Happy anniversary! Our upcoming buying show, 50 Years Together, celebrates our past and current members and vendors who have participated in RJO over the past five decades. Along the way we’ve added more choices and more services while never losing sight of our original philosophy: RJO is member-owned by retail jewelers to support retail jewelers. Through 50 years of buying shows we’ve created some wonderful memories, and 50 Years Together will provide numerous opportunities to create many more. In Indianapolis, we’ll hold our annual RJO

golf tournament (free, thanks to our vendors), gourmet food tours, gondola rides, a trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a zip line extravaganza and more. Join your best friends in Indianapolis this July for a special golden anniversary celebration and amazing vendor specials to observe the moment. Hope to see you in Indy!

productive and efficient – and whose members enjoy doing their work and working together – don’t happen by accident. Successful teams are cohesive because team members work cooperatively, maintaining individual accountability while sharing common goals. They are productive because they are able to resolve conflicts, and efficient because tasks are handled in a way that takes into account each member’s skills and strengths. Contrary to some pop theory, business success has demonstrated that the stronger the team, the greater the need for a strong leader.

In this half-day workshop, we’ll address practices that will help develop your skill as an effective team leader, specific techniques you can use to build and maintain your own cohesive, productive and efficient team, and strategies for dealing with conflict and those difficult people who seem to make every effort painful. Most importantly, we’ll discuss related issues that are important to you. Bring your questions, concerns and challenges as well as your success stories. We’ll spend the last hour of the program sharing, troubleshooting and problem solving together.

Cost is $79 for the first attendee and $49 per additional attendee. Price includes the training session and afternoon break service. 1 - 5 p.m.; Hyatt, Discovery RJO GOLF TOURNAMENT – HICKORY STICK GOLF CLUB This summer’s RJO tournament will be held at the Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood, just south of Indianapolis. Introducing Buzz Sessions! Facilitated by Kate Peterson

One of RJO’s biggest strengths is the opportunity to connect and share ideas with non-competitive peers across the nation. In these discussions, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from other store owners about their common problems and proven solutions, and get the answers and ideas that will help keep your store ahead of your competition. Come with a few questions, bring a great idea from your store, or grab a pencil and paper to write down what’s worked for other stores like yours!

8:30 - 9:20 a.m. Buzz Session: Inventory Management Kate Peterson, Performance Concepts Let’s talk about getting the most out of your inventory investment. Some pieces sell just as soon as you put them in the case; others stick around for ages. How do you decide when to try a new product and when to pass? What rules do you have when it comes to inventory aging? What stays and what goes … and how do you make the ‘go’ stuff go away? How do you navigate the tricky balance between vendor relationships and what’s financially responsible for your store? Together, we’ll arrive at the best answers.

Running the Numbers with JewelConnect Andrew Boundy, JewelConnect Introducing unique, exclusive new consumer data. You probably already know that the RJO-exclusive JewelConnect.com system powers over 500 profiles, shows over 1 million pages per year and markets 40,000 items and 20,000+ loose diamonds to the public. Now find out what happens when we track activity, customer requirements and trends by category and price. See if in-store sales match actual customer searches or if you’re missing opportunities. Even for nontechies, this session will be full of useful hard data not available anywhere else.

Intellectual Property Law and How to Protect Your Work Sara Yood, Assistant General Counsel, Jewelers Vigilance Committee Intellectual property – copyright, trademark, patent and other areas of intellectual property law – is an important part of any business, and understanding how to use the law to protect and promote your work can give you a leg up on the competition. In this session you will learn: the difference between copyright, trademark and patent law and what can qualify for legal protection and how to protect it. You also will learn about practical applications of these laws in the jewelry industry. Finally, Sara will talk about publicity rights and how they affect advertising your products to the public. Come armed with questions or send questions in advance to sara@jvclegal.org. Our expert is ready to offer guidance on protecting yourself and your IP.

8:30 - 10:20 a.m. Those Shiny Baubles in the Showcase – the Killer of Cash Flow! David Geller, Jeweler Profit, Inc. For many years, jewelers have been taught that a higher margin fixes everything. In the 50s, 60s, and part of the 1970s that might have been true, but not today. This session will open your eyes to the operations of 90 percent of all other retail stores in America. Learn to use their strategies to your advantage.

9:30 - 10:20 a.m. Buzz Session: Staff Management Kate Peterson, Performance Concepts Compliance, commitment, millennials, policies, expectations, leadership. How do you handle the challenges your team presents? Do you have that one difficult person that seems to suck the life out of you and others around them? What about keeping that superstar happy and engaged? What’s legal and what’s not? How do you go about finding and hiring the right players? What’s the business owner’s role in day-to-day management? Whatever your staff challenge, there’s a good chance someone else in RJO has encountered it and is willing to share a solution.

Using RJO’s Free Image Library Jim Grot, JewelerHub JewelerHub.net has given all RJO members free access to its high-resolution Image Library. Jim Grot will explain how to use the library, how vendors give control over who can see and use their images and how you can use the library to help organize your own images. Join this session and learn how to enhance your image library without spending a dime!

8 Essential Elements to Managing a High-Performance Sales Floor Karen Barry, The Friedman Group The Friedman Group’s experience in working with hundreds of jewelry companies since 1980 has enabled it to identify the common sales management elements always present in highly successful organizations. These vital elements are known, yet many owners choose an à la carte method of management. When all 8 essential elements are in place with a sustained focus, the sky is the limit! This session will provoke reflection on what simple steps are missing today and provide a catalyst for changes starting tomorrow.

10:30 - 11:20 a.m. Buzz Session: Marketing Kate Peterson, Performance Concepts At some point, every jeweler must become a marketing master. With traditional avenues like radio, print and TV competing with web advertising and social media for your ad money, how do you decide what’s going to give you the biggest bang for your buck? Which marketing campaigns were the most successful in 2015? Which were a bust? What about special events? Bring your best ideas to the table and hear about winners, losers and great ideas from other markets.

Profit Does Not Mean Cash Flow Phyllis Casey, Edge Retail Academy Join financial analyst Phyllis Casey from Edge Retail Academy for an in-depth look at some of the keys to financial success. She will talk about the industry averages for margins, the effect on net profitability, and how you can use those numbers to improve the management of your store’s finances. Other key topics include the cash conversion cycle, cash flow analysis sources, uses of cash and working capital requirements – excess vs. shortfall. Your store can’t afford to miss this seminar!

Mind Control: Influence Your Customers and Employees by Speaking Their Language Jimmy DeGroot, Jewelry Marketing Guy As a jewelry store trainer, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is “Jimmy, how do I get my people to.......?” The fact is, it’s really easy when you speak THEIR individual language. Once we learn to speak their language, we see a newly unified team that respects and understands each other. Then we translate this to the individual customer and learn to use words they like to hear. The result: better teams and more closed sales. I must warn you, this information will make you dangerous. People will wonder what you’re up to.

10:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. Effective Leadership and Management of a Retail Jewelry Business Bill Boyajian, Bill Boyajian Associates Every jeweler faces myriad challenges in running a successful business today. Pulled in so many directions and mired in details, you sometimes don’t know whether you’re coming or going, and you can’t see the forest through the trees. But there are basics to leading staff, managing inventory, handling suppliers, attracting customers, closing sales, adapting to change, dealing with transition, and developing your own skills as an owner that are fundamental to operating efficiently and effectively. Bill’s presentation will cover these subjects and more in a stimulating, interactive session you won’t want to miss.

11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. Buzz Session: Sales Training Kate Peterson, Performance Concepts How do you build an A+ team? What do you look for in the right ‘raw material’? How much training does a new hire get before he or she is sent out to your sales floor? Do you have a mandatory system or protocol? What about meetings? What programs/materials do you use? Come share your stunning successes and epic fails, and learn from others what has worked for them.

Get Your Fourth Quarter Plan in Place Nick Failla, Collected Concepts Don’t let the fourth quarter sneak up on you unprepared! This seminar will discuss important fourth quarter topics like special events, sales associate training and merchandising for this all-important selling period. Attend this seminar and learn more about the tactics top performers will be using this holiday season.

Selling to the Internet Shopper Sherry Smith, Edge Retail Academy Do you dread having a customer pull out internet site printouts, comparing your diamonds and pricing to internet diamond companies? This presentation offers an in-depth look at what internet sites offer and how, as retailers, we can effectively sell and satisfy clients. We will share techniques and information that will give you the confidence and passion to overcome objections, protect your margins and increase your sales.
