irst, allow me to introduce myself—I am Bill Francis, Managing Director at Fortress Financial Advisory LLC in Poughkeepsie. I am honored to serve as the 2020 Chair of the Board of Directors of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

I started Fortress Financial Advisory LLC in 2011, previously having been a Registered Representative for New York Life for 7 years. I appreciated the opportunity New York Life afforded me in getting into the Financial Services career and my time there was very productive. Eventually, I was looking to expand my product offering to help bring my clients a more well-rounded tool box from which to create financial plans for whatever stage of life they were in, and Fortress was born!

Throughout the years I have worked closely with business owners, their employees and other individuals to help them achieve their financial goals and I hope to bring this skill to the table as Chair.

Panel to discuss HR best practices for nonprofits and supporters

T

he Chamber’s Nonprofit Committee will present a complimentary panel discussion featuring Kathleen M. Hickey, MA, CFRE, President, Advancement Communications, Inc. and Interim Development Lead, Walkway Over the Hudson, Diana Pollard of Dutchess Community College Foundation, and Christine Kolosky of Our Lady of Lourdes High School as they focus on how to run a successful fundraising campaign. Attendees will gain insight for making better-informed decisions in the year and years ahead.

Security where it counts any businesses use some sort of email application to get business done and when you think about all the things that you send via email, you want to make sure you are making it as secure as possible. Google is hoping to help everyone out with their Advanced Protection Program.

The program has been designed to make it virtually impossible for anyone other than you to access Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos or other Google services.

In order to offer you such great protection, it requires a physical security key, similar to what you would use to start a vehicle with keyless ignition. It is not required that you have it plugged into your phone, laptop or desktop machine, but you do need to have it nearby. Since

most attacks by hackers happen over the internet, even if one got a hold of your username and password, they wouldn’t be able to access your account unless they had the physical key with them.

Obviously, the tradeoff is that it is going to make it a bit harder for you and other 3rd party apps.

Travel tracking apps or 3rd party apps that would need to review receipts for purchases will most likely not work. Services that you would need to use via a mobile or desktop browser will have to be accessed through Chrome or Firefox.

If you lose your key or your back up key, the process of getting into your account will take several days, so it’s very important that these are kept secure as well. Once you purchase your key for a one-

time $50

fee (plus a spare), you should register them to activate the service. Since more and more businesses are using Google G-Suite, it can be used with this as well. This is just another innovative way the technology sector is trying to combat those looking to harm your business, and give you peace of mind that your company is safe.

s the New Year begins, I like to take time to reflect back but also to look ahead. It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve as President & CEO of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, and I cannot wait for this coming year and all of its potential.

From proven networking opportunities to encouraging our members to take full advantage of all the tools the Chamber offers to market and promote themselves, and 2020 promises to be exciting.

We strive to provide our members with resources that support their growth and development. We continue to work hard to ensure our members are prepared for new federal and state laws, such as the prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace. We have a model policy for employers online, and offer training to members and their employees at no charge that satisfies New York State law. he Chamber’s Network, Present & Refer event (NPR) is a targeted networking event offering a unique opportunity for members to share information with their peers who are other, non-competing professionals and business owners. NPR returns at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, January 22 at Shadows On The Hudson, immediately before the Chamber’s Business After Hours event.

Attendees will exchange information on their organization or company—such as a brief business description, promotion

of an upcoming event, and sharing brochures and/or business cards— in a roundtable setting.

Building a tech-ready workforce

T

he need for qualified individuals to fulfill tech industry careers is growing exponentially. And, with your support, The Career Action Center of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is ready to bridge this gap.

Established in 2014, The Career Action Center is a drop-in center and classroom providing Poughkeepsie High School students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests, establish a post-high school plan, and ultimately obtain employment. The Center receives over 200 visits per month.

Through STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) focused curriculum, The Center will provide

lessons on 3-D design and printing, coding, and fundamental computer science skills. Currently, students are discovering coding and basic programming by working with Sphero robots, as pictured.

The next step for The Center is to purchase a 3-D printer.

Learning on a 3-D printer is not only instrumental in teaching design and printing, but is also

important in developing critical thinking skills that are needed as each student enters the workforce.

Your donation to the 2020 Chamber Foundation Annual Fund will help support the purchase of a 3-D printer for The Career Action Center. Projected costs of purchasing the printer, supplies, and providing staff training will total $5,000.

Career Action Center mentors are stationed in Poughkeepsie High School to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/ or obtain employment. Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. Exploring college and creating opportunities

s 2019 is coming to an end, the students in the Career Action Center are busy planning for their future. The Career Action Center is a partnership between the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Poughkeepsie City School District. Since 2014, through our Career Explorations course, students

take part in an extensive college 101 unit.

During a question and answer, participant Dulce Castellanos stated, “I know college is something that is always talked about, but I am not too sure what I have to do in order to get there.” Together as a class, we break down assumptions students might have about college. Some believe college is only for people who may have the financial resources or that the application process may

be too complicated to navigate. By breaking down the material together and partnering with local colleges like Dutchess Community College, we are able to bridge the gap by empowering them to have the confidence to ask questions, as well as provide families the support their child in the process.

“Go visit colleges, you want to get an idea of what you like and what you don’t like. Everyone is going to have different values, but you

want to start exploring them.” Steven Posada, Diversity Admissions Counselor for Dutchess Community College stated as he discussed how to choose the right college.

Through their mission, Dutchess Community College offers educational opportunities that prepare individuals to realize their full potential and contribute to a diverse and global society. Their commitment to creating opportunities, especially for the youth in their own backyard,

is demonstrated through Steven’s high energy and very honest presentation. It was amazing to watch him not only connect with the youth, but also reassure them that he and the staff at Dutchess Community College would be there to help support them in their higher education journey, all they have to do is ask.

Youth One Stop is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County.

The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

Youth One Stop is exploring the world of STEAM with Technology Gadget Information Friday’s (TGIF)!

s a way to start off winter, Youth One Stop has taken major strides to introduce their students to the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) with training modules that incorporate the use of Sphero bots, 3D printing, virtual reality, coding and computer building! The first session took place on December 6th with a brief introduction to the purpose of STEAM and the role STEAM plays in our everyday lives.

Students were shown videos and engaged in discussions that focused on how art provides a mapping of our understanding of the world through visual representation and drives the designing process of ideas for science and technology.

From the works of Leonardo De Vinici that contributed to the anatomical studies of the human body to technology developed to build three-dimensional objects from

a computer-aided design model known as 3D printing. We reviewed concepts such as the scientific method and the design-thinking process and put those concepts into practice by taking on The Straw Bridge Challenge as a team.

With only 15 minutes on the clock, students had to use 20 straws and tape to build a bridge that was one foot long and could support the weight of a Styrofoam cup with as many paper clips as possible in it.

After the exercise, students broke down their process of how they designed the bridge and identified the things that worked and didn’t work to successfully complete the challenge. At the end of the session, they were given another chance to beat their record of holding a total weight of 14 clips.

Given the excitement and enthusiasm of our participants, we then decided to up the ante by introducing them to our new robot friends, the Spheros. The Spheros are spherical robots that utilize block-coding for their program-

ming. Block-coding is just that— blocks with a list of instructions that are connected together to direct a robot on what it needs to do and where it needs to go. Similar to connecting straws to build a bridge, our students combined an array of blocks using the Sphero application on their chrome book laptops to move our robots around the office space and navigate through different obstacle courses.

In the upcoming year, Youth One Stop looks forward to further educating our students on STEAM related occupations and enhancing their computer-based and artistic skills with our new technology training module TGIF! Our TGIF sessions are tailored to explore the coding of Spheros through project-based tasks and games, as well as other areas of STEAM, like playing with light through light painting and building night kaleidoscopes.
