibility.

She leads AMIE as it develops strategies to expand corporate, government and academic partnerships to implement and support programs to attract, educate, graduate and place minority students in engineering careers and increase diversity in the engineering workforce.

Veronica has over 18 years of experience in process engineering developing Automated Assembly Processes and over 9 years of experience in Engineering Management and Human Resources managing Career Pathways Programs, Diversity Recruiting, Professional Development Rotation Programs, Interns/Co-op Programs and University Relations & Recruiting at Northrop Grumman Corporation. Veronica served as Senior Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton responsible for developing, managing and implementing firm-wide Strategies for University and Diversity Recruiting.

Veronica was awarded the 2007 Women of Color in Technology Award for Educational Leadership – Corporate Promotion of Education and the 2009 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Educational Leadership – Promotion of Higher Education for her passion and dedication to promoting STEM. Divisional Vice President, Operations Strategy & Engineering Abbott Laboratories Everett’s responsibilities span Division Engineering, Operations Strategy, Business Excellence, Facilities and Capital Planning, and EHS. He joined Abbott in January 2015, with a versatile background in global operations, engineering, supply chain, customer service and general management.

Everett began his career at an Edison Engineering Program graduate at General Electric (GE) and has held several positions at GE, Honeywell and Kimball Electronics. Most recently, he served as Vice President, Engineering and Operations for CAE Healthcare.

Everett has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Pennsylvania State University and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt.

LESLIE C. BRADLEY Senior Manager, Global Diversity & Inclusion (GDI) The Boeing Company Leslie C. Bradley is a Senior Manager, Global Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) for The Boeing Company. In this role, Leslie is a key leader of the GDI team with responsibility for overseeing the development and implementation of strategic diversity and inclusion plans and objectives in partnership with the vice president of Global Diversity & Inclusion and the Executive Diversity Council. Leslie also manages the enterprise HBCU strategy initiative within the company, leveraging multicultural leaders as a think tank responsible for championing change in mindsets, behaviors and systems impacting our progress in the acceleration of diversity within the enterprise. In addition to her primary role, she supports, collaborates and develops partnerships with Boeing’s extensive External Technical Affiliations portfolio which help accomplish the company’s technical, business, and talent objectives as well facilitate connections to the marketplace.

Leslie has more than 15 years of leadership experience with companies that include The Department of Defense, American Chemical Society and the U.S. Senate.

MATT LAVELLE Vice President of Operations Boston Scientific Matt Lavelle is a Vice President of Operations at Boston Scientific responsible for leading one of fourteen global manufacturing plants that leverages innovative technology to produce life enhancing medical devices.

Matt has over sixteen years of progressive leadership experience within Boston Scientific’s Global Operations function and has served as a Production Supervisor, Production Manager, Engineering Manager, Director of Production, and Multi-site Director of Materials prior to his current role. In his tenure with Boston Scientific, Matt has worked in three different locations and supported all six of the company’s business divisions.

Prior to joining Boston Scientific, Matt served as an Infantry officer in the US Army for six years in multiple assignment locations around the world.

In addition to serving on the AMIE Executive Board, Matt also represents Boston Scientific as a Board Member for the Indiana Medical Device Manufacturer’s Council, an organization committed to education and advocacy for Indiana’s medical device sector at the state and federal government level.

Matt earned a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington and a MBA in Operations Management and Finance from the University of Minnesota. He is married and he and his wife have one son..

Taborn was recognized for outstanding contributions to his field and the State of Maryland. He was one of three individuals to receive the award.

Taborn holds honorary degrees from Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.

DR. MARK D. VAUGHN Manager, Technical Talent Pipelining for Technology Community and Lead for the Technology Community Office of STEM, Corning Incorporated Dr. Mark D. Vaughn is Manager of Technical Talent Pipelining for Corning’s Technology Community and is the Lead for the Technology Community Office of STEM. In this role, Vaughn develops, implements and manages PK-20 science and engineering programs and initiatives in support of meeting the Technology Community’s near term and long term technical talent needs.

Dr. Vaughn began his 29 year career with Corning in 1988 as a Research Technician. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Alfred University, a Master of Science degree in Optics from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to his current role, Dr. Vaughn was a Research Associate in Modeling and Simulation where he was a noted expert in Optical Network Traffic Demand Modeling and Access Network Cost Modeling.

In addition to his primary role, Vaughn has served the Technology Community and Corporation in a variety of other ways including serving as an Innovation Black Belt, past chairman and co-founder of the Black Technology Network (an employee resource group that champions the contributions and careers of Blacks in the Technology Community) and project manager for Leadership Fundamentals for Program Managers, one of the corporation’s premiere leadership training experiences.

Dr. Vaughn is a native of Elmira, New York. He and his wife reside in Painted Post, New York and are the proud parents of 5 children, one son-in-law and one grandchild.

CATHERINE OKITE Sr. Advisor, IT HR Business Relationship Team DELL EMC Catherine Okite is currently the Sr., Advisor, IT HR Business Relationship team for DELL EMC where she partners with the business to manage internal demand of Dell’s IT services and manages enterprise implementation of HR systems. In this role, she is responsible for aligning process and technology improvement initiatives to the strategic priorities of the business, account management, business readiness, demand shaping, developing and maintaining strong relationships with senior level business stakeholders.

In addition to her IT Management role, Okite is the President of EMC’s Black Employee Affinity Group where she leads the corporate chapter in the implementation of innovative programs that help drive the effective assimilation of minorities into the company. Most recently, Okite developed and implemented EMC’s highly successful “Speed Coaching” program where corporate executives served as coaches to more than 400 participants.

Additionally, Okite co-chaired the development and implementation of EMC’s Historically Black College and University (HBCU) initiative building tight partnerships with HBCU Schools and Technical deans to bring minority students into coveted EMC summer internships. On April 26, 2016, EMC’s Black Employee Affinity Group received “NAACP Difference Maker Award” for doing exceptional work in the areas of recruitment and retention, developing a pipeline and community service.

Okite is a 17 year veteran of EMC and has held a variety of technology leadership positions across the company. In addition to her impressive EMC career, she held technology focused positions at Boston Architectural Center, Inc. Magazine, Bredy Network Management Corporation and the Boston Housing Authority.

A native of Kenya, Okite earned her undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems from Northeastern University and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and certified Project Management Professional. She is also an alumnus of the highly acclaimed Partnership Fellows program.

KEN BARRETT Captain U.S. Navy (Ret.), Chief Diversity Officer General Motors Corporation Ken Barrett became General Motors’ first Chief Diversity Officer in 2012. He has 14 years of executive experience, including five years of award-winning performance as the U.S. Navy’s Diversity Director, where he achieved historic levels of minority and female officer additions and transformational work-life balance initiatives.

Before joining GM, he served as the Under Secretary of Defense’s Acting Director, Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity. He began his career with the U.S. Navy in 1984, and after commissioning through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, he held positions in engineering and operations.

GARY MICHAEL SCHNEIDER Vice President, Global Technical Sales IBM Sales & Distribution Gary Schneider has been in the technology industry since 1988, when he joined IBM as a software developer at the IBM Toronto Lab Database as a member of the DB2 development team. He was a member of the initial technology transfer team that first delivered DB2 on the Windows and AIX platforms in the early 90’s, porting the product from OS/2. During that time in Toronto he held positions with progressively increased responsibility within Development, Business Partner Enablement, Marketing and Business Development.

In 1999, he ventured into the entrepreneurial space, leading a startup technology company that specialized in digital media distribution using VPN (Virtual Private Networks) for in-store advertising. Key clients include Wal-Mart Canada and Wendy’s Corporation. The company won the Canadian Venture Fair as the best investment opportunity of the year in 2000.

In April 2001, he returned to IBM US, being named Worldwide Director of Channel Development, responsible for worldwide strategic alliances and technical enablement for IBM’s Information Management (IM) division under IBM Software Group.

In March of 2003, he was named Director of Linux Competitive Technology for IBM’s Information Management business. In this role, his organization had responsibility for IBM Data Management’s business strategy and execution on Linux, including alliances with Novell, Red Hat and other emerging Linux vendors and solutions providers.

In January 2006, he was appointed to the position of Worldwide Director of Field Technical Presales and Sales Enablement for Information Management, responsible for the Field Technical IM community, as well as overall sales training for

all IBM seller communities on the IM portfolio.

In February 2010, Mr. Schneider accepted the role of CTO & Vice President of Technical Leadership for IBM’s Growth Markets Unit, based in Shanghai, China, responsible for driving technical sales, innovation, and technical & professional skills development across the eight growth market regions.

He is currently Vice President of Global Technical Sales, based in Armonk, New York.

Mr. Schneider has an engineering degree from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and an M.B.A. from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada.

SCOTT TRAPP Corporate Director of Diversity Outreach Global Diversity & Inclusion Lockheed Martin Scott Trapp is director of diversity outreach for Lockheed Martin Corporation. In this capacity, he is responsible for leading the Corporation’s corporate diversity and inclusion outreach strategies to grow relationships with strategic partners and help position Lockheed Martin as an employer of choice. His role incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) outreach and higher education initiatives as well as, talent sourcing and outreach and national diversity events.

Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, Mr. Trapp served in a variety of increasingly responsible positions at Public Service Enterprise Group in Newark, NJ, most recently as the director of talent acquisition and diversity outreach. In this role, his responsibilities included partnering with business leaders across the organization, outside constituents, such as state political leaders and diversity partners, to aide in developing recruitment strategies.

Mr. Trapp has more than 15 years of leadership experience with companies that include Exelon Energy Corporation, Association of Medical Colleges and the University of Maryland.

Mr. Trapp graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. He is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and is certified in Lominger Career Architect.

DR. EUGENE M. DELOATCH Dean Emeritus, Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering Morgan State University Prior to beginning his service as Professor and Founding Dean of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering at Morgan State University (1984–2016), Dr. Eugene M. DeLoatch completed twenty-four years of affiliation with Howard University in Washington, D.C. During his last nine years at Howard, he led a department that granted baccalaureate degrees to more African American engineers than any school in the

country. He has a baccalaureate degree in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (E.E.) from Tougaloo College and Lafayette College respectively. He also holds a M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the New York Polytechnic University. In recognition of his many years of effective service to engineering education, Dr. DeLoatch has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by Lafayette College (1984), Binghamton University (2004) and Tougaloo College (2017).

Dr. DeLoatch became the first African American to serve as President of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), the world’s most prestigious engineering education organization, during the ASEE’s 2002-2003 activity year. He is a Life Member and Fellow of the Society which was founded in 1893.

Of his most cherished recognitions, DeLoatch lists the 2017 Black Engineer of the Year Award, the 2016 Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumnus Award, the 2015 AMIE Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2014 ABET Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity . In 2017, DeLoatch became a 2017 National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee.

DR. ROBIN N. COGER Dean of the College of Engineering, and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Dr. Robin N. Coger is the Dean of the College of Engineering, and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) in Greensboro, NC (www.ncat.edu/coe). Dr. Robin Coger is a mechanical engineer who earned her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, and her Master of Science and Doctoral degrees from the University of California – Berkeley. She completed her post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Prior to joining N.C. A&T in 2011, Dr. Coger served as a Professor and Center Director at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Her career at UNC-Charlotte spanned over 15 years, where she served as a dedicated educator, researcher, and administrator.

Dr. Coger’s research expertise is in solving design and performance problems related to tissue engineered organs. Her work has resulted in numerous journal and conference publications in the areas of liver tissue engineering and cryopreservation;

one patent, and a pending patent application. Dr. Coger has been awarded for her excellence in research, teaching, and mentoring over her career, and is actively engaged in collaborations that advance faculty, innovative ventures, and student competitiveness.

Dr. Coger is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. She is also a Board member of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, FIRST (firstinspires. org), and the Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering (AMIEpartnerships.org) organization. Dr. Coger is also a member of editorial board of the American Society of Engineering Educations publication, PRISM.

GLORIA PUALANI Corporate Director, Global Supplier Diversity Programs/Government Relations Northrop Grumman Corporation Gloria Pualani is the Corporate Director, Global Supplier Diversity Programs/Government Relations for Northrop Grumman Corporation. In this position, she is responsible for the direction, management and implementation of all socio-economic business programs from a corporate perspective. She has been employed by Northrop Grumman in various assignments for over 30 years. She has used her expertise to advance the course of small, women and minority-owned businesses in the aerospace industry. This includes a strong advocacy for increasing business development opportunities for AbilityOne organizations, veteran and service-disabled veteran owned and small business firms. Ms. Pualani represents the corporation at various small business outreach events, federal procurement conferences and symposia. Ms. Pualani has received several awards and recognition for her dedication, active engagement and support to the small business community.

STEVE JARRETT Senior Diversity and Inclusion(D&I) Consultant Oracle Steve is a Senior-level Human Resource executive with over 25 years of experience in human capital management, diversity/ inclusion, talent acquisition, retention, succession planning, and compensation & benefits, Steve understands that a company’s greatest asset is its people.

Throughout his career, he has played a key role in aligning HR with overall corporate growth strategies, developed and implemented analytics to support organizational objectives, and worked to create business environments where team members are inspired to do their best work.

As a Senior Diversity and Inclusion(D&I) Consultant for Oracle, Steve has developed a strategy to enhance the Oracle D&I brand. Steve created the framework that will serve as the foundation for Oracle to provide global D&I support to its business units. Steve simplified the focus areas for Oracle’s Employee Resource Groups to make them simpler without compromising their connection to the business. He created an e-learning D&I module for HR Business Partners worldwide that received 95% favorable ratings for content, alignment with business goals and its non-threatening approach to D&I. His initiatives include line of business specific D&I programs on Unconscious Bias. Steve led the effort to redesign the D&I intranet site making it more intuitive and user friendly and is responsible for creating and gaining approval for Oracle’s D&I tagline, “Innovating Through Diverse Points of View”.

As an independent consultant, Steve developed talent management solutions for firms in multiple industries, including strategies for diversity and inclusion, staffing, succession, retention and employee engagement.

As Senior Vice President of Human Resources with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), Steve has had the opportunity to add value as a key strategic contributor to overall corporate goals. His efforts have led to the creation of the firm’s 1st formalized Succession Planning Program, the 1st Employee Engagement Survey, and 1st Diversity Leadership Council, as well as FINRA’s repeated selection as one of Working Mother magazine’s Top 100 companies.

Prior to joining FINRA, Steve spent more than 25 years with IBM Corporation in progressively responsible HR Management roles, working with organizations ranging from 300 people to large, global business units with more than 85,000 employees worldwide. His efforts focused on creating robust succession planning, compensation, and human capital programs.

As Vice President of Human Resources for IBM’s Integrated Technology Delivery Unit, Steve consolidated programs and services to reduce labor costs by more that 10% and created a robust succession planning process. He also led a task force that created

an HR scorecard that helped to smooth the integration process during multiple mergers and acquisitions. He developed ideas resulting in improved diversity representation within the IBM technical executive population, including nomination of some of the company’s 1st minority and female IBM Distinguished Engineers and IBM Fellows.

Steve holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also completed a certificate program in Strategic Leadership at Harvard University and attended the Human Resources Management Institute at Cornell University.

A Life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Steve and his wife Sharon currently reside in Charlotte NC with their two children, Royce and Tori.

DR. SHIELD B. LIN Interim Dean of the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering Prairie View A&M University Dr. Shield B. Lin is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Prairie View A&M University and have taught courses in the Department for the past 31 years. His fields of interest include finite element analysis and design, dynamics of mechanical systems, automatic controls, and robotics.

Dr. Lin is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. His industrial experience includes working as a design engineer and a production engineer in two companies.

As the Principle Investigator, he has brought in more than ten external funded projects to the College. He currently advises a group of undergraduate and graduate students on a software simulation project funded by CACI/NASA Johnson Space Center. Dr. Lin has extensive administrative experience, having served as the Department Head of Mechanical Engineering from 1997 through 2007, and as the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering from 2007 to 2017. He was appointed to be the Interim Dean of the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering in January 2018.

TAVIA CARSON Siemens PLM Software Saint Louis, Missouri Co-Chairman, Siemens PLM Global Diversity Council – Diversity and Inclusion Tavia Carson is responsible for the strategy and operational leader of the Siemens PL Software Global Diversity Council. She also leads Professional Affiliations & Global Community Relations Teams, driving innovation and digitalization value for displaced workers, strategic customers and business partners. Ms. Carson is a graduate of Webster University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Management.

Ms. Carson has worked for Siemens PLM Software for 18 years, serving as Account Manager for Academic Institutions in the Americas and Asia-Pacific, where she introduced PLM Software

to top universities. Currently Tavia works in the Partner Program Office, as a Partner Manager for Software and Technology Partners.

JAMES C. DALTON, P.E. Director of Civil Works United States Army Corps of Engineers James C. Dalton was selected to the federal Senior Executive Service (SES) in 2005.

Currently, he is the director of Civil Works, based at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the nation’s capital. He manages operations of a $6 billion program of water and land resources around the United States. He oversees more than 25,000 civilian employees and represents the Army Corps of Engineers on various committees.

Mr. Dalton’s previous SES positions include chief, Engineering, and Construction Division, responsible for the Department of Defense programs, other federal agencies, and over 60 foreign nations. He has also served as the Corps’ regional integration team leader for the South Atlantic Division and South Pacific Division integration, chair of the Climate Change Adaption Committee, and leader for Resilience.

Other positions include director of business management for USACE’s Gulf Region in Baghdad, Iraq; deputy district engineer for the Programs and Project Management Division of USACE’s Alaska District, Anchorage. There he was responsible for the district’s interagency and international programs and projects for the Department of Defense and other federal, state and local agencies.

Earlier in his career, he served as the chief of the Ministry of National Defense/Host Nation Liaison of USACE’s Far East District in Seoul, Korea, where he provided leadership and oversight of a large military construction program. From 1997 to 1999, he was the chief and senior in-country representative for the Corps’ office in Egypt.

A native of North Carolina, he has been employed by the Corps since 1978 after graduating with a bachelor’s in architectural engineering from North Carolina A&T State University. He joined the Corps as a cost engineer after the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mr. Dalton was selected for training and attended North Carolina State University where he earned his master’s degree in civil engineering in 1992.

Patricia Burgess Patricia Burgess is the Office Manager for Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE), Director of the AMIE Tutorial STEM Program and Coordinator of the AMIE Internship Program with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She has been employed with AMIE since it was established.

Pat’s involvement with STEM began 24 years ago through a partnership with AMIE and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Through this partnership, she coordinated internships that enabled over 180 students from nine (9) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) the opportunity to intern in Germany, Alaska, Hawaii, Japan and Korea Districts. Pat was instrumental in three of the districts joining the partnership.

She constantly encourages engineering students to apply for these internships to broaden their horizons and give them hands on experience in engineering. Seeing the excitement from the students who had traveled abroad and hearing how much they had learned from other cultures, she thought this might encourage younger students to attend college and pursue a STEM degree. So in 1997, Pat founded the Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE) Tutorial STEM Program in the School of Engineering at Morgan State University.

The AMIE Tutorial Program is an after-school pre-college tutorial program for middle and high school students from the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. The program is designed to assist students in mathematics and help cultivate their interest in science and engineering. In the last 21 years, over 400 students have participated in the program and attended various colleges and universities.
