HOW CAN WE SUSTAIN OUR NATION’S PROGRESS AND INNOVATION?

F

Our Pre-College Programs

or more than 30 years, Career Communication Group, Inc. has offered K-12 programs that have provided education and gateways for women, and economically disadvantaged children to enter rewarding areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Thanks to our programs, tens of thousands of students have achieved their educational and professional dreams – and they are now leading contributors in their chosen STEM fields. As history shows us, the most economically advanced nations are those that value education. Global regions with the highest poverty, famine, illness, and corruption further tend to be those with the lowest human development rates. Nations cannot grow without an educated population, and that education must begin at Kindergarten up through a student’s middle and high school experience. As a nation, we’re faced with increasing global competition. Ensuring our continued rank and status on a global scale demands that we invest in educating our population so they are prepared to solve tomorrow’s challenges – particularly in STEM. Career Communications Group (CCG) has been part of the national dialog and solution for decades.

OUR PROGRAMS

STEM City Pre-College Speaker Series

Technology Awareness Program (TAP)

What is it? At the forefront of our national discourse is our need to enrich STEM education and career opportunities. This is broadly tied to our ability to compete on a global scale. Trends continue to show us that an insufficient number of U.S. students are pursuing STEM careers, and women are leaving the field far sooner than their male counterparts. But this trend can be reversed.

The Quarry Lane School sums up the importance of technology awareness programs that target youth from elementary to high school, “science, technology, engineering, and math have always been key components of a college preparatory education. However, in recent years, studies have shown that fewer than 50% of high school graduates are ready for collegelevel math and science courses. This lack of readiness can affect a student’s chances of earning a four-year degree, which in turn can affect his or her job opportunities.”

Our mission since 1986 has been to increase opportunities and representation in STEM fields by women and underrepresented groups, thus fostering a more diverse workforce for future generations. We accomplish this by offering assistance in STEM career pursuits and by promoting growth within relevant organizations. The STEM City Pre-College Speaker Series augments a student’s high school experience, bringing STEM professionals onto campus to serve as role models and to help students better understand the relevance of their education as it contributes to an engaging and rewarding STEM career. STEM role models share their own experiences, speaking candidly about obstacles they’ve faced along with rewarding accomplishments they’ve made and why they chose a career in STEM. Students get first-hand insight about the triumphs and joys associated with STEM careers, and an opportunity to ask questions and receive invaluable advice to help in making the most informed life choices. Following decades of work with STEM professionals, we’ve learned that our award recipients, our magazine readership, and our conference attendees attribute a large part of their success to their exposure to motivational role models early in their education. Our STEM City USA Pre-College Speaker Series brings this critical success component into your classroom during the exciting weeks and days leading up to our conferences. At your request, we can also provide speakers for your classrooms at any time throughout the year. The TAP program’s main focus is STEM career awareness and career coaching. It introduces broad topics in information technology that includes high demand career areas like cybersecurity, data analytics and transformative technology needs that spans across industries such as transportation, and manufacturing. The career program introduces middle and high school students to award winners from our conferences to facilitate mentor/mentee relationships that inspires, motivates, and excites tomorrow’s leaders. Students enjoy a full day of activities at either the Women of Color STEM Conference in Detroit, MI or the BEYA STEM Conference in Washington, DC. The day culminates in a 2-hour mentor session with STEM professionals. Washington, DC area students are offered additional activities where the mentoring sessions occur throughout the school year. The TAP program has been life changing and has: 1. Created excitement amongst its participants around careers in STEM. 2. Exposed thousands of students to STEM professionals who have shared lessons, advice, best practices, and innovative approaches within information technology and cyber security fields. 3. Hosted career day activities and hands-on experiences that give students the opportunity to engage, explore, excite, and develop an interest in technology.

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE? Organizations work hard to develop and deliver STEM programs to youth in our communities. But this involves funding, student and parent recruitment, and programming challenges. Integral to promoting STEM is providing role models able to connect what happens in the classroom with real world experiences. This is where our Pre-College programs come in.

college recruiters, helping them see the possibilities of, and the path toward, a rewarding career in STEM.

Our programs don’t reinvent the wheel but, instead, establish a platform for those with resources and expertise to supplement existing community educational programs. Our interactive activities help you easily connect pre-college students in your organization with STEM professionals, like-minded community leaders, and educators.

My own participation in CCG’s Pre-College Program years ago was pivotal in my decision to pursue a career in chemistry,” Sherley Homme. “It was so exciting to learn from a woman who was actually in the job I wanted. She gave me advice and guidance to help make the right choice for my future and to navigate through those challenging next steps.”

Building Trust and Solving Challenges Each year since 1986, we’ve helped more than 60,000 college-bound students across five states and the District of Columbia connect with STEM role models and industry representatives. We offer a motivational environment complete with hands-on activities and workshops along with career guidance and extracurricular learning. Students have the opportunity to meet with, and speak to, industry representatives and

And year after year, our participants return as young professionals – many receiving prestigious awards.
