th NNOVATION HAPPENS when we cultivate the expansive STEM research taking place on our college campuses that ultimately becomes part of our nation’s industrial fabric and our daily lives. We sow. We reap. We grow. Nowhere is this more evident than in the multicultural richness of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. An evening with BEYA’s Leading Voices celebrates STEM Innovators, selected by their respective HBCUs for their impressive accomplishments. Also featured are four experts in their fields who deliver thought-provoking TechTalks that enlighten and challenge conventional thinking against the backdrop of our Hall of Innovation. WELCOME REMARKS BEYA LEADING VOICES TECH TALK

Presenter: Angela Stribling Dr. Lara Thompson Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering/ Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program University of the District of Columbia

› Topic: Falls and Aging: The Need for NexGen Biomedical Solutions We live in a rapidly aging world and falls are of pressing concern. Within the United States, between 2007 to 2016 fall death rates in older adults has risen by 30%. Further, between 2015 and 2050, the United States Census Bureau predicts that the world percentage of individuals over 65 years of age will increase from 8.5 to approximately 17%. Despite an escalating elderly population, there are insufficient medical clinicians to meet the demand for health services. A shrinking workforce, a burgeoning aging population, financial pressures, and an increased consumer demand may translate into severe personnel deficits, as well as limited healthcare solutions. Biomedical Engineering is a relatively new and distinctive field that merges concepts in engineering to solve problems in human health. This brief presentation will overview the next generation of biomedicalrelated research, and researchers, tied to balance and falls in aging individuals.

BEYA LEADING VOICES TECH TALK

Dr. John Harkless Associate Professor of Chemistry Howard University

› Topic: Quantum: Concepts to Chemistry to Computing The talk is intended to connect the concept and theory of quantum mechanics to current application in chemistry, and the most interesting and promising development of the theory – quantum computing. Those who attend will enjoy an overview of how quantum mechanics ruined a great deal of understanding of the world around us, only to open doors to new ways of knowing and understanding the intersections of chemistry and physics – the source code of the organization of matter itself. The talk concludes with a look at the next wave of disruption from application of quantum concepts - quantum computing. This new paradigm holds the promise of solving intractable problems and opening new avenues of inquiry and development.

HBCU STEM INNOVATORS RECOGNITION

BEYA LEADING VOICES TECH TALK

BEYA LEADING VOICES TECH TALK

Vice President, Internet of Things Visa, Inc.

Presenter: Angela Stribling Dr. Jamese Sims Senior Physical Scientist National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

› Topic: Overview of NOAA’s Artificial Intelligence Demonstrations for Weather Forecast Improvement AI is not new to NOAA. NOAA’s robust experience with AI applications across a range of mission areas are already demonstrating significant improvements in performance and skill at greatly reduced costs and compute time in arenas as diverse as deep-sea exploration, habitat characterization and processing of earth observations. By strengthening coordination, operational capabilities, workforce proficiency and multisector partnerships, NOAA’s national and global leadership in AI will support science,

› Topic: The Internet of Things and Commerce Visa’s vision for the future of payment and commerce technology reflects evolving consumer behavior. Visa is committed to exploring the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance the payment experience in a myriad of connected devices in a manner that is secure. Visa sees this as an opportunity to incorporate security and stellar user experiences in the IoT connected device space. Join us with other BEYA Leading Voices as we discuss the delivery of smart, secure, invisible technology that brings payment convenience to everyday life. CLOSING REMARKS
