Centre for Learning and Teaching Newsletter Issue 8 - January 2011 Winter Learning and Teaching Conference 2011 For the first time the CfLT is holding a Winter Conference along with the usual Spring, Summer and Autumn regulars. The Winter Conference will be on the 2nd February and is a half day event (including a hot buffet lunch). It will focus on the ToTAL project. The ToTAL project represents an ambitious approach to learning and teaching strategic development that is committed to supporting students in developing more independent and personalised approaches to study and research and in becoming more active partners in their learning. The project is as much about supporting the enhancement of existing models of learning and teaching as about exploring new and innovative teaching and learning approaches. The workshops include; ‘Using Blackboard to support Active Learning’, ‘Multimedia Resources and the independent learner’ and ‘e-Portfolios and the student centred approaches to online learning’. The workshops run in rotation so all delegates will have a chance to attend all three. Full details of the conference (and content of the workshops) can be found in the CfLT area of Blackboard. If you are interested in attending please contact Rachael Burnett to book your place before 25th January. rachael.burnett@bishopg.ac.uk.
NEW RESOURCE ROOM! Along with the Centre for Learning and Teaching office moves (see page 2) the CfLT Resource Room has also upped stick, left it’s home in the Skinner Building and trotted along with us to the Skinner Annexe where it’s settling nicely into Room 5A! The new Resource Room has most of the facilities that were previously available (a SmartBoard is on it’s way but not yet installed) and is bookable in the same way (via Leslie Dicker/Celcat). If you need any assistance using the equipment in the Resource Room either make an appointment with a member of the CfLT staff or pop across to 10A where we will endeavour to answer any of your queries.
NEWSFLASH! David Barber’s job title has been changed to ‘Head of e-Learning’ in order to better reflect parallel roles within the Academic Engagement Hub structure. David will be part of the Academic Engagement Hub Management team, alongside Emma Sansby, John Sharp, Sarah Seeley, Phil Davis and Claire Taylor.

New Licence enables us to put TV Programmes on Blackboard Would you like your students to watch something you’ve recorded from TV but have no time to sit and watch it with them during lectures? Our new ERA Plus Licence means we can now legally post programmes recorded from TV and Radio onto Blackboard so your students can watch them off campus in their own time. It covers scheduled free to air broadcasts recorded from: • • • • •
BBC television and radio ITV Network services (including ITV2 and ITV3) Channel Four and E4 Five television S4C.
It also applies to recordings of any other licensed broadcast services including both radio and television services. On-demand programming (including podcasts) can’t generally be recorded and thus isn’t relevant in this context, but there’s some useful guidance on on-demand services on the UWE website at http://www.uwe.ac.uk/library/info/academic/av_ondemand.htm#copyright. The Copyright FAQs document has recently been revised, including updated information about newspapers, podcasts, and on-demand TV services. You can find a copy in the secure area of the website under ‘Reprographics’ or in the Library area of Blackboard under ‘For Staff’. The Code of Practice on Copyright has also been updated (and is currently awaiting approval), as has the student version of the FAQs document. If you have no facility to record programmes at home our IT department can do this for you as long as the programme is available through Freeview. Log your request on the IT Helpdesk and please give them plenty of notice. They will record your programme and transfer it to DVD in a playable DVD file format. Sadly this upgrade was not cheap and will run out on the 31st of July 2011 when we will have to decide if the level of take-up makes renewal worthwhile. We will need to be careful how much we put on there and I also need to control how long things stay up, as well as monitoring usage, so please channel all requests through me. Thanks. caroline.pearce@bishopg.ac.uk

DISCOVER A NEW TOOL FOR LEARNING Trying to decide which tools to use to support your teaching this year? A good place to start would be the list below. It is an extract from a longer list of 100 entries, as voted for by over 500 learning professionals worldwide and compiled by Jane Hart (Business Consultant from the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies – http://c4lpt.co.uk/recommended/top100-2010.html). The vast majority of tools are online based services that are available for free. The list reveals potentially new and useful tools that you may not have come across. It also highlights the reach and impact of social networks within education, as many of the tools facilitate ways in which resources can be shared. The video sharing site, YouTube (#2), has rapidly grown in popularity whilst more traditional communication forms such as PowerPoint (#21) has steadily declined. Another tool that you may consider recommending to students is diigo (#15), a research tool that lets you highlight/annotate web-pages and share your work with others. To find out more about any of these tools access the electronic version of this newsletter and click on the links
