Rotorua Lakes High School “Mauria te pono - Keep steadfastly to the truth”

NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 32 – 15 NOVEMBER 2019

CHALKBOARD From the Principal - P. 1 - 2 News – P. 2 - 7 Careers – P. 7 - 9 Notice Board – P.10 Contact Us – P. 10 Our Sponsors – P. 11

Kia ora Koutou, This week students have been under the pump dealing with exams across the board. NCEA exams are in full flight and on Thursday and Friday of this week we have been conducting our Year 9 and 10 exams. While exams are never ”fun” the junior exams give our students a tangible perception of what they are heading towards in Year 11. Tt also provides staff and whanau with clear feedback about their learning and areas that need more attention. We often wish students luck going into exams, but in all honesty it doesn’t come down to luck, it comes down to effort, hard work and focus. I look forward to congratulating our students on the hard work they have put it. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate some of our student leavers many of whom have received scholarships. The following list is by no means complete, but I will mention one or two of our outstanding scholarships: Tegan Fookes, University of Central Florida – Fully paid Division 1 Rowing Scholarship; Stella Pinckney, University of Otago Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarship - $35,000; Daniel Burrows, University of Otago 150th Entrance Scholarship - $18,000; Ani Chater, University of Otago Performance Entrance Scholarship - $16,000, Te Aorere White, The University of Waikato's Te Ara Whanui Scholarship - $10,000 I look forward to following our school leavers as they progress through the next stages of their lives and hopefully we will retain contact with many. Hopefully we have not tired out our junior students too much and I hope they have enough energy to cope with an enjoyable weekend. Nga mihi

Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki 1

________________________________________________________________________ FROM THE CIVIL DEFENCE Kia ora koutou, On the night of Sunday 24 November, Civil Defence will be testing Emergency Mobile Alerts for New Zealand residents. To raise awareness and ensure families are prepared to receive the text alert we would appreciate it if you could please share the attached graphic via your available channels (school newsletters or emails). Emergency Mobile Alerts are messages about emergencies sent by authorised emergency agencies to mobile phones. The alerts are designed to keep people safe and are broadcast to all capable phones from targeted cell towers. The alerts can be targeted to areas affected by serious hazards and will only be sent when there is a serious threat to life, health or property, and in this case, for testing purposes. Next Sunday, if your phone is capable, you will receive a message informing you of the test. You can find out if your mobile is capable of receiving the message by checking the list of cellphone models on the Civil Defence website under ‘Emergency Mobile Alert’. For more information about Emergency Mobile Alerts visit https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/get-ready/civil-defence-emergency-management-alerts-andwarnings/emergency-mobile-alert/ Thank you for your support, Ngā mihi Linda Johnston Civil Defence Co-ordinator, Rotorua Lakes Council.

For those of you that are new, Christmas shoebox hopes to deliver a smile to our local kids by giving them a shoebox present to open on Christmas Day. To do this we need your support to offer as many boxes as we can to low decile schools, pre-schools, community organisations. 9S3 and Mrs Hodge are going to facilitate boxes being created from donations from RLHS students and staff. If you would like to contribute any items we will box them up and pass them on to the organisers who will deliver to needy children early December. Boxes need to be packed and handed in by the end of November so last day for getting items in to Mrs Hodge is Wednesday 27th November. 9S3 will pack them and wrap them on Thursday 28th November. Parents and family are invited to attend. The evening will begin with drinks and a buffet meal, followed by a celebration of the achievements of all Year 13 students. This is a semi-formal occasion. A very tidy standard of dress is required (e.g. no jeans, t-shirts, jandals etc) and appropriate behavior is expected – no whistling, calling out etc. Students attending are under our normal school rules including no smoking and no alcohol.
