Here at the Foundation for Educational Development, our goal is the cultivation and expansion of an extensive network of professionals. This network will lead to the development of new and exciting programs designed to encourage the next generation to pursue educational and career paths in STEM. We are committed to reaching pre-college and college-aged youth, as well as professionals and executives. FEDI will continue to develop and sponsor a series of professional seminars, symposia, and workshops. Your generous donations have helped us reach our goals in 2018. In fact, with your gifts of over $165,000, we were able to help 5,000 students attend college and pre-college STEM programs in 2018. Thank you! History of the Foundation for Educational Development, Inc. The Foundation for Educational Development, Inc. (FEDI), a 501(c)(3), Federal ID 52-1929345, was founded in 1993 to promote engineering, science, and technology to underrepresented men and women through professional and career development, educational programs, awards programs, and career placement opportunities.

The Year in Review Over the last year FEDI programming was able to reach over 5,000 students from around the country. Our programs reached students who are interested in the careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We recognize that there are many STEM programs popping up every day, but one of the things that sets FEDI programs apart is the dedication of our network of STEM professionals. FEDI relies on our unique ability to engage tens of thousands of STEM professionals who donate their time and resources in our programs. In 2018, FEDI continued to connect experienced STEM leaders with students and others who are interested in careers in the field. Over 40 years of empirical evidence of success has our staff committed more than ever to our mission heading into 2018.
At the BEYA Conference, over 2,300 students participated in the college program. Students were joined by more than 4,500 professionals.

programs FEDI Pre-College Programs TAP Student Leadership Symposium The TAP program’s main focus is STEM career awareness and career coaching. It introduces broad topics in information technology that includes high demand career areas like cybersecurity, data analytics and transformative technology needs that spans across industries such as transportation, and manufacturing. The career program introduces middle and high school students to award winners from our conferences to facilitate mentor/ mentee relationships that inspires, motivates, and excites tomorrow’s leaders. FEDI Partner Pre-College and College Programs STEM City Pre-College Speaker Series Sponsored by General Motors The STEM City Pre-College Speaker Series augments a student’s high school experience, bringing STEM professionals onto campus to serve as role models and
to help students better understand the relevance of their education as it contributes to an engaging and rewarding STEM career. STEM role models share their own experiences, speaking candidly about obstacles they’ve faced along with rewarding accomplishments they’ve made and why they chose a career in STEM. Students get first-hand insight about the triumphs and joys associated with STEM careers, and an opportunity to ask questions and receive invaluable advice to help in making the most informed life choices. This program takes place at the Women of Color Conference and primarily serves students in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. WOC Pre-College Program In 2018, over 1,100 students from 20 different schools attended the Women of Color Conference pre-college program.

STUDENTS GET FIRST-HAND INSIGHT ABOUT THE TRIUMPHS AND JOYS ASSOCIATED WITH STEM CAREERS, AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS AND RECEIVE INVALUABLE ADVICE TO HELP IN MAKING THE MOST INFORMED LIFE CHOICES. During the conference, pre-college students participate in a full day program that included hands-on workshops designed by STEM employers, roundtable discussions with some of the current Women of Color Award recipients, and opportunities to learn about STEM career opportunities from employers. Workshop topics include information and advice about applying to college, ways to pay for college, coping with the first year of college, and most importantly, what college-bound students should be doing in their high school and middle school years. High school and middle school students from the Detroit and surrounding areas will be invited to participate. BEYA Pre-College Program In 2018, over 1,300 students from 30 schools attended the BEYA pre-college program. The BEYA Pre-College Program has been an integral partner of the FEDI pre-college program. Additional partners include organizations such as the Maryland Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program, various school districts, and the Patriots Technology Training Center to present programs for middle school and high school students at the conference.
BEYA and WOC College Program The FEDI College Program helps students attend the WOC or BEYA career fair and meet top employers, take advantage of onsite resources designed to enhance job search, to enhance their academic career, as well as to get tools for a successful STEM career. At the BEYA Conference, over 2,300 students participated in the college program. These students were joined by over 4,500 professionals in Washington, DC from February 8-10. In Detroit, 550 students from over 25 different schools attended the Women of Color Conference from October 11-18. These students travelled from 29 different states. BEYA Stars and Stripes Mentoring & Sustained Mentoring Program BEYA Stars and Stripes Mentoring Program is a special component to the BEYA Conference, as it offers an invaluable experience where approximately 400 pre-college (middle and high school) students and engineering majors from local colleges and universities are able to engage nearly 175 flag officers of all Services in inspirational conversation, guidance and mentorship. profiles Board of Directors Tyrone D. Taborn Tyrone D. Taborn, Chairman and CEO of Career Communications Group, Inc. (CCG), is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology, the nation’s oldest general- interest technology magazine for the Hispanic community. Mr. Taborn is also the producer of the award- winning syndicated TV show “Success Through Education.” In addition to Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology, CCG, a multimillion-dollar company, publishes US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine, Science Spectrum magazine and the Women of Color Technology magazine. Mr. Taborn has been a guest editorial writer for the Baltimore Sun and has been a panellist on the television program “Square Off” at WJZ-TV, the CBS affiliate in Baltimore, Maryland. He now writes a national technology column that appears in newspapers, magazines, and on web sites and is currently a member of The National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Taborn has been a member of the Baltimore Engineering Society and has served on the boards of the AfroAmerican Newspaper Company, the Baltimore Urban League, and the Granville Academy. His other current and past board positions include Centro de la Comunidad, Inc., Baltimore Area Council Boy Scouts of America, the Montessori School in Baltimore County, Maryland, Afro-American Newspapers, the Executive Board of the Morgan State University Foundation, and the Board of Trustees of The Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust. Taborn is the founder of Black Family Tech Week program, which is sponsored by the IBM Corporation and Kraft. He is also the founder of La Familia Technology Awareness Week and the Native American Technology Awareness Project. Mr. Taborn was recently selected to receive the Hispanic Engineer of the Year Chairman Award. He was also one of only nine Internet and Technology leaders honored by Sprint and MOBE IT, which recognizes Minority leaders and geniuses in technology, awarded the Visionary Award by Mercedes Benz, and was also named as one of the “50 Most Important African-Americans in 8

Technology” by the editors of Blackmoney.com and souloftechnology.net, which sponsors the awards to demonstrate the critical role that Blacks play in the growth of cutting edge industries. With roots in both the Latino and Black communities, Taborn who grew up in Los Angeles, California, attended college at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. At Cornell, Mr. Taborn majored in government. He also held membership in the Senior Honor Society “Quill and Dagger” and was one of 32 academic scholars honored with membership in the prestigious Telluride Association. In 1978, Mr. Taborn was selected the first LBJ Intern in the office of late Congressman Julian C. Dixon. Gweneth Ferarro Gwenneth Ferraro spent 27 years at the Internal Revenue Services as a Revenue Agent. She was responsible for reviewing tax shelter and corporate returns to ensure all deductions were substantiated. Gwenneth Ferraro is currently retired and has sat on the Foundation for Educational Development, Inc. Board of Directors for over 15 years. Jem Pagan Jem Pagan leverages his 25+ years of experience as an IT executive to consult with enterprises on new market trends, disruptions, innovations and inflection points that are actionable and impactful to drive competitive advantage and differentiation for his clients. Jem served as the Director of Business Transformation Services for Oracle Corporation where he covered North America as a senior level strategic consultant, providing business and technology strategies for the executive leadership level within the Oracle customer base. Prior to joining Oracle, Jem served as SVP of Product Development and Systems Operations and as General Manager of the midAtlantic Region at Mzinga, Inc. In this role, Mr. Pagán architected Mzinga’s Cloud and SaaS Strategy for their Global Learning and Social Media Products and Services Division and provided mission critical learning and certification products for brands such as Chevron, Agilent Technologies, Prudential, TIAA-CREF as well as social solutions for notable brands such as Ford “Sync My Ride”, American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, FOX Network, ABC News, Good Morning America and Disney.

THE CULTIVATION AND EXPANSION OF AN EXTENSIVE NETWORK OF Jem also served as the Chief Enterprise Architect and Chief Information Security Officer for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Office for Information Technology, providing IT Investment and standardization in strategic technologies for 52 Agencies, Boards and Commissions under the Governor’s jurisdiction with an annual recurring IT budget of $2B. He is a member of the New York and Boston CTO clubs, Open Networking Users Group, Chief Marketing Officers Association, Cyber Security Alliance, Cloud Standards Council, Open Internet exchange and the Advisory Board of Continuum Data Center. Ty O. Taborn Ty O. Taborn is the Director of Educational Programs for Career Communications. He sits on the Young Alumni Association Board of the Park School of Baltimore. Taborn received his B.S. from the School of Public Health at University of Maryland, College Park as well as his Masters in Public Policy and Administration at Adler University in Chicago. Additionally, Taborn holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Ty is awaiting admission the Washington D.C. bar exam following successfully sitting for the bar exam in February of 2019.

Pre-College Program Fund
The College Program fund was established to fund everything from a college students registration fees, travel cost, and housing cost for FEDI partner programs. These programs included the College programs at the Women of Color Conference and Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference.
The Pre-College Program fund was established to support and sustain the FEDI Pre-College programs. These partner programs include the STEM City program, TAP program, Women of Color PreCollege program, and the BEYA Pre-College program.
In 2018, our donors contributed over $55,000 to the fund.
