WHO ARE WE? For more than 30 years, Career Communication Group (CCG) has offered pre-college programs that have provided education and gateways for women, and economically disadvantaged children to enter rewarding areas of STEM. CCG’s Women of Color STEM Conference, which was founded in 1996, has been operating in Detroit since 2013. The annual event assures that its influence on building the STEM pipeline extends into the pre-college community of students, who might not otherwise aspire to STEM careers because of social and economic barriers. WHAT IS THE CCG PROFESSIONAL IN THE CLASSROOM SERIES?
The CCG Professional in the Classroom Series program brings the critical component of a STEM career role model to many Detroit classrooms in the weeks and days leading up to the annual Women of Color STEM Conference. The program was developed to augment the middle and high school experience in Detroit by bringing professional role models who are working in a STEM field to help students connect the relevance of their education to successful and rewarding STEM careers. Selected speakers are expected to share their experiences about their career journey. A candid exchange about the obstacles you face, the triumphs and rewards of your career choices as well as being open to questions from the students sets the stage for a deeper understanding of what is required for success. Pre-college students are invited to participate in these presentations that engage and challenge them to view STEM careers as real options. WHY YOU SHOULD PARTICIPATE
What we’ve learned through years of working with professionals in STEM careers is that the successes of our award recipients, readers, and attendees to our conferences, are largely attributed to exposure to role models early in their educational experience. CCG has been partnering with STEM-related businesses, military personnel, and universities to bring pre-college students together to participate in our conferences. Other important outcomes for participating are: • You will get an up-close look at how the future generations of STEM workers are faring, giving you the opportunity to positively impact the outcomes. • You allow your career success to be an impetus for the success of others. • You help strengthen your organization’s effort to build a diverse STEM workforce. THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE
This CCG Professional in the Classroom Series speaker kit will assist you in preparing for your visit to a local Detroit area school. It will guide you through your presentation and support you with your planning for the event. The CCG Professional in the Classroom Series serves middle and high school students from public and private schools in the Detroit area. The students we serve represent multiple ethnicities. For many, English is not their native language. Many of these students represent a large portion of the lower socio-economic groups. As a CCG Sustained Mentoring Program participant, we ask that you: • Agree to a 45-60-minute visit to a classroom or an assembly at a local school during the week of the Women of Color STEM Conference. • Prepare a 10-15-minute presentation discussing your path to success as a STEM professional; emphasizing the importance of education and asking the students to COMMIT to a life of excellence and education. • Engage and encourage students to ask questions. • Handout college-prep and career information literature. • Handout and collect a student attitude survey.
