As with anything, too much of a good thing can be bad for you, and any exercise can risk injury if done incorrectly. While most running injuries come from overuse, increasing mileage too quickly, or muscle weakness placing excess stress on joints, it is possible to curb those risks with a little professional help. n 1970, the first New York City marathon had just 127 competitors. Nearly 50 years later, the 2016 race saw more than 51,000 runners cross the finish line! Running is an activity shared by tens of millions of Americans every year. It can be a great way to get and stay healthy, but unfortunately, running has gotten a bad reputation. Everyone has heard how “running is bad for your knees,� however, there are many healthy benefits when done correctly. So let’s run through some of them, pun intended. A 2014 study tracked more than 55,000 runners for 15 years and showed running as little as five to ten minutes per day, even at slow speeds, greatly reduced risks of c a rd i ov a s c u l a r disease and death from all health-related causes. Results from another study, which followed 156,000 runners since the early 1990s, were presented at a 2016 symposium for the American College of Sports Medicine. This large-scale study proved running up to 40 miles per week had significantly reduced rates (26 percent) of coronary artery disease.

Sharpe to host syrup festival The Fresh Air Fund’s Sharpe Reservation will host its 14th Annual Sugar Maple Celebration on Saturday, March 18 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at its Fishkill location at Camp Hidden Valley, 436 Van Wyck Lake Road. Pediatric office offers glimpse at healthcare careers to area youth By Diane DeDominicis Director of Employment Services

T

he NYS Department of Labor Regional Analysis has projected healthcare jobs will remain vitally important to our region’s economy. As part of an ongoing Work Experience Initiative, youth from the Dutchess County Youth One Stop and Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School recently participated

in a job shadow day at the Children’s Medical Group. As part of the shadow day, Clinical Manager Susan Haegler, along with her staff, offered an insider’s look at the work environment and careers available in a pediatric healthcare facility. Healthcare careers such as physician, registered nurse, and patient care technician were discussed along with positions in the various departments

necessary for smooth day-to-day operations including human resources, finance, medical lab, mailroom, and patient registration. The presentation emphasized excellent customer service as one of the most important skills necessary in this service industry. Speakers also stressed working hard and taking advantage of opportunities for continuing education. “We learned that even if you start off in a low position, you can move up the ladder of success as long as you are willing to learn,� said Georgette Riley, an attendee at the shadow day.

“Anything automotive!� Francisco Lopez-Reyes replied without hesitation when asked what type of internship he would enjoy. Lopez-Reyes is a senior at Po u g h k e e p s i e High School and attends the Career Explorations class, which is part of the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School. As part of the program, each student is placed in a

25-hour internship in his or her area of interest. Arlington Auto & Tire in Poughkeepsie welcomed LopezReyes immediately. Moose Oakleh, Executive Vice President and General Manager, has been hosting interns for 16 years and is both happy and excited to include students “who have a passion for this line of work.� OakIeh says internships are a way for him to combine the shar-

ing of his talents with giving back to the community. “Not only does Francisco have passion, but a natural ability,� Oakleh said. “Francisco was always looking forward to the next step. He is very eager to learn and ambitious.� Lopez-Reyes appreciated his time at the shop as much as they appreciated having him. “Everybody [was] very friendly and hard working,� he said. Not only was Lopez-Reyes in his element learning more about cars, he was also gaining valuable hands-on experience and confirming this industry is where he wants a career. “This opportunity increased my self confidence,� Lopez-Reyes said. hayla McIntosh is no stranger to hard work. As a single mother, she goes from morning ‘til night to ensure she provides for her children. At her job at Dunkin Donuts in the City of Poughkeepsie, McIntosh works tirelessly to learn as much as possible about the food service industry in general and the bakery in particular. “I love this job and am trying to learn how

to do everything, so I can continue my career with this company,� McIntosh said. McIntosh credits the strong support of her manager, Sean, with her continued success. “As our location grows, it’s exciting to watch Shayla grow with it,� Sean said. Following the awards dinner, the 11 honorees agreed to ‘share’ the award over the course of the year. Each of the 11 will have a turn to display the golden statue in her office for one month. So far, Gloria Cukar of MidHudson Regional Hospital held it in December before delivering it to Dr. Pamela Edington of Dutchess Community College for January and then to Renee Fillett of Astor Services for Children & Families for February. Cukar will deliver the award to Lauren Gillett of Chazen Companies for March.

I

f you’re one of the 3 million people in the world who pose questions to Siri, an Amazon Echo, or a similar personal assistant device, you are part of a growing trend in how users interact with technology. Soon, standard user interfaces will fall away in favor of using artificial intelligence, or AI. AI will create opportunities to make any interface both simple and smart, allowing for faster adoption and providing better customer satisfaction. An example of AI at the most basic level is when an app suggests new music based on users’ previous choices. A much more advanced application would be LettucBot, a program that uses complex algorithms to remove weeds from farmers’ crops while pinpointing seedlings planted too close together and removing the weaker.

At its most sophisticated, AI can orchestrate tasks behind the scenes. The technology acts based on past experience, learns from interactions, and can create or complete new tasks. Significant advances in the ability to process language and machine learning make the technology more intuitive, as well. In 2016, voice searches were more than 10 percent of global searches. As investment dollars grow, AI is poised to become the face of a company’s brand. However, as with customer interactions with human employees, AI will have to be monitored closely to ensure each interaction positively shapes customer opinion and interest in the company and brand.
