CHALKBOARD From the Principal – P. 1 - 2 Information – P. 2 - 5 Student Successes – P. 5 - 7 Sport – P. 7 - 8 Careers / Gateway – P. 9 - 11 Notice Board – P.12 Contacts – P. 12

Kia ora Koutou, We had fantastic feedback from our Roadshow visits on 3, 5 and 6 August. A big thank you to Mokoia, Rotorua Intermediate and Whangamarino School for their hospitality and support. It was a great opportunity to meet prospective students and parents. We will be visiting Kaharoa and are looking forward to that. A reminder we have our Open Evening for all Year 8 whanau on 19 August from 5 – 8 pm and our Open Day for students on 23 September (all day). Mihi Whakatau at 5 pm and 6.30 pm with Principals address in auditorium. We hope to see you there. (further details on page 3). It was a great day for our Interhouse event on 2 August. The students were so enthusiastic and totally immersed in all the activities. We introduced some new events throughout the day which included kōrā, Ti Uru, Handball and Kahoot quiz to name but a few. Thank you to all our wonderful students for your great energy and participation and a huge thank you to all our Heads of Houses for the fantastic organization. (full details on pages 5 - 6 ). Our assembly on 3 August was really positive, recognizing all our students who participated at our Interhouse event. We also presented a trophy and certificates to our Epro8 students who made it to the finals in Auckland last month, our MITO startup Ignition Automotive Course students who passed with flying colours and students who received their badges for Deputy House Captains, Rotokakahi. It was a pleasure to recognize all our students who have done so well. (full details on pages 6 - 7). At present, our staff are developing evidence for derived grades should this be necessary. The Prelim Exams for our NCEA students will form a significant part of this evidence, so it is vital that students treat the revision for these assessments with respect. The exams are starting the week of 8 September 2021. (further details on page 2). We are also going to be focusing on students wearing the correct uniform over the next few weeks. We understand that students need to be warm, but hoodies are not part of the school uniform. The uniform rules, set by our board of trustees, are very clear guidelines that every enrolling student agrees to. Wearing our uniform appropriately signifies respect for our school and it’s environment. Long sleeve thermals are fine to wear providing they are under a school jumper or jacket. Thank you for supporting us in this approach.

___________________________________________________________________________ ATTENDANCE EVERY DAY MATTERS!

Regularly attending school really matters, right from the first days at primary school to the end of secondary school. Ensuring that students are at school at 8.45am ready to learn, means that children have every opportunity to learn and participate in school. Attending school is key to setting our young people up for life, as well as being required by law. If your child is under 16 years old, they must go to school every day, unless they are sick. Getting a qualification is one of the main building blocks for success, and regular attendance at school makes all the difference. If a child or young person stops attending school regularly, it becomes harder for them to stay connected to school friends and teachers, and harder to catch up with work they have missed.

___________________________________________________________________________ HOCKEY It was Lakes vs Lakes in the girl's hockey this week. The two teams faced off for the first time this season. It was a fast and fun game with bragging rights at stake. Two goals were scored by 1st XI in the first quarter. Then the game stayed goal-less with strong defence on both sides. Rematch next week as the teams play each other in the semi-final! 2nd XI Player of the day was Sara O'Driscoll. Goals scored by: Bianca Fafeita and Abigail Donald.

___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS FOOTBALL Another superb, win this week, for the Rotorua Lakes Girl’s Football team 5-2, in a home game, against Forest View High School. The whole team played very well in both attack and defence. Our goals were scored by Myume Ueno and Ollie Garrett. Player of the day was Keita Te Moni, our goalie, who literally flew out to the side of the goal to stop the other team scoring. Keita also executed several other amazing saves during the game.

___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS FOOTBALL An awesome win 5 to 4 for Rotorua Lakes High School Girls’ Football against Tauhara 2 team, at home, this week. Excellent effort by all the girls to control the ball in both attack and defence, as directed by our awesome new coach Mr C. Both teams displayed impressive team spirit. Great goal scoring by Emma Pol to seal the match. Miyume Ueno was player of the day. Team of the day

was Rotorua Lakes High.

___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS RUGBY 8

On Friday 30 our girls went to JPC to play their first game of the 2nd Round. As JPC were low in numbers the game was played as a 7aside game. This was challenging for most of our girls but they managed to grind out a win 20-15. Players

of the Day were Manawa Gates and Nevaeh Hira. On Monday 2 our girls played their nemesis Whakatane High who they lost their only game to in the first round by 5 points. Once again it was a close game with both teams scoring lots of tries. Whakatane’s bigger girls managed to get through our defences in the end to win 39-28 with the help of excellent conversions by their kicker. Player of the Day was Maddison Landers for her outstanding defensive tackles and a great try.
