In our book, January is the perfect time to enjoy the Southern Splendor of Savannah, Georgia. It’s when we can escape the sub-zero North and the humidity of the summer South. It’s a win-win! And winning is what you’ll be doing at our Southern Splendor buying show. Our vendors will have trending merchandise to fill a showcase – or two, if you want to put your new purchase voucher to work to save up to an additional 2 percent on everything there. When you’re not buying, you’ll be learning and working on ideas to expand your customer base and revenues. We’ve got speakers and conferences lined up to make the most of your promotions, advertising ideas, social media, staff and inventory.

For off hours, we’ve got optional entertainment planned that includes a ghost tour, movie tour and haunted pub crawl. And wait until Sunday night rolls around. EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS 1) MUST-KNOW STRATEGIES FOR HIRING SUPER SALESPEOPLE AND BUILDING HIGH-PERFORMANCE TEAMS Kate Peterson Performance Concepts, Inc. The task of hiring top salespeople is among the most challenging in our industry today. Experience, personality, skill, education … what exactly do you look for? How do you know when you have it? Once you hire that potential superstar, how can you ensure that she is brought up to speed quickly and efficiently – and that her talents are used to their fullest advantage as part of your team? It’s a fact: the best people demand the best leaders – and are most productive as part of a high performance team. It is easy to quantify the benefits of building a high performance team. From top line revenue to bottom line savings, the numbers will tell the story. Those of us who have been a part of a high performing, innovative team know the exhilaration that comes from improving client service, cutting out unnecessary processes and costs, and increasing sales and profitability. Of course, teams like these don’t just happen by chance. In this program, you will learn best practices for hiring the best and for creating an innovative team that not only vastly improves your business but also energizes your associates and your clients alike.
2) THE LANGUAGE OF DESIGN: HOW TO BUY AND SELL DESIGNER JEWELRY Cindy Edelstein, Jewelers Resource Bureau Cindy is the go-to person in the industry regarding designer jewelry. She runs the designer section at major shows, she runs designerDAY, and she is frequently quoted on the subject of designers by industry and fashion magazines. Cindy will walk you through a storyboard of the leading jewelry designers to help you become familiar with looks specific to certain designers and to trends they created. She will explore up-and-comers, all with a grounded understanding of what she calls “the language of design” and how you can use it in your store on a daily basis.
3, 6) AD IDEAS BRAINSTORMING AND COLLABORATION
(repeats at 11:30 a.m.) James Grot, Grot Imaging Studio What if another RJO jeweler had a great idea for an ad and was willing to share it? What if an RJO vendor was willing to hear several great ideas and explore how to bring them to fruition? And what if you had very affordable access to the outcome? In this session, brainstorm ad ideas with other RJO retailers and let collaboration be a tool for business growth.
Sunday Evening Gala & Award Presentation You’ll definitely know you’re in Savannah at this show’s Sunday Night Spectacular. We’re planning a mash-up of high society, antebellum southern living and the let-your-mulletdown fun of southern cooking and partying. First up: the elegant splendor of Savannah, with the front ballroom set up as a southern mansion. Enjoy a sophisticated cocktail and mingle in the parlor lounge, filled with ornate Victorian furniture, rugs and lamps. Then: Find your way to the back of the ballroom, where behind the iron gates awaits one southern garden party to remember. Don’t be shy; dig in to a huge spread of delicious, classic southern dishes. Crack into boiled red crawfish, butter some hot corn of the cob and enjoy other perks of southern living. Once the grub’s gone, the backyard dance party starts! When it’s time to sit one out, try out the fortune tellers, palm readers and street magicians roaming through the party. Make sure your underhand pitching arm is in shape, because they’ll be beanbags aplenty to play some wicked good games of cornhole (Google it!). RJO Photo Booth We’re also putting a southern spin on the RJO photo booth! You’ll be able to dress up as southern belles and gentlemen callers, wild cowboys and cowgirls or ornery outlaws posing at the bar of a southern saloon. 6:30 - 10 p.m.; Westin, Grand Ballroom 6:30 - 7 p.m., Reception 7 p.m., Dinner 7:30 p.m., Entertainment Casual dress attire is appropriate. The event is meant to be a time for you to kick back and relax after a busy day on the show floor.

Previous trip-takers will be there to fill you in and tell you the ins and outs of a successful trip. During the reception, both newbies and trip veterans will have the opportunity to produce a free, personalized commercial – transferred to DVD – to promote your Antwerp connection. 7:15 - 8:30 p.m. Reception – Westin, Harbor Ballroom 7 - 9 p.m. Personalized DVD Filming – Westin, Moorings Room Filming will also be available from 1 - 5 p.m. Sunday at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center, Meeting Room 106
SUNDAY Member & Vendor Joint Breakfast and Roundtables Get the big picture of the jewelry business by attending our member/vender breakfast and roundtables. Putting both sides of the aisle together always leads to better understanding of what the other side endures, more compassion and several new ideas on how both vendors and jewelers can help each other be more successful. Remember, we’re in it together. RJO will place members and vendors at designated tables with discussion questions to help members and vendors be better partners. Mary Peterson will facilitate.
EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS 4) THINK INSIDE THE BOX: DIAMONDS AND COLOR YOU NEED TO SELL NOW Diana Jarrett, Heritage Gems In today’s tough margins market, it’s what’s inside your brick and mortar that maintains client loyalty while garnering new customers. We’ll explore today’s best-selling diamond and color goods that separate your business from internet-only merchants. We’ll discuss consumer demand for more individualized and meaningful jewelry – whether it be out-of-the-norm diamonds at various price points, or unusual, exotic, yet affordable color. Thinking inside the box affords you a new selling proposition that fortifies your revenue stream with faithful customers and newbies.
5) THE CUSTOMER ISN’T ALWAYS RIGHT AND OTHER PERUSINGS Chuck Koehler, CMK Co. Have you read Chuck’s columns in Mid-America Jewelery News and Southern Jewelry News? Like you, he has first-hand experience, but he’s willing to talk about it.
7) STEPPING UP TO LEAD YOUR STAFF Brad Huisken, IAS Training Sometimes staff doesn’t reach sales goals because their leader has faltered. Industry trainer Brad Huisken seeks only store owners and managers for this session, because he’s going to shine a light of accountability for those who manage staff. Expect to hear about more than setting goals. From modeling behaviors, to empowering staff without undercutting them, to hiring effectively and training well, Brad’s topics are aimed at helping you be the leader your staff needs and expects.
8) COMMUNITY ROI – TURNING CUSTOMERS INTO YOUR ADVOCATES WITH SOCIAL MEDIA Kaylee Jeske, Petey Peterson, Samanth Peterson With social media, it’s easy for businesses to get left behind in the world of instant connections, updates and breaking news. EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS 9) GETTING MORE YESES!
11) ENGAGING LONG-TIME STAFF
Bill Gallagher, Gallagher Training Come learn and practice an easier, more natural and lasting way to get a YES to your proposals. This highly interactive workshop will train you and leave you with immediate takeaway value for your most pressing needs. You will also be able to easily share the new approach with your whole team. There are both strategies and techniques that you can implement immediately.
Brad Huisken, IAS Training Many RJO jewelers have staff that has been on the floor with them for many years. One gets weary opening and closing with inventory that is aged, with lines that haven’t changed, with routines of business that can feel like a rut. Don’t you? What can you do now to re-engage your long-time staff and revitalize your business? If they matter enough to your business to remain employed with you, they matter enough to bring the excitement of successful sales back to life. Brad often asks salespeople, “Do you have ten years of experience or one year ten times?” Think about it.
10) JEWELCONNECT – A POWERFUL SUITE OF ONLINE TOOLS Andy Boundy and Thomas Rothling, JewelConnect RJO/JewelConnect.com is: out-of-the-box ecommerce for stock and loose diamonds; virtual stock promotion; in-store kiosks; stock balancing; web marketing; search engine optimization; website creation; blogging platforms; social connectivity; full smartphonereadiness, total interconnectivity and much more. 12) UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIC THINKING Shane O’Neill, Fruchtman Marketing Gone are the days of the “social media plaything” mindset. The course has changed and those who want to succeed have begun to take things seriously. Contests and promotions are no way to build a Facebook page, yet it is the number one “strategy” employed by both in-house marketers and professionals alike. In fact, it can do much more harm than good. Social media are just sets of tools. It’s the people who operate those tools who determine overall success. It comes down to understanding the platforms and developing solid marketing strategies. We’ll take a look at what drives “organic” fan growth, how to develop a social media marketing plan, and identify those social media sales cycles that can deliver solid numbers to your social ROI.

SAVANNAH HAUNTED PUB WALKING TOUR
On this small group, climate-controlled luxury coach tour, we’ll visit over 68 movie locations while viewing movie clips of the same locations while we’re there. We’ll see where Forrest Gump sat on his bench, Paula Deen’s Lady & Son’s, Clary’s Cafe, Leopold’s Ice Cream, the Mercer House from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and the Six Pence Pub from Something to Talk About, just to name a few. You’ll also see the gorgeous homes of the stars, and where they love to dine, shop and party. Cost is $48 per person Departure Time from Westin is 2:15 p.m. Duration: 90 minutes
GHOSTLY NIGHTS AND PIRATE’S HOUSE TOUR & DINNER Embark on a journey into the dark side of America’s “most haunted city” on the Historic Haunts Trolley, when new doors will be opened to the “spirits and ghosts” of Savannah. Beside a paranormal ghost tour, this package includes a tour and dinner at the legendary Pirates’ House - well known for its haunting and ghostly legends. And, for the first time in many years, enter into the Rum Cellar, entryway to the tunnels. This was the path many men took for the last time in Savannah – or on this Earth.
Like the paranormal? Like to toss one back now and again? The Haunted Pubs Walking Tour was made for you. Come along for an exclusive tour of the best haunted pubs and bars in Savannah, known as the “most haunted city in America.” You’ll hear stories that span three centuries of history, with a special emphasis on the area’s ghosts, pirates and inexplicable occurrences. It’s Savannah’s favorite tour! Cost is $36 per person Departure Time from Westin is 7 p.m. Duration: 90 minutes NOTE: This tour is for adults age 21 and older. Alcohol is not provided or required, but definitely encouraged. To register, indicate on your registration form that you would like to attend, and return it along with your payment.
