Kia ora Koutou, This term has seen students from across our school participate in an extraordinary number of curricular and extracurricular activities, through which they have demonstrated outstanding levels of engagement, creativity and resilience. We thoroughly enjoyed our Year 13 & Year 10 camps, Summer Tournament Week and our Swimming Sports; almost as much as the students did! All of which were so successful because of our wonderful students and fantastic staff. Thank you for a great term. I wish to acknowledge 3 staff that are leaving us at the end of this term. Chris Yukich has been a stalwart within the Maths Department as Assistant Head of Department. She is retiring and we wish her all the best as she launches into the next chapter of her life. Tod Sharland is leaving our science department to return to his home region of Taranaki. While sad to see him go, we know it is the best for his whānau and wish him an enjoyable time in the next phase of his career. Our school nurse, Rachelle Smith is also departing to move to another role. Her support of our students as part of our Health and Wellbeing Team has been massive over the past four years and she leaves big shoes to fill. Changes in staffing is always a delicate process to manage and we, as a school, will do all we can to minimize any disruption to our students’ learning. I look forward to introducing those staff taking on roles in the school, which I will do in Term 2. I know students and staff will be welcoming a break at last. It feels like it has been one very long term from late January to now. I hope you are able to spend some time with your young person over the break and we look forward to welcoming them back for the start of term 2 on Monday 3 May 2021. Have a wonderful holiday. Ngā mihi

During the start of the camp, everyone stayed in their own little groups with the people from their school. Immediately, that changed. Everyone was split up and tossed together with other people we knew nothing about. We were involved in challenges such as knot tying, bivouac building, kayaking, waka ama, campfire making, role-playing (while going on a hike), a chant, a skit. But most challenging, meeting other people. However, we bonded quickly. I’m talking about everyone here, everyone, all the students learnt something about the stranger sitting next to them. Personally, I loved my time at RYPEN. The staff were very encouraging and kind, and the students were very friendly and easy to talk to. If you have the opportunity to take up RYPEN, take it. Trust me. All fees and expenses are paid for by the local Rotary clubs around Rotorua, so there’s no cost involved. I speak on behalf of all who went to RYPEN, when I say: We had an awesome time!! Thank you to Mrs Hodge and the Rotary Club of Rotorua Passport for sponsoring the students from RLHS.

FROM OURSPORT DEPARTMENTS ___________________________________________________________________________ BAY HOCKEY MEETING Great turnout with nearly 100 from our hockey community. The presentation looked at the plan from Bay Hockey to build the number and capacity of umpires in our sport. This included discussion around ensuring the environment was such that people want to umpire. To this end the presentation also included upskilling the players and parents present on some of the important rules in the game, and the interpretation and application of them in the game.
