SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS STORY When weighing up her tertiary study options last year, our former student, Eve Battersby was looking to “experience something completely different”. Eve was awarded a University of Otago Leaders of Tomorrow Entrance Scholarship valued at $6,000 which further cemented her decision to study in the south. She has chosen to study toward a double degree – a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History. Now several months into her first year of study, Eve says she appreciates the opportunities she had at Rotorua Lakes High School and how those experiences helped prepare her for life as a university student. “My high school offered a wide range of subjects, so I had a good idea of what I wanted to pursue.” Her advice to those making their own tertiary study choices: “Don’t be too set on any paper or course – there are so many interesting things to explore.” We wish Eve all the very best. ______________________________________________________________________________

FROM THE HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTRE There have been 2 recent cases of confirmed Rheumatic Fever within the last week at Lakes DHB. One adult and 1 child – who will now require long term prophylactic regular monthly bicillin injections. Rheumatic fever can be a debilitating disease, BUT it can be prevented. It is caused by streptococcus or strep bacteria in the throat. A simple throat swab can diagnose a person with strep, once diagnosed, a 10 day course of antibiotics can kill the bacteria. Left untreated however, the bacteria can spread into the heart muscle causing damage or Rheumatic Fever. Strep throat is HIGHLY contagious!! It is spread through close contact with an infected person, often by inhaling airborne droplets from an infected person’s cough and sneezes. It can also be spread through shared drinks and food. Please encourage your child to come and see me if they have a sore throat. Over the last 2 terms I have diagnosed Strep A throat infections and subsequently have been successfully treating them. If you have any concerns or questions please don't hesitate to contact me, Nurse Rach 345 9502 or smithr@rotorualakes.school.nz. GIRLS RUGBY On Monday 6 August our Girls Rugby Team travelled to Paengaroa to play in the final round of the Girls Development Competition. The games were 10 a-side and our first game was against Otumoetai with both teams having won 1 and lost 1 previously to each other. Noelani Ngauora-Herewini won the ball from kickoff and powered her way through the opposition to score under the posts with Jade Waraki converting to make it 7 – 0. More tries were scored by Tatyana Waitoa, Hinerau Mark, Anahera Harrod, Eliza Moke with Jade Waraki finishing with 3 conversions. Final score 31 – 10 to Lakes.
The second game was against Rotorua Girls High. We had a slow start, letting RGHS in for 2 quick tries. With lots of encouragement from Maurice Pomare and supporters on the sidelines, our girls rallied with Noelani Ngauora-Herewini, Zoe Pitman, Hinerau Mark and Morgan Mahaki scoring to take the win. Next Saturday our girls are combining with RGHS to play against the top Girls Development Team, Whakatane at the International Stadium. The game is at 6 pm and is the curtain raiser for the BOP Steamers. _________________________________________________________________________________________
