This represents a nearly 35 percent increase over past amounts. ithout fail, one of the best days of my year is watching all the students get presented their scholarships at our May Contact Breakfast. I believe education is the beginning of the solution to any problem, and I’m so glad that The Chamber Foundation, Inc. is able to help so many students further theirs. The Chamber is a business organization, no doubt about that, but I’m extra proud that our annual scholarship offerings are so diverse. There’s the Cosimo DiBrizzi Scholarship for those pursuing the culinary arts; the Eileen Hickey Nursing Scholarship for students interested in healthcare; the Juan LaFuente Scholarship is there to help develop future engineers; and the Norman and Rita Nussbickel Scholarship rewards academic, athletic and communityminded students. And of course I’m again so proud to be able to support my very own scholarship, the Charles S. North Scholarship For Music, to aid a Dutchess County high school student going on to college to study the art. I just highlighted a handful of our scholarship

offerings, there are many more, and I am so pleased to be a part of awarding each and every one of them. While the official tallies aren’t yet in, we know that this year is our best ever in terms of both the number of scholarships awarded, and the total amount of aid given, and we expect that over $45,000 in scholarship money will be given out. That is an amazing figure only possible because of the generosity of the Hudson Valley business community who always come out to support The Chamber Foundation and its events. Each year, a packed dining room for the Cosimo DiBrizzi Dinner or a raucous group of basketball fans at Wing Madness realize that you can have a lot of fun doing a lot of good , and I hope to see everyone coming out and supporting our Foundation and its mission to help students further their education once again in 2012! Women’s Leadership Alliance presents Tabletop Expo

very year the Women’s Leadership Alliance Committee (WLA) of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce hosts the Wares and Wisdom Conference Expo focused on increasing and developing women’s presence in the business world. Old electronics can be recycled

Dutchess he ReCounty gional Chamber of Commerce’s Green Life Committee is again calling on the Hudson Valley to easily and properly recycle all old or unwanted computers and personal electronics during Electronic Recycling Days on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 from 12-4 p.m. at the Dutchess Mall in Fishkill. Volunteers will be available to assist with the unloading of cars. The committee urges anyone to drop off old electronics including: monitors, printers, keyboards, VCRs, batteries, cell phones, terminals, cables, fax machines, radios, modems, CRTs, telephones, televisions, CPUs, copiers, typewriters, stereo equipment and more for proper recycling. While there is no charge to turn in items, the Green Life Committee will be accepting donations to benefit The Chamber Foundation, Inc. The suggested donation is $5 per car-

load for individuals or $20 per business. Note that the collection on Friday, June 1 is solely for businesses and pre-registration is required. On Saturday, June 2, all citizens are invited to make use of this complimentary electronics recycling service and can do so without registration. At the last electronic recycling event, the Green Life Committee collected over 52,000 pounds of items while raising more than $2,000 for The Chamber Foundation, Inc. Recycling old electronics is a boost to not only the environment, but also the economy. Proper electronic recycling helps to reduce emissions, limits the strain on our landfills and ensures that harmful chemicals used in production do no harm to the ecosystem. Items can also occasionally be salvaged and refurbished before being either sold or donated to local citi-

zens and not-for-profit organizations in need. The Dagar Group and Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corp. proudly join in bringing Electronic Recycling Days to the community. You can separate your network into two categories and again, divide users among these categories. One set of users will only need internet access; these are people with devices that just need an internet connection to allow them to connect to their home office to access their files and presentations. The other group needs limited network access; maybe they’re from a partner organization that you share some data with and to better evaluate the status of a project they’ll need access to certain files or directories. More devices will enter the workplace as technology continues to evolve, but being proactive with your policies should help you protect your infrastructure that keeps your business running. However, this presents a tricky situation for the IT departments of the world because they need to allow employees this flexibility and functionality, but at the same time they need to make sure that the corporate network and data are secure against outside threats. So how do businesses accomplish both in our “Bring Your Own Device” workplace? The first step is knowing the type of approach you want to take with your business and its policies regarding mobile devices and security. The walk is the only local walkathon that raises funds to help Hudson Valley residents living with HIV/AIDS. The first AIDS Walk was held in 1992 in White Plains but moved to Poughkeepsie in 2004. This year’s AIDS Walk takes place on Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Walkway Over the Hudson. o you want to have a more powerful, positive and lasting impact within your employment organization and/or your community? Are you ready to uncover, deepen and build upon your natural strengths as a leader, but need support in exploring the challenges of effective leadership? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we encourage you to submit an application for The Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Dutchess program. Leadership Dutchess is the signature program of The Chamber Foundation, Inc., and for over 20 years has been dedicated to educating and motivating aspiring citizens to serve in leadership roles within our community. This program was designed to foster the development of a group of professionals who grow and learn together over a nine-month period through a variety of experiences that include lively discussions, interactive exercises, experiential roles, community service and ongoing feedback. Leadership Dutchess classes and events are held once per month September-June and all course work contributes to the knowledge and understanding of leadership.

By the end of the program you will: • Recognize your personal leadership strengths and know how to use them most effectively. • Perceive and build on the strengths inherent in others to create powerful alliances to achieve mutual goals. • Learn how to use your personal influence to inspire and develop collaborative relationships. • Learn to respond effectively to dynamically changing conditions both in the workplace and in your community. • Become aware of your impact on others, learn to create your desired impact and begin to take responsibility for that impact in your professional life and in your community. • Be ready to assume new responsibilities and leadership roles in your organization and in your community.

You will also … • Develop personal and professional growth due to exposure to community issues and leaders. • Participate in an informative, eye-opening, thought-provoking program. • Visit “restricted” or difficultto-access areas in our county. • Open a window for volunteer opportunities. • Become a member of an exclusive community of over 580 Leadership Dutchess graduates. In May, remember those who served our country

ith Memorial Day approaching, many people find May to be the perfect time to reflect and show gratitude for those among us who sustained an injury serving in our armed forces. Throughout this month in the Hudson Valley, watch for members of our own chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), as they will be out in force offering forget-me-nots and other goodies in honor of our brave servicemen and women. Best described as the fraternity of disabled veterans throughout the country, the Dutchess County chapter of the DAV is located in Castle Point, but active throughout the area. The DAV is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping disabled veterans to adjust and adapt back into a routinely

American lifestyle after being injured during a deployment. The organization sustains itself solely on dues and contributions from its members and supporters. They do not receive any federal aid. The DAV can provide veterans with legal representation, rehabilitation care, or other benefits for products and services unique to the needs of a wounded soldier. DAV officers aim to provide members the convenient means to return to a normal civilian life. For more information about the Disabled American Veterans national organization, visit www. dav.gov.
