uMP407 is the junior mentoring program at the Workforce Development Center at The Chamber. The program brings in adults who are interested in sharing their business knowledge and life experiences with youth, in a fun and casual setting. We have found, when youth have a positive, interested adult in their life, it helps keep them in school. Mentors help youth set career goals and provide current real-world knowledge about careers and the workplace. The program is not limited to discussions about careers and work, however; mentors also bring their life experiences to the conversation and share hobbies and interests with the youth. One of our newest partners in the JuMP407 program is the Bruderhaf community (The Mount Com-

munity) located in Ulster County. On a cold night in February, members from the Bruderhaf community arrived with all of the ingredients to make uncooked apple pies (the youth took home the pies and cooked them there). “We made the pies and then they brought cooked pies and ice cream with them, so we could taste what our pies would taste like. They were delicious! said DJ Williams, a Youth One Stop and JuMP407 participant. The participants learned how to peel and core apples, roll out dough for the crust and assembled their own pies. “I had a really great time getting to know our guests and I look forward to visiting their community in the spring, said Jannara Davis, a Youth One Stop and JuMP407 participant. us Nieves came to the Work Now program in November last year. She has now been employed with Dunkin Donuts in Poughkeepsie for the past four months and recently, was told she is being promoted to a Shift Leader. “Lus is a valuable member of the team and I saw the skills in her that make for great leadership, said Holly Arano, Nieves’ supervisor. “Working with the Chamber has been a pleasure. We were definitely matched with the right employee. Nieves encourages everyone she meets to work hard. “Strive for what you want, push to success, and always be a leader, Nieves said. This program is possible thanks to the partnership between Dutchess County Government, Department of Community and Family Services and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Subzero Heroes beats fundraising goal

The Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation recently awarded Anderson Center for Autism with a $8,510 grant in support of the Center’s Vocations for LifeLong Learning project. The grant will allow the Center to purchase necessary technology for use with the LifeLong Learning program. The Center’s mission is to engage students and adults with developmental disabilities in vocational opportunities that expand their circle of support, improve work and social skills, and provide them with stronger feelings of belonging and connections to the community.

Icy temperatures and brutal winds failed to halt the Subzero Heroes fundraiser on Saturday, February 13, at Berean Park in Highland. The event, which was hosted by Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter, raised more than $122,000, surpassing its goal by $22,000. Money raised from Subzero Heroes fuels the association’s goals of support, service and research. The event was started in February 2010 when 25 people jumped into Freedom Lake in LaGrange and approximately 80 others watched. This year, more than 145 heroes registered to jump and another 75 signed up to be sidekicks and help heroes with fundraising and logistics on the day of the event. Visit subzeroheroes.org for more information.
