Free speech & advertising There has been a big uproar over a billboard a jeweler ran in North Carolina. Many of you have probably heard about it. I've gotten notes from many customers, a few calls, asking if I had heard about it.
Many have assumed that it's my board. Well, 'Sometimes it's okay to throw rocks at pretty girls' is a board that I have done for a lot of jewelers. Print, radio, TV, all the mediums I've adapted it to. This jeweler took out 'pretty,' and I guess called it their own. The jeweler's reaction was too typical: they tucked tail and ran. Apologized profusely. Admitted their 'insensitivity.' Gave in to the likes even of Chelsea Clinton who generously tweeted her one bit worth of advice. The better approach? They should have stood their ground. But too late. They gave in. They 'fed the frenzy.' Did that board -- 'Sometimes it's okay to throw rocks at girls' -- with pictures of colored gems, encourage violence against women? Did it make light of women who are stoned to death in certain religions and parts of the world? Did it in ANY way condone hurting women? Give me a break. The reaction from the 'sensitive' segment of our society was, and is, ridiculous. The thing is, you have to stand up for the right to say stuff. There is not a constitutional right to 'not be offended.' But there will be, in time, if we continue to give ground. It's closer than we think. Do I write stuff that I know will offend people? Never. Have people taken offense at things I've written? Of course. Hardware store for women has gotten the dander up of quite a few through the 21 years that idea has floated around out there. And 'Sometimes it's okay to throw rocks at pretty girls' has stirred some negative reaction in other places, at other times. It happens when you say something. It's the price of saying anything, really -- anything that will break through and reach people. Lance Buttars owns Molinelli's Jewelers in Pocatello ID. He's been running my stuff for quite a long time. He had a digital ad somewhere, and a woman called, and she was 'offended.' Lance basically said, sorry you had that reaction to it. But 'buckle up, because there's more coming!' You might not think that advertising is on the front lines of free speech in this country. But it is. And you are. Stand your ground. Exercise YOUR free speech -- not to intentionally offend anyone, though we have the right (to date; it is diminishing!) to do that. That's not my game or yours. But you have the right to have fun with people. And if some people make stretches that are miles long to connect 'throwing rocks' -- obviously referring to the gems -- to abusing women, that is THEIR issue. And that's MY one bit worth of thoughts on this! Carry on! Love your customers like no one else's business! Live and sell and work with passion! And have some fun with all this stuff!
