s a business member of our community, you are seen as an advocate for all who chose to do business locally. In business, the Chamber represents your customer base and even how legislative issues may impact you or your business directly, or indirectly. As an organization, we work hard to keep our members updated on legislative issues. The Chamber’s all-volunteer Legislative Action Committee meets regularly to discuss issues that affect us all. These could include new laws being proposed in New York State, federal guidelines for businesses and organizations, as well as development projects that are being discussed within our communities. Our membership often has the opportunity to communicate with our elected officials, and this relationship is usually facilitated by the Legislative Action Committee. Representatives from Congress, Al-
Message from the Chair:
Jennifer Dunn bany, and individuals who sit on the County Legislature and local town boards, hear from the Chamber; they hear from us as an advocate for our members and the local economy when we address issues and polices that either help, or hinder business locally and state-wide. I encourage each of you to take an active role and participate on behalf of yourself, your business, and your customers. Together our voice is stronger. Your dues help the Chamber have a large and credible voice within the community, and our elected officials know who the
Chamber is and what it stands for. Your Chamber regularly takes a stand when there is legislation that may deter businesses from starting, or staying in New York, or changes that make it more difficult to manage and operate business. When you are considering joining or renewing your dues, please remember that the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is working for you each and every day; making it easier to do business in the Hudson Valley region. Advocacy is something the Chamber and I take very seriously. It’s a benefit to all our members, as well as the rest of the business community. ity and Workforce Diversity, presented by Doug Hovey, President & CEO of Independent Living Inc. This interactive session will explore cultural transformation within small businesses using best practice modalities and tools for recruiting, hiring and managing people with disabilities as a part of a thriving workplace. How to Improve Gender Diversity in the Workplace, presented by Lorraine Lopez-Janove, Chief Diversity Officer SUNY Orange of SUNY Sullivan & SUNY Ulster. To better serve your customers and clients, it’s important to cultivate gender diversity in the workplace. This goes beyond equal representation of males and females, as it should also include
those with a non-binary gender identity. This workshop will cover several practices to put in place to achieve gender-equality. Attracting and Retaining LGBTQ Employees, presented by Jeff Rindler, Executive Director of Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center. In this interactive session we will articulate strategies to ensure your business/agency is welcoming to the LGBTQ community, tips on inclusive language to use when creating job descriptions and policies and procedures, and discuss challenges you may have in engaging the community. Overcoming Barriers to Recruiting and Retaining ‘Diverse’ Employees, presented by Wendy Amengual Wark, Founding Partner of Inclusion Strategy Solutions LLC. This session will explore the unintentional impact of bias on recruitment and retention efforts and how to overcome these barriers by implementing effective policies and protocols that create and support inclusive, collaborative work environments.

hank you to everyone who over the years has continued to renew their membership and keep their business information up to date on our Business Directory. Our membership is close to 1,400, and each of our members in good standing have the opportunity to be included in our seasonal print Business Directory. The Chamber Directory supplies an easy reminder for people to Think Local First and find your organization—in print, online, and around the neighborhood. Our Spring/Summer edition is now out, and we are continuing to distribute the Directory to all members as well as making it available at strategic places around the county including Dutchess Tourism Visitor Centers. We insure that each Directory is updated with new members and any additional information you supply us with. This guide provides a quick and clear listing of businesses and organizations sorted by industry. Members tell us how much they like the format and how easy it is to use, and keep on hand. w When you do business with fellow Chamber members—neighbors who believe lp in the same values as you do—you help ipmake our economy stronger. People flipping through the Business Directory will see the power of Think Local First. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events in the very near future. lot of businesses require staff to operate in the field, meeting with clients, producing quotes, managing projects at the job site, or even ordering products and services right on the spot. It makes sense for these members on your team to have the most flexible and least cumbersome equipment available to do their jobs well, but what is going to be the best fit? Laptop options are being replaced by tablets; how do you know if you should go with a Surface or an iPad Pro? First and foremost, each device's operating system is important to note. With an iPad Pro, you’ll be running on Apple’s iOS which may have limitations compared to the Surface Pro, which is able to run a full license of Windows 10 Pro and full versions of traditional software. Although the Apple App Store has an app catalog in the millions, an app is the only way to operate programs on an iPad. Most apps are simplified versions of original software and may not be the equivalent of licensed desktop software or older applications you need to use. Next, think about what tasks employees in the field will be tack-
ling and whether not being able to have two or more apps open at the same time is necessary. With a Surface Pro 6, you can have multiple apps open with various window sizes, and quickly jump between them. You can also move pieces of documents or images from one app to the other. The Apple iPad Pro handles the workflow differently; each app cannot always communicate between each other. If more than one app open side by side is a necessary work flow for your team, Apple’s system is not the operating system for you as it is limited to only two apps open side by side; the only way to add a third app is to dock it. Let’s also not forget that due to the requirements of your staff, they may need to connect to other devices to print reports or propos-
als. The Surface Pro is equipped with a mini display port connection in case an external monitor is needed. It also has a full size USB 3.0 ready to connect a variety of peripherals. Compare that to the iPad Pro, with just one USBC port and no additional adapters for monitors, an Ethernet cable, or SD card readers. For your team to have the most flexible and least cumbersome equipment available to do their jobs well, keep the limitations and strengths of each of these products in mind when considering your next purchase.
