Briefly explain your long- and short-term goals in regards to your career in the retail jewelry industry

My long term goal in the jewelry industry is to keep growing and continuously evolve with the industries latest trends and technology. The only way for me to do that is seeking programs and conferences such as the RJO Experience to get my feet wet to keep myself grounded and current with the industry Ultimately it would be a dream to be a well rounded educated jeweler to add onto my 7 years of fine jewelry sales experience

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

At my current employment with Michael & Son's I am actively participating in our locations annual Solace Tree foundation https://www.solacetree.org/. The Solace Tree is a non-profit organization that serves children, teens and adults in the Northern Nevada and Central California. All the children and teens served by The Solace Tree are coping with overwhelming grief issues from loss due to illness and death. I feel it is important to give back to the community that helps keep the business going generation after generation.

Briefly explain your long- and short-term goals in regards to your career in the retail jewelry industry

Currently, I am working as the manager at a mom-and-pop jewelry store; I started my career in jewelry with Signet Jewelers, it was through their education and experiences discovered my passion for jewelry! I have a college history in 3D modeling, I want to use this knowledge to be able to further my career in fabricating pieces alongside my owner who is a jeweler I would like to, in the long term, be able to produce an independently designed line In the short term if I had knowledge of how to use CAD software more effectively I would be able to further my customer experiences by producing their renders for custom-designed jewelry pieces in-house which would make communicating CAD changes easier for everyone!

RJO Foundation Scholarship Application (FALL 2023) 11 / 64

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

I actively participate in the RJO and JHJ Facebook groups to use my knowledge to try to help other jewelers solve problems. I happily provide my knowledge to members of my local community as well!

The biggest community project I am involved in is that our store carries a fundraiser line for a local no-kill shelter (CARA, Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption) On top of this line, we attend various fundraiser events for them such as an annual 5K, and quarterly trade shows which 100% of our profits from the show go back to the shelter

As a local business, we should support our community, to show our neighbors that we are there should they need any assistance, even outside of jewelry!

Q22

From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your continued education?

This scholarship would genuinely be my only chance at attending these courses I am disabled for various medical reasons and the cost of health insurance leaves little to no room for anything outside of a car payment and insurance. The jewelry industry is a fantastic industry for handicapped individuals such as myself! Even when I have difficulties walking and require a cane I can confidently turn to my work at my desk and be assured that there is still achievable tasks at hand.

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

As a store we participate in many, if not all main street events. Spencer main street puts on social events to get the community more involved with our local stores. I enjoy working these events because we get to socialize with members of main street, as well as people coming to participate in the activities. These events are important because it gets people to think about shopping small, and it creates foot traffic on Main Street. My boss Tom is also a Member of Main Street, Ambassadors, Kiwanis, City Council, Etc. He keeps us very up to date on what goes on in the community and how we can help improve it I hope to be as involved in the community as he is in the future!

Q22

This scholarship would help me greatly to complete the two courses requested I plan to complete both in a two week period If awarded this scholarship it would assist me for travel and lodging expenses if necessary It would also help from a tuition standpoint, each course is about $1,500 Any sort of assistance I could get would go a long way in this endeavor

RJO Scholarship Committee,

I have worked with Emily Fralick over the past 5 years. She has grown immensely since then, in regard to salesmanship, maturity and education. She has taken advantage of educational and advancement opportunities in our company. She is incredibly reliable and has a strong commitment to Wickersham and the jewelry industry. Her genuine personality and kindness has not gone unnoticed with her customers and associates, she strives to help those around her in any way she can.

She has recently received a promotion and now holds the role of merchandiser at Wickersham Jewelry. This has given her the opportunity to join in buying shows, inventory, buying goods and understanding the industry in a different light.

Emily has taken the initiative to have her GIA diamond essentials and GIA colored stone essentials courses completed and I believe she would be a great candidate to receive an RJO scholarship so she can add GIA colored stones to her education. It will help be able identify quality stones and assist in buying quality merchandise.

Thank you,

My short term goal is to acquire the relevant knowledge on this fantastic equipment (laser welder) available in our industry. The laser welder has quickly become my favorite piece of equipment of all. Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

Currently I am secretary of the Georgia Jewelers Association, while I have not been in this position long, it has instilled the importance of not just my own work, but also working as a team. The more I am in this industry, the more I realize that nobody does this alone and we all need a little help sometimes. Through this organization I have built wonderful connections with people in various branches of the industry that will last for years to come.

Hodges Jewelry Co, Pelham, Ga.

Reference scholarship application for Katherine Bennett. I have hired many people in my 49 years at Hodges Jewelry Co. and I can honestly say she is by far my best hire. She has all the qualities I look for in staff. Katherine is a self starter and never needs prompting to complete or start a task. She is loyal, personable, driven and smart. Katherine had some retail experience and also has worked in a watch kiosk which was very helpful. She is good with customers in sales, but her heart is in the art of jewelry repairs. Although she has taken 2 courses in jewelry repair her desire is to get all the advanced training available. We recently purchased a laser welder for her use and she has learned to use it on a limited basis. If she can get this scholarship it would certainly enhance her value to us and help her in her future endeavors in our industry.

Katherine future plans are to concentrate on all facets of jewelry repair and sales on a limited basis only. If she is fortunate to receive this scholarship she will be thrilled to add this training to her resume. I highly recommend she receives all due consideration as someone young who wants to make her career in our industry.

I am involved in volunteering my time with the Marshfield Youth Hockey Association. I volunteer my time to help coach the youth into amazing players and people. It is important to me to help build the youth hockey organization, but I also find it important to help grow the youth girl's teams. I am also active in the community through 4-H, we as a group serve at the C O M E meal as much as possible We do park clean up at a local park every fall and the roads near the clubhouse Through the years we have made dog treats for the Humane Society and volunteered our time to help clean kennels and cat cages at the human society We also prepare baskets for the children at the Marshfield Clinic who stay at the Ronald McDonald house and make throw blankets for a local assisted living group

From a financial standpoint I am building my life in various ways I have just graduated in May with my business management degree, and I have recently bought a 100+ year old house. RJO Scholarship Committee,

I have worked with Paige Bauer for the past year and a half as her general manager and direct report. When Paige first started with Wickersham she started as a part time sales associate, her availability opened shortly thereafter and she moved into a full-time sales associate role. I knew when I met her, she had natural leadership skills and proved she had the drive and ability to achieve her goals.

We created a management training program for Paige where she transitioned from manager in training, assistant manager, and after she graduated college in the spring of 2023, store manager of our Marshfield location. Since then, she has proven that she is driven and has initiative for not only herself but also helping others succeed and find passion in jewelry. She works hard and adds value to everything she does which is a great example for her team and our organization.

I believe Paige would be a great candidate to receive an RJO scholarship based on her ability to apply what she learns and eagerness to learn more about the jewelry industry. She is an asset to our company and we would love to see her expand her knowledge!

Thank you,

Briefly explain your long- and short-term goals in regards to your career in the retail jewelry industry

I started working at Jo & Co. Jewelers just over a year ago and knew almost instantly that this is where I am meant to be. I absolutely love working in customer service but I also love working with jewelry and continuing to learn about it everyday. I foresee myself always being in the retail jewelry industry, hopefully remaining with the same company I am now with more responsibilities Over the next few years my goals within my career are to further my jewelry education through GIA’s classes, as well as learning from my peers

RJO Foundation Scholarship Application (FALL 2023) 43 / 64

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

My favorite way to participate in the community is through my church. We host many events for the community to participate in to provide family activities to those who cannot afford to do so. It also helps to keep our community close. Although I love doing this for the community, what I enjoy the most is being able to have an impact on people’s day to day lives. Many people get in situations where they are unable to provide for themselves and their children. This can affect their mental health and ability to provide clean living spaces for their families We try to help these people in a way that would be most beneficial to their needs Sometimes that can mean giving clean bedding, a warm meal, or even just helping someone clean their space to make everyday life more manageable I mainly do this through the church but I also try to help people as much as possible in day to day life I live in an area that has a large population of homeless individuals Although, I can only afford to be so generous, whether it is handing out sandwiches or giving a couple dollars here and there, I do try to do as much as I can

Q22

From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your continued education?

Financially, this scholarship would help me to be able to complete the colored stones class through GIA With the help of the scholarship covering this class, I would be able to use the funds I would be using for the colored essentials class for the diamond essentials class and become an accredited jewelry professional.

Dear Members of the RJO Foundation Board,

It is my pleasure to write this on behalf of Caroline Adkins. I was blessed to have her join our team June 1, 2022. From the very beginning, with no jewelry experience, I realized she “got it”. Her ability to work with customers is amazing. Every bit of information and education she gains she uses and grows with it. She is thirsting to know more.

Caroline is a very hard worker. She is dedicated employee and an asset to our team. She plans to grow with our company and we are so excited for that. It is now our responsibility to give her the tools she needs to be successful.

I appreciate the efforts of the Foundation to help provide education to our RJO family members. It is my hope that Caroline will be a recipient of one of these scholarships.

Thanks for your hard work and your consideration,

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

I am part of the DC Everest Optimist club, which provides scholarships to local students in the DC Everest school district. We participate in multiple fundraisers throughout the year to earn the scholarship funds and every other week have meetings with other foundations helping children in our community to learn about how ourselves and others can be more impactful. I am moving back into the secretarial position for 2024 to provide more of an impact for the organization. I believe it is important to show care for the community and the futures of the children in those communities Being able to be part of something where you get to reward those for hard work is incredibly rewarding It also is a great experience to see the talent and heart the students have and their desire to make a difference, either for themselves or those around them

Q22

From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your continued education?

The scholarship program has helped me in the past to be able to expedite my learning process The longer time passes by without doing something or learning more about it the harder it is to retain and utilize the information, this scholarship would help me move forward in the completion of my graduate gemologist degree through GIA and assist in being more capable of using the skills I learn on a daily basis. Thank you for your consideration!

Q20

Briefly explain your long- and short-term goals in regards to your career in the retail jewelry industry

I have owned and operated my store for ten years, and my long-term goal is to keep my business viable, profitable, and active. In the much longer term, I would love to continue to be vital and active in the industry after I someday retire from day-to-day operations of my own store; working on a consultant level may be a good fit in later years Currently, we are proud to be the leading source of fine gems and jewelry in our area, providing the best possible customer service With that, my short term goal is to earn a Graduate Gemologist distinction in order to better serve my customers and the jewelry industry as a whole I believe education is important in our industry; knowledge is priceless!

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences

I proudly support multiple nonprofit organizations within my community, I coined our community's slogan, "I Believe in Glendive"; I volunteer on multiple boards and community-building committees. I believe being involved in my community on a volunteer and personal level is so important, as it helps put a face to my business, which I believe in turn creates a feeling, for the public, of accessibility to fine jewelry, since people know "their jeweler" personally

Q22

From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your continued education?

Our company always offers paid educational experiences for our employees - including classes, summits, buying shows, RJO Next Gen Experience, etc Since we value education so highly, we make room in our budget for these important expenses However, my own education takes a back seat, sometimes, to the educational needs of my staff A scholarship would help make it easier to commit to furthering my own educational goals!

Q20

Briefly explain your long- and short-term goals in regards to your career in the retail jewelry industry.

Having been a sole proprietor working into fine jewelry and now working for a fine jewelry store, I would say my short term goals are to learn all I can about cut, clarity, history, and technique in diamonds and precious gemstones As far as long term goals, I would like to apply my knowledge within Ken’s store for more confidence in sales and all around customer service

RJO Foundation Scholarship Application (FALL 2023) 59 / 64

Q21

What participation in extracurricular/community activities are you involve and briefly discuss the importance of these experiences.

As far as extra curricular activities, I have a lot of experience doing trade shows and have worked with the public creating one of a kind pieces. I’ve begun polishing and shaping (lapidary work) responsibly sourced stones and have learned a fair amount about where they come from just by looking at a stone. I would love to learn more about diamonds and the history of the diamond industry, as those subjects are extremely fascinating to me.

Q22

From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your continued education?

My entire career in jewelry has been a slow one, since I’ve had to buy all of my own tools and have been mostly self taught I don’t have extra streams of income, so I’ve had to personally survive from my own sales rather than pouring my money solely back into my business, and progress at a slower pace Now that I work in a more professional environment, I would say that a scholarship for this course would be incredibly helpful in helping me save money for personal living expenses while learning all that I can about diamonds and the diamond industry

Hello Connie & Scholarship Committee,

It is with confidence and enthusiasm that I offer my recommendation for you to consider a scholarship for my employee August Hess to take the GIA diamond course. She has been working for me less than a year, but has been in the jewelry business full time for over 8 years as a designer/craftsman, selling her work at juried art shows, and now wants to get off the bench and help manage our store as well as sell jewelry and consult with our customers. She is bright, dedicated and has a deep desire to learn more about diamonds and the jewelry industry. Our hope, and her goal, is that she will become the manager of the store in the future. I believe she is a great candidate for the RJO foundation's mission. I'd be happy to answer any follow up questions you have for her.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

All the best,

Apland Jewelers
