The award follows in the tradition of the Business Person of the Year Award that was presented annually to local business leaders for the past 25 years. Message from the
Chamber President Frank Castella, Jr.
Chamber helps mark 2018 as Year of the Veteran
A
t our November Contact Breakfast, we introduced an initiative we are proud to support. In conjunction with County Executive Marcus Molinaro and the Dutchess County Historical Society, 2018 has been declared the Year of the Veteran in Dutchess County in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. The County and Historical Society have collaborated to organize several art exhibits around the county – including some mobile exhibitions – and plan to collect veterans’ stories from the past. To learn more about this aspect of the celebration, I invite you to watch the video created by the Dutchess County Historical Society, which we have on our website at dcrcoc.org/ veterans. There you will also find community resources for veterans as well as more informa-
tion on how the Chamber will join these efforts by offering promotional opportunities for our veteran-owned member businesses. We will be drawing special attention to these members in our print and online directories and highlighting a Veteran Member of the Month in our Bottom Line newsletter throughout the year. If you are or know of a veteran-owned business, I encourage you to visit our website for more information and to sign-up to participate. Help us acknowledge and celebrate the sacrifice, heroism, and history of our service men and women and thank them for their service!

Maintain mental wellness this holiday season By Tina Lee Health & Wellness Club
W
hile the holiday season can be an opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family, it can also quickly become very stressful. A poll by the American Psychological Association shows 8 out of 10 people anticipate increased stress and anxiety over the holidays, which may lead to depression, an unwelcome holiday guest. With these practical tips, you and your family can enjoy this holiday even more. Reach out and connect: Having strong supportive relationships helps us manage all kinds of challenges. Take time to reconnect with positive people and don’t be afraid to accept help and support to alleviate potential stress. Paying it forward by volunteering at a local charity can often make us feel better, too.
Strong Body, Strong Mind: Don’t forget to get plenty of sleep, incorporate regular physical activity, and continue to practice good eating habits. Over-indulgence can add to stress and guilt. Acknowledge and Accept: If someone close to you has recently died or you can’t be with loved ones, acknowledge it’s normal
to feel sadness and grief. Accept and be compassionate of family and friends who are upset or distressed. Chances are, they are also feeling the stress, too. Don’t be embarrassed to seek professional help. If you are experiencing per-
sistent sadness, hopelessness, or anxiety, are unable to sleep or cannot face routine chores for more than two weeks, talk to a doctor or a mental health professional. This holiday season, let’s bring down the stress and bring up the joy. After all, the best gift we can give those around us (and ourselves) is peace of mind. Need Help? Call the National Lifeline Hotline at (800) 273TALK. In Dutchess County, call or text the HELPLINE (845) 4859700 or call toll-free (877) 485-9700. Tina Lee is the Executive Director of The National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mid-Hudson Chapter – the largest grassroots mental health organization offering free educational programs, support groups, and advocacy. MEMBER NEWSLINE Company spread love with free flowers in Fishkill On a busy street in Fishkill last year, a woman with tears rolling down her cheeks told a complete stranger how much the gift he had just handed her meant. Cameras were put away. A public event had become a personal moment. Apart from tears of joy, there was also a sea of smiles and an endless supply of laughter. And it all happened again on Wednesday, October 11 as Happiness Ambassadors from online flowers and gifts company, Lovingly, handed two sets of flowers. “One is for the person who receives our gift,” says Ken Garland, co-founder and managing partner of Lovingly, “the other is a gift to be given by that person to anybody she or he chooses. Encouraging giving is what Petal It Forward is all about.” “And we love it!” smiled fellow co-founder and managing partner, Joe Vega. “This all started with the pay it forward phenomenon, where random acts of kindness were encouraged. Of course, studies on the mood-lifting effects of flowers made Petal It Forward a must.”

he local library is a magical space though sometimes patrons need encouragement to embrace it. Youth One Stop, being an incubator of future role models, wanted to help make libraries and reading cool again. Starting in September, we spent a Saturday in the children’s section of the Adriance
Memorial Library on Market Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. YOS volunteers made themselves available to young patrons, inviting them to be read to, or to read a book out loud to us! In the event that neither invitation was accepted, we took advantage of our surroundings and picked a book off the shelf to enjoy. These Saturdays were time volunteered by participants of Youth One Stop, but the reward was

“Working as a Mechanic has always been a dream of mine” said Bryant Castellanos-Ojeda. “I was not very sure about what I wanted to be before this internship, but now I have a better idea” said Fernando Martinez. Fernando and Bryant are both juniors at Poughkeepsie High School and have recently interned at Arlington Auto and Tire in Poughkeepsie through the Career Explorations class, a component of the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School. Through this intensive mentoring program, students are given the opportunity to complete a 25-hour internship based on his or her interest. Internships help students explore different career options by connecting them with people in the field and providing firsthand experience. Over the course of many years, Arlington Auto and Tire have provided Poughkeepsie students with transformative and pivotal opportunities. “We’ve had the opportunity to help a lot of students through the years and every group has been exceptional. We look forward to working with many more students,” said Moose Oakleh, Executive Vice President and General Manager at

The YOS staff and volunteers would like to extend our thanks to the staff of the Adriance Memorial Library’s Children’s section for accommodating us and providing the opportunity to become positive reading role models for the younger generation. A recent report from Scho-
lastic indicates children are more likely to enjoy reading, and read frequently, if adults read aloud to them throughout elementary school. According to Jim Trelease, author of the Read-Aloud Handbook, reading aloud helps expand attention spans and it’s a helpful method to address sensitive situations, and expand children’s capacity for empathy and awareness. Libraries are integral to a community, and YOS is honored to have been able to contribute!

he transformation of MidHudson Regional Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network continues with a full-scale, major renovation to the inpatient care floors of its six-story Cooke Building. The $8 million project fuses emerging technologies and conveniences with a reimagined experience for patients, visitors and caregivers alike, ensuring the hospital remains the area’s leader in worldclass, advanced, patient-centered care. The first of the four floors under renovation, the medical-surgical inpatient unit on the sixth floor, is expected to be fully operational
in late 2017 and all facets of this investment will greatly enhance patient comfort, safety, security and environmental protocols. Once complete, all floors will offer single-bed inpatient rooms
that create a more efficient workflow for staff and a more comfortable environment for patients and their families. On each floor, physicians, nurses and clinical
personnel will benefit from a technologically advanced centralized nursing station linked directly to a specialized work zone within each patient room to promote real-time reporting, communication and collaboration. The renovated floors will be serviced by a whisper-quiet highefficiency particulate arresting HEPA-filtered climate-control ventilation system, a new emergency backup generator and sprinkler system in case of emergency, better soundproofing technology between patient rooms, and microprocessor-controlled, regenerative elevator cars that will generate their own renewable power while descending.
