GOODBYE NEIL

AFTER 28 YEARS, NEIL MERRY RETIRES FROM THE CYCLING BUSINESS As many of you may know, the CSG UK joint managing director steps down after 28 years in the bicycle trade. Neil joined his father at Hot Wheels in 1984, the end of the first BMX bike boom in the UK. He set about broadening the range of products sold by the family business to include scooters, skateboards and other action sports inspired categories.

to ride bikes. I have enjoyed working with so many different dealers, many of whom are family businesses in the same way as Hot Wheels began.

In 1989 Neil and his father Graham were joined in the family business by Russell Merry, and together the brothers accelerated the growth of the business, with Graham taking more of a back seat.

CSG UK will build on the firm foundations that Neil has helped to lay, with Russell continuing in the role of Managing Director and Mark Broughton promoted to Finance Director. Ian Wagman will be promoted to the role of Head of Sales with other opportunities and promotions possible across the Dorel Recreation/ Leisure UK business.

In 1989 Hot Wheels had a turnover of approximately £700,000, but had grown to almost £14 million and 26 staff when the business was sold to Dorel in 2009. Since then Neil and Russell, as Joint Managing Directors, have virtually doubled sales again to £27 million in 2011. Recently when asked to comment Neil said “We have come a long way from relatively humble beginnings in a lifestyle industry that I have enjoyed. The unique character of the bicycle industry has presented challenges, but also many opportunities. I have travelled extensively with my work both prior to the sale of Hot Wheels and subsequently in my role within the Cycling Sports Group, I have met many interesting people who will remain friends for life and I have been fortunate to travel to some fantastic locations

I now have the opportunity to find new ways to spend my time, much of which will be spent on my interest in historic motor sport with my wife Debbie.”

Jeff Weiss, VP International Sales, Cycling Sports Group said, “I have worked with the Merry brothers for many years when selling to Hot Wheels, helping CSG UK in its earliest days and more recently as a point of contact in our USA offices.” “I know that I speak for all of Dorel Recreational/Leisure Division in wishing Neil all the best for the future and recognise he will be a success with his hobbies, interests or any future business ventures. Neil and I both know that the UK is in safe hands with Russell and the new management team which will see CSG UK go from strength to strength”

GT RACING UK 2012 SEASON REVIEW By Chris Hughes GT Racing UK Team Manager 2011 saw GT Racing UK compete in a fantastic first year for the team, which saw one rider crowned National Champion for Scotland, another winning the Scottish XC Series, a BMBS round 3rd place, numerous regional wins and top performances at the home World Cup and throughout the British Mountain Bike Series. The 2012 season proved to be even better! The team switched to all new 2012 Carbon Fibre GT Zaskar Custom Bikes with 29” wheels to compete with the best our competitors have to offer. They were also supplied new race kit from Scottish cycle clothing manufacturer Endura, with new sponsors in the way of Accellerade nutrition, Lezyne tools, Schwalbe tyres, SRAM gearing & brakes and Mavic for wheels, as well as continuing support from Muc-Off, Eyewear Outlet, FUSE and Crank Brothers. NEW MARKETING MANAGER JOINS CYCLING SPORTS GROUP In a metaphorical exchange of baton, Clive Gosling joins CSG as UK Marketing Manager, replacing Mike Cotty who has left the post but remains a Cannondale sponsored brand ambassador. Mikes original appointment as Marketing Manger eleven years ago replaced Clive at Cannondale Europe. However this is much more of a ‘coming home’ for Clive who has been intimately involved with the GT and Mongoose brands as a sponsored BMX and mountain bike rider as much as it is a reunion with Cannondale. Clive joins the company with a wealth of knowledge across all product categories and with twenty years experience in cycle retailing brings a unique bridge to help CSG retain it’s position as a preferred supplier to the UK specialist cycle retail network. Please feel free to contact Clive via clive.gosling@cyclingsportsgroup.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON CANNONDALE

CANNONDALE LAUNCHES NEW PRO-CYCLING TEAM WITH BRIXIA SPORT

FOLLOWING A SUCCESSFUL TOUR DE FRANCE, CANNONDALE SIGNIFICANTLY BEEFS UP PARTNERSHIP WITH BRIXIA SPORTS TO BECOME TITLE SPONSOR

“Fans of the sport, and of Cannondale, can expect to see one of the world’s best race teams riding on the most exciting bikes available,” said Burbank. “It’s truly a partnership in innovation and excellence.” “We are incredibly pleased with Cannondale’s decision to continue and increase its partnership with the team,” said Paolo Zani, President of Brixia Sport. “We share the same goal of furthering a sports project that has produced exciting results in recent years. We are convinced that the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team will be one of the most competitive teams in international cycling.

Combining the Italian tradition of cycling with the naturally innovative spirit of a brand like Cannondale will initiate the genesis of an international team that will always be a main contender wherever it competes.” “The qualities with which the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team sports partnership begins will provide great motivation for the entire organisation at Brixia Sport,” said Team Manager Roberto Amadio. “The experience and expertise we have gained since 2005 form a solid foundation on which to build the future of the new team. We have ambitious goals and the right structure to ensure we achieve them. We’ll have a sound squad with a focus on young riders and a strongly international influence. We will repay Cannondale’s trust in us with the utmost commitment and professionalism. The team is thrilled to know that they continue to ride on the best bike in the world.” ANNONDALE P GC R IN

“Cannondale is excited to partner with Brixia Sport to be the title sponsor of the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team. Innovation leadership is part of our DNA. For the past six years, it has been a thrill to watch the team push their limits on our bikes as we push the boundaries on what those bikes can do,” said Bob Burbank, General Manager, Cannondale. “With the title sponsorship, our dealers and consumers can expect to see us really challenge the status quo and develop programs and opportunities that demonstrate our continued commitment to professional cycling in new and exciting ways that will be undeniably Cannondale.”

Cannondale began its relationship with the team in 2007 as the technical sponsor for the Liquigas Pro Cycling Team. In January of 2010, Cannondale became a co-sponsor of the Liquigas-Cannondale Team. Since 2007, the team has won three Grand Tours, including the Giro d’Italia in 2007 and 2010 and the Vuelta a Espana in 2010, two Tour de France jerseys, including the 2009 Polka Dot and the 2012 Green Jersey, and countless prestigious individual races inbetween. Throughout the relationship, the team has ridden the race-proven line of Cannondale road bikes including the SuperSix, Slice, Slice RS, Synapse and the recently named “Best Bike in the World” SuperSix EVO Ultimate.

INTROD UC

Cannondale has announced that it is significantly increasing its investment with Brixia Sport to become the title sponsor of their pro cycling team, newly named “Cannondale Pro Cycling Team.” The relationship is effective January 1, 2013. For 2013 and beyond, Cannondale and the team will focus on the development of a young stable of incredible talent including Peter Sagan, the winner of the Green Jersey at the 2012 Tour de France, Moreno Moser and Elia Viviani. These riders will, in turn, be guided by committed veterans like Ivan Basso.

CANNONDALE’S CERV TOP REVIEWS DESIGNED TO SERVE CANNONDALE CAAD8 THE WEEKEND WARRIOR Cannondale had a vision; a concept bike packed full of cutting edge technology that would see its world debut at EUROBIKE (Germany) on 8/29/2012. Forkless, chainless, and dynamically adjustable, the concept was radical. Current road bikes generally fall into one of two main categories: road racers with low, aggressive positions, or so-called ‘endurance’ bikes with similarly low weights but more upright positions better suited for cruising. Cannondale’s CERV (Cannondale Ergonomic Race Vehicle), however, is targeted at both — what the company believes will be the well-heeled weekend warrior of the future.

Traditional Frame & Position

The CERV’s key feature is its on-the-fly adjustable geometry – the wheelbase stays constant but the seat tube, top tube and head tube all move to provide different stack, reach and centre of gravity figures to suit different conditions. In Cannondale’s vision, the carbon fibre chassis also boasts front and rear suspension (moving on needle bearings, of course), a single-sided fork and rear end, push-button electronic shifting, an integrated computer display, a fully enclosed shaft-driven transmission, and one-piece carbon fibre wheels. As if that weren’t enough, the front end also uses a novel tilting geometry for steering and the hydraulic brakes are a curious hybrid of rim and disc brake technology, using compact callipers similar to current systems but with integrated into the frame structure and clamping on a giant rotor that’s essentially the same diameter as the rim itself.

The chassis remains constant under the rider while the *cockpit* is allowed to move into positions that suit the riding conditions. This allows the rider to move their *center of gravity* to best suit the riding conditions. This is different from an existing bike because it doesn’t change the steering relationship between the rider and the bike. It also allows the rider to safely keep their hands on the bars while gaining new positions. Example - If you wanted a shorter top tube length you would simply have to buy a new bike - If you wanted a shorter stem you would have to go to a shop, buy one and then put it on your bike. This bike can adjust on the go to meet that need and then adjust back when that no longer exists.

RRP: £599.99

For 2013, Cannondale’s CAAD8 frame is available with a Shimano 2300 groupset, battling it out at the budget end of the market – with one of the lowest weights of any £600 road bike. – Cycling Plus | November 2012

The most rounded and cultured of our quartet proved to be the Cannondale, who’s sublime handling, fine spec and thoughtful touches like the smaller rear disc rotor and compact bar won us over. The CAADX will give great service for years, and the disc brakes only improve it.

INTRODUCING THE SHO-AIR CANNONDALE TEAM

SHO-AIR, CANNONDALE COMBINE FOR NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE TEAM Cannondale has entered into a partnership with Team Sho-Air Inc. to launch the all new Sho-Air/Cannondale North American mountain bike team, based out of Southern California. Sho-Air and Cannondale unveiled the new squad at a media event and team trail ride in Orange County, California. The team represents Cannondale’s factory MTB efforts in North America and will also support the global Cannondale Factory Racing Team at North American World Cup events. Sho-Air/Cannondale brings together accomplished pros Max Plaxton, Pua Mata, Alex Grant, Jeremiah Bishop and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee Tinker Juarez. It’s managed by five-time amateur national champion Ty Kady, with support from retired Sho-Air pro Manny Prado, winner of the 2009 La Ruta de los Conquistadores. In a bit of cross-marketing, motorsports athletes (and cyclists) Eric Bostrom and Josh Hayes have also been signed to the team. Team Sho-Air first appeared in 2005 as an amateur race team—launched by Scott Tedro, president and CEO of trade-show materials and transportation provider Sho-Air International—but has grown over the years to establish a national presence with membership of more than 1,000 riders. The three-year partnership with Cannondale marks the end of the North American pro squad’s association with longtime sponsor Specialized. “Cannondale’s investment in the team coincides with a recent resurgence in the popularity of mountain biking and racing as well as the company’s desire to increase participation”, global general manager Bob Burbank said at Thursday’s event. “We were really looking for someone who was not only about racing, but about development of the sport,” he said of Sho-Air and Tedro. “He’s in it for the right reason. At the end of the day, he wants to promote the sport. There’s no doubt in my mind that’s his main priority.” Tedro also said the entities’ shared values helped seal the deal for him. “The reason they came to us is they wanted to do a better job of promoting their product and their riders,” he added. “But they have matched and exceeded efforts in so many ways. This is what I envisioned as a team when I first started Sho-Air.” The team will be riding custom spec’ Cannondale F29 Carbon hardtails and Scalpel 29er carbon full-suspension bikes for the longer events. These will be equipped with Cannondale’s legendary Lefty Suspension fork and Hollowgram Cranks “The Scalpel and F29 are the perfect bikes for Sho-Air /Cannondale’s style of riding,” said Burbank. “With these bikes and riders, the team will definitely be a force to be reckoned with. We’re looking forward to Sho-Air /Cannondale dominating in 2013.” On the cross country mountain biking race circuit, Cannondale has had a long and very successful history. There have been various XC teams over the years including the Cannondale-Vredestein (formerly Volvo/Cannondale) racing team, the Bear Naked/Cannondale racing team (formerly SoBe/Cannondale) and various individual 24-hour racers such as Bicycling Hall of Famer and US National 24 hour Champion Tinker Juarez(Who now joins the new team). A large number of notable riders have been sponsored by Cannondale at some point in their career, including world champions Anne-Caroline Chausson and Missy Giove, Olympic Silver medalist (and World Champion) Alison Sydor, Bronze medalist Christoph Sauser, “Flyin” Brian Lopes, Cadel Evans, Kashi Leuchs, Libor “The Bouncing Czech” Karas, Martyn Ashton, Lance Trappe, Aaron Chase, Myles Rockwell,Cédric Gracia, Roel Paulissen, Fredrik Kessiakoff, and Chris Van Dine, who rides for the Cannondale Cut team and demos watch team. The team is additionally supported by Enve Composites, Fizik, Maxxis, Magura, SRAM, Thomson, Crankbrothers, Osmo Nutrition and custom apparel maker Jakroo. Bring on the 2013 XC season!

YOU GOTTA ROLL WITH IT No longer confined to the fringes of the mountain bike world, 29’ERS are fast becoming the norm. Roots, rocks, ruts, you name it. 29” wheels roll right over obstacles, increasing stability, improving traction and offering a more comfortable ride in the process. Amazingly, contrary to what you may have led yourself to believe, those extra few inches do make all the difference. Don’t ride against it.....roll with it.

‘BISH BOSH’ CANNONDALE UK ‘GOOD FIGHTER’ AIDAN BISHOP REPORTS ON HIS 2012 SEASON The 2012 race season came and went…..fast! As they all seem to recently. This season I jumped at the chance to race on the Cannondale Jekyll again and this time I got to ride the pimp carbon framed model in the luscious matt two tone finish; super light, super cool, super stoked! Early season and my XC racing didn’t seem to go as well as last season, partly down to long recovery times trying to get over bugs and colds, but I was still fit and enjoying racing my Cannondale Scalpel with the other super competitive Masters racers. With the fast growing popularity of the gravity enduro format amongst riders, racers and media alike, the first round of the UK Gravity Enduro series in Innerleithen, Scotland was a resounding success. A sold-out race with a great atmosphere & freakishly hot and sunny weather run on some very fun and demanding trails for an epic loop. Cannondale’s world beating enduro racer Jerome Clementz came to see how the UK does it, he dominated the race in impressive style, proving he is a racer with some serious fitness and skills. Trying too hard led to crashes and a disappointing start to true racing season for me. Still, magazines were covering the event and I even got my old mug into Dirt a couple of times, first time in a long while; felt like old times! In June I was given the opportunity to travel to Spain for a round of a Spanish enduro series supported by Cannondale. So I got to see how things were done in another country and ride alongside Jerome Clementz for the weekend. A great weekend riding on great trails in a well-run event and ended up putting the Jekyll onto the top two steps of the podium to boot, happy days! Mid season and an epic road trip meant I drove to France to first catch the Tour de France live, spinning the Jekyll off- road up the mountainside before finishing the climb on-road at the col de la Madeleine to watch Wiggo and co. steam past with the rest of the riders that make up the peloton. Next stop: my first attempt at the Mountain of Hell race, back-to-back with a week at the Megavalanche. Mountain of hell has to be the craziest start to a race I have ever done! 500 guys on the snow all tucked in, no brakes doing 60mph plus, proper adrenaline! I finished 28th only to find I was given a time penalty for a reason I was never told, and so dropped a few places. Finishing 17th at the Mega in 2011, I was hoping to match or better that this year. All went well, qualifying 3rd in my heat with world cup downhillers and a place near the front for the main race. A messy start meant I had work to do, but I was just exiting the top technical half of the race in the top 40 and feeling good for the pedalling ahead. Then disaster struck in the form of a rock smashing my rear mech off, gutted!

EUROBIKE GOLD AWARD WINNER RACING BIKE AWARD FOR SUPERSIX EVO BLACK

Company: Cycling Sports Group Europe, Basel/Switzerland Design: Cycling Sports Group Europe, Basel/Switzerland The SuperSix EVO is a road racing machine. It is the perfect blend of all the key performance factors: weight, stiffness, strength, compliance, handling and aerodynamics. The EVO was designed for serious road racers and breaks the mold for elite racing machines. It is extremely LIGHT – at less than 700g, it sports the lightest production frame in the world, extremely STIFF – it has the best stiffness-to-weight ever recorded, an incredible 142.3 Nm/deg/kg and extremely STRONG – it even outperforms most aluminum frames in destructive and fatigue testing. Jury statement: “It is one of the lightest production frames in the world, absolutely safe with great handling stability. It sets new standards for what is possible that will be almost impossible for the competition to beat. The Evo provides a perfect ride, and that’s worth Gold!”

RRP: £7499.99

Finishing the year out, I competed in all rounds of the UK enduro series. I was well in reach of an overall podium spot in Pro class with two rounds to go. A freak crash in seeding in the penultimate round meant needed points slipped out of reach, but battling on was fun! The final round was a great way to wrap up the year however, a sunny Welsh round with a long route and some pretty special stages and scenery. A solid race saw my first stage win, but ending up 4th just 7seconds back; close but no cigar!

See you out there!

So another year under my belt, some highs, some lows, but overall just more good times riding and racing bikes with good friends and great locations. The carbon Jekyll was solid and ate up all races with ease, taking everything myself and the elements could throw at it. Time for winter training now, ready to get back on the Jekyll and take on more enduro events worldwide. With the evidence of World Series being put together and more national races everywhere I, for one, can’t wait!!!!

CAN NO

To cap the year off nicely, another UK enduro series had their final round on my home turf, so I went, raced, had fun and took the win too. Then a piece of filming I did for a Richard Hammond show on BBC1 aired. A brief appearance, but something different, was fun to be on the TV jumping the bike around.

Ash from Charge said “Shortly after the launch of our excellent ‘Griddle’ grip (as featured in Dirt top 100 MTB products) we started work on an even lighter lock-on in the guise of the ‘Skillet’. Our aim was to produce the most compliant steel 29’er frame on the market. By equipping custom-drawn cro-mo tubes with our test-winning geometry, we produced one of the best handling frames we have ever made. Based on a 100mm travel suspension fork, our unique geometry dispels any rumours that 29ers are unwieldy and boat-like in their technical handling; quite the opposite with the Cooker.

The idea was to use the forgiving and shock absorbing qualities of the steel material whilst reducing that all important weight, but not compromising strength, responsiveness or stiffness. The result… a swift and beautifully riding bicycle.

Call this what you want; Commuter Cross, CX racer, Urban Commuter, Utility Bike, Chicken Chaser. A tool for many jobs and adaptable for most terrains. We have ridden this bike down our local DH track, at CX races, to work and also from Edinburgh to Paris. It can do almost anything and is built tough to do it. The Apex is the flagship model and gets a more racier spec with knobblies, full SRAM Apex and BB5 discs.

Featured bicycle: Plug Prestige

Based loosely around the cyclo-cross race proven titanium Freezer, but with adjusted geometry, making it the perfect commuting machine. Seamless butted Tange Infinty tubing keeps the frame light and responsive and mudguard and rack mounts make for ultra versatile cycling, whatever the weather. If you’re out for a road ride or commuting along a canal towpath on your daily grind, you will not be disappointed with the Filter.

The Plug symbolises what many people strive for in an urban bicycle… value, style and individuality with little to look after or service. The Plug Prestige uses a lightweight frame constructed from Tange skinny butted steel tubeset and built using high quality classic parts like a 1” quill stem, classic drop bars and our aftermarket Rotisserie cranks and luxury Pan saddle. This is classic design at its best.

GT RACING UK 2012 SEASON REVIEW Hill Chasers, racing head to head against riders from all disciplines of cycling. Gareth finished 2nd as the fastest mountain biker up the notoriously steep climb in Bristol’s city centre. Dave recently won the No Fuss Tour de Ben Nevis, while Jon Pybus was crowned the University Mountain Bike Champion for 2012.

By Chris Hughes GT Racing UK Team Manager We kicked off the 2012 race season with a win at the opening round of the Midlands XC series. Dave Henderson and Gareth Montgomerie also represented GT Racing UK at the Andalucia Bike Race in Spain. In a very tough race the boys finished an amazing 10th place overall, placing them as the fastest British and non-UCI ranked team and we later found out they were only 13 seconds down on 9th place! A truly fantastic result to the two Scots!

In the Scottish Cross Country Round 1 a Kirroughtree we saw a 1st & 2nd for Gareth & Dave respectively. Dave and Gareth also managed a respective 2nd & 4th in the Scottish Championships held this year at Aberfoyle.

We’ve also had some solid results in the British Cross Country Series, Ed McParland winning the Juniors in the mud of Dalby Forest at the 2nd Round and Dave coming 3rd and Gareth 5th in the Elites at Kirroughtree in Scotland. In the final round at Langdon Hills in Essex, Gareth very nearly won the round, finishing 2nd. We’d like to thank British Cycling for putting on such a great series of races! Ed has flown to the Czech Republic to represent the United Kingdom at UCI MTB World Cup in Nove Mesto and Dave Henderson raced at the UCI MTB World Cups in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada and Windham, USA, as well as travelling to France with Gareth to take part in the race in Val d’Isere. We also had some success in various other races around the country. We were invited to take part in the madness that is the Red Bull

SUBJECT BMX

Mongoose team riders rarely take it easy, so it’s safe to say that if our bikes can take what they dish out, then they will hold up for you too. If this bike doesn’t hold up to your riding, chances are you’re not better than our guys, you’re just not very good at landing. But, we won’t fault you for that. This year’s line-up has something for everyone whether you live in the vert ramp, session the streets or dig dirt jumps all day.

TV PRESENTER, CYCLE CLOTHING DESIGNER, BUSINESS WOMAN AND RACER! ANNA GLOWINSKI WILL NOW BE RIDING FOR MONGOOSE. By Chris Hughes GT Racing UK Team Manager Anna is the presenter of the very successful ITV4 Cycle Show, Co-presented by Graham Little, with support from three-time Olympic track cycling medallist Rob Hayles. She also runs and designs a female specific cycle clothing brand called AnaNicoola, but racing bikes is still her first love. “I started riding when I was about four, and racing from the age of five” In fact, cycling became a way of life for Anna, and it remains so. “I can’t remember not being able to do it; it’s always been part of what I do and who I am. When I was small, it was something that I was good at and I kept getting better at it as time went on. I eventually became National Mountain bike champion when I was about thirteen or fourteen, and also national Cyclo-cross champion at the same age. I was national champion several times.” She has now turned her sights to the UK’s Gravity Enduro series and this is where the new relationship with Mongoose comes in. Anna will be racing and training on Mongoose’s 2013 range of bikes. “I am so stoked to be riding for a company with such a broad range as Mongoose. It means I can have a go at all the biking Disciplines! I am hooked on the Gravity series at the moment, I plan on touring the country and doing as many as I can, I’d like to do pretty well in them and see some podiums. I also want to give 4X a go.” So expect to see Anna riding a Mongoose at a race near you soon!

By Chris Akrigg Mongoose Team Rider So it’s pretty much a year and a half since i broke my leg (for the first time)! to say it’s been character building is a bit of an understatement. But the time that I’ve actually spent riding has been well worth it, as I’ve clocked over a million views on the videos that I’ve managed to get out, the last of which was ‘Through The Mill’ - getting a quarter of a million on its own. That edit and process was what I thought was the final piece of the rehab’ process, it was clear in my mind from that point on I could get right back to going wild, but a mountain in Austria had other plans! So, I’d been doing a photo shoot at the top of this Mountain, feeling really good and riding some pretty out-there lines. After we got the shots, all we had to do was ride down; job done! Because I’d been riding hard all morning, I decided to take it easy on the way down hanging back behind some slower rider so I didn’t get carried away, I must have been going about one mph when I hit a stone which put me over the bars. I landed on my leg and I heard it go! I jumped back on the bike and tried to ride, just hoping that what had just happened hadn’t, but it had! Luckily, I still have the full metal rod in my femur from the original fracture so I knew my leg wasn’t going to break in half; I nursed myself down the mountain and then drove pretty much twenty four hours back home to hospital. The x-rays showed a spiral fracture of the femur. That was nearly ten weeks ago; I started riding a couple of weeks ago and things are slowly getting stronger. I’ve been at this point before, so I know I can get back to where I want to be, just got to get my head down and do the work. I will be back!

SPOTLIGHT ON WETHEPEOPLE When we first started designing BMX products back in the early 1990’s we didn’t quite know what technique would be the best, most productive, or cost-effective. We just knew we wanted to change the way that BMX bikes were being made and that was enough to drive us forward. Over the years we realized we wanted to start achieving big things, one was to combat the problem of weakness within tubing, improve welding and take BMX a step forward in engineering innovations. We wanted to build bikes that could last and be ridden with a sense of satisfaction. We wanted that experience to last. Our experience today is vast and this helps us to figure out problems quicker and be wary of fads or phases. We feel it’s important to struggle and strive to reach your goals and those early years are a constant reminder of our dedication in the BMX industry. When we design a bike frame, a fork or a part we design it from scratch, with integrity and belief in originality and class. We couldn’t have quite done what we do now, all those years ago, but then that’s all part of the process of evolution and invention. There’s nothing worse in life than not understanding something, because knowledge is power and knowledge must be earned through struggle, taking risks and trusting your gut. WETHEPEOPLE is all about that, it’s about taking a leap forward and designing bikes that want to be ridden every single day through and through.

CURSE

COLOURWAYS

The Curse is brand new on the scene and crept into our range exhibiting a 4130 cro-mo downtube, 25-9 gearing, cassette hub and a pivotal seat. Most entry-level completes just can’t compete with extras like ÉCLAT pedals and 3pc cro-mo crankset but we kitted the Curse with an otherwordly selection of awesome parts. The Curse is a perfect option for a young starter as its nice short 20” toptube and 13.15” chainstay makes riding a breeze.

REASON COLOURWAYS

You will be pleased to hear the Reason frame has retained its 4130 cro-mo top tube, downtube and chainstays giving that extra level of strength you need. You’ll be equally happy to see the SALTPLUS ‘HQ’ fork up front, made from 4130, just like the bars that guide it, making up a street-slaying front end. This year we added the thick padded ÉCLAT ‘Unify’ seat, along with some brand new ‘Raptor’ grips and a SALT ‘Pro’ top-loading stem to really give you much more than your average complete bike. We’ve added our excellent ‘Summit’ double-wall rim in the rear, a pair of SALTPLUS ‘Forum’ nylon/fibreglass pedals and sweet 25t SALT sprocket.

ZODIAC COLOURWAYS

Don’t let the 80’s fade trick you into thinking the Zodiac has gone retro, because it’s the complete opposite, this thing’s straight from the future. Look closely and you’ll see the ÉCLAT ‘Moon’ grips and the ‘Oz’ pivotal seat with its spaceship-like base. And that’s not all, because the Zodiac comes fully equipped with the latest in BMX componentry, including SALTPLUS ‘Magic’ Forks with invest cast dropouts, SALTPLUS ‘Delta’ CNC alloy top-loading stem and an ÉCLAT ‘Diesel’ chain. The future theme continues with the newly crafted SALTPLUS ‘Trapez-v2’ female hubs, a pair of ÉCLAT tires and a set of amazing ‘Plaza’ pedals also by ÉCLAT. A dream list, you might say. We certainly do!

THE ‘CLASH’ FRAME Available in Black, Raw, Trans Red, Trans Blue, C.P. Top Tube: 20.5” or 21” RRP: £239.99

THE ‘DAWN’ FRAME – Maxime Charveron Signature Frame Available in Black or Raw. Top Tube: 20.8” or 21” RRP: £279.99

The CLASH is a newbie for 2013, based around the very popular Trust complete bike frame, but with a few aftermarket touches to make it that little bit extra special. The back end gets super-tech 7mm heat-treated dropouts and integrated chain tensioners. The headtube is CNC’d and heat-treated for a precise, strong front end. The seat clamp is beautifully integrated into the frame, and the butted toptube with our new extruded profile improves the strength, as well as providing a clean look to this remarkable frame.

Back in June 2011, Wethepeople began working with Maxime on his very own signature frame, and from the start we all had a feeling this was going to be something special. The brief was to create a super-simple frame with attention to detail and quality on the less obvious frame features. This lead us to focus on things like more refined toptube and downtube diameters and small yet perfectly formed dropouts, plus really neat finishing touches on the bridges and seat clamp details. We spent a long time checking out clips of Maxime’s riding to try to and get to the core of his riding style so that hopefully The Dawn feels completely connected to him when he rides.

PETER SAWYER WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE WTP RIDER AND TALKED ABOUT HIS SIGNATURE ‘WHAM’ BAR & 2013 PLANS Is the Wham bar named after your favourite chew bar ? How does it compare to Highland Toffee or Refresher bars ? I don’t really eat any of them much due to fear of my fillings coming out with an unlucky chew; but, in order, it does go Wham, Refresher, then lastly the Highland chew. Whats the biggest change to your life since turning Pro with WeThePeople ? Not much has changed, I get a wage off them now which is good and helps with things like rent, giving me more time to ride and less time spent trying to accumulate money. You’ve travelled a fair bit this year. What’s been your favourite experience from your travels so far ? One of my favourite places travelled to this year would have to be Portland, I spent three weeks there during July which was amazing, it was so much fun riding everyday hanging out with friends and eating rad food, also the constant sun and skateparks/plazas helped! Big plans for 2013 ? I’m having talks at the moment with these two friends, they pretty much spend every evening trying to take over the world, so i think i’ll lay off the riding during this and focus on helping my friend Pinky and his friend Brain on their ever changing diabolical plan towards world domination. Who’s taller, Will Evans or Paul Ryan ? I think Will is taller but also broader, which gives the illusion he is the same height.

Pete Sawyer. Image taken from issue of Ride BMX How come you’re riding a frame from WTP’s complete bike range and not an after-market frame? How’s it holding up ? The WeThePeople completes are at such a high standard of quality nowadays I thought I’d put one to the test an see what it had to offer, I read up about the geometry of the frame and they all seemed pretty close to what I wanted, maybe a few changes here and there but other than that it was perfect, I’ve had it now for almost two months and its holding up fine. I check it regularly as you should with any bmx part if you’re giving them the abuse of regular intense riding, but its just great!

DewTour

There are 12 differences, can you spot them all?

WE INTERVIEWED MONGOOSE RIDER GREG ILLINGWORTH AT DEW TOUR You recently attended the dew tour in San Fancisco, For those of them who don’t know, can you explain what the Dew Tour is? The Dew Tour is the premiere action sports tour event in the world right now; It encompasses a wide range of disciplines and has stops located throughout the US during the year. Dew Tour showcased a new discipline in San Francisco, how was it competing in a new event like Street Style? It was really awesome, Street Style is an event that really suits my riding; it includes the more gnarly high speed elements of street riding and that’s what I like. Which other riders were you competing against? I was competing against some of the best in the world…. Garret Reynolds, Gary Young, Cory Martinez, Dakota Roche, Rob Wise, Chad Kerley and Dennis Enarson to name but a few. I was definitely nervous being in such esteemed company, all the guys I was in the event with were all riders whom I admire and inspire me. How did it differ from riding a standard street course at a comp? Typically most street events focus on the technical aspect of riding, this event was more orientated towards the high-speed gap based style of street riding. This was really fun for me as I tend to go for that style of street riding when I’m out filming with my friends. The course was laid out on a steep downhill street, just within sight of the Golden Gate bridge, the organizers had included loads of typical real world street obstacles such as benches, wheelchair access hops and handrails. They also had some step up step down obstacles made from shipping containers, semi trucks and Toyota Prius’s that were really instersting to ride! How much of a challenge was it riding it brakeless? It was definitely challenging! I had to plan out all the individual elements of my run in order to control my speed down the course. It felt natural though as I’m used to bombing hills brakeless. Can you see Street Style catching on and becoming a new discipline adopted by other comps? I really hope so, I think the event was really entertaining for everyone involved. It had elements that could appeal to average people tuning in on TV and the guys who are dedicated BMX fans. Aside from riding in the Street Style, what other events did you enjoy watching? It was great to watch all the events! When you’re at the Dew Tour your watching the best guys in the world do their thing. I really enjoyed watching the BMX dirt particularly, the jumps were absolutely massive! I was stoked to watch my team mate Ben Wallace blast the jumps 6 feet higher than everyone else! Favourite experience from San Francisco outside of the Dew Tour? Cruising around with my friend Blaze checking out the sights SF had to offer. The boat cruise Blaze and I took with Ben Wallace and his lady was really cool too. Seeing Alcatraz and the famous Golden Gate Bridge up close was incredible. It’s been a pretty busy year, what’s next for you? I’m retreating away from the British winter back home to South Africa for December and some of January to catch up with my family and friends. 2013 is promising to be a very busy and interesting year too. I have loads of video projects in the works so I’m looking forward to riding a lot and seeing new places.

2012 SEASON REVIEW Orange monkey Team MANAgement Paul Beales gives a review on the 2012 SEASON After the huge success of 2011, our first year as a professional UCI team, we were extremely excited to start 2012 with a bang! It was for this reason we decided to start our year in South Africa with a 5 week training camp near the home of our South African National U23 Champion, Rourke Croeser. This would be the first time we had not started the year in Cyprus at the Sunshine Cup but would provide us with the perfect base to go into the first round of the UCI World Cup. Our commonwealth Games prospect, Ben Roff would go to South Africa earlier than his team mates, New Year’s Day in fact and spend the entire winter with Rourke preparing for the long season ahead. He was joined by team mates and management in February and the team would race in the Giba Gorge, Karkloof and KZN Pietermaritzburg races before going into the World Cup on what many described as the toughest in the world. The team were on fire in these early season races with everyone picking up podiums and top results before tragedy struck in practice for KZN Pietermaritzburg – Ben, in the form of his life broke his wrist on the tricky step descent leaving him heartbroken and unable to race for a chance at entering his first World Cup. In the World Cup itself it seemed our luck had run out. Alex crashed out of the leading group in Juniors and Dave had a tough day in his first Elite World Cup finishing just outside the top 60. For Rourke, though, it was utter devastation as he finished the race in tears having been in the leading group of 4 Under 23’s before crashing hard and pulling himself together to scream back to an outstanding 17th place in front of his home fans. It could have been a very different day. The podium beckons. We had the pleasure of working with outstanding sponsors once again in 2012, keeping on board all but a few from 2011 and adding Primalwear Clothing, Prologo Saddles and Madison Shimano to an already impressive line up!

Rourke Croeser, U23 Champion

Tragedy struck for Ben Roff, who broke his wrist

The big news through the winter was the signing of Bronze World Junior medallist and top British athlete, David Fletcher who was a superb addition to a strong squad and bought with him a wealth of knowledge and some seriously big power! Dave was a first year Senior and would go on to record some amazing results throughout a busy and testing year. The rest of the team largely stayed the same. We said goodbye to Chris Andrews who had done a fantastic job for us and Paul continued on a domestic level whilst mixing racing with team management. Early season races would go well for the team with our first National Elite podium and triple podium with Alex, Dave and Rourke in Dalby Forest as well as some top results at the World Cup in Belgium, but the highlight of early season racing would be the Belgacom in Stoumont, Belgium where Rourke would take a 1st place Under 23 and 4th overall up against Julien Absalon and Maxime Marrotte! It was not always joy though as we were denied a first Elite win at our British National Series twice in succession with both Rourke and Dave puncturing whilst in the lead at Scotland and Hopton Woods respectively. It was agony for Ben after recovering from the broken wrist only to have a succession of illnesses keeping him off the bike and a dip in form for all our riders saw us record our worst results at a World Cup in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

Bronze World Junior medallist & British athlete, David Fletcher joined the team

This was not to last though as the mid-season blip ended and Dave stormed to a phenomenal result in La Bresse World Cup, France from a grid position of 103 to 44th! Rourke became African Continental Champion in Mauritius and Alex won his first Junior National race of the year in Hopton Woods. The team would then make history by becoming the first British UCI cross-country team to make their way to America and Canada for the World Cups (as far as we know) with both star riders in attendance. It would be a mixed time across the Atlantic with highs and lows but a huge learning curve and an inspiring time for both riders and management as we look to move the team forward and fulfil our dreams. We were privileged to have a small insight into the workings of British Cycling throughout the season and thank Phil Dixon and his team for their support and encouragement in us throughout the year. More misery for the team at a World Cup in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic

The National Championships would be yet another highlight in a fully packed year for the team with both Rourke and Dave excelling. Rourke retained his National stripes under huge pressure and off the back of a mammoth amount of travelling again showing his class whilst Dave came second only to the “the killa” – 3 x Olympian, Commonwealth Games Gold medallist and established pro, Liam Killeen. These were two phenomenal results and gave us immense pride in our athletes. The season had been long, starting way back in South Africa at the beginning of February but after 6 months of full on racing it was time for the biggest one of the lot, the World Championships! The boys had just enough in the tank to give this a real shot and proved what they are made of with two great results, Dave taking 44th in his first as a Senior and Rourke 18th in Under 23. Ben had by now had some decent results back on the bike and already thinking to next year as he looks to chase a place at the Commonwealth games in 2014. Alex struggled towards the back end of the season but will no doubt come back stronger for the experiences he gained in 2012. Paul had a mixed year but a highlight was being chosen to film the previews for the Olympics at Hadleigh Farm!

The National Championships would be yet another highlight for the team

Paul and Rourke also had the honour of representing the team in China at the Guiyang Invitational Tournament in September which was one of the biggest privilege’s the team has had. Not only was it attended by top teams such as Rabobank-Giant and Colnago-Suditrol but we were made to feel like kings with a superb opening ceremony, police escorts, 5 star accommodation and a fantastic race with fantastic people. A truly eye opening and inspirational experience that we will never forget. The season was rounded off with a 100 mile race at the Kielder 100 where amazingly after such a long hard season Rourke took a 3rd place finish the gruelling event put on by our top sponsor SIP Events. Rourke described the race as the toughest he had ever done! One for the bucket list we think! So what now for Orange Monkey…?

Paul and Rourke represented the team in China at the Guiyang Invitational Tournament

The team will go through some transition in the close season and you can expect to see new faces, sponsors and a slight change in strategy as we look to keep the progression going. 2013 will be our third year as a professional UCI team and having narrowly missed out on two athletes going to London 2012 our focus will now turn to Rio 2016 but first that coveted Elite Team status that we strive to achieve.

It’s been a journey. 2012 has seen tears, jubilation, celebration, ecstasy and despair. We have and will work continuously to fulfil the high standards and targets we have set ourselves and with it hope to change the perception of Cross-country Mountain biking in Britain. We thank you all for your support, encouragement and look forward to a bright future! Race hard…. Have Fun! Orange Monkey

GT RACING UK ED’S MUDDY HELL

ED MCPARLAND REPORTS ON HIS STORMING PERFORMANCE AT THE 2012 KNOG MUDDY-HELL CYCLOCROSS RACE By Ed McParland GT Racing Team Rider We arrived in darkness a,id the sounds of falling rain, but kitted up and prepared for the onslaught! Having done a quick lap between the other races, I settled on a low pressure for my Schwalbe Racing Ralph tubs, ideal for the awesome course laid out; hurdles, sleepers, a huge scaffolding bridge, table tops, a wall of death, pump jumps, riding up the banking of the famous Herne Hill Velodrome track itself and lots of sloppy mud were on the agenda. I fitted two USE Exposure Diablo lights, one on my helmet and the other on my trusty GTR Type CX – thus giving me near perfect night vision! The race began and I had the worst start possible! Sitting in around 20th I had a lot of work to do, but slowly started picking riders off. Soon I was back up at the forefront of the race, in 3rd, some 10 seconds off the leaders, consisting of Hugo Robinson (XRT Elmy Cycles) and the living legend that is Nick Craig (Scott UK). I was joined by another rider and we battled on for the whole race; on the last lap it would come down to the sprint. The mud was beginning to stick and my gears were starting to jump, it was going to be a close call. But my Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals were clearing perfectly and I managed to conserve some energy, popping out early to win the sprint quite convincingly. Having settled for 3rd I later learnt that Hugo Robinson had pulled out of the race and I therefore finished 2nd! I think it was the best ‘cross race of the year for me so far, a brilliant course, brilliant atmosphere and the good result was a bonus. It was a credit to the organisers and sponsors Rollapalluza and Knog. Ed.

A HUGE congratulations to Ed on his great result and a thank you to our sponsors for their support.

FIRST AND SECOND FOR GT FACTORY RACING AS DAN ATHERTON AND MARC BEAUMONT SMASH THE 2012 ASIA PACIFIC DOWNHILL CHALLENGE All Photos: Fraser Britton Triumphant return to Downhill for Dan. Dan and Marc triumphed in Cikole, West Java yesterday despite the wettest conditions that either of them has ever raced. Asia’s No.1 downhill race was presented by Specialized as part of the country’s 6th annual bicycle day and attracted an ecstatic Indonesian crowd. Both riders have been blown away by the welcome they received in Indonesia and the amazing support that they have experienced. Dan’s 2012 season has focused on the new discipline of Enduro, culminating in a win at Superenduro Pro 6 at Finale Ligure, the climax of the Enduro season. His Asia Pacific victory has particularly pleased the fans, as it represents his first downhill podium since his catastrophic neck injury in 2010. Marc said “Dan rode really well. I’m so glad that we got the chance to visit Indonesia, I’ve been blown away by how intense and enthusiastic the fans are over here, they are so knowledgeable about our sport.” “ The support has been amazing”, Dan agreed, “It’s been great to have this opportunity to give something back to Shimano who’ve been a solid support to Atherton Racing for years.” Indonesia’s tropical climate brought intense rainstorms that disrupted practice and left the track extraordinarily slick. Both riders were happy with their seeding runs, which left Dan in 1st place and Marc in 3rd, with Mitch Ropelato in 2nd. “I would say that is some of the most slippery dirt I have ever ridden on” commented Marc. Race day brought more hard rain, which continued throughout the whole event. Both riders admitted that the extreme conditions left them dreading the race run, but their wealth of race experience and well-known technical skills stood them in good stead. Marc said “The race couldn’t have gone better really - I had a few small goggle issues and a few small mistakes but those were to be expected given the conditions. I’m so pumped that GT Factory racing came away with the 1, 2.” Dan added “I knew that Marc was going strong so I just tried to smash the corners as hard as I dared; after the first two corners it started to feel like fun!” The riders will now travel to Bali for a few days well-earned rest before returning to Atherton HQ and the rest of their Winter training.

REDBULL WEAVERS REVIEW Red Bull x Charge Bikes Weavers was a dual slalom downhill bike race like no other; it put rider’s skills and precision to the ultimate test. The course was cut into the shoulder-high wheat crop, and featured steep declines, blind corners and tight-lines to test the mettle of the competitors. With all of the bikes having the same simple spec and gearing, we stripped back off-road racing to its roots with equipment playing no part in rider advantage. With riders reaching speeds of 40mph, the stage was set for one of the most adrenaline fuelled downhill bike events to date. Charge Bikes assembled 12 Custom bikes with the help of SRAM and Rockshox. The idea was to strip back the bikes to the bare minimum and specify competitors must either meet the specification criteria of: one standardised gear, 29” wheels, rear brake only and only rigid or front suspension…or use one of the 12 Charge Bikes available for anyone to use. These bikes were custom painted 2013 Cooker single speed frames that used custom 60mm Reba Rockshox forks and SRAM / Truvativ build kit, the perfect tools for the job. The original event date had to be postponed due to horrendous weather, so we were over the moon to see just under 70 competitors turn up on a gloriously sunny weekday some four days later in the heart of the Somerset countryside. 70 riders were whittled down to 32 in a series of timed qualifying runs and the final 32 seeded on their runs. Amongst the lucky finalists were professional trials riders Chris Akrigg and Chris Doney, downhillers Neil Donaghue, Dave Wardell, Joshua Bryceland, dirt jumpers Ollie Fielder and Ollie Wilkins, BMX riders Kye and Leo Forte and Lewis Lacey. These professionals were joined by a good contingent of local heroes and amateur riders that had posted impressive qualifying times. In quick fire knockout rounds, the final 4 riders were determined for the semi finals. Lewis Lacey took on GT’s Dave Wardell who crashed near the finish line putting Lacey through to the final. The other semis final saw Santa Cruz’s Josh Bryceland knock out Red Bull’s Kye Forte.

WINNERS PODIUM: 1st Josh Bryceland, 2nd Lewis Lacey, 3rd Dave Wardell & 4th Kye Forte (not pictured)

In the final Josh and Lewis battled it out as the sun set over the field of corn. Josh took the win, the custom Charge gold bike and £1000 to the delight of the sun kissed crowd.

THE PRIZE: 1st prize was a Charge blue Cooker with Gold decals.

CHARGE AT RAPHA SUPERCROSS By Chris Metcalfe • Charge Team Rider Continued from sport cover story Straight after the race, myself and Ollie hit the M1 to get to central London for Rollapaluza’s Muddy Hell at Herne Hill. This night-time ‘cross race is now well established at the scariest, gnarliest, darkest and most technical race of the year, and after a second place finish to living legend Nick Craig last year I wanted to put in a good showing. Unfortunately an upside down visit to the bramble bushes on lap 1 put me well out of contention almost immediately. With Nick Craig, top juniors Hugo Robinson and Ed McPartland as well as the best of the London riders pushing on, it took the entire race for me to plug away until making it to 4th place at the chequered flag. Muddy, cold, but exhilarated I did what all proper riders do, and demolished an entire Dominos pizza and hit the hay. Finally on Sunday, the 3rd race of the weekend, and CHARGE bikes lined up for the grand finale at Alexandra Palace. Big crowds, slippy corners and stiff climbs meant a tough day out. Re-invigorated with the triumphant return of Jon Watson from his death bed, and Seth Smith loving the hilly course, CHARGE bikes put on a magnificent display of trying really hard where there were spectators were in sight, and recovering elsewhere. Having trashed his bike the night before, sadly Ollie had to give up his place to pit-man James Thompson. Although he was in Intensive care just 6 weeks ago with 3 broken ribs, fractured collar bone and a punctured lung, James was keen to show Matt that only wimps let life-threatening chest injuries hold them back, and that he was the hardest Northerner to guest for team CHARGE. For those wondering about Lawrence Frost, he was last seen circling the tequila shortcut in the novice race long after the Elite race had finished.

CHARGE AT RAPHA SUPERCROSS By Chris Metcalfe Charge Team Rider A week to the day after round 1 of the Rapha Supercross series, and team CHARGE bikes found ourselves once again lined up against the country’s most talented cross riders at Misterston Hall, Leicestershire. A superb venue for a ‘cross race, conditions were bright and fresh, the course fast and flowing. Northern soft-man Jon Watson was incapacitated with a severe case of mAnthrax, so we drafted in last minute replacement Oliver Watson, age 21 and 3/4 from Derby, a legend in his own front room. Not to be outdone by Jon, fellow ‘proper’ Northerner Matt Denby also succumbed to illness/injury as a previous rib injury struck him down in warm up and was shipped to hospital . Down to just 4 riders, Ollie stepped up to the mark, scorching round the course for a top 15 finish in a seriously good field of riders. Full Story on Page 63
