WELCOME FROM VICE ADMIRAL ADAM M. ROBINSON 36th Surgeon General of the United States Navy (2007–2011)

There is no doubt these are challenging and troubling times for our generation. But as other generations have done time and time again, we, too, will find that great spirit to reset and rise. That is why I am pleased to serve as the Chairman of the new Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track at the 2020 Women of Color STEM Virtual Conference.

The Global Health Security Leadership Track will give you an important tool in your toolkit to align learning goals of corporate and government organizations and provide a window into global challenges. No doubt about it, this learning track is informed by diverse experiences. We hope you will take advantage of this.

To get through this we must understand what we are dealing with. COVID-19 is so new we are learning something every day. That’s why the Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track is so important. This is a comprehensive, intensive program designed for the layman to seasoned professionals from all careers. The Women of Color STEM Conference Global Health Security Leadership Track can help us gain new insights and perspectives to lead and manage global teams. As the 36th Surgeon General, I know the first defense is knowledge. Mine began as a General Medical Officer in Puerto Rico, before reporting to the National Naval Medical Center in 1978 to complete a residency. I also bring to bear my subsequent experience as staff surgeon, U.S. Naval Hospital, Yokosuka, Japan, and ship’s surgeon. In 1999, I commanded a detachment of the fleet hospital as a medical contingent to oversee U.S. military relief efforts in Haiti. The same year, I reported as the Director of Readiness and was selected as the principal director in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, where I served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Clinical and Program Policy. In 2005, I assumed duties as commander, Navy Medicine National Capital Area Region. As the Surgeon General, I serve as the Tricare Health Plan representative for active duty sailors and marines, their families, and Navy and Marine Corps retirees and their families, numbering over 2.5 million people. The Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track will look at everything from the American scientists and researcher’s work to accelerate diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics for this novel coronavirus. Health professionals must develop new standards to contain the pandemic and help care for those affected as well as manage pandemics in the workplace. We’ve all heard of past pandemics, such as the new influenza virus pandemic of 1957. Now we are living it. Although the CDC has provided health considerations and tools for operating during COVID-19, businesses & workplaces, colleges & universities, child care and schools, parks & recreational facilities, first responders and faith based organizations must all do their part to help communities plan to stop the virus becoming seasonal.

FROM MONICA EMERSON Women of Color STEM Conference National Chair

Why sign up for the Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track at the Women of Color STEM Conference?

Because there are few platforms better than the Women of Color STEM Conference to address one of the greatest challenges of our generation, and one that disproportionally impacts women and minorities. A recent report from the CDC says that although the effects of COVID-19 on the health of racial and ethnic minority groups is still emerging, current data suggest a disproportionate burden of illness and death among racial and ethnic minority groups. Among COVID-19 deaths for which race, and, ethnicity data were available, New York City identified 92.3 deaths per 100,000 population death rates among african-americans, and 74.3 for Hispanic/Latino persons. Studies are underway to confirm this data while understand and potentially reduce the impact of COVID-19 on the health of racial and ethnic minorities. The Women of Color STEM Conference’s new Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track is designed to help understand the health risks, needs and outcomes for racial and ethnic minority groups, and use our collective voice to help keep our families and communities healthy and safe where we live, learn, work, and play. For more than 20 years, the Women of Color STEM Conference has helped women improve educational standards in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We inspire women who help make America’s health care system work and recognize the talents and contributions of women to America’s healthcare system. Our workshops and seminars for professional development, such as the Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track, provide exclusive training designed to move you forward as you learn from the top minds in the industry. This year, the Women of Color STEM Conference will bring people together to educate, inform, and collaborate. When you attend the WOC Conference virtually, the Global Health Security Leadership Learning Track at Women of Color STEM Conference will provide attendees great benefits for your budget. The Women of Color STEM conference has long been at the forefront of health security. One of our leading voices include, Dr. Nadja Y. West, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Army, the 44th Surgeon General of the U.S. Army and the former Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Command. Previously, she was the Joint Staff Surgeon at the Pentagon, where she acted as chief medical advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and coordinated all related health services issues, including operational medicine, force health protection, and readiness within the military. Top award winners in the 2020 Women of Color STEM Health Hall of Fame include, 2002 Women of Color Health Care Executive of the Year Annie R. Neasman, deputy secretary of the Florida Department of Health and chief public health nurse for the State of Florida; and Rear Admiral Eleanor Valentin, the 2010 Women of Color Technologist of the Year, first woman to reach flag rank in the Medical Service Corps and the first minority officer to lead the Medical Support Command. Join Corporate Leaders, Managers, and Women of Color for a series of dynamic conversations and presentations that cover topics related to women of color in STEM. SMART Leadership: Using Decision Science to Adapt to Global Challenges eminar Description: Our life is tethered to a universal truth: one always wants. In fact, there is never a moment where we don’t want something. Wants on their own are not very interesting, but the inspiring specificity lies in the HOW we go about getting what we want. The beauty is tactics, or strategies, are not only intentional but teachable. From adaptive thinking to systems-based approaches, lean in to deepening skill sets that provide unstoppable navigation in the pursuit of what you want as a leader for your organization. Global Health Leadership: Redefining Our Values Post Pandemic Seminar Description: The people pendulum in many organizations swings between two extremes: “That’s how we’ve always done it” or “New day, new idea.” One end is flatline familiarity, while the other can be unfocused recklessness. With employees and colleagues spread along that spectrum, how do you implement a viable performance improvement initiative that accounts for everyone? Answer is…you don’t! You can’t. The desire for improvement has to be cultivated. Learn how creating opportunities for delegation, continued education, and authentic equity and inclusion can transform performance into an internalized desire instead of external mandate. People & Perspectives: Best Practices for Managing Pandemics, People, and Processes Seminar Description: We often hear in hard or uncertain times that “necessity is the mother of invention.” While there is hearty truth in that push-comes-to-shove mentality, the output is always responsive. Not bad, just responsive. What would happen if the energy shifted from always answering a question of need to asking questions about wants, to thinking forward? What kind of healthy disruption could we generate if we married our mission but constantly dated our model? Inside & Out: Building a Communication Strategy During Crisis Seminar Description: We are all front-row witnesses to the difficulty of tackling a global health crisis in our own country from unused pandemic plans to confusing communication. At present, more than 70% of the world remains underprepared to prevent, detect, and respond to a 21st-century public health emergency. Global health security and leadership is about increasing the capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to health threats. This is going to require participation from both the private and public sector. We must strengthen partnerships, increase awareness, and be a part of the solution.
