Dear Parents/Caregivers

FROM THE PRINCIPAL SCIENCE BLOCK CLASSROOMS 

On Monday we closed all our laboratories for health and safety reasons after receiving advice from the Ministry of Education that the gauze mats used with our Bunsen burners may be contaminated with a rare form of asbestos. The Ministry’s advice was to get rid of the mats and if they were cracked etc, to handle them with gloves and to wear a mask. Our mats were cracked so we decided to err on the side of caution and close the laboratories while we got the mats tested for asbestos. We received the all clear on Wednesday and the Science Department moved back into their laboratories.

___________________________________________________________________________ WHANAU SUPPORT GROUP and FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL (FOTS) We want to renew our Whanau Support Group and Friends of the School (FOTS) Group. Deputy Principal Pani McLean and HOD Maori Taumata Soloman will lead the Whanau Support Group and Deputy Principal Ross Dunn will lead the Friends of the School Group. Other teaching staff as well as B.O.T members will attend meetings so these groups can become consultative forums where the school can highlight current initiatives and present possible future initiatives for feedback and feed forward from Parents / Whanau. At this point we are thinking we could meet about twice per term. The aim of these groups is not fund raising but to provide a forum where Whanau / Parents and the school can share ideas etc. about the educational needs of our Community and the students at RLHS. If you are interested in joining either of these groups, please contact Pani McLean, mcleanp@rotorualakes.school.nz or Ross Dunn, dunnr@rotorualakes.school.nz Thank you to those people who have previously responded. You will be contacted shortly regarding a meeting time.

TOURISM CLASSES FIELD TRIP The Year 12 and Year 13 Tourism classes visited four local attractions recently as part of their Term 2 field trip.

Students were astounded at the figures given when we were spoken to by Tak Mutu at Mountain Bike Rotorua, about the development of mountain biking and the luxury tourism market.

We then headed out to Waiotapu where one of our own students Johnnie-Rose Huritu took us on a very professional guided tour through the park.

Next was Skyline where we were spoken to by the HR Manager before students could have lunch and go lugeing.

The end of the day was super fun as students tumbled down the hill in 3-person wet OGOs after hearing from Pete Kingi about the development of this company.

It was a fun day where students were able to see tourism in action so we can relate it to our learning in class, and we able to meet potential future employers. _______________________________________________________________________________

GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras. 

Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation.

_________________________________________________________________________ PAST STUDENT IS FUNDRAISING for HEART FOUNDATION  Keegan Mitchell was a Year 13 student at Rotorua Lakes High School last year. He is running the Auckland Marathon in October this year and has chosen the Heart Foundation as his Charity.  Please follow the link below if you wish to make a donation to this very worthwhile charity. Thank you. https://aucklandmarathon2018.everydayhero.com/nz/keegan/wizard/share  We wish Keegan well in this venture! _______________________________________________________________________________

SPORTS BOYS HOCKEY Another game in Taupo but this time the weather was slightly warmer and no fog. We were back to play against Tauhara who two weeks ago had defeated us 6-0. Under Coach Owen's skilled eye the boys were focused on strong tackles and one on one marking. It certainly paid off. Goalie Kody Mayes defended hard with shots coming in at all angles. It was only towards the end of the first half that Tauhara finally scored. But that didn't stop Lakes, who fought back. A beautiful goal by Orrin Lewis saw us equalise. Just before half time Tauhara popped another goal in. The second half saw the ball up and down the field with Tauhara scrabbling more than they expected to. Unfortunately we just couldn't score again. Final score 2-1 Player of the day Kody Mayes ______________________________________________________________________________________

EQUESTRIAN On Sunday the 10th June Tabitha Taylor (Year 9) and Emma Jackson (Year 13) represented Rotorua Lakes High School at the North Island Interschool Show Hunter. _________________________________________________________________________ This programme is run by some Rotary Districts in Australia and all Districts in New Zealand. It is designed for 14 – 16 year old students to experience a true “exchange” with a family in the other country. In 2019 Australian students arrive in New Zealand and attend school with their matched student during Term 2. Both students then return to Australia at the end of June and attend the Australian student’s school during Term 3. In 2019 it is hoped, there will be 60 students from Australia and New Zealand involved in the programme. In the past ten years more than 1600 students have participated in this life-changing experience. One of the aims of Rotary International throughout the world is to bring about a better understanding between people. Student Exchanges are one of the best ways to help achieve this and also develop life-long friendships between individual students, families and the people they meet during the exchange. Students are matched, where possible, with students of similar interest in the other country. You are invited to visit their comprehensive website: www.ranzse.com for:  Expression of Interest Forms – or see PDF below  Application Forms and dates.
