Department of Sanskrit

Inauguration of the Activities of Sanskrit Association Activities of the Sanskrit Association for the academic year 2016-17 were inaugurated on 19thJuly 2016. The function began with the Vedic Prayer by Dr. S. Muthu. The Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Dr. Kalley Prasanth introduced the speakers to the audience. Swami Shukadevananda blessed the gathering through his Benedictory Address. Dr. S. Thirunavukkarasu, Principal, presided over the function. The inaugural address was given by Dr. J. R. S. Vasan Ramanan (Retired Professor of Sanskrit, RKM Vivekananda College). This was followed by a Special Address by Dr. R. Narayanan (Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Indian School, Al Ghubra, Muscat, Oman), an old student of the Department, on “Management Principles in Sanskrit Literature”. The formal vote of thanks was given Dr. R. Ramachandran. Sanskrit Day Celebration The Department celebrated the Sanskrit Day on 24th August 2016 by organizing a lecture of Sri D. K. Hari (Founder, Life Member and Managing Trustee, Bharath Gyan) on “Ancient Indian Astronomy”. Dr. S Thirunavukarasu, Principal, presided over the function and honoured the speaker with a shawl and memento. Endowment Competitions and Lectures of the Department •

Amarabharati and Prof. V. Rajagopalan Endowment Inter-Collegiate Competitions: The Department of Sanskrit conducted the annual Inter-Collegiate Saundaryalahari Recitation Competition under Amarabharati Endowment and Prof. V. Rajagopalan Endowment Inter-Collegiate Oratorical Competitions on 15th February 2017. A good number of students from various colleges participated in these competitions and won prizes.

Prof. S. Viswanathan Endowment: Students of the Department organised various activities like Quiz competition under Prof. S Viswanathan Endowment on 16th February 2017. Numerous students from different departments of the College participated in the activities. T S Prasanna Venkatesh of 2nd BA Sanskrit gave a presentation on “Ancient India as Sketched by Kalidasa” with special reference to Kalidasa’s Meghaduta in which he emphasized on the necessity of Sanskrit Literature as internal evidence for reconstructing the history of Ancient India. The current Research Scholars of the Department gave brief details of their research and its progress. Sri S. Sundaram, a M.Phil. candidate gave paper presentation on his research topic. It was followed by a PhD candidate, S. S. Kaarthik’s talk on his research. Then, Sri S. Venkatesh, a MPhil candidate and Sri P. K. Mohan, a M.Phil. candidate, spoke about their research.

Dr. S. Arunasundaram distributed the prizes won by the participants of the different Endowment competitions conducted by the Department.

Arunasundaram (Assistant Professor, Department of Vyakarana, Madras Sanskrit College) delivered the endowment lecture on “The Contribution of Prof. P. S. Subrahmanya Sastri to Mahabhasya”. The formal vote of thanks was given Dr. R. Ramachandran.

HSwami Vivekananda Jayanti and Sister Nivedita Jayanti Celebrations

An inter-collegiate oratorical competition in Sanskrit was conducted in connection with Swami Vivekananda Jayanti and Sister Nivedita’s 150th Jayanti Celebrations on 7th February 2017. A good number of students from various colleges participated in the competitions and won prizes. Sanskrit Association Activities Valedictory The Valedictory session of the activities of the Sanskrit Association was conducted on 4th March 2017. Swami Shukadevananda blessed the gathering through his message. Dr. S. Thirunavukkarasu, Principal, presided over the function. The Valedictory Address was given by Dr. O. R. Devanathan (Head, Department of Sanskrit, Presidency College, Chennai). He highlighted the need of the propagation of the principles hidden in the language to the modern world to serve the humanity in a better way and also to preserve our intangible culture embedded in Sanskrit Language. He also highlighted the usage of Alankaras which give an embellishment to Sanskrit Literature by quoting few instances from Sanskrit Literary works. Sri N. R. Kumar (Chartered Accountant and Management Consultant) in his special address stressed the importance of Sanskrit Language through the propagation of which we can serve and help the humanity in a better way by bringing out the hidden treasures by constant and dedicated research of the Literary Sources in Sanskrit. Research Activities This year 5 students were registered for M.Phil, and 4 for Ph.D in our Department. Research Scholars’ Activities Research scholar, Barath Ram K, delivered a special lecture on “Dhananjaya’s Dasarupakam” at Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai – 41, on 15th March 2016. The Research Scholars of the Department gave brief details of their research and its progress during the Prof. S. Viswanathan Endowment activities. Sri S. Sundaram, a M.Phil. candidate gave paper presentation on his research topic. It was followed by a Ph D candidate, S. S. Kaarthik’s talk on his research. Then, Sri S. Towards this, Samskrita Bharati conducted a 5 day workshop from 6th to 11th June 2016 in order to exchange views on the inherent strengths of our nation and the avenues that are available for youth to further champion the cause. The students of the Department participated in Workshop and was enlightened in various ideas such as — Channelizing their Strengths towards building a great society, Role and Importance of Samskritam in Nation Building, etc. Besides this the participants had chance to enjoy “Sambhashana Samskritam” – Samskrita Bharati’s fastest way of learning Spoken Sanskrit on every day of the program.

The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram organised a National Seminar on “Innovative Ideas in Imparting Yoga” on the 29th of June 2016 under the auspices of Department of AYUSH, Government of India as part of International Day of Yoga celebrations. T S Prasanna Venkatesh and Sudarshan K of 2nd BA Sanskrit, and V Kamaraj of 3rd BA Sanskrit took part in the workshop. The students were very much benefited by listening to various speakers and also by the Yoga Session conducted by the KYM.

The students of the Department participated in Inter-collegiate Sanskrit Competitions organised by the Department of Sanskrit, Stella Maris College, Chennai - 86, on the 3rd of September 2016 and they were given certificates.

The Egmore Samskrt School conducted their 60 th Gita Recitation Competition on 22nd January 2017 for College level at Sir M. Ct. Muthiah Chettiar Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Chennai - 84. Students of the Department took part in the competitions and were given certificates.

The students of the Department participated in Inter-collegiate sanskrit quiz competition on “Pancha Maha Kavyas” conducted by Loyola College, Chennai, during the Sanskrit Bhashotsava - 2017, on the 25th February 2017 and they were given certificates.

The Inauguration of the QUIT INDIA DAY was organized by the Dept of Historical Studies on 9th August 2016. Prof W.M. Jai prasad welcomed the gathering. Dr S. Thirunavukkarasu, Principal presided and narrated the events of the freedom struggle. Prof J. Pugazenthy, HOD has delivered a special address on “QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT”. He exhorted the sacrifices of the National Leaders like Mahathma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat ray, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. He also pointed out the contributions of Tiruppur Kumaran, Vanchinathan, V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and the patriotic poet Bharathiar in the National Movement in Tamilnadu. Dr. T. Jegadeesan, HOD, Dept of Mathematics and Dr. A. Damodaran, Asst. Prof. of Tamil has also spoken on the occasion. Dr. J.P. Vivekanandan gave vote of thanks. Around 12 students participated. By 16th August 2016, an Oratorical competition was conducted in the Department. Nearly 20 students participated. An Essay competition was also held in the Department. Department of Economics The Achievements of Staff and Students - 2016-2017 The Department of Economics is the Research Department conducting research leading to Ph.D. degree since 1972 and M.Phil from 1977-78. At present, the Department has 12 doctoral candidates and two M.Phil candidates. Mr. Hariharansudhan, Prof.Elango J. Parimalam and Ms.Thyalnaiyaki were awarded Ph.D degrees. Prof.A.Kasirajan, Mrs. Satyabama and Mr.Thirunavukkarasu are submitted their thesis and waiting for Viva-Voce. The staff members of the Department have participated and presented 32 research papers in the National and International Conferences for the year 2016 - 2017. In addition, totally 21 research articles were published bearing ISBN and ISSN. The students from BA and MA classes have brought laurels to the college in general and the department in particular by participating in academic events, sports, NSS and other cultural activities. They have won in many intercollegiate and interdepartmental tournaments apart from individual events.

During the trip the students are visited various Museum at Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun. The students were also exposed to IARI research Institutes and Botanical Gardens in Agra & New Delhi from 17.02.2017 to 26.02.2017. Mr. J. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The department actively involved in research activities and published 45 research articles in reputed national/international journals/Conference proceedings full papers/book chapters. Viveka Nature Club was inaugurated on 26-07-2016 by Dr.R.Ramanibai, Professor and Head, Dept. of Zoology, University of Madras, Chennai and delivered a lecture on “Biodiversity Conservation”. Dr.K.P.Sanjayan, Associate Professor and Head, Dept. of Adv. Zoology & Biotechnology, Gurunanak College, Chennai delivered a lecture on “Biological Molecules and Success of Life “ on 13-02-2017. III B.Sc., students went field trip to Western Ghats & West Coast regions for ecological studies from 30-01-2017 to 03-02-2017. I B.Sc., Students went field trip to Rameshwaram Sea shore to study the live forms and their habitats, they also visited CMFRI museum at Mandapam, Nihil ornamental fish farm and Aqua gardens at Kadachanendal, Madurai from 20.02.2017 to 24.02.2017, trained and acquired knowledge about breeding, rearing of various aquarium fishes. II B.Sc., students going to visit Sri Ramachandra Medical University, Chennai on 20-03-2017. Our students participated in the Inter-collegiate competitions held in various city colleges and won the gold medals and certificates. Dr.A. AND 150th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF SISTER NIVEDITA 155TH Annual Jayanti celebration of Swami Vivekananda and concluding programme of 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Sister Nivedita was held on 1st February, 2017. The Inaugural address delivered by REVERED SRIMAT SWAMI GAUTAMANANDAJI MAHARAJ, Senior Trustee of the Rama Krishna Math & Member of the Governing Body of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math and Adhyaksha, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. Revered Swami Shukadevanandaji Maharaj the secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College has introduced the chief guest and gave the welcome and Benediction address. Finally the Principal Dr.S.Thirunavukkarasu has proposed the vote of thanks. The Chief Guest also has inaugurated the Blood Donation camp which was organized by NSS Units of the college and conducted for two days on 1st and 2nd of February, 2017. The Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau has arranged the various Hospitals in Chennai to collect the blood. On this occasion a record total of 1,508 Units of blood have been donated by our students. The following Inter-Collegiate competitions were conducted as part of the Jayanthi Celebrations and concluding programme of 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Sister Nivedita . The Tamil poetry competition (Kaviyarangam) on “SAMUGA VIDIVELLI VIVEKANANDAR “was conducted on 3.2.2017 at 9.00 a.m. 24 participants both from other colleges and our college have participated. Miss .M.Kamatchi of Presidency College and Mr.A.S.Kishore of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University secured the first and second price respectively. In the other poetry competition (Kaviyarangam) on “BHARATHIARIN PARVAYIL NIVEDITA” has conduted on the same day at 11.30 a.m. 20 participants both from other colleges and our college have took part.
