e are closing in on summer, and that of course means it is almost time for the Chamber’s 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck. People in the business community sometimes ask me why the Chamber presents the Balloon Festival. It is very simple: The Chamber as an organization is working to bolster our local and regional economy. I cannot think of a better way than having more than 25,000 people come from all parts of the state (and even other states) to be a part of this weekend-long festival. When people come to an event like this, they usually

spend the entire day. Of course, there will be balloons, but also there will be dozens of vendors, food trucks, and activities for people of all ages. And before or after the event, hopefully people will get a bite to eat, shop in some local stores, or maybe even spend the night. All this benefits Chamber members as well as the economy in general. In addition, Chamber mem-

bers are used as vendors, and many help underwrite the cost of this event by being sponsors. Sponsorship comes with significant exposure for these businesses and organizations, connecting them with the audiences they are looking to reach. So, yes, the Balloon Festival is a very large community event, but the Chamber is the perfect organization to present it. s you know, The Chamber is dedicated to not only improving our local economy and business climate, but also the community as a whole. It accomplishes this largely through the work of its affiliate, The Chamber Foundation, Inc. which hosts a variety of leadership and mentorship opportunities as well as a robust scholarship program. In the last weekend of April, The Chamber Foundation presented the second annual Hudson Valley KidVenture. Thousands joined us on the streets of downtown Poughkeepsie for a weekend of discovery, adventure, and learning. I think it’s safe to say the event was a huge success! Notable Foundation successes this past year include close to 80 local high school students completing the Youth Leadership Program, over 30 Poughkeepsie High School students completing the Leadership Connections mentorship program, over 25 pairs of adult professionals either completing or starting a year-long mentorship relationship through the Career Achievement Program, and a newly formed Executive Leadership Program that implemented a four-part, high-level, educational series for current and potential senior executives in the Hudson Valley. In June, 28 adult professionals will graduate from Leadership Dutchess, joining the ranks of more than 700 individuals who have benefitted from this

signature leadership program since its inception in 1986. The Class of 2018’s recent Cirque 29 Masquerade fundraising event was a huge success and the final fundraising total will be revealed at their graduation this month. The Foundation’s grand finale happens at the June Contact Breakfast, where we will award nearly $40,000 to local students to further their education goals. See Page 1 for complete event information. I hope you will join me as we recognize these students for their hard work and determination. In short, The Chamber Foundation is deeply rooted in its mission to further enhance the future of our community through training, education, mentorship, and commitment to community service. mart home tech is all the rage. And it seems we’ll do anything to achieve the goal of having a home that can do everything from a phone app or voice command. However, there are some things you should know as you decide to dip your toe in the smart products pool but for this article let’s start with lighting. Most big box stores carry smart switches, which is common smart product to control your lighting. But there are also have smart bulbs and plugs, which when combined to your smart switches, could offer a better custom fit for your needs. Smart bulbs not only let you set a schedule or give you the ability to control them remotely – but they also allow you to change colors on a whim. Smart plugs on the other hand allow you to turn an existing

lamp into a device that can be controlled remotely or scheduled in a simpler way if they don’t accept the installation of a smart bulb. You also have the flexibility to move a smart plug or bulb to wherever you may need it. Smart switches are a bit more of a permanent installation but still give you the flexibility to use the manual switches or remote controls. You can use the existing light fixtures that can’t accept smart bulbs as well. Mixing and matching these products in various areas of your home allows you to customize the look and feel throughout your space while still getting better efficiency. Omega announces scholarship opportunities

Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, a nonprofit organization dedicated to lifelong learning, announced today that more than $300,000 will be awarded in full and partial scholarships to eligible applicants for more than 70 workshops taking place on their Hudson Valley campus in 2018. “Omega is committed to modeling a holistic learning environment. City of Poughkeepsie receives NYCOM Local Government Award

The New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM) selected the City of Poughkeepsie as a first place winner of NYCOM’s Local Government Achievement Awards. The awards program, in its 31st year, recognized Poughkeepsie for its Transit Consolidation for Sustainability project. In commenting on the award, NYCOM President James Miccio, Mayor of the Village of Fishkill, stated: “The City of Poughkeepsie is to be commended for its desire to improve City services as well as the City’s finances through this extraordinary example of intergovernmental collaboration. The Transit Consolidation for Sustainability project will benefit Poughkeepsie for years to come and is just one example of how local officials continue to work diligently to enhance their communities and the quality of life for their residents. I would like to congratulate Mayor Rolison on this tremendous accomplishment.” The City of Poughkeepsie worked with Dutchess County and consolidated their two transit systems. Since the City’s system was experiencing declining ridership and was a drain on the City’s finances, this consolidation will not only save the City money, but has resulted in a significantly improved County bus service which will benefit the many riders who use it. The award was presented on May 6 at NYCOM’s Annual Meeting in Saratoga Springs. NYCOM represents 575 cities and villages in New York State and has been in existence since 1910.

KidVenture 2018, a resounding success

n behalf of The Chamber Foundation, its board of directors, and staff, I am pleased to report that Hudson Valley KidVenture 2018 was a smashing success! This year’s event saw tremendous growth, with better-thanexpected attendance on both Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29. We had a sold-out Civic Center, with vendors, performances, food trucks, and event enhancements such as: two days of Touch-a-Truck, a roaming railroad, life-like tyrannosaurus rex, the Market Street performance stage, and much, much more. The community’s support of KidVenture allowed children of all ages to explore and discover the Hudson Valley, and furthered The Chamber Foundation’s mission and promise of providing educational opportunities and resources to our community. JUNE 2018WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER Career Action Center mentors are stationed in Poughkeepsie High School to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/or obtain employment. Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. The Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

always knew what I wanted to do in my future, but there wasn’t any form of guidance given to me in my life. In 2017, I started my own cleaning business. From doing that I have obtained a number of customer service skills and discovered my business niche. Starting my own business and seeing the results from being focused and passionate about what you do, I could see great fulfillment where an otherwise ordinary job could lack. Especially if you started it from the ground up like I did. I sold hundreds of

shirts where I learned a lot of marketing techniques, which usually helps to draw more customers to a business. I was only 17 and making more money than my regular paying job. It started to get so busy and time consuming that it started to have a effect on my school life. Eventually, I put my business on hold and focused on the opportunities I could find in school that’d enhance my business skills. Through my guidance counselor at Poughkeepsie High School, I learned a lot about the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Career Action Center, and the Leadership Connections Program. This Program pairs students with leaders from

our community that come from a variety of industries, career fields, and businesses. It also prepares young adults to seek careers of their interest and what’s required

Youth One Stop is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

tephanie came to Youth One Stop last fall. She was already working as a C.N.A. but felt she could do more. After enrolling in the program she began working with a case manager on entering Emergency Medical Technician training. If she completed the course, Stephanie would be Youth One Stop’s first certificate in that field. She began the process by completing a job shadow day in which she observed the dayto-day operations of EMT personnel. This is a required part of the applicant for Youth One Stop in

order to confirm that such training is what the individual really wants. Stephanie wasn’t phased by what she observed. She completed the remainder of the application; wrote an essay detailing her passion for helping others and being of service. In her application interview she was reminded that emergency workers do not get snow days; people’s lives depend on them. She nodded and said, “I can do this.” This past winter, Stephanie began the EMT training program with Dutchess Community College, while still working as a C.N.A. in Hyde Park. She enjoyed the class though it was

challenging and progressed quickly in picking up new skills. When it came time for the final certification test, she felt a little nervous, but knew she had studied and prepared as best she could. Unfortunately, in her first attempt she failed. But Stephanie didn’t waste any time feeling sorry for herself. She reapplied to take the exam, studied hard and took it again. This time she passed with a 95. Youth One Stop is exceptionally proud of Stephanie. With determination, confidence, and hard work she’s blazed a new trail! We admire that she stepped out of her comfort zone, pushed herself to new heights and succeeded. We look forward to helping other youth with passion and grit to achieving their professional and educational goals.

During this year-long program, I met influential people such as Katrina Gobins, who has always encouraged me and showed me what I need to do to get my foot through the door in order to succeed. It’s also where I met my mentor, now friend, and business partner Larkland Campbell. He has had a huge impact on my life. I took the initiative to call him to become my lifelong mentor. With his help and guidance, I started to pursue my goals, both short and long term. Some of my short-term goals were to start

self-educating myself on business techniques, self-improvement, decision making, and how to build and maintain good credit. About 8 months into my mentorship, I’ve been able to reach goals I never believed I could achieve in such a short time. I’m now buying property as part of major business projects, as well as getting a job at Mid-Hudson Credit Union. That’s where I plan on continuing my career in the banking industry as well as acquiring a financial education. I plan on one day to inspire youth to believe in themselves, and to teach them that if they’re determined and passionate about something they could achieve their desires. Malik has proven to be one of the very few. He has shown great initiative, a definite self starter. The Workforce Connections Program comprises both education/training services and staffing resources. These organizations are often multifaceted and offer several programs that help with both existing and future employees. Workforce Connections Program, through group Resume Writing Workshops and individually with Case Managers, the participants of WFC will help ensure that your resumes, cover letters, and references are in excellent shape. The summer months can also pose another challenge for many working and job-seeking parents: childcare. Working to secure and afford reliable and safe childcare during the summer months always poses an additional employment barrier. Working to ensure that all of the potential employment barriers are resolved is key to ensuring the success of our Workforce Connections Participants.
